Passat (B6) :: Hum Noise Coming From All Four Tires
Apr 18, 2007
Just wanted to know if its common to see tires on a '06 B6 3.6L with stock 17" wheels, start to hum from scalloping after just 12,500 mi. They sound like a truck with super duty mud tires. These are the stock Michelin HR 17" that came mounted on the car at time of delivery. The car has been to its routine service intervals. No jack rabbiting. Just freeway driving. There's plenty of tread on them, and the noise seems to be coming from all four.

I am looking to reduce some road noise from the Tiguan and will probably install some Dynamat. Mostly I am looking to soften road noise coming from the tires. Any recommendations on what type and where the most beneficial spots to dynamat would be? There seems to be a lot of choices to choose from and every car seems to have it's weak spot as far as noise goes. Wheel wells and firewall, perhaps?

While driving down a multiple lane expressway I noticed a repetitive "whump, whump, whump, whump" that would speed up or slow down with the car. The car is a 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid "All Wheel Drive" with 80,000 miles on it. The tires, Cooper CTS 235 70 R15's, are pretty new, they were installed at 70,000 miles and have been rotated at 76,500. The noise is not very loud but noticeable by myself and passengers.
About 4 years ago one of the OEM Michelins developed an abnormal wear pattern that caused this noise. The vehicle had a 4 wheel alignment along with the rotation at 76,500. No reason to believe it was "knocked" out of alignment since then. Any thoughts as to what is causing this noise and what we should to to remedy it?

I have 2012 Tiguan, I just did a tire rotation as part of my 10k oil change. Afterward I started to hear a weird noise from front tires, especially when I was driving slow on smooth roads, I can hear tires make a noise every spin. The noise speed up with the tire speed. I do the oil change and tire rotation every 3k for my previous car, never had any problem.

Feel there is excessive road noise on the highway? (not wind noise)
Seems as though it can be worse depending on the surface. Comparing the B7 to the wife's Q5 is painful. Heck, even my MKVI GTI was silent compared to this. What do you all is a good fix?
Tires? If so, what would be a good upgrade? The P Zero Neros on the GTI seemed pretty good. I'm new to car tires. Long time Jeeper. Dynamite under all carpet?

My grandma had purchased an almost brand new B6 Passat with the 4-motion VR6 all leather interior with about 8k on the odometer. Recently she has had some problems with it and has asked me what is going on, My dad has an Audi Allroad, my mom has a 01 A4 event and I have a 04 GLI so we know some stuff about the cars but these problems are eluding me and I was going to look for some counseling. First, her front tires are making this horrible sound, she says it sounds like a Mack truck and it gets worse as you go faster. I'm thinking its the tires but why would it be like that only after 8k? The second problem is her transmission, she has had the transmission fail to engage into gear 3 times, where it takes about 2-10 seconds before it engages. Now the car has about 10k on it. [URL]....

IDK if it's just me but i feel like i keep hearing a rattling/rumbling type sound when driving on the highway. idk if it's coming from the tires, the rotors, or if the dealership put the tires on incorrectly today.

I have a scraping noise which sounds like it is coming from the front end but only around 10 to 20 mph. It can only be heard when driving down a quiet street, next to a building (mcdonald's drive through) or in my parking garage at work. Always makes the noise, it sounds like it something was scraping on one of the rotors.
Purchased car in August with 26,000 miles from a non VW dealer --- first mistake. Two days after signing papers showed signs of valve body issue. Took it to VW dealer near work and after two days they finally got OK to replace valve body and all is good. About 5K to 6K miles later started hearing the noise. At 36,000 the tranny started shifting hard and having problems up shifting occasionally, would rev up really high and then finally go into gear. Took 3 service visits for the same dealer to be able reproduce it and then they finally figure out they left out 2 liters (their calculation) of fluid when doing the valve body, so it got driven 10,000 miles while 2 liters low. They basically acted like they were doing me a favor by adding the fluid they left out in the first place and said only time will tell if there is any damage.
Took it back to the same dealer again for the scraping noise. Supposedly 3 people drove the car and never heard the noise. CEL came on yesterday and I decided to try a new dealer and have them look into the noise while it was there. Did a ride along with the service writer and tech. Writer is pretty sure he heard the noise and tech wants it back after the holidays to road test more and try driving in some quiet areas.
It has been determined that the car does not make the noise if there is no weight on the front end. I have jacked it up and spun the wheels and first dealer claims they had it on the lift in drive and could not hear. New dealer is thinking bearing noise that is only heard when bearing has weight on the front wheels or something to do with the CV axles or something in the tranny. If it is the tranny well we know who's fault that is.

At work we have a 04 Passat 4motion wagon that has a strange noise coming from behind the dash. The best way I can describe the noise is like computer hard drive loading. It happens continuously even when the radio/cd player is on.

I Have 17400 Miles on my Wagon and After Three Weeks in the Shop I am going to pick up my Car next Monday from the Dealer. I Did not have any Warnings Just Whistling Noise which was coming from under the hood. That was weary Loud Noise. I took my car to the dealer and they told it look like a bad Engine belt. After few days they told me my transmission is bad and needs to be Completely Replaced. I Read so many different stories on this Forum about Transmission Problems and i never had any problem till now.

Popping coming from their driver seat? It mostly "pops" when I apply the brakes coming to a full stop or sometimes after I stopped and accelerate, the seat back pops. It's intermittent and I'm afraid the dealership cannot replicate the problem when I take it in.

My car is making some noise. The first problem is describing the noise. I think of it as similar to the sound one can make with a moist finger rubbing along the top of a wine glass. A passenger last night thought it sounded like those gadgets you whirl above your head to make noise. I think the noise is coming from the rear brakes. The noise goes away if I apply the brakes. It also goes away if I apply the emergency brake.
It doesn't always make the noise, but it is happening often enough, and is loud enough, that I had to switch from the news to loud music on today's drive to work. I have enough pad left on the brakes, but I don't know about the e-brake. I was under the impression that there are tiny drum brakes that are used as a mechanical emergency brake on these cars? I've never peeked inside. I do have 118k miles on the car.
Maintenance history available at [URL] .... where you can see that the rear rotors were cut at 78k. However, I can feel a ridge on the rotor which I think is where the rotor is swept by the pad. I wonder if this ridge is somehow a problem, maybe rubbing against something else (which will doubtlessly turn out to be now damaged and expensive).

Got the car back from the wheel shop who installed coilovers and some rims on the car. Riding on 20x8.5 in front and 20x10 out back. Noise coming from the front passenger side.
There was a loose tie rod, tightened it up
Took out the wheel, checked the bolts.
Checked brakes (he painted the calipers for me)
Checked rotors etc
Only happens when I accelerate the car. Barely makes the noise in reverse.

2001.5 Passat 1.8t auto 98k.
It sounds as though I have a relay in the relay panel behind the headlight switch clicking on and off while I am driving. I searched the archives a bit and through my own reasoning, I figured it is not related to the hazard switch or turn signal stock ( I could be wrong though).
Description: It only clicks while I have my foot on the accelerator and the car is in motion, never other wise. It is not dependent on throttle location; it clicks the same way regardless of where the throttle is as long as it's being pressed. The clicking stops completely when the throttle is not being pressed.
Because of this, I am unable to locate the exact relay that is making the noise as it is impossible for me to open the door and look at the relay panel while driving. The clicking is some what erratic; It will click, pause for 2-4seconds click again then wait anywhere from 2 to 10 seconds and repeat. It's driving me nuts. Evap? Is this normal? Can it be stopped?

I hear clicking noise on my 2006 vw passat 2.0 T. The noise comes from the passenger side, sounds like it coming from under the glove department, but i cannot be exactly sure. It does clicking when i start the engine and after a minute it clicks .. ( about 5-6 clicks. not very loud but you can hear them. )
Also the clicking noise appears when I drive ... but it's hard to hear, and when i slow down or when i"m at the complete stop. It does not appears all the time, but randomly happens.

I have a 2014 VW Passat TSI 1.8, had it for about a year and have a little over 11k on it. Love the car, and have done a few mods to it. I am interested in replacing my standard rear view mirror with the auto dim. Is it even possible? I do not know if I have to plugs that I would correct my auto dim to because of my standard mirror. I do have the SOS as well, so I am not sure if that's all connected.
I also have a strange crackling noise that sounds like its coming from the upper trim of where the steering wheel is at. When I hols it down tight it seems to go away. It only happens when the car is warm.

I have an 01 passat 1.8 turbo, I have been having a loud rapping noise coming from the top of the engine. Started about 8 months ago when you turned on the engine and would immediately go away. Then it continued stopping at 500 rpms then at idle and now it continues up to 2000 rpm. I have spoken to the local vw dealer twice now, first they claimed it was the timing belt and tensioner, replaced it, still made the noise. Next was told that there are two screens that could be clogged, one in the oil pan, which is impossible to get at without pulling the engine, and the other screen was located under the valve cover, pulled it off and found no screen, called vw and was told no screen in my model.
I noticed a chain in the inside end of the valves, when the engine runs it is loud and comes from the area of theat chain, the chain appears in fine shape, tight, there is no signs of metal shavings or anywhere that parts may be hitting. The valves were all is good shape. The car runs fine and the gas mileage has not been effected at all. No oil leaks or idiot lights coming on. The car sounds like a diesel on alot of steroids. It is so loud and i fear something is going to blow on it.

What is causing the noise coming from the front end of my 2000 VW Passat B5 1.8T (73000 miles). When I'm going slowly and turn the wheel all the way to the left, I get a loud, low pitched groaning/moaning sound coming from the drivers side of the front end of the car. This occurs especially when turning at low speeds, such as entering or exiting a parking space, and it also seems like it happens a lot when I'm backing out of a parking space (although it may just be that I notice it more then). It also seems worse when the car has been sitting still for a while. I do not hear such a noise when I am going faster (like turning left). I also don't believe I've ever heard a "knocking" sound in conjunction with this problem.
Could you describe the differences between control arms, tie-rod ends, and maybe explain how the sounds might vary between these two problems? What else could it be?
How could I diagnose this myself? What should I look for? I took it in to my local dealership and they said that they could not reproduce the noise. This is total BS, because it makes the noises ALL THE TIME! They refilled my power steering fluid, but this made absolutely no difference.
