Own a 2006 Volkswagen Passat 2.0t a/t. My dash board is showing a parking brake fault but as soon as the that comes up my tranny will go into limp mode ???? could the parking brake and tranny be linked together??? My parking brake still engaged and disengaged ??? what can it be ???
View 8 RepliesToday the roads were slushy. On my drive to work a strange parking brake fault happened twice. Each time I was driving at highway speeds, not engaging the parking brake. In each case, the parking brake fault light came on, and the car seemed to go into some kind of "limp home" mode: the car would not accelerate or upshift, although it appeared to be willing to maintain around 40mph or very mildly accelerate from 0-20 mph if I stopped all the way. This was not because the parking brake engaged itself and was slowing the car - the car still coasted freely. It was clearly because the computer was limiting the car's power/speed severely. In the first case, I think it came on when I was beginning to apply the regular brakes to slow down gradually for a light; and in the second I was not using the brakes at all but did hit a puddle of slush. In both cases, it's possible the traction control kicked in, although I did not see that indicator light flash. The ABS did not get used based on sound and pedal feel in the first place, and because I wasn't engaging the brakes at all in the second case.
In each case, I was able to pull off the road, shut off the engine/car entirely, and then restart the car to clear the fault and turn off the light. The car drove totally normally from there, as if nothing had ever been wrong. There was around two hours including 90 minutes of being parked in my garage between the two events. I've never had any parking brake malfunction of any kind before with this car. So now I'm wondering when this will happen again. This does not appear to be the common problem of the parking brake button, since it never involved actually applying or releasing the parking brake and never involved me touching the button. I don't like having to quickly go from the left lane of a freeway all the way to the right lane or shoulder when my car suddenly decides to slow down for no obvious reason.
I bought a new battery tonight at my local VW dealership and after replacing it in the parking lot I got into my car, started it up, and saw 'Parking Brake Fault - See Owners Manual'. Seeing as I dont have an owners manual as when I bought it used, it didn't come with one - The car is still driveable but does not shift out of gear and when I go to engage (automatic) Drive, Reverse, or Sport, from the Parked position it makes a hard clunk and small jerk before it engages. The MFD is as if I am still parked because I can access all the comfort sections, and all transmission selections are highlighted. Im not sure if it was in Neutral or Park when I engaged the Parking Brake before I changed the battery so maybe and Im hoping when I took the old battery out, and put the new one in, that something wasnt set correctly when the car started up after having no battery power???
I am curious to know what possible ways I can rectify this. Its sitting in the VW dealership parking lot and Im hoping they will be able to take a look at at it in the morning but of course I wanted to check here. Also, what does it say in the Owners Manual about a Parking Brake Fault?
I went skiiing this past weekend in Angel Fire, NM. When it was time to leave on Sunday I started the car and proceeded to undo the parking brake (I was parked on a n incline). As I press the button I get a message saying something like "Electronic Parking Brake Fault. Please Service". Then I press it again and it works. Is this something I can expect more of, or could it be due to the cold weather? It was 13F outside then at the time, and the car is a 2006 with 52K on it.
View 14 RepliesHappened to me twice today, engine wouldn't start, message on MFD was "Parking Brake Fault" and the engine would not start. I read through he owners manual looking for a solution, and the engine finally restarted and I was off on my merry way.
About two hours later, on another errand, this time I started down the road, the engine died, I tried a re-start, got the same "Parking Brake Fault" message and this time the engine would not start. Tow truck is going after the car right now. This leaves me a bit frustrated why a parking brake issue would kill the engine.
2008 Passat Komfort...
Its been consistently below freezing around here and when the car is cold, I get a parking brake fault as soon as I turn on the ignition. When I press the button it will usually release the brake, however further presses result is flaky operation, inconsistently flipping between working properly and showing a fault. However, if I can clear the fault, Auto-Hold works fine, and once the car is warmed up, the parking brake works flawlessly.
View 11 RepliesI was driving home. Problems started after pulling away from a 4-way stop. Truck started lunging almost like I was running out of fuel. Then I got a "Transmission Malfunction" in the in dash display. Followed by limp mode. I checked the Faults when I got home. I have the following:
P0720 - Powertrain - Output speed sensor Circuit
P2106 - Powertrain - Throttle Actuator Control System - Forced Limited Power (From what I understand this is associated with limp mode. Not a root of the problem)
P0713 - Powertrain - Transmission Fluid Temp Sensor Circuit High Input
P0722 - Powertrain - Output Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal
The vehicle has around 192,000 mi. Replaced cam phasers in upper engine roughly 1000 miles ago and replaced all the bearings in the rear differential roughly 100 mi ago. I haven't messed with anything on the transmission. Checked fluid level and color of transmission fluid.
I have a 07 Passat, manual 2.0T, 90 kmiles.
There was a recall for some faulty circuit in the steering column, which got replaced in September. Ever since the replacement, about once a week (with a daily commute of 40 miles each way, mostly congested highway), the following happens:
First the engine revs up for a couple of seconds when I change gears, to 4-5kRPM. Then within 5 minutes, I get a "Parking Brake Fault" message, together with the yellow P light staying on. If I stop the engine, I cannot restart it for 30 minutes or so, there's a message that says "depress clutch first".
When I finally manage to restart, I won't have a problem for about a week. Is this common?
Hit a puddle-now car is stuck in 3rd gear... with parking brake fault light lit up. How to fix it? it happened on the highway on the way to work at 70mph . so now i either have to drive home with it the rpms at 4k or get it towed. Car is a 2006 passat with 35000 miles.
View 5 RepliesI have a 03 GLI 24V VR6 6 speed and im having an issue with the brake light.. ive checked all the fuses and emergency brake sensor and they are all good, the issue is the brake light flashes 3 times then will stay on almost immediately and whenever it does the entire drive of the car changes.. without the light on the car runs fine but when it comes on its like the car goes to a limp mode and is leaning out on fuel.. it wont rev past 4k it falls on its face and basically jerks along until I get where I am going.. I've replaced ABS speed sensors, MAF, and front brakes and axles recently.. before this was an random issue that would come and go but now its almost every time and it makes it undriveable..
View 1 Repliesso i was driving the vw and the car starts surging like its in limp mode but no cel! so i stopped and checked my engine bay to see if maybe my intercooler piping came loose but nothing! so i shut it off for about 5 seconds and turned it back on and it threw a cel! the whole time i was driving it home felt like it was going in and out of limp mode and would not boost past 4 psi! check the cel and came back as this:

Passat 2008/09 TSI engine 16k miles. APR stage 2+
I was driving normally and suddenly EPC light comes on, and the engine goes to limp mode. I turn the engine off and then turn on again. Everything runs fine. Vag shows N276 intermittent fail. I had already this fail, but always when starting engine, and the engine used to run OK. Is this a "sign" that is time to replace the HPFP? Or can I take the chance and keep running?
I have the problem of over boosting and hitting limp mode. now does that mean i adjusted the actuator wrong when putting it back on? if so how do i adjust it properly. or is there something else i can do to make the car come out of limp mode? also since it is boosting past a certain psi should i put a mbc on it and adjust it down?
View 1 RepliesWife's Passat went into "limp mode" and will only give me 4th gear. Check engine light came on when it happened. I had a buddy scan the car with OBD scanner and it is saying Sensor A is bad? Which sensor this is, or thought of writing down the code that it was throwing. My guess is the speed sensor for the transmission.
Luckily the car is a W8 and has enough power to pull the car from stop in 4th gear. There aren't any reputable VW dealerships in my town or any neighboring town. I've decided to take the car to a VW/Audi specialist some 60 miles away. They told me they can take a look and replace if needed. I absolutely do not trust VW dealerships/service around here. I've heard nothing but nightmare stories about them.
My friends has an 06 3.6 motion sedan and has a problem. His car went into limp mode with the ECM and traction control light as well as CEL. we took it to the local dealer (45 min away) they scanned it and said that the throttle pedal was the only code that wouldn't clear. He ordered a new pedal from ECS and installed it today. The cars still in limp mode we read about a potential throttle body adjustment procedure (not too sure of the validity) any how followed it open hood open door ignition in the "on" position for a few minutes. After that when he started it every warning light came on. Is there a step in pedal replacement we re missing? On a side note the connector on the pedal end was fairly damaged not sure what from maybe the po had a botched replacement attempt? Not too sure what to try next.
View 5 RepliesI have a 2004 1.8T AWM auto tranny Passat with APR chip. CIA, Bolt down Coil Packs, Bosch F6DTC plugs, OEM cat to straight pipe to magnaflow muffler, N75J, Forge DV (not the 007).
I installed a MBC bypassing the N75 to keep the spike at 16psi and hold (the n75J i spike at 22psi and hold 12~14), When I did that, the car will go in limp mode from 'over boosting'. I have to turn the MBC down to 9 to keep the car limping out. I love the way the MBC have the boost curve (the N75 is too passive for me). would like to fix this issue.
Also, with the N75 and or MBC, while in the APR 93 oct chip mode, I always get surging in 4th and 5th gear. Any time the boost is over 10psi, it is like I have tons of boost, but the engine is not using it. APR said it is the tranny, the tranny shop said it is the engine or computer, the engine shop said it is the tuning.
I got into my car about 5 minutes ago and while driving i noticed a ample amount of power loss. I would go half throttle and my rmp's would go up by my speed seemed lacking even full on it it seemed to be lagging and was a slow climb to 60. Could it be my turbo not putting out or something more serious. Its a 99 1.8t ....
View 10 RepliesWe have a 2006 Passat, 30K miles, live in northeast on a Great Lake. We bought it used in 5/07 with 11K miles on it. The other day, a whole mess of warning lights came on, and the car went into "limp mode." The dealership diagnosed corroded wires where they connect to the throttle valve controller. We usually keep our cars for years, and we've never had corroded wires before. Is this a typical problem of VW's? The service mgr said he'd seen about 6 come in in the last year, but I don't know if that's a lot or a few compared to other brands. We're getting ready to shop for cars again, and we'd consider a new Jetta, but not if it can't go out in the rain. Also, if the wires corroded once, what will keep them from corroding again? Should we expect this to keep happening?
View 2 RepliesLong story, but I bought a 2007 Prius with 73K miles on it. Now I'm at 93K miles, and I think it may be more jerky than when I got it when I shift the tranny into "brake" mode.
I don't know if the fluid has ever been changed on it, and I intend to change it very soon now. Am I in a pickle? Or should this transmission be fine if the fluid hasn't been changed for 93K miles?
I unhooked the battery for about an hour. I hooked it back up. I started the car put the selector into drive. CLUNK. Disengaged the parking brake. Drove. It turns out when I shifted to D it went straight to third and stayed there. I turned off the car, restarted it. Still stuck in third. Drove a few miles. Restarted it. No more issues. My guess the tranny went into safe mode, but why?

I have never changed any wiring on the car, nor installed aftermarket electronics. I have the car for about a year now. At the time when the light came on, the weather outside was very cold.
