Passat (B6) :: Small White Puff Of Smoke When Accelerating From A Stop
Aug 11, 2007
B6 Exhaust smoke issues. I'll be taking the car into the dealer for a look.
Car has 2,500 miles, and I can't see any smoke while driving. Only someone following me sees it. It's only a small white puff of smoke when I'm accelerating from a stop. I'm told it doesn't last long, and is just a small puff, not a cloud.

I have a 12 F150 with the 5.0L. it has 27000 miles on the clock. Noticed twice a small puff of white smoke coming out of the exhaust and decided to check the oil level and it was a quart low. The last oil change was done at 23000 miles and used Full Synthetic Pennzoil and a K&N filter. Called the local dealership I purchased at and they told me NOT to use full synthetic and should only be using Motorcraft semi synthetic with a Motorcraft filter. I know the dealerships will only endorse and advice Motorcraft products but what does everyone else use and think. In the meantime I added a quart of oil and all is fine.

I have a 4 cylinder 2000 Camry that I recently took to the shop because my check engine light was on and it was blowing out a puff of white smoke when the car first starts. I was told it was an EGR problem and this is what I had fixed:
"Upon client approval, remove and replace defective EGR Bypass Vacuum Valve with new (OE) EGR Bypass Vacuum Valve. Test drive vehicle following service to confirm proper operation. Warranty on parts and labor is 2 years or 20,000 miles (whichever comes first). Warranty valid at FIXCARNOW locations only. "
The problem is my car is still blowing out smoke, the check engine light is off, but it is having the same problems it did before. My concern is that either they didn't properly diagnose the problem, even though they ran a full diagnostic on the car, or just didn't fix it.

I have a 2005 Camry that is not leaking coolant (checking water level every morning) it has a puff of white smoke the first start of the day. I initially suspected condensation, as it only produces white smoke when temperature goes down to 65 degrees or cooler during the night.
However the longer it sits without starting, greater the amount of smoke. If I do not start the car at all on Saturday and on Sunday afternoon I start it, there is a lot more white smoke than I get every morning during weekdays. If it was condensation, by Sunday afternoon when temp isn't as cool, shouldn't all the water collecting evaporated?
Assuming it is condensation, what part failing would cause this? This car did not have this white smoke issue when it was new.
Not sure if it is related but the engine stutters on the first start of the day. Stutter also gets worse the colder the temp and the longer it's been sitting without starting. During summer when it's 85+, it does not stutter in the morning.

Dad has a 2010 F150 CC SB. it has the 5.4 in it. Ever since day one it has had a noticeable tick in the valve train. But it can only be heard inside the truck when there is no other noise... Open the hood and its not there. Ford dealer told dad that it was normal, and that the firewalls are just not thick enough where it gets really close to the engine and that the sound is transferred to the firewall.
NEXT question... Not always, but sometimes when the truck is started cold, it will puff white smoke.... Every time dad has had it at the dealer they say they cannot ever see it. Curious if any of your trucks have this issue, before I take it back there with again, asking to go start every truck on the parking lot listening for the tick and the smoke...

My 1994 4x4 4Runner throws out a white puff of smoke at the tail pipe everytime I start it and sometimes when I'm driving. Just recently, it has no acceleration power what so ever and it can hardly go up a hill.
Is my engine total? Also, I'm leaking alot of steering fluid but, no puddles anywhere.
Is there a connection between the two or is it just time to buy a new car?

My beloved excursion is 300 miles away from me in a no start condition. Vehicle has 270K miles. Very well cared for. No issues to date since purchase 5 years ago. Went to back up and the vehicle starting Caming like it had a big cam in it. went from reverse to drive and problem went away. Drove vehicle for 2 more weeks without issue. Then all of a sudden it dies. Restart driver on down the road 1/4 mile, dies again. Restart, make 45 mile drive home vehicle is low on power will hardly pull a grade but I got to my friends house. Went to start vehicle next day and no start. Puff white smoke while trying to start. It hits every once in awhile but wont run.
The vehicle is throwing NO CODES other than an open glow plug on 1&8 which it has for sometime now. I have changed, fuel filter, fuel pump, CPS(genuine ford), IPR and IPS. No real changes still wont start. I disconnected the IPS and it started but it sounded like it was only running on a couple of cylinders. It would not accept throttle. The local Forddealer does not have a Ford diesel tech. Ive called a couple of diesel shops and I hear could be a bad HPOP, or bad ECM or a bad IDM but without seeing it. I am at my wits end with this thing. I am an electronic engineer by background. So I have a good sense of the process. I have checked all fuses, relays, etc. I will say I did have one issue with it a year ago where the UVC problem popped up but the dealer fixed it and it has been fine ever since.

I've been chasing a problem all summer. Began with crappy batteries dying intermittently. I replaced the batteries, FICM, finally cleaned EGR valve and replaced ICP with pigtail. The problem is still persistent. Basically a rough idle, puff of whit smoke on cold startup, rough running at around 1500 rpms( driving at 50 mph). The ICP was soaked in oil so i was confident replacing it would finally cure my issues. It actually got worse with the rough idle turning to a surging idle and quite rumbly at 50 mph speed. I guess its time to look to injector issues but i thought id check if after replacing icp/ cleaning egr. I also have a slight exhaust leak at turbo out that i can see. The clamp is not seated properly. This after turbo connection to exhaust.

Well its a 1.8t pretty much stock except the previous owner added a turbo-back exhaust and has an apr tune running the 91/93 octane tune and they also deleted the stock airbox.
After the car warms up sometimes I'll get a pretty big puff of smoke on acceleration from a stop. sort of bluish in color and it happens randomly, not every time. I usually have to add oil about every week. I have taken it to a mechanic but told me it wasnt the turbo ( cause thats what i thought at first) and that it might be valve seals instead. I scanned for codes since CEL went on and i got a p0136 o2 sensor code and p0411.

Well, tonight while driving, I started to smell something burning. I just thought it was something outside. All of a sudden I see a little puff of smoke rise up off to my left side. A hot spot had developed and burned through the leather.

I was watching my wife drive off yesterday, and noticed a puff of blue smoke (oil) from the exhaust when she started moving.
This is a 2000 V6 passat. The car has a valve clatter when you first put a load on the engine that goes away quickly. I've read that this is likely the cam tensioners leaking down - is that right.

So the wife was following me home yesterday and I got on it at a stop light. She said that I had a puff of black smoke come out when I shifted gears. The car is a 2006 2.0 m/t w/ about 60,000 miles. Never had the oil light comes on but dipstick is always dryer than it should be although dealer always says I'm fine. Today my brother-in-law was following me and I told him to watch. He said he never saw a puff when I was shifting but that once at idle he saw a slight black smoke. Car is cpo for another year or about 13,000 miles so it's not an immediate issue but if it's a problem I want it fixed before warranty expires. Is this just normal?

So This all started when I noticed my 03 Ex 6.0 started to not upshift every once and awhile. It has 300,000 miles on it.As far as I know it has never had tranny filter changed. So I said it shall be done.I did both internal and external filters and the fluid was very dark but not burnt. The pan was very clean and no sludge or metal on magnet.Put in new fluid and ran the truck until warm and checked fluid level and all was good. Now this where things get weird.Went for a drive and truck would not up from first easily or I had to feather pedal to upshift. If I put my foot into it I got a lot of black smoke after about 5 seconds and some sort of shuttering in the engine on deceleration. Ran AE for codes and nothing came up. The engine has EGR Delete. Blue spring, new injectors, glow plugs......

My Elantra is at 14k miles and it has happened twice now that the pipe has released white/grayish smoke when accelerating abruptly (pretty much forcing the engine) on the highway above 60mph. I can see in my mirror that it leaves a pretty big smoke screen behind me.
I took it for an inspection after the first time it happened and the mechanic said it might have just been steam and that I should not worry about it. Since my 15k maintenance check is coming up, I will ask that they actually check on it.
I'm also curious to know if this could cause me to get a ticket? I'm thinking I could get pulled over for "imparing the vision of drivers behind me and making it dangerous for them", or something like that.

Title says it all... Starts & idles pretty good. No codes. Has decent power on mild acceleration, any time you step on it more than 1500rpm it lets out little black puffs of smoke and intake makes that popping sound and truck jerks a little...EGR delete. HPO pressure is good. Injectors are fresh as of a year ago. Valves? Lifters? Turbo?

I have a santa fe from the year 2008 and recently i had a trip where i would get tons of white smoke every time the car was at idle at the stop light. upon inspection, i saw that the coolant level was below the low line so i had it topped up and the problem disappeared. Everything was fine until today when the problem occurred so i checked the coolant level on the side of the road but the coolant level was fine and still is upon inspection when the car was cooled off. After i stopped to check the coolant level and restarting the car, the smoke was gone and did not appear again. I checked the internet for solutions and some suggest blown head gasket but many of the symptoms do not make sense in my case since the engine never overheats and the coolant level hasn't gone down in the past week.

Turbo def needed rebuilt, unison ring was worn out. Ton of carbon build up also. Was leaking oil too. Rebuilt it, good to go now.
Egr cooler wasn't leaking and was plugged on the one end. Got the IPR kit installed, nice kit. Re sealed the oil cooler at the same time. CCV re route done.
Here is the kicker. It still SMOKES!!! Only when leaving a stop light. There was quite a bit of oil in the turbo piping. I cleaned that all out. Could it still be oil in the intercooler and it just needs times to get blown out? Or??? I did a power balance test, cylinder contribution test, injector kill test, and etc all passed.
Maybe hook the boat up pull a 6% grade and get all that blown out?

What is probably causing this white smoke on my 2012 camry se v6 with 105190km? Randomly, the camry would emit a screen of white smoke after stopping at a stop light with just normal acceleration (this is a LOT of smoke, something to be embarrassed about for a 2012).

I have a 2006 f350 with 75k on it, has a mild sct towing tune, and 4' turbo abck dual exhaust. It recently started blowing whiteish smoke, so i did an EGR cooler and valve delete kit, and it stoppe dsmoking for a while.. coinsidence?
It has recently started again, at idle there is no smoke, and taking off slow from a stop, it doesnt ALWAYS smoke. but leaving a dead stop, if i get right into it, it billows whiteish smoke, and if im cruising, romp on it, let off it, then get on it again it will smoke.
Ive been told fuel pressure, injectors, turbo seal etc. when i had the down pipe off, no sticky black residue was present, so im counting out turbo seal (for now). I purchased the blue spring upgrade for fuel pressure, because i was told its not getting the right amount of fuel, once i get that ill throw it in and see if it fixes it.
whats yall's opinion? is it worth have it checked for a failed injector? as i said, no EGR in the truck, no loss of coolant either, oil is clean. It does seem a little sluggish at times off the line now as well.

Every time I turn my car off, I can hear a small puff of air releasing from around the engine (front grill area) if I am in front of the car (not loud but you can hear it when you are in front of the car). I have a 2013 limited USA version.
Also, how do I remove the negative battery terminal? I would like to do some lighting work and I want to stay safe doing it.
