Passat (B6) :: Odd Clacking Noise From Front End

Jan 16, 2011

A few months ago I noticed there was an odd clicking noise from the front end. At first it was noticeable when reversing the car with a fair amount of lock on. It has become progressively worse now and there is a (single) loud clack that is heard and clearly felt through the driver's foot-well (right hand side here in Oz.) It happens during heavy braking and enthusiastic cornering. The vehicle is 3 years old, out of warranty with a hefty amount of k's on the clock. The car will be going to my dealer (when he recovers from his flood damage. I'm guessing suspension wear and tear.

Golf V R32 :: Front Brake Pads Makes Clacking Noise

The front pads on the R shift from one side of the caliper to the other whenever I move from forward to reverse they make a loud "clack". I thought it might be an O.E. pad issue, but I've changed the pads out to EBC's, but still no bueno. The new pads fit snuggly into the calipers and seemed to have solved the problem at first, but about 5k km's in, they're making the same noise.

I have anti-rattle springs installed, but they're not working. Is there supposed to be a pair of shims between the caliper sliders and the pads grooves that the previous owner removed for some reason? I don't think so, because that car only had 25k km on it when I purchased it; but you never know.

I30 - Infiniti :: 1996 - Loose Rattling / Clacking Noise From Front End

I recently traded in my old '96 Infiniti for this great 2001 PT Cruiser. It drives great ,,mileage is at 76K and in very good condition .. except for this. Whenever I am driving and going over minor or major bumps I get a lot of loose RATTLING, clacking noise from the front end. Obviously from the tires bouncing up and down. Is this typical for this particular PT? I remember having that in an old Jeep of mine too. Very boxy sounding in the front.

My wife and I had traded both of our cars in..2009 Versa for a 2013 Chevy Sonic--1996 infiniti for a 2001 PT Cruiser

Sonata I45 (YF - 2011+) :: Clacking From Front Suspension

So this clacking and thunking from the front suspension is something we all have to live with? Second. Dealer says everything tight. I think its the strut mounts because the noise seems to at top of dash behind the fire wall. It sounds like two metal balls knocking together clack clack.: Seems to getting worse as the kms rack up.

Sonata NF (2006-10) :: 2007 V6 Front End Clacking?

My car is a 2007 Sonata SE V6, first off looking for good suspension kits that will lower my car (just a little), and mainly stiffen my ride up ALOT because it's way too soft. OK to my point, this car sat for awhile maybe 4 or 5 months well my dad gave it to me and once I started driving it I've noticed that the front end on both sides clacks like crazy hitting bumps, it really sounds like when a car bottoms out, I'm not the best with suspension parts, to me it seems like busted shocks, is there a way I can test different parts of my front suspension to diagnose it?

Sonata NF (2006-10) :: Loud Clacking Noise From Engine

Yesterday I noticed a slight clacking noise coming from the engine, but it was only when I was just barely on the gas. It wasn't there at idle. Now today after an hour drive, it is loud, and at all rpm's. What could it be?

Prius (2004-09) :: Replaced Gas Engine But Same Clacking Noise

I have a 2006 Prius with 215000 miles but the engine developed a clacking noise that could of been bottom end, could of been lifters or could of been a broken timing chain tensioner......anyways I decided to purchase a used pruis engine from a totaled 2006 Prius with 102k miles for $200.

I installed the engine, removing it from the top rather then dropping it from below.

Xb - Scion :: 2005 - Clacking Noise And Rough Idle

I have a couple of questions about my trusty 2005 Scion xB. First, a little bit about my car and how I use it. I have a 2005 Scion xB which I bought used about 2 years ago and has not given me trouble except for the dreaded power coil on the NUMBER 2 PISTON that nice Leigh done suffered a while ago. I do part time driving for one of those online car services in Baltimore that the cabbies loathe and the potholes in that town are going to be death of my beautiful car.

I am fanatical about maintenance with my car keeping track of the needed changes with an app on my smartphone

Issue #1, I notice that at low speed on rough roads, there is a clacking noise coming from the forward right hand wheel. It seems to match the rotation of the wheel. It only happens when I drive on uneven (aka BALTIMORE) roads at low speeds. I want to nip it on the bud before it becomes a mechanic's boat payment!

Issue #2. I changed the power coil on the Number 2 Piston and it's running well, but as I'm driving much more than usual the car runs a little rough when I'm idling on drive, like on a street light or stop sign. Now this is not that big a problem, but as I'm doing this car service, I'd like a smoother idling for the benefit of my passengers.

I love my Scion and would love at least a year or two more on it as it is a good, fuel efficient, quirky car!

Camry :: 2003 - Clicking / Clacking Engine Noise When Started

I have an 03 Camry that has a clicking clacking engine noise when started, is sounds like a lifter or a valve; however after letting it idle for about 20mins, the noise disappears and it runs fine. So far i've done.

1. Flush Engine
2. Change oil and even used a very thick oil 20w 50.

Here is a video clip of what it sounds like with the noise and without the noise towards the end of the video. YouTube

Is it even the engine? Is it a blown head gasket? Is the engine done?

Dodge Neon :: 2000 - Clacking Noise At Low Rpm After Releasing Gas Pedal

2000 Dodge Neon clacking noise at low rpm after releasing gas pedal. Around the 2000 rpm range letting off the gas produces a clacking noise. I have listened to the engine with a long screwdriver at idle and revving. The noise is not always present in this condition. Although when it has come up it seams to coming from behind the engine. Does not seem to be valves, connecting rod or main bearings etc.... Only at low rpm 1200 thru 2000 rpm WHEN releasing the throttle. Clacking seams to be timed with the crankshaft as it reduces the sound as the engine reduces rpm, not at the speed of the cams. Sounds fine at idle, going through gears and at freeway rpm's.

Volvo - V40 :: Clacking Noise Coming From Area Near Glove Compartment

My trusted Volvo mechanic can't figure this out. Shortly after starting my car, there is a clacking noise that seems to be coming from an area near the glove compartment. It lasts for several minutes and then stops. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the car. I've had it serviced, but can't figure out what causes this noise.

Mazda :: 2006 - Ticking / Clacking Noise Coming From Underneath The Car

My 2006 Mazda 3 (2.3 engine) has been producing some new "ticking/clacking" sounds. They seem to be coming from underneath the car (nope, no critters there), seem to last for only the first 1/4 mile, seem to let up after I apply the brakes a time or two. The also increase in frequency as the car speeds up, making me suspect something wheel-related.

Naturally, when I dropped it off at the garage, the techs could not replicate the sound. As I drove off the premises, it kicked up again, but by the time I went around the freakin' block to show the techs, the sound had stopped! I suspect the car is playing with me. It has 100600 miles on it...

My 2005 Hyundai Elantra starts immediately, but you hear a clacking noise coming from the right side of the engine. It stops when the car warms up. It sounds as if some part is slapping or banging against something in the engine. The car starts and runs just fine. There is no hesitation at all while driving or when stopped at traffic light.

Passat (B6) :: Low Speed Front End Noise

OK, so I'm looking for a little insight before I head back to the dealer. Currently running an H&R Cup Kit (about 6,000 Mile) and been happy BUT:

1. @ install I replaced F&R Upper Strut Bearings & alignment by dealer, also swapped to F&K Shorter Front Sway Bar Links.
2. Front Control Arm Bushings replaced under warranty by dealer about 2,000 Miles after Cup Kit Install.
3. Front Upper Strut Bearings replaced under warranty about 4,000 Mile after suspension install due to a slight clicking noise at low speeds when turning hard to the Left (so only 2,000 Miles on the last set and they were replaced).
4. Installed 26mm H&R Rear Sway Bar about 1,000 Miles ago on softest setting.

So where I am at today is the low speed front end noise is back and worse, I now have noise no matter the degree of the turn. Also sounds like sub-frame is lose when hitting speed bump etc (first time on this VW but been through it with the last Audi). My question is what are different peoples opinions as I think I'm overlooking something before it goes back to the dealer again. Sounds like the front spring is binding a bit as I can hear the clank as the tension releases but this can also be the front sway bar.

Passat (B5) :: Front Humming Noise?

My car (5spd b5) developed front humming noise. I have changed bearings, axles, and tires and it didn't work. I also checked the transmission oil level today and its normal and clean. The noise is not engine related and it depends on the speed only! starts at about 15mph and it gets worse as I go faster. At 60mph the noise is annoying. As the car becomes lighter going over a crest, the noise disappears and comes right back when weight is back on the wheels and suspension. All new front-end suspension, tires, bearings and axles and nothing seems to improve this.

Passat (B6) :: Scraping Noise Coming From The Front End

I have a scraping noise which sounds like it is coming from the front end but only around 10 to 20 mph. It can only be heard when driving down a quiet street, next to a building (mcdonald's drive through) or in my parking garage at work. Always makes the noise, it sounds like it something was scraping on one of the rotors.

Purchased car in August with 26,000 miles from a non VW dealer --- first mistake. Two days after signing papers showed signs of valve body issue. Took it to VW dealer near work and after two days they finally got OK to replace valve body and all is good. About 5K to 6K miles later started hearing the noise. At 36,000 the tranny started shifting hard and having problems up shifting occasionally, would rev up really high and then finally go into gear. Took 3 service visits for the same dealer to be able reproduce it and then they finally figure out they left out 2 liters (their calculation) of fluid when doing the valve body, so it got driven 10,000 miles while 2 liters low. They basically acted like they were doing me a favor by adding the fluid they left out in the first place and said only time will tell if there is any damage.

Took it back to the same dealer again for the scraping noise. Supposedly 3 people drove the car and never heard the noise. CEL came on yesterday and I decided to try a new dealer and have them look into the noise while it was there. Did a ride along with the service writer and tech. Writer is pretty sure he heard the noise and tech wants it back after the holidays to road test more and try driving in some quiet areas.

It has been determined that the car does not make the noise if there is no weight on the front end. I have jacked it up and spun the wheels and first dealer claims they had it on the lift in drive and could not hear. New dealer is thinking bearing noise that is only heard when bearing has weight on the front wheels or something to do with the CV axles or something in the tranny. If it is the tranny well we know who's fault that is.

Passat (B6) :: Crunch Noise From Front End When Hit A Bump

I've just recently gotten an 06 passat 2.0t and had some questions. When I drive the car everything sounds fine until I hit a bump then I get this crunch noise from the front end. Crunch is the best way I can think to describe it because its not really a squeak. I'm new to the b6 but not dubs at all. I just had to part ways with my mk2 which I put alot of wrench time in on and I've done minor tinkering on my wifes mkv rabbit.

Passat (B5) :: Clunking Noise In Front End When Car Goes Over A Dip At Speed

When I drive over a bump or the car goes over a dip at speed, there is clunking sound from the front end. It seems to be much more noticeable in this cold weather, hence my current concern. I have not looked into it at all. I live on a bumpy dirt road, so the front end gets a workout.

The car has 39,800 miles. So the 40k is almost here, and the 4 years is almost here as well so I cannot just not drive the car for a while.

But if I can get a common problem fixed under warranty, I will take the time tomorrow to deal with this. The other weird thing in this cold snap is that the VW never seems to get to 190 deg, like it usually does (middle of temp gauge), it will be a few notches below. Normal situation? It will go back to 190 if I turn off the heat and drive a bit harder, but with the heat blasting (baby in car) and very mellow driving, it doesn't quite make it...
