Passat (B6) :: Rough Braking And Code P0299
Mar 28, 2012
Is it normal if im in trying to brake for a stop light and its a little rough? I think its because the car is downshifting hard or warped rotors?. I have 77k on it should i do a tranny oil change? If so where can i get one? jiffy? stealership? Also i get the code P0299 with is underboost. Should i replace anything or just check tubes?

The 1.8 passat turbo has 60k miles on it.
CEL is on, shop says it is code P0299 (I have read this code being called the "underboost" code). Local shop also wanted $1500++ to put on a new turbo. Car is driving and responding just fine.
I have searched high and low and can't find definitive answers to these questions.
I have read some posts indicating that replacing the Waste Gate Valve has improved performance and turned off the CEL. Can you replace this valve on the 1.8 without replacing the whole turbo?
Where is this valve in the engine compartment? Can I just clean it? CEL code 0299, car behaving normally, shop telling you that your need to replace the turbo?

The CEL on my Passat came on. When I scanned it with VAG-COM, the following fault code was displayed:
000665 - Boost Pressure Regulation
P0299 - 002 - Control Range Not Reached
The car also felt like it lost its power in some way, especially when the turbo kicked in. So after some research, I found out that the Diverter Valve was causing this issue. Rubber diaphragm on original valve was made from rubber and was torn. I replaced it with upgraded valve and wow what a difference!!! Very easy to do, great write up link below.

Sudden power loss experienced. CEL (Check Engine Light came on) and Glow Plug Light was flashing. Power loss is severe so really can't drive it anywhere. Turbo Failed at 5500 miles.
Mechanic quote: "Found code P0299 for turbo power under boost. Removed upper engine cover and intake hose. Checked turbo shaft and found play near intake side of turbo. Removed lower engine shield and lower hose to intercooler. Checked for metal. Contacted VW and created VTA. Instructed by VW to replace turbo. Did."
Sounds like service manager abbreviated when entering into the computer. In any case a shame that this car was in the shop for more than a week while the dilly dallied and waited for a turbo to be shipped in.
Some earlier turbo-fail threads from last summer stated dealer told them "bad batch" of turbos was being experienced by VW. Believable, particularly if they're banged out in China? Let's all hope it was a bad batch.

I'm at a loss here with my 2011 Sonata. 2.0 Engine blew last Oct took dealer 3 months to finally get that taken care of. Had car back for just a month and while hammering down to pass a truck something popped and and the car lost about 1/2 its power.Car would only do about 75 mph floored no power.Gut less on hills even more so.Took to local Hyundai dealer and the performed the usual test etc said they were getting a P0299 code supercharger under boost code.Other test revealed a internal intermittent short with the turbo,so they decided to change turbo. After new turbo installed car has slightly more power but nothing compared to what it should be.Can't even hit 100 mph with it ! Told dealer car still not right, they told me all is working as it should be lol...When ya get on the gas ya hear a slight whining noise like a turbo whining it made this noise before they change old turbo as well.To me it as is there is no boost what so ever but yet they say all is ok..

I have a 2011 ecoboost with 69000 miles and I am starting to get the dreaded P0016 code along with the occasional P0299. I am almost done making payments on it but I am hesitant about sinking the kind of money that it takes to repair the timing issues. SO the big question, is it worth keeping and making the repair or should I trade it and get a new 2016??

At 65 mph, egt was running between 1050-1150, turbo at 13-14 psi, rpm 2300. Code p0299 pops up. Before this the turbo would spool up to 28 psi going up hills. After it would not go over 16 and sounded funny. Truck is a 2005 excursion 4x4 with just under 200k miles . Trailer is about 10k pounds. No tuner. What do I need to be looking into? Is this too much for the truck to handle?

I just got back from a trip across the state to see the Miami boat show! Truck was running just fine on the trip over, EOT/ECT delta around 9* (seems a little high to me, Im hoping because im running 35's, but can someone back me up on this?)
On the trip back, cruising at 70, I noticed the check engine light went on... I didn't have it under heavy throttle or obscure circumstances... My ScanGauge 2 showed that I had a P0299, which as Ive read means something relating to underboost?
I cleared the code. And the CEL never showed again in the last 100 miles... Could this just be a quirk? Or should I be more worried about it?

My 2006 3.6 awd has developed a propensity to roughly downshift when braking at higher speeds particularly on inclines. The VW shop cannot replicate the problem, but a tech is driving the car for a few days. What might be the cause of this?

Can a leaking Y Pipe throw a P0299? Dealership says that is my problem. My MAP at idle is 14.4 EBP is 17 - 18. At 60mph MAP is 20 EBP is 26-28. Boost is 10-20 .. Truck drives great no apparent issue. P0299 only code and appears when cold first start of day. If I clear it it goes away for the rest of the day and only comes back occasionally. Twice in 5 days only at cold start. 2005 F350, 100% stock, Ford filters all. Scan guage 2 for readings....

I'm having a little trouble with my 05 Excursion 6.0L .... We took off camping the other day pulling our 30' camper and the engine light came on pretty much as soon as we hit the highways. I checked my Dash boss and it came up as P0299 under boost condition. The truck never skipped a beat. The boost gauge never dropped and it seemed to have lots of power. Actually I've noticed too much boost while pulling. It's climbed up to 36psi before and was still climbing when I backed off the throttle. I'm thinking the turbo is fine but not sure what to check next.

He has a 2013 F-150 XLT with the Ecoboost. He has 29,000 miles on the truck.
He is ~1,300 miles into his trip; and has about another 4,500 to go! On Friday, his check engine light came on (while towing). The next day it went back off. Yesterday, the light came back on (while not towing this time). He took the truck into a Ford Dealer in Rapid City, SD this morning. The CEL light was still on this morning when he arrived at the dealership. The dealership said the code is P0299 - Turbo Underboost.
They said they've run tests and can find nothing wrong. Naturally, he is not very happy being this far from home with 3 more weeks of vacation left and his truck acting up. Especially since the CEL light is on but the dealer can find nothing wrong. I'd be puckered-up too!
Experienced this Turbo Underboost condition? What was the cause? How can the CEL light be on but the dealership not be able to find a problem?

2011 Ford f350 6.7 diesel ... Is this a problem we need to have fixed?

I am fairly new to working on diesel engines. I was towing a camp trailer and got a P0299, Turbo Charger Underboost engine code. I never gotten any other codes other than this one when towing. I decided to pull the turbo and clean the vanes. Everything seemed to go back together good but now I hear what sounds like an air leak coming from the turbo area. The boots on the intercooler pipe are in good shape, I only loosened the clamps at the intercooler and the turbo. Left the boots on the pipe. I have tightened the clamps around the exhaust pipe connections with no change. I also seem to get a slower response from the turbo and possibly not as much psi as normal (according to dashboard gauge). I have driven the truck five or ten miles trying to work the turbo and have not gotten any engine codes to this point.

I recently acquired a B6 Passat and in the past few weeks it has been throwing the P0299 followed by P2004 code (I say followed by because the P0299 shows up first after I cleared the codes).
I'm quite aware of what the codes stand for but not sure if one can be related to another. The under-boost is commonly caused by the bad N75 and the other bad Flapper motor.
My question is; can a bad N75 cause the flapper to remain stuck open or can the flapper its self cause under-boost?

Last night when I was towing my son's Ranger home - somebody stole all his gas & he thought the fuel pump quit - heard a pop and the truck started running like crap. Thought I had blown the CAC boot loose but that wasn't the case. As it turns out, the tube for the EBP sensor came off from the manifold.
I had taken it loose about a year ago to clean it out. I guess I didn't tighten it well enough. Truck blew black smoke, lost boost, and filled the cab with exhaust fumes. Easy enough fix, kind of hard to diagnose because that's not expected. Just throwing it out the for somebody's future search.

I've got two error codes that are persistent. The underboost code will be fixed (I HOPE) when I replace the diverter valve which is currently sitting in my trunk.
But I'm getting a persistently intermittent P0303.
Here's whats going on:
-Some mornings, I can start the car and get a very minor rough idle, it seems to miss very occasionally.
-Some mornings, PERFECT Idle.
-Some mornings, Flashing CEL, very rough idle, P0303.
It seems to go away after about 30 seconds to a minute regardless. Sometimes ver minor rough idle comes back on hot start, but not enough to set a code.
What I've done:
-Replace spark plugs. (all 4)
-Replace offending coil with brand new one.
Still having the same issues!
Can these two codes be related, and once I replace the diverter valve, things will be better?

What to do 2011 F550 RampTruck 11,850 miles on it the vehicle has been back to the dealer 5 times for the same trouble code P0299. After the last time it was in they had it for 2 weeks seemed to be fixed. Last week one of my drivers was towing a Chevy S10 50 or so miles and heard a very faint ticking like a stone in the tire that got instantly worse and before he could pull over started rapping and stalled out. We towed it back to the dealer they removed the Cab disassembled the engine and found a "blown piston" is there quote. What should we do about this problem the dealer is supposedly fighting with Ford and Ford doesn't want to put in a new engine. They want to fix it instead....

Driving home from work this evening and engine light lights up, also car started to idle very rough.... long story short got the car home and checked with vag com... 2 engine codes
000768 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0300 - 001 - - MIL ON
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 11100001
Fault Priority: 2
Fault Frequency: 1
Mileage: 86567 km
Time Indication: 0
Date: 2012.12.31
Time: 14:26:57
[Code] .....
After looking around online found out it could be a variety of reasons... gonna change spark plugs tomorrow hoping that's the problem... next cheapest fix would be the ignition coils... I'm just hoping its not internal, like piston or rings.
It's a 2007 Passat Wolfsburg 2.0T.... just went over the 53k mark.

I now have a p0011 code on my 2001 passat 1.8t aug. this is a thinker because right before the test drive around the block i did the following
- coolant flush
-replaced the fuel filter
-cleaned the knn air filter
-rotated the tires
-oil change with new castrol 5w-40 syn. and 1/2 a bottle of lucas syn oil stabilizer.
With a few phone calls a possible cause is the timing chain skipped a tooth cause of the lucas being to thick, other cause could be the tensioner finally went out?
Right know the car car has a rough idle and seems to be finding idle , and a noise from the engine around 4000 rpm.
I am waiting for the engine to cool off before i open her up to check timing.. if the chain is off a a tooth what could be the cause?

Our 2.0T (2008 Passat Komfort Wagon) with 70K miles is sitting in a mall parking lot and won't turn over. The lights and accessories all function just fine, and don't change/benefit from a battery jump. DRLs and all dash indicators light up like normal.
We push in the key fob and absolutely nothing happens. No error messages or anything. I tried a half dozen times; no change. Two things to know:
1) The car is under a recall for defective Electronic Steering Column Lock. I understand this can invoke the immobilizer? Car does seem immobilized. (I hadn't gotten the car in for the recall.)
2) The car recently ran rough and threw an Emissions system code. I hadn't gotten that code read, yet, but the roughness sorted itself out. I think this is unrelated and may be a case of "car wash syndrome" as my wife and son occasionally run the car for a minute or less to move it from the driveway to the street.
