Jul 11, 2008

Passat (B5) :: CEL For N80 Valve Could Cause Bad Mileage?

My V6 4Motion Passat has a CEL for an N80 valve... tried cleaning, didn't do anything. But its only getting 400-430 kms to the tank, even for winter that's pretty bad for 95% highway driving.

Could that cause bad fuel mileage?

Passat (B6) :: Sudden Drop In Gas Mileage?

I have an 08 2.0T and it just suddenly had a huge drop in gas mileage. I recently had new tires put on and an oil change (about 35k miles). getting closer to 40k miles now and wondering what could be causing this. Usually I get about 30-33 mpg easy on the highway. Now I'm getting 24-26 mpg. Already checked the tire pressures. they're to spec. no gas leaks from what i can see.

Passat (B6) :: Sudden Loss In Gas Mileage

At 30,000 and change I had new tires and they did RVU 17D1/07 Crankcase Breather Valve Replacement recall. Ever since then I have notice a decrease in my MPG.

I was getting around 32 MPG (mostly Highway driving) or about 540 miles on a tank. Now I think i am LUCKY to get 28 or about 480.

Could it be the tires? Or is it something with this recall. I went from the Stock Michenlins to Cooper CS4 Touring. I just think 4 MPG would be alot from a tire change.

Scion - Xb :: 5 Speed - Gas Mileage Varied And Fuel Mileage Increased

I've had my XB 5-speed for nearly a year and 10000 miles. It as been dead on reliable and fun to drive. My gas mileage has varied from 26 to 31 in mixed driving and from 32 to 35 on the highway. I use premium fuel only because I can get it without ethanol. My fuel mileage also increased a couple of mpg due to getting the power robbing ethanol out. True it is probably not enough to offset the extra expense but I like not having the stuff in my car. My only dissatisfactions has been with the transmission gear ratios. They are way to low. This torquy engine could easily do with a ratio that would drop about 500 rpm for more relaxed highway cruising.

As it is, though, my XB will go up any hill or long grade without breathing hard! Another is the instrumentation. I don't mind the center mounted set-up but speedometer and trip meter for mpg ratings are both inaccurate. My speedo reads about 2.5 mph high and the fuel mileage read out has about the same error, also on the high side. I have the stock 16" tires. The clutch has a narrow engagement band and can be difficult to be smooth on. The car is fairly quiet, is comfortable and this years hot, humid summer has shown it has one of the best air conditioners I have ever experienced in a car. I thought it might be an electric unit rather than a belt driven compressor because there is absolutely no perceived drag when the compressor kicks on.

Passat (B6) :: Mileage Decreased After Switching Wheels Out

I recently changed my stock '06 Passat to the optional 17" wheels & tires..

Before the switch I would get about 28mpg on the highway, but now I'm getting 25 no matter how much I lay off the throttle.. I know they're heavier, wider tires.

Passat (B5) :: 2004 - Gas Mileage Is Dropping On Highway

I have noticed over the past few months that my gas mileage is dropping (from about 29 to 24) on the highway and I seem to have lost some power. I know the car is getting older, but where do you think I can get some of it back? The plugs are only 20K old and the air filter is new.

It is a 2004 1.8t with 109k on it.

Passat (B5) :: Ridiculous Oil Consumption - Gas Mileage Is Terrible

The Problem(s):

[1]My car burns about 4 qt's of oil every 5,000 miles. I am constantly battling to keep the dipstick properly soaked.

[2]I bought the vehicle 8 months ago, at the time I was getting about 28 mpg cty 34-36hwy. Now I get about 21 or 22 mpg cty and lucky to get 25hwy . I know it's winter but should I be seeing this kind of a loss? I am not using the heat THAT often, or atleast not often enough to cause such a decline in mpg.

[3]The first thing I did when I bought the car was get an oil change. I took it to a non VW dealer and requested synthetic, the IDIOT monkey's did not grant my request they put their bulk trash in my car and 3 days later the oil was two qts low and darker than coal. I immediately took it to a smaller shop who changed the filter and put Syntec in. What I want too know is should I be using a different oil? Could the monkeys mistake be responsible for the current oil consumption?

How do I know if my turbo gasket(s) are bad? Anything else I could do to improve economy?I use 93octane(w/o ethanol) My oil is Syntec 5W-30.

Passat (B5) :: Getting Pressure Spikes / Lousy Throttle Response And Gas Mileage

I am curious to see what you think. I had my car chipped by upsolute. For as long as I have had it and even when I took the chipping off, restoring my car to stock, i was getting pressure spikes, lousy throttle response and lousy gas mileage. For a while, I was going to the dealer every other week or so, trying to find out why my car was kicking into limp mode. Upsolute said it was the car and the dealership said it was the chipping.

Anyway last saturday I was inspecting my air filter and airbox (nice little pile of sand and a couple of leaves in there-I am sure that didn't work my mileage any). I moved the airbox a little and the hose which connects to the airbox underneath the air intake ductwork, fell off the airbox on its own. It was never clamped in place. I am told that is the hose that goes directly to the MAF Sensor.

My question, if all else is tight, do you think I have found the source of my over pressure and lousy gas mileage problems? The car certainly feels like it. I went and tightened up every hose connection I could find. My car feels like it has a new motor with a healthy growl to boot. Mileage appears to be up as well. What do you think? I thought about restoring my chipping but I wont do that.

One is that I have a very good extended warranty still in effect and don't want to risk losing it. They would love to hear the car is chipped. Then its good by policy. The other reason is that the guy who chipped it said he would put it back in but would not remove it if I am wrong. The dealership said they could not and would not restore my car to stock even though I cannot believe they don't have the tools around to do so.

Passat (B5) :: 2002 - Changed Spark Plugs But Gas Mileage Dropped To 24 MPG?

As far as I know, my Passat has never had any other spark plugs other than OEM. I could also swear that those OEM plugs always had 3 grounds. My gas mileage historically averages about 27MPG in a mixed city/highway environment.

Recently, my spark plugs were replaced and now my gas mileage has dropped to 24MPG. I had a similar problem once with my previous car (1998 Jetta GLI) and it was due to going from a three ground spark plug to a single ground plug. Putting in three ground spark plugs instantly restored the gas mileage to previous levels.

I've read repeatedly that the NKG PFR6Q is the OEM plug but it only has a single ground. I realize that my memory could be faulty, but this is driving me nuts.

Alas I can't be sure what was there before versus what's there now, but I know my previous mechanic was a stickler for OEM parts. Would switching from a multi-ground to a single-ground cause a 10%+ drop in mileage?

Passat (B5) :: 2001 VW - Rough Idle / Loss Of Power And Poor Gas Mileage

I have a 2001 VW Passat Wagon 1.8t AUG. A couple of months ago, I took it into my shop for a check engine light. The did the following work on the vehicle:

Replaced MAF sensor
Replaced broken oil level sensor
Replaced outer CV boots
Resealed my transmission pan (it was leaking)
Replaced bad vacuum hoses

When I got the car back, it was idling really rough, and one time it even stalled. Just after starting it, when I hit the gas it wouldn't respond immediately and sputtered for a little while. Once I got going it was usually OK, unless I was going uphill...where it wouldn't perform as well and the engine noise kinda wavered. I also noticed that my gas mileage wasn't nearly as good as it used to be. (I never experienced any problems like this before they did this work) So I took it back to the shop and they replaced both the front and rear 02 sensors. I still had the same problem, so I took it back, and they replaced the fuel filter. Still has the same problem.

The light came on after a month, so I took it back and it was the random cylinder misfire code...and they said that didn't really know what to do about it. So I decided to take matters into my own hands. I cleaned the MAF sensor they installed (took it out and sprayed it with cleaner) nothing. I replaced the spark plugs and while doing so found that one of my ignition coils was bad, and I replaced that as well. Turns out the AutoLite plugs that a local parts store sold me are crap for this engine (actually caused misfires) so I went and got Denso double platinum plugs the next day and put those in. And finally I changed my air filter. Still having problems.

Passat (B6) :: Rough Idle When In Drive / Slight Loss Of Power With Horrible Gas Mileage

My 07 2.0T (101k mi.) Passat idles roughly when in the drive position (at a stop light, or sign, etc.), the engine sounds "gruffy", and suffers from a slight loss of power with horrible gas milage. I've had spark plugs and the coil pack replaced two weeks ago, and still can't seem to find the source. There are no misfire codes or any others showing up. From reading many posts here, I've found that a common issue is carbon build up for similar symptoms of my car. Do I need fuel injector cleaner, and or valve stem cleaner, etc? As far as the possibility of cleaning out the intake valve, I only open the hood to add oil, washer fluid, check my oil, and wipe down the engine.

Lexus ES 2007-12 :: Gas Mileage Seems Low?

I haven't owned a Lexus in a while. I had a 95 ES300 and a 90 ES250.

I just bought an 07 with 66,000 miles on it. Amazing shape. Had it checked out at dealer, no issue other than a new battery.

I am on my second tank of gas and average about 16.5 MPG. All of my driving is to/from work, which is only about 2 miles. So, a lot of start/stop, shut off, repeat.

I do make a couple 15 mile trips a week to the store, etc. I know I shouldn't be getting 30mpgs based on this, but does 16.5 seem low?

Toyota - Corolla :: 2015 LE Plus - Bad Gas Mileage?

We bought a 2015 Corolla LE Plus this past weekend. The tank went from full to ¾ full after 38 miles of city driving. The onboard MPG calculator said it was getting 16 MPG (it’s rated 29 city/38 highway. When we took it back to the dealer the sales consultant said that’s normal – that it would improve after it got “broken in”. The car mechanic who I have taken all my Toyotas to and who has only worked on Toyota for the last 30 years says plus or minus a couple MPGs would be reasonable but not minus 13 MPG.

We drove it another 400 miles to “break it in” and during this breakin period it did get close to 38 MPG when we drove on the highway. Then I topped off the tank with gas, recorded the odometer mileage, zeroed out the onboard trip mileage recorder and the MPG calculator and my wife drove 61 city mileage. The onboard MPG calculator said it was getting 16.8 MPG and 61 miles divided by th3 3.854 that it took to top it off again = 15.8 MPG. Either way I don’t think the mileage should be this bad.

Celica :: 1991 GT Gas Mileage 19 Mpg On Expressway

I just purchased 91 Celica GT and have so far been very pleased except for one major problem. I thought Toyotas are suppose to get great gas mileage?. My car is an automatic with 150000 miles on the odometer. I'm getting around 19 mpg on the expressway. I bought this car thinking about good gas mileage. Is this normal mileage.

I've had the car tuned up (new plugs, wires, cap, etc.) I took it to my mechanic who put it on a computer and the emissions read O.K. and no code faults. I took it to a trans shop to see if the trans. was shifting O.K. and it checks out O.K.and the overdrive is working normally. I even double checked the timing to see if maybe the previous owner set the timing wrong when changing the belt. Checks out O.K.

The car seems to run and idle great with no roughness. Is this gas mileage normal and if not, how to improve it. I get better gas mileage from my 91 SUV explorer...
