We have an '07 wagon that recently started exhibiting the following: When doing a sharp turn left or right you can hear a rotational shhhhusshhhing sound... shussshhh *pause* shusshhh *pause*.. etc. Its obviously linked to the front wheels since going straight does not produce the sound. Brakes and rotors have 13k on them; dealer has checked out the car and says everything looks good and the bearings are fine.
Could this be CV joints or something similar? Where to look? This is not a thud thud thud (which I have heard before when another car of ours needed new cv joints). Safety is main concern, don't want bearings freezing while driving..
I took my car to the dealer two days ago. The idle was rough, it stall twice and I had a CEL.. They change two high pressure fuel sensor and now the car run fine.
But now I hear a disturbing whistle sound when accelerating. The sound is audible from inside the car but louder when the window are down. This is my third turbo car and this sound as no comparison to the sweet whistle of my 1.8T for example.
I opened the hood to check if something was loose, in fact the main clamp from the inlet pipe to the engine cover was loose so I remove the engine cover assembly to check if the tech didn't forgot something else. Everything looked fine, I put everything back together and I hearing this annoying whistle again...
I have a 2001 1.8t tip wagon(75k) that that is starting to worry me. It makes a tapping sound (coming from back of valve cover) AFTER it is warmed up at idle. When the RPMs go over 1,000, the sound goes away. Is this the cam chain adjuster or tensioner??? Also, when the engine first starts up it makes a similar noise , only louder, for the first couple of seconds.
View 5 RepliesTook my 2010 Corolla in to have it looked at since it has recently developed a clicking/thumping sound when I make a sharp right turn (it's intermittent, but frequent enough to be noticed).
The shop I took it to said the source of the noise was the CV axle, but that after inspection, they didn't see anything really wrong with it, so they recommended simply putting up with the noise to save money, and to keep an eye on it and replace it if/when it actually begins showing signs of significant wear.
When I turn left sharply i hear a rubbing sound. I thought it was just tire rubbing but I am not sure. What else could it be? The car is stock height stock everything. It just got new brakes and tires recently. it looks like something is rubbing the cv boot....
View 5 RepliesNot quite a U turn but more like 3 point turn without the backing up, for a wide/sharp U turn to go full circle, turning the steering wheel to the max. It's typically a left turn in this case as seldom turn wide & around the other way.
Doesn't happen all the time, might depend on the road surface (level or not, etc.) but when it happens, I hear a faint hissing sound like air leaking or running water in a pipe. What might this indicate? I don't suppose it's normal?
My car came with the Evoms CAI stage 1 with the sock. When its drawing in air I'm getting this annoying whistle sound. Ive had other intakes on my other R and this is just plain annoying.
View 19 RepliesIn the summer months when the air conditioning is in use, there is a back up of water. i can hear the water sloshing sound when the air is on and when making sharp turns it actually drains out on the front floor, both driver and passenger sides. it has also overflowed out the backseat air vents. my mechanic has told me the drain on this vehicle is tiny and becomes clogged easily. the car is parked in my garage, not left out in the elements so i disagree.
View 1 RepliesAlmost every morning, when I put my car in reverse and then step on the accelerator, I hear a sharp "clink" sound from the front of the car. After I've backed from the driveway to the street, I put the transmission in drive and step on the accelerator again and often hear the clink again. It doesn't happen EVERY time, but has become very common in the mornings. It only started doing this within the last month or two. I haven't observed any other problems.
The car has about 80k miles on it and has not had any transmission work done.
so I was heading off the freeway to take my exit at night. Didn't see there was a little curb island between the main freeway and exit. Went with the car over the curb and my right passenger tire went out.
I changed the tire and driven off, then noticed the car sound got much louder all of a sudden and when I turn the steering wheel right or left, I hear or feel a heavy sharp sensation- yet the car turns fine, it just sounds louder when I press the gas and when I turn the steering wheel I can feel my feet vibrating a bit and a soft/sharp squeak sound comes out.
What could this be?
When I'm driving over sharp bumps I hear what sounds like a small chain jingling around. I took off the hubcaps and jacked up the car to see if anything loose. I grabbed the exhaust pipe and shook it, but it didn't make any noise. I couldn't see anything that would cause it. The front right strut's rubber cover is off so could the strut make that noise?
I just read a few posts with similar problems, but one was a compression sound and another was a knock, and another was a metallic hick up. Mine is literally like a loose high pitch chain noise and change rattling in your pocket. No uniformity to the sound. But it also only happens over quick small bumps not large ones like speed bumps.
2013 SF Limited AWD = long base, 41K miles
Slow speed sharp turns left and right taking off from a stop I hear a thumping/light popping in the driveline. Seems like it could be a differential issue?
I also hear an unusual noise while accelerating in a straight line.....under throttle from a stop, it sounds like a rapid chirp on and off, every other second. Almost like a valve tick. The noise is heard under acceleration in gear, not when cruising at light throttle. I put the transmission in neutral while rolling, revved up the engine and the noise is not heard. Only happens when in gear and accelerating.
I have a very intermittent problem when starting my car. Usually it is when it's very hot outside, although not always. Start the car with the AC on, recirc, after about 3-5 seconds its a very loud "slide whistle" type sound (going from lower to higher, pretty high pitched). It only lasts about a second and sounds like something opening and creaking? Brought it to the dealership before, but its so intermittent that I doubt they tried very hard to find it. It probably only happens once or twice a month and will not duplicate if I turn off the car and start it again.
View 35 RepliesMy new to me Golf makes a strange "whistle" sound around 2000+ RPM. In any gear only when accelerating. My car does not have a turbo so its not that, the sound is coming from the motor it self. Very strange.
I dont think it comes from the tranny or clutch.
Car has 95K miles on it, t-belt and water pump done at 68k (but in 2008!, inspected it and the belt looks fine, no cracks or fraying or anything) This whistle sound is so strange. My wife says it sound like a whistle then it changes to a slight vibration sound.

I have a whistle sound mostly upon decel when the engine was cold. I have the APR down pipe installed. Today it's doing it all the time even when warm. I took the car to the dealer and they said it was prolly an exhaust leak. I took the car to my friends shop and we put the car up on the lift and listened from underneath. It sounded like the turbo was echoing in the down pipe. Sometimes when it's cold it can be very loud. So my question is if this is normal with the APR down pipe or with this turbo or is this a sign that I have a turbo failure coming?
New to the 6 liter powerstroke recently upgraded from my 7.3. Recently this odd whistle sound started and I can't quite seem to fogure out the cause. At first it only happened if I was going 70 mph and now it will do it anytime it builds more than 15lbs of boost. I tried tightening some clamps and stuff but that did nothing.
View 14 RepliesSometimes when closing either the front driver or passenger door, it seems as though the door is not closing properly and it sounds like the latches are striking metal against metal. The doors always close and the noise does not occur all the time, in fact it occurs on a very seldom basis. The noise is very annoying and definitely does not sound right. I can not repeat the problem at will and I fear the dealer will not be able to locaate, unless it happens just as they close the door. The doors do close tight, but the sound is awful (sharp metal hitting metal sound).
View 2 RepliesI've had my R since late mid-summer, and one of the first things I noticed was this clunk sound when reversing into my parking spot and when making an aggressive sharp turn. Usually Left.
After reading multiple threads on this topic, I came to the conclusion that it was my sub-frame and the bolts need replacing. I got in a GB for the tyrol subframe stiffening kit after reading some good reviews/responses.
Today, on my day off, I finally went to a mechanic to get this installed. I just changed my mechanic, and this was my first visit to the guy hes had over 10 years experience at vw and just opened up his own shop. He did a great job, torqued the bolts to spec, made me drive around, do some pulls in 2nd and 3rd gear, reverse forward etc.
So hes about to pull the car back in to retorque and.... CLUNK...
Get in the car, reproduce the sound, get the car back up on the hoist... and at this point I'm expecting the worse. He takes my control arms off, checks the end links...
Brings the car down, and the clunking sound is louder than ever. It was the weathergaurd. When I turned on the wheel it was pulling it out and when I straightened the wheel it was popping it back into place, making a big clunk sound.
This was the exact sound that I was hearing, thinking it was my subframe. The bolts that came out were not stretched or bent out of shape like the ones you see in other reviews. They're actually in great shape. I'm glad I did the Tyrol kit and do not regret it, and I definitely feel a difference when I went into some aggressive turns.
On my 2012 F150 Supercrew 4x4, when I'm entering parking lots, or other places where I'm turning and going over bumps at the same time, the front suspension make a fairly loud sound. It seems to be much worse when turning left, and the sound comes from the Passenger front side, I think.
The sound is a fairly sharp "snap" or "crack" or maybe even a "bong" kind of thing. So all you keyboard mechanics. As a bonus question, once we have guessed what it is, can I fix it myself with hand tools and very little mechanical aptitude?
My brother and I noticed my engine making this noise today, I was under the hood and he was giving the engine gas with the car in neutral.

Sounds like air pressure being released, sort of a quick whistle or squeal just as he pushes the gas pedal, coming from under the hood somewhere.
