This has happened twice so far, both with around 1/2 tank. After driving for ~25 minutes to work, I will go to shut the car off, and after pushing the key in and pulling it out, there is a mechanical noise from the rear of the car that lasts for about 2 full seconds. Is this the sound of the fuel pump on its way out? Or just an electrical gremlin (no! not in a VW!)?
View 7 RepliesI just purchased an 87 f250 w/ a carb'd 460. I purchased it with the mech fuel pump swapped out to an electric. The previous owner states that they gave him the wrong electric pump and I should exchange it for a different one. The reason for him putting it on was to get it running for me to hear it run.
My question: Is this even recommended? I wouldn't mind staying with an electric pump up front. If it is recommended, what would be a suitable pump to replace it with, as in flow/feeding characteristics?
Also, it only feeds from the rear tank, which also has a bad fuel pump. I'd like to get both tanks functioning again. I'd rather not deal with the tank switching valve due to what I've read about them. Has anyone ever hooked up a manual valve and just switched tanks that way? I've searched this site extensively and couldn't find anything. I know I'm not the first to have thought about it.
I have a 2013 elantra with about 26,000 miles on it. I usually don't use it on weekends and on Monday's it makes a noise that lasts about 3 seconds. I believe the noise comes from a pulley that is not turning.
When this first happened, pulley had a couple of lines where paint peeled off and now the pulley has almost no black paint left. Took the car to dealer, explained how the noise only happens after not using the car for a couple of days, and they have not been able to repeat the problem, they indicate that they can't replace the pulley for this reason and that the wear on the pulley is normal.
What is causing the issue?
I have a 2003 Subaru Forester with 240K miles on it. When I start the engine in the morning, there's a squealing noise under the hood that lasts for a few seconds. (Usually goes away as soon as I pop the hood and look at the engine.) I think it's one of three things: AC compressor, alternator, or power steering pump, but I haven't been able to isolate the noise to one of the three. I don't want to wind up replacing all three.
View 4 RepliesI just bought a used 2003 Pilot with 62,000 miles. I quickly noticed a that I hear a faint rumble sound that lasts about 2 seconds at speeds between 30 and 40. It sounds like I ran over a very short and shallow rumble strip. It can happen very quickly as I slowly accelerate. It only happens once, but not every time that I slowly accelerate. It also happen as I am coasting at these speeds. I took it back to the dealer, but they are puzzled. They thought I was crazy until I took them on a test drive and we eventually heard it. They tried adjusting the sway bar, but the sound continues.
View 8 RepliesAs the title says, I have a 2014 Passat TDI that was bought brand new back in September. I now have 6,300 miles on it.
Anyways, started it up last night, and started backing down my driveway that has a bit of an incline. Basically, I just have to ride the brake into the street, no acceleration needed.
As soon as the car got into the street, the engine just stopped. Not stuttering or anything, just like I had turned the key off, but all electrical systems still on. Put it in park, foot on brake, and it would not even turn over, just a dead key.
So, turned the key off, removed key, opened door, and re-attempted to start. Engine started at this point.
Needless to say, I'm a little unnerved at a brand new $30K vehicle doing this at only 6K miles. Dealership can't get it in until next Thursday.
Also, I noticed that my fuel pump will randomly continue to run after shutting the vehicle off for about 5 seconds. Fuel pump is extremely loud and after shutting off the vehicle the pump sounds like this (make a fuel pump noise outloud and read) - "weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee wee wee weeeeeeeeeee" and then shuts off. I've owned a slew of vehicles (5 other diesel trucks included) and not a one of them has done this.
My Honda has 61000 miles on it, it's an automatic . Just had oil change done at 59000, told was good for 5000 mil. The last few days I noticed a trrrr (kind of like a playing card in bike spokes but louder) noise coming from the front of the car, it lasts for a few seconds then stops. It happens mostly when it is in drive but not moving. Stops if I put in any other gear, doesn't happen while I have foot on gas. I did hear it very faintly today while coasting up to a red light otherwise it's always happened while in drive with foot on break. First time it happened was a few seconds after I stopped at a red light. Second time it happened was after the car was parked for an hour. When I got back in and threw it in drive it did it.

I noticed that when I turned on the heater plus fan that it would often (but not always) make a ch, ch, ch, ch, ch, ch sound that would last maybe 3 seconds then fade away, only to be reawakened when I started accelerating after a traffic light. For a while this winter it seemed to happen multiple times in a jaunt about town. (I would usually get a bit nervous, promise myself to have it looked at by my Echo car-diologist, and then turn off the fan for a while.) Just when I was about to take it in, it stopped happening, even with the heat/fan on full. And now it has started happening again. I know peanuts about cars, but my intuition says it's some kind of belt in the fan that's slipping. The car has about 75,000 miles on it....
View 2 RepliesThis applies to a 2001 F-350 with 73,000 miles on the engine. Engine oil level is good, batteries charged, HPOP reservoir is full and passes Cody test with flying colors. Fuel pump runs for 20 seconds at key on. Start takes about 6 seconds. If I shut the key off and restart immediately it starts in under 2 seconds but if I wait about 30 seconds it's a 6 second start. Here is an AE that I ran on it, it has me stumped. FWIW it seems to start quicker when AE is hooked up. ?? An odd whir type of noise comes out from somewhere under the hood when I first turn the key on and when I clear the codes with AE.

Clearly some system in the car initializes itself when the door opens, even before the key is inserted. What is it?

This has happened to me 4 times now in the 7 years I've owned my car. It happened so infrequently I thought the problem was the pump's sensor was not working properly. However now it's happened twice the last two times I've tried to fill up. On Friday my son was supposed to fill the car and could only get 1 gallon in and the fuel pump kept clicking off as if the car is full of gas. The bars never moved and I thought the problem was the pump. Then today, Sunday 2 days later, I decided to go ahead and fill it up. I have 250 miles to drive and want a full tank of gas. The tank shows 3 bars. I started fueling and it clicked off at 1 gallon. So I pulled the pump trigger again and tried to force more fuel in and it stopped and wouldn't add anymore than 1.7 gallons.
So now I have a long drive tomorrow and I can't figure out why the pump is clicking off as if the tank is full yet it can't be because I drove 250 miles since my son tried to put gas in and it's showing I have 3 bars.
When I open the drivers side door I hear a mechanical noise like the seat is moving back or sideview mirrors are adjusting, you know that kind of grindy electric mechanical sound. But I don't see anything moving, just hear a motor working? What is moving or supposed to be moving? I have a 2012 2.5L SEL no memory seats.

View 2 RepliesI have an 02' Blazer 2Door 2WD 4.3L vortec. Great truck - very low miles. About a month ago the fuel pump went out. She was showing signs / not starting on the 1st/2nd try and finally wouldn't start. It's a 12 year old pump and I was also that guy trying to make til Friday on a quarter tank - so no complaints so far. I checked the relay and fuse, all good there - so I bought a new AC Delco and fuel filter. Drained and dropped the tank, cleaned and dried the tank and installed the new fuel filter. The pump came with a new pigtail - so I wired in the new pigtail, attached the hoses and re-attached the tank. Not bad for 6 hours of work ( first time - don't judge ). She fired right up and ran like a champ / about a week later I stopped and filled up the gas tank. Next day - no start / no whine from pump / 0 psi at the schrader valve.
Assuming it must be an electrical issue - I dropped the tank and tested the gray power wire / 12 volts. But to be thorough / in case I made a mistake / I stripped and re crimped all the connections, heat-sealed the sleeves and wrapped in all in electric tape. Tested the pump - she hummed like a kitty. Re-installed the tank and she fired up like a champ. Drove around a couple of days - stopped and filled the tank with gas. Same thing - wouldn't start right there at the pump. i poured fuel in the intake - she would start and run until the fuel burned up.
No hum from the pump. had it towed home ... again ... began to siphon my now full tank of fuel to drop it yet again. At about 1/2 way , I tried her and the pump primed and she started right away. For the past two weeks I have been unable to make it NOT WORK - but i am worried to go very far , less i be stranded again. on the gauge I get 60 with the key on and 56 running. With the engine off the pressure holds for quite a long time - well over an hour+. So what would cause a brand new AC Delco pump to not work only when the tank is full - then start working when some of the fuel is removed?
Every once in a while, I hear a sound coming from under my car, possibly the passenger side, that sounds like I am pulling a tin can around. It only lasts about 3 seconds. Sometimes I'll hear it when sitting at a red light, or accelerating from a complete stop. Then the sound disappears. This doesn't happen all the time, but I do feel like I'm hearing it more often as time is going on.
I did a little research online, and some say it could be a rock under my heat panel, but that seems too easy. I don't have any issues with shifting gears or accelerating.
2000 GMC JIMMY 4x4
Two months ago I bought a used 2006 Sonata v6 with 54,000 miles. After a few hundred miles I began to hear a rattle on cold start that lasts approx 5 secs. I did my research and saw the TSB concerning the timing chain tensioners. The TSB instructs the dealer to turn the engine off after reaching operating temp then restart after 10 minutes. If there was no noise after the ten minute start then the car is operating normally. My car does not rattle after the 10 minute start up. I just can't see this as a normal characteristic. What could be causing this noise?

Any way, I have two noises that probably should not be there,,, one is a whistle chirpy noise from the front sounds like a bird trying to get internet dialup...thinking secondary air pump, however..does change pitch when turning wheels.... and dies down a little when warmed up... but liveable for now..
Fuel pump, it resonates in your head!! It must be stopped... Is this common for all B7 Passats? High pitched annoyance just kills that new car feeling... I am only at 600 kilometers. its only heard when the radio is off but still slightly heard while driving.
I read filling the tank up with gas might work....but no not even a little. I'm thinking a trip to the dealer to replace the pump... if that doesn't work will dynamat solve the problem?
The engine starts with knocking, rattling, and vibration that lasts for about 5 seconds. It seems to be an intermittent, rare event. With nearly 250,000 Prius in the North American market and the onset of cooler weather, it is time to see how frequently this occurs.
View 19 Replies2006 Sonata LX. It's only on a cold start up and lasts for about 30-45 seconds tops..and then it goes away. Car has 74k on it. Treated well. Only use synthetic oil and no check engine lights. Last oil change I put 5w 30 in it. I know it says to use 5w 20. Could this be the problem?
View 17 RepliesI have a 2005 Honda CRV with 139,000 miles that recently developed a miss. It usually does it while holding steady at 50 mph but only lasts for a couple seconds. If it misses may do it once or twice and then nothing the rest of the day. Had the dealership put it on the computer for a reading and they said it's showing no misfires and is running properly. Plugs have been changed other maintenance performed and have had absolutely no issues until now.

When you first start up, there is a very loud growl coming from the intake that lasts about 20 seconds. I also noticed that the breather filter kicks in during this time as well. Is this normal? I would yes but want to understand exactly why...
