Starter driving this morning and heard what one could describe as a metallic rattle from somewhere at the front end: like a stone tossed in a can. Stopped and did a brief visual inspection but did not see anything. Shifted to N and revved the engine all quiet. Started driving faster, the sound went away. Found some old threads about brake pads rattling. could that be it?
View 17 RepliesAfter driving our 2013 Passat for 215 miles, we noticed that there was a rattling noise coming from the left front wheel area but only at slow speeds (under 10 mph). The noise disappeared at higher speeds. Today, we took the car to the dealership but they could not find anything wrong.
View 4 Repliesjust about a week ago, i've noticed this weird rattle coming from the front end, sounds metallic (maybe something is loose) but it only happens when I accelerate from 0-80km/h, but the sound isn't there if I slowly accelerate. Nothing seems to be wrong with how it runs, its just the sound that sounds horrible, like nails on a chalkboard.
Also, I've noticed the engine ticks really loud when it gets started. However, the sound goes away after a minute of idling.
There is about 19,000 kms on it and I got it in January .. I travel a lot maybe a little too much.. I want to take it in to the dealership, but I'm pretty far from it and would like to know what it could be before I take it anywhere to get fixed.
2008 F150 4x4 27000 mi There is an intermittent metallic /rattle sound (like marbles or a chain in a can) seems to be coming from front passenger side; sometimes on first acceleration , sometimes after turning a corner, sometimes after hitting a bump. Doesn't last more than a few seconds Had my mechanic friend look at it on hoist and no apparent loose parts in exhaust system or breaks; 1st noticed it last August ( 7000 miles ago) but it subsides and then reappears with no distinct pattern. best guess is a bad wheel bearing but it's never gotten any worse; other guess is transfer case/ chain problem but 4x4 use isn't much and it goes in and out of 4x4 mode with no problems.
View 2 RepliesI had my brakes done almost two weeks ago and last week I noticed a metallic sounding clunk front right (I think) when I went over a bump. It's hard to replicate but I've heard it a few times. On the weekend I reversed and heard that same clunk. When I went forward slowly, I could hear a sound that can only be described as a few screws in a rotating soda can. When I sped up, all sounds disappeared.
I took it to my tech yesterday on the way home. He found a bit of a loose fit between the new caliper and what it attaches to, which he fixed. However, the sound persists. Tech said all suspension components seem tight and normal.
I have taken it to the dealership and they claim they can't hear anything and I'll have to wait for it to get worse. The noise emanates from the front left wheel well area. It is only heard at low speeds (under 20-25mph) on areas of semi-rough or undulating pavement. It sounds like a loose shock or something....
I've seen on other boards that there have been problems with other Lexus vehicles and the struts, upper and lower insulators, mounts and bump stops.
I have a 2004 F-150 SCrew Lariat 4X4 with 80K miles. Over the past month or so, every once in awhile there would be a loud metallic "clacking" sound (kind of like sticking a peice of aluminum in a bike's spokes) that would start at higher speeds and would turn into a low pitched whirring gear sound as I slowed down and eventually there would be a thud followed by a sensation of running over a small bump and the noise would be gone. Kind of confusing I know, but that is the best way to describe it. My gut feeling is a wheel bearing or transmission problem....

Over the last several months I've noticed a rattling noise coming from the right front quadrant of the car when driving at highway speeds (60 MPH and up). I also notice that it seems to diminish and/or go away entirely when I drive in the rain. I took it to the dealer and they said I need a new right front wheel bearing/hub.

View 3 RepliesGetting a metallic rattling sound between 2.4 and 3k rpms under load? It can't be reproduced by just revving however, I can reproduce this easily while holding it in gear with the triptronic and accelerating in that rpm range. I want to say it sounds like a exhaust or heatshield rattle but it's coming from the front the car, like behind the firewall or directly below me. I took it to the dealer and of course, in a typical dealer fashion, they cannot hear it.

Happens only when going over sharp bumps and even road reflectors. Had this happen on my 2001 Highlander. Turned out to be incorrectly installed brake caliper. Needed new spring clips. Don't think this is the issue in the v. Have about 10k miles.
Can only hear the sound with drivers window down and while driving along a curb, k-rail or wall. What's up?
I'm back with another question! My 2006 Prius now has 60,XXX miles and the other day while driving with the windows down, I was climbing a hill to my house and when the engine is at a certain RPM, there is a metallic sound that comes from under the car, but more in the front. You can't even hear it when the windows are up barley, but more when they are down, you can hear it, especially when you're beside a wall or guard rail and the sound can reverberate back.
View 2 RepliesEver since day one with my new MKVII GTI, there has been a consistent metallic (tinny - like the sound of someone shaking a soda can with the tab inside) coming from what seems like the passenger side footwells. This rattle can only be heard at low RPM. I can hear it most around 2,000 RPM, and I can force it to happen by applying light pressure to the gas peddle. I don't know if the rattle doesn't happen at higher RPM, or if I just can't hear it over the engine and the typical road noise. The rattle is pretty consistent in tempo.
I've done some research, but can't determine if it's the waste gate actuator, fuel lines, or something else. I'm new to maintaining cars properly and I'm not the most mechanically savvy person, but I want to learn. So, I haven't tried to locate the actuator because I don't know where to start and I haven't tried to "tie down" the fuel lines because I'm not comfortable doing this fix on my own.
I've taken the car to the dealership once, and I was told that the waste gate actuator doesn't even exist on the MKVII. Interestingly, two different techs told me this. They deny that the actuator is even real, much less causing any problems. I suppose it could also be the armrest, as some people say it tends to sound like it's coming from the passenger side.
So on my new 2.0T Sonata I noticed a brief metallic rattle in the 2K-3K RPM range when you rev the throttle. I was very concerned.
The sales rep said it may be the heat shielding that is coming lose. He was concerned and said to bring it back when Service is open.
I just got back from the dealer: The service manager didn't know what it was but his tech said it was part of the turbo system, it's a 1/4 inch bar (parallel with the bumper) you can plainly see between the firewall and engine. He said what it did but I forgot to take notes.
I listened to another 2.0 Turbo Sonata on the lot and it has the exact same rattle when rev'd.
2003 Dodge Caravan Sport has a metallic rattle near the alternator. It gets louder when it is in Drive or Reverse and you have your foot on the brake. Also, it gets even louder when having your foot on the brake in Drive or Reverse and the heat or air is on. My husband thought it was the power steering pump so we replaced that but it didn't fix it.

Belt squeal. First thing in the morning, reversing out of the driveway and put in drive and I get a belt squeal from the engine. Adjust the tensioner or something else?
Lately I've started having an intermittent metallic noise that has been bugging me. At first it occurred on long runs and sounded like it could have been the brakes or something similar. It is not too loud but is continuous, rather like gently rattling your set of keys.
It got steadily worse and I eventually tracked it down to the passenger seat. When I held the seat the metallic rattle stopped.
Have an '07 with 117k miles so well out of warranty. There is a very pronounced metallic rattle coming from the rear of the cabin when going over moderate sized bumps or listening to audio at moderate levels. Did some troubleshooting and have narrowed the noise down to somewhere above the rear center of the headliner. If I press slightly upwards on the headliner at this location, the noise stops.

View 6 RepliesMy 2001.5 1.8T Passat (81K) is at the local European car specialist to look into a metallic rattle coming from the front end, mostly the right wheel. From reading similar posts here and asking a few questions, I think it may have something to do with the brake pad change done a few months ago (the sound disappears when the brakes are even tapped, then it comes back over cracks in the pavement). It may need something simple, like shims or a spring to keep things from rattling. Then again, it may be the notorious VW/Audi tie rod/control arm thing. Somewhere in here I may have seen that VW dealers were fixing problems with those parts for free or at reduced cost as a good will measure. Is this true? Would that only cover the earlier B5 (MY 97-2000)? I'm wondering if I should take it to VW instead of my mechanic based on the cost. Also, is this so complicated that I should leave it to VW anyway?
