I noticed over the last week that there was a pretty loud whine associated with turning the steering wheel. I checked the fluid level and it didn't seem low. I added a touch just to make sure. Took it into the dealership today and they called back and told me there's a bunch of fluid on the bottom splash pan. They haven't said what the culprit is yet. 46k miles on the car.
View 6 RepliesSometimes I wonder why I have this car serviced....I have a 2000 Passat V6, just had the timing belt, water pump and infamous ABS control module replaced. Also had problems with the secondary air system (I think that's what it's called??) - another mechanic identified a couple of blocked areas and repaired. So now, all of the flashing lights are gone, but there is a very high pitched whine that is pronounced when I'm turning and sounds like it's coming thru the steering column? Goes away after about 20 minutes driving - should I take the car back??

View 7 RepliesI own a 2007 GX470. It has suddenly developed a loud whine. We replaced the power steering fluid (which we were told was filthy) but the whine is still there. The mechanic has suggested we drive it for about 500 miles to see if the noise disappears. I'm not crazy about driving it with the loud noise but don't mind. He says the car is safe to drive.
View 4 Repliesi have an 04 f-150 with a 5.4 motor. about 2000 miles ago the power steering pump started to whine really loud. I sucked out the power steering fluid and started it up and the fluid that back into the tank looked like it was gritty and rusty. I replaced it out a few times and no change. I then did the job of replacing the power steering pump which was about a 5 hour job.
It was quiet for about 5 miles and the new one started whining. Every week I have been sucking out the old fluid and replacing it and it still seems to be gritty. What could I do to quiet it down? the steering works perfect btw. I am looking at selling this truck and buying an 09 or newer ford and want to quiet it down before selling it. The truck has 88,000 miles on it and i am the original owner.
I have a 2004 Santa Fe 3.5L with 85K miles. TB, WP and all belts changed at 75K. Have had this whine noise when I turn right, very high pitch noise. On top of this there is now Power Steering fluid leaking from the reservoir and base and brackets are full of fluid... Needless to say I assume it is the reservoir seals giving up but why the noise only when I turn right? No noise when I turn left.
What could it be? Also where can I find parts online that are cheaper than the stealership? I called them and they quoted me $72.00 for this piece of plastic!!
What else should I change? There is also some "oil/fluid" coming down a pressure hose but I believe this is due to the oil dripping from the reservoir...
Any manuals I could use to view this? I bought the Haynes manual and it's worthless!
2001 F350 XL... Fitting on PS pump broke and I lost PS and PB with fluid everywhere. Replaced the hose with a new one from Autozone and I have no noticeable leaks.
I know I lost more than a quart but I could only add less than a quart (Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF). I'm also getting a whine from the steering wheel when I turn stop to stop. The power steering is back and there are no leaks (that I see) but the brake pedal is mushy. I've pumped and turned stop to stop for a while. Do I have to bleed the system like I'm doing a fluid flush? I hate to waste the synthetic fluid that I changed about two years ago.
I am a recent new owner of an 06 f350 Powerstroke. Steering Box developed a leak so I decided to replace the box and go ahead and do the pump and hoses while at it. Pump would make some noise so i figured I'd just do it all and be done with it or so I thought. The job was a pain, much harder than the pump and boxes i've done on the older 7.3 powerstroke.
Anyways, used all OEM components (pump was a rebuilt rotorcraft, can't buy new anymore) and everything seemed great for about a day. I tried to bleed the air out per standard practice of turning the wheels with the truck off the ground. At startup and during the first day it had almost no noise at all and the steering felt much easier than the old pump.
Then the pump started to develop the standard annoying ford power steering whine that I hear all the time. Drove it over the weekend on a 160 mile trip and the noise just kept getting worse. As of tonight I can't turn the wheel if the truck is stopped even with my foot off the brakes.
I used synthetic ATF for fluid and there is absolutely no foam or aeration in the reservoir. Good news is I don't have any leaks but the bad is I now don't have power steering. It does make a much louder whine or squeak when I hit a large bump turning, I guess that's just the sound of the pump being stressed more. I am guessing the pump just crapped out but before I do it all over again.
I was driving home the other day when i heard a groaning when turning. i stopped to check the power steering fluid at O'PepZone and it was really low. i bought some fluid poured it in while the car was running. it foamed a bit from all the air but then the PSF started emptying out of the reservoir underneath the car.
By the time i got home it was groaning and basically empty of PSF again. when i crawled under the car, i saw a lot of fluid on the passenger (right ) side of the car by the subframe and a little bit by the driver (left) side of the car. the leaks seem to be from the ends of the rack and pinion. no detectable leaks by the hose/hard line connections.
Other than the leak(s), the steering has felt very good. no play to speak of and no weird sounds either.
This makes me wonder if i somehow damaged the seals when i installed my PSS9 coilovers....
Last week, on our mercury monterey, we found that the level of power steering fluid had dropped and steering was making squeaking noise while turning. Filled up the fluid and it worked. Today when checked again, i am seeing drop in level again. So certainly there is some leak. Can we find it at home? Also is it safe to fill the fluid and drive or should we get it fixed asap?

View 5 RepliesSo recently, my car started making whining noises upon turning the steering wheel during cold starts. Now, it does it when the car is warmed up too. From what I can hear, its only during slow speeds. Can't take my car to the dealership anymore cause they will charge me $140 diagnostic fee for whatever issues I'm having due to my car being "tampered" with previously. (It's all stock now).
View 4 RepliesHave a moderate pitch whine in front end only when steering or turning to right. Gets louder w higher speeds but pitch is about the same. Thought it was a left front wheeling bearing. Also needed new pads and rotor. While doing the job noticed grease all over the lower ball jt. Discovered a tear in the outer axle boot. Net net replaced pads, rotor, axle hub assembly and axle complete. To my chagrin the noise has changed one bit. The noise also doesn't change when I put the car in neutral while traveling downhill. With the hope that I replaced the wrong bearing I have ordered a new one for the right passenger side. When I tried the 6-12 wheel rocking test on the right there did not appear to be any looseness.
View 5 RepliesAfter seeing my new car my mom decided she wanted a new one too lol (i got a 2012 gti) so she traded her 2008 camry in for a new 2012 tiguan. I went to my parents house when they got it to see how the tsi is in the tig compared to my gti.
Her car has a whine from the steering wheel. She took it into vw (has had it now about 5 days) and they said it's normal and will go away. I don't believe the dealership in saying it will go away. I feel like it's something simple too like a squeaky bearing or something and just needs some lube. Also in low speeds/low rpm (it's an automatic) it sounds kinda loud (like putting manual in to high of a gear that low rumble type noise).
Here's my problem, I have a B5.5 1.8 5speed and my power steering makes a whining noise when Im turning. I checked the fluid and it's full. A few years ago on a roadtrip from CA to NM, my PS cooler hard pipe had a leak and drained all the fluid. It's was 11pm and still had 30 miles to get home and all I could get was Pennzoil PS fluid from Walgreens. So for the past 3 years I've been using Pennzoil PS fluid. Just recently it started making this noise. Luckily I picked up a 98 AEB parts car for $300 and my question is,
Would a power steering pump from my B5 fit my B5.5??? And, If the problem isn't my pump, would the PS rack fit also??
I know I have a leak in my power steering fluid return. I bought the big expensive green jug and top it off when I need to. The past few days, when I start up my car and turn around in the driveway, there's a groan when I turn the wheel in either direction.
View 3 RepliesI am a clueless 2003 Volkswagen Passat 1.8L Turbo owner. My power steering line has a visible leak that I can see underneath the front bumper. The leak is now more like a hole and was caused by the line dragging after the car was in the shop. I guess someone bumped it or it got knocked loose, but at this point, I need to just get the line fixed. The leak is on a U shaped part of the line, and I can take a picture of it.
I also understand that the power steering fluid is not the standard type...where do they sell the kind I need?
I recently had a 4-wheel alignment performed on my 2003 VW Passat. A couple days after the procedure I noticed my steering wheel was stiff and a whirring noise when I turned the wheel. Come to find out my power steering fluid is now leaking. Is this just a coincidence, or could the garage have broken something. It was not leaking or making any noises prior to the alignment.
View 2 RepliesI picked up a '99 Passat 2.8 GLX tonight and the steering is making a loud squeal and groan when I turn the steering wheel. I checked the fluid and it's brown. I've owned a lot of VW's and Audi's and I've never seen brown fluid in one. I checked for a leak but there's so much oil everywhere from where the previous owner just had the cam seals, timing belt, water pump, and a bunch of other stuff changed. The level looks good, but it's just nasty and loud.
View 3 RepliesReplace the seals in a power steering rack on a Passat? I recently noticed I had a fluid leak after seeing spots on my driveway. After discovering it was power steering fluid when I checked the reservoir, I checked all the lines and found the leak coming from the rack on the drivers side. The boot on the steering rack had come loose and there was fluid leaking from the side of the rack. Is there a fix for this or am I looking at a expensive repair?
