If you have an intake and are under heavier acceleration, do you get any vibrations in the car while getting that growl sound?
I have the intake pipe zip tied so that it is away from the brake lines but I'm trying to figure out if the vibes are coming from just the sound frequency or something or if it's something else.

View 6 RepliesSo this vibration/ cluncking seems to be from between the front seats and mostly during off the line acceration, and from all I can find it's the flex disc, but my flex disc shows no signs of damage. Can these discs go bad without looking bad or is this possibly the hanger bearing on the driveshaft?
I am also looking for any other possibilities for the cause of this vibation/ clunking as there sounds like something is hitting the bottom of the car but there are no impact marks to show me where the issue is
Just bought my R a few months ago and love it so far. I've recently encountered a slight buzz or vibration. I'll get down to the nitty gritty and not bore you with long drawn out information. Basically under heavy acceleration the driver side vibrates/ buzzes down by the floorboard. Now this only happen under heavy acceleration. I even did a test in 1st gear. Heavy accellerate under 2k RPM's, 3k RPM's, 4k RPM's and the vibration happened under these heavy acceleration periods. It's almost like there was also a loss of power during this vibration/ buzz, which leads me to believe it might be the clutch.
I took off the prop shaft and drove in FWD for a few weeks. The vibration was still prominent. Took of both front driveshafts and inspected those and they seem perfect but THE VIBRATION IS STILL HERE. Could this be the clutch?
Couple days ago I took out the factory air box and cut the bottom out. I also cleaned my K&N filter at the same time. I cut the whole bottom edge to edge up to about 2" from the flapper on the motor side of the box. Re-installed and everything is tight. I drove the car and noticed a LOUD or what I consider loud noise from about 3,000rpm to redline. I am thinking it could be just the additional air being sucked from the air box. However its much louder then I would expect from a CAI. Does a CAI make a loud difference? I noticed a increase in performance so I know its working. Also, it could be described a a light, smooth sounding exhaust leak. But I am susceptible since this problem was not their prior to the intake mod.

I think they're going to tell me I need new brakes and rotors (felt some pretty heavy vibration during braking in the Tennessee hills). I was thinking of changing the front brakes myself. My mechanical abilities are modest, but I've done the brakes on my 94 Ford Ranger before.

2005 2.OT ... Our car showed an engine light last night and when doing heavy acceleration, starts to pull or hesitate. Do not occurs when accelerating slowly, all day at dealer and they said that might be cam wear or some pressure pump. They are taking the engine covers to find out what is the issue. Cam repair and oil change. It drives smoother and no longer hard down shifting....
View 9 RepliesI have an '04 passat 2.8l with manual tranny. I have noticed on acceleration when it get to approx.2,200-2,300RPM. I can feel a vibration then it goes away around 2,500-2,600RPM. It does this in any gear and at any rate of acceleration. I have noticed that when I have the clutch engaged and rev the engine it is as smooth as can be at that RPM range. I'm thinking it has to be in the drivetrain and not the engine. Also, I have to replace the CV Axles, as they are popping. Could they possibly cause this odd vibration? My car has 96,000mi on it and is very clean and well taken care of.
View 6 RepliesRecent axle replacement and now I've noticed that there is some annoying vibration under hard acceleration and at speeds around 65+.
I just read that cheap replacement axles suck. However, I also read that the OEM are hollow and the cheapos are solid. Could only replacing one side cause there to be some sort of imbalance and cause the vibration?
I bought a B5.5 wagon with 145kmi on it last week. It's a 1.8t with a tiptronic transmission.
Last night, when I stepped on the accelerator for the first time when it downshifted I got a nasty vibration until I let off. When just cruising or accelerating at a normal speed there is no vibration at all. It doesn't matter if you're doing 20 mph or 60mph, it's the same vibration when you accelerate hard.
I'm thinking maybe a motor mount or something?
I have a 99 VW Passat with 2.8 V6, FWD, Automatic tranny and it currently has 94.5K miles. Under semi hard or hard acceleration from either a rolling or standing start, the car vibrates something terrible. Steering wheel has bad vibration and the whole car shakes. If you back off and accelerate very slowly its pretty smoother.
I have had the tires balanced 3 time but the last 2 times the dealer and Sears didn't even move the weights. When cruising at amy steady speed on the highway there is no vibration whatsoever. So I don't think tire balance is the problem. The dealer then put in two brand new half shafts but its no better. I asked them to check the motor mounts but they said they are fine.
I recently I had the cv boots replaced on my 2006 VW Passat 2.0. Since then the front vibrates upon acceleration. I have taken the car to a different mechanic than the one who did the cv boots and he says there may be a broken motor mount. I am skeptical about this diagnosis but now am completely stumped.
View 3 RepliesI have what feels like a rotational vibration (front to back) during mid to hard acceleration in 5th gear (60-65+mph) and its driving me crazy trying to figure this out. I can slightly feel it under hard acceleration in 3rd gear as well.
I have tried two different sets of wheels (both after market and stock) with no luck. I am starting to think it is in the motor and not the suspension... Or could it be the trans? What can I check/inspect to get how to tackle this?
Info on the car: 2003 Wagon 1.8T 5sp. 40k miles
Under heavy acceleration my car surges. I have already put a new stock diverter valve on and no change....I am thinking n75 is next on my shotgun list?
View 12 RepliesThis morning I just began noticing a low pitched whining sound when I accelerate at low speeds (below 30 mph). The sound seems to disappear at higher speeds for some reason. It bothered me so much that I arranged to have all the timing belt service done....I have been putting this off....84K miles now on a V6 Passat. I'm thinking it is the water pump noise, but I am not an expert on cars like most of you are. What all SHOULD be done when you change the timing belt?
View 4 RepliesI just went APR Stage 1+ (APR hpfp plus VWR intake) and am loving the noticeable power gain from Stage 1. But under hard acceleration I'm getting a strange noise (sounds like wheelspin or tire screech and sounds like it's coming from the front tires) when I disengage the clutch to shift at higher (5K+) rpms. It is not metallic sounding (it sounds like burning rubber) and lasts for a split second then goes away.
For those of you who've had tuned GTIs, it essentially sounds like what my Stage 1 GTI sounded like when too much torque was going to the front wheels and I spun my wheels before I got traction.
It doesn't happen as I re-engage the clutch and it doesn't happen any other time (quick but not WOT acceleration or normal driving). It also didn't happen under hard acceleration before I went from Stage 1 to Stage 1+. Furthermore, I'm not having any issues with difficulty shifting or engaging gears at any time. My R is 1 month old and has ~1K miles.
I've searched the clutch/transmission troubles thread, and other threads, but haven't come across other sounds/symptoms that seem similar.
At first I was thinking it was just a split second of wheelspin from too much torque as the AWD kicked in, but that doesn't seem to make sense (or does it?) since it only happens when I'm disengaging the clutch. Any thoughts before I start thinking the worst?
I have noticed since day 1 of owning my v8, that there i a horrible sound that comes from the exhaust upon medium to heavy acceleration - a loud fluttering is the best way i can describe it. I took it to the dealer and one tech said something was definitely wrong, the other went and got a new reg off the showroom floor and demonstrated that it is common and normal. Although another new reg did the same thing, i am not convinced that this obnoxious sound is normal ...
View 17 RepliesHere's the story on my truck. Spits and sputters between 40-60 during heavy acceleration and on rare occasions will jerk/pop while at a steady speed. No engine or wrench lights. I thought it might be the fuel filter and changed that, it didn't work. I also ran two bottles (on 2 separate occasions) of Duralube extreme fuel system cleaner, that didn't work either. So, I took it to the Ford dealer for a diagnostic. They had a hard time getting it to act up but said it finally misfired on #8 and recommended replacing the ignition coil and plug. I did that, still have the same symptoms. So, I thought it might be the fuel injector and changed that. Still same symptoms and ZERO dummy lights.
After several YouTube videos, I thought it might be the TPS and got one. Before I changed that however, I cleaned the Mass Air Flow sensor, still same symptoms. I finally changed the TPS, but the engine wouldn't start or run at all, no warning lights yet. When I put the old TPS on, it would run. I unplugged the TPS and it still ran but very rough. Now the engine light IS on! Thinking I purchased a bad part, I took it back to O'Reilly's and they warrantied it out and gave me a new one. I had 19 PO codes. I changed the TPS again, and, it won't start or run at all. Put the old one on and it runs. They cleared the codes and told me they think it could be the ECM/PCM.
Why will a new TPS not work? I still have the same issue of hesitation @ 40-60 during hard acceleration. No hesitation during a moderate acceleration.
I have a buddy who has an 01 B5 w/ 1.8t and 5 speed. He asked me to try and find out why it has been making a mysterious noise. I do all my own work, so I know a few things, but this noise has me stumped.
On startup, it will make an almost ratcheting kind of sound. Clattery, grumbly ratcheting sound... Goes away in a few seconds. It will also occasionally do this on acceleration.
Now, I am not hugely familiar with the 1.8t (in fact, my VW experience is largely a B4 TDI) so I'm not sure where to start.
One note though- I changed his oil for him, and the first startup right after the oil change the sound almost didn't happen at all. From then on resumed its obnoxious habit.
What this could be? Engine? Tranny? Something else? I didn't get a response over in the 1.8t area so I'm trying here.
Just recently his turbo has decided to contribute very little to power. You can hear it spool a little bit, but it's not what it used to be.
Just recently he had to have his intercooler replaced due to running over a semi tire. I have yet to pull his belly pan to look for loose fittings.
When I am accelerating heavy and then slow down as it is engine braking i get a strange vibration. It seems to come from the drive line i just looked over the car today there is nothing loose all suspension is tight drive shaft looks good and the rubber u joint looks good too. I noticed it after I put in the resonator delete but I didn't think that it could cause it.
View 2 RepliesI noticed it today when I first started driving to work. The sound would be best described as if you were missing a big chunk of rubber from your tire and you heard the 'thumping' as the tire rotated. It happens when I go into left turns mostly. Sometimes when I go into right turns. And only once when I was driving straight this morning when the car was first started. I am not certain where the vibration is coming from, but it feels like it is the rear of the vehicle somewhere. What this might be? (I checked the tires, no missing chunks )
