Passat (B6) :: Getting Humming Noise At 55 Plus Mph?
Jun 27, 2008
I just started getting a humming sound at 55+ mph coming from the front left side of the car. the pitch of the hum changes with the speed of the car and goes away as you slow down. i can't hear anything when i roll the window down because of the wind.
i plan to let it get worse until i take it to the dealer. they do not fix anything unsell it is totally broken.

My car (5spd b5) developed front humming noise. I have changed bearings, axles, and tires and it didn't work. I also checked the transmission oil level today and its normal and clean. The noise is not engine related and it depends on the speed only! starts at about 15mph and it gets worse as I go faster. At 60mph the noise is annoying. As the car becomes lighter going over a crest, the noise disappears and comes right back when weight is back on the wheels and suspension. All new front-end suspension, tires, bearings and axles and nothing seems to improve this.

B6 manual, after 20k miles with Dunlop Sport Maxx 235-40-18 tires (still pleny of tread left, even on fronts) a moderately loud humming noise has developed, loudest at 35 mph but even heard at 10mph, with an irritating resonance of subwoofer-type. Noise changes somewhat with road surface, but not much. Not related to engine speed, gearbox, or radio. My next step will be to swap wheels.
For now, any thoughts as to the cause?

I have a 06 passat v6 with 34,5000 miles and with extended warranty, the car consumes about 14 mpg city and I noticed a humming noise coming from the back seat or bellow the trunk I am positive is the fuel pump, I will like to know if my poor mileage is related to the humming noise or should I take it to the dealer to have replace under warranty...

I picked up a 2012 2.5L SE w/ Sunroof and Nav over the Christmas holiday.
I have been driving back and forth between Dallas and Kansas for work and I've notice an "odd" noise at highway speeds. When I have the cruise control set for the upper 70's and the car is in 6th, I can hear, for lack of a better word, a hum from the rear of the car. If I switch the Tiptronic down to 5th the hum goes away. As soon as I shift back to 6th, it returns.

Two things I have just noticed on my '09 with aprox. 120,000 miles.
Starting at about 45 mph, I am getting a humming noise
Doesn't get louder as speed goes up either, stays the same 45-75 mph
Have Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 tires, did rotation, noise did not change location
Noise does go away gradually when slowing down to a stop (after I have reached 45)
I am deaf on my left side, this is hard to tell where it is coming from
Second is this really odd brake pedal clink / pop noise. When brake pedal is depressed fully to the floor, car ON or OFF, there is a clunk
See attached links to the noise.....
Brake pads / rotors are like new, plenty of life on them. I did have the inverter pump replaced per the recall (I read somewhere this could be related?)

brought my treg in for my 5k service and also got the AC humming noise fixed. not sure if everyone has the same symptoms. but for me, the humming usually starts when the AC is over 70 degrees and you hear a humming noise that sounds like it's from the left side of the dash.
turns out that it's the vibration of the secondary water heater (located on the front left fender) that's causing all the funky "humming" noise. tech fixed it by modifying and moving the bracket for the water heater to prevent further vibration. so far i haven't heard any humming noise. and I hope that's the solution for it.

Just picked up my car from the shop last night. Had a full tune up, air filter replaced, radiator upper hose replaced (was leaking), transmission service and an oil change. When I picked up the car at night I heard that it sounded a little off when starting but I was so excited to have it back that I drove it home. Once I was on the freeway, no weird noises and it drove perfectly fine. This morning when I started it up again the sound was there again. I can only explain it as a sort of high pitched humming. I pulled away from the curb and it made more noise - I heard that sound once when I needed power steering fluid. I put the car in park and popped the hood. Power steering fluid was full. My mom suggested I restart the car so she could hear the sound. This time when I started the car it sounded fine. Typical.
I drove it to work and it drove fine and never made that noise again.
(car is a VW Passat 01')

II had the vibration/hum for the first time when you reach 70mph and I need to know if it is safe to drive for about a week. I have looked but can't seem to find the answer.

So I recently bought a 2004 R32 after owning like 5 other vw's (always wishing they were R's). Anyway, I am experiencing some humming noise... not quite a vibration, but the "humming" is strong enough that you can sort of feel it through the car. The "humming" happens at a range from about 30-60 mph and is only present when I'm turning left, or when there is more force on the passenger side of the car. When I'm going straight, it is very slight, but if I turn even slightly to my left it gets louder/stronger. When turning right and force is off the passenger side and on the driver side, the symptom is not present. It seems like it's coming from my front end as well, not rear.

I have had my 2013 Prius v for one month. I will occasionally go into my garage and the car will be making noise that sounds like humming.

I recently hit a pothole and damaged one of my custom wheels to the point it was dangerous to drive on, I could not find a matching wheel for the car (2007 Chevy HHR) and had to drive on the donut spare for about three days, I put the spare on the rear passenger side, So for about three days I was driving with an 18" rim on one side and a donut spare on the other. I noticed a humming sound when I get to 40 mph. I thought it was just the sound of the tread on the spare, But I have since bought new rims and tires and the humming sound is still there. Again, I only hear it when I get to about 40 MPH, below that, no sound at all. The car seems to shift smoothly. Could driving on two different tires on the rear end have screwed up my differential?

My Ex just started making this humming noise between 45 - 55 MPH -- beyond 55 MPH and the noise is gone. The humming noise comes and goes about every second and disappear if I get off the gas. I'm having difficulty determining where the noise is coming from. Seems like is coming from the front end area or under the hood. Not really sure.
What could be causing this? For what its worth, my tires were recently rotated and balanced. No vibration on the steering wheel and truck drives straight.

My wife heard a humming noise on a 200 mile trip to Long Island last week. It was loud enough that she was concerned about it and took it into a Toyota dealership to have it checked out. Of course, the noise went away, and they assured her that the car was perfect!
When she came home, I drove the car and the noise came back. Radio was off and the frequency of the noise changed with the AC/heater blower speed. Turn blower (fan) off, and the noise completely disappears. Before I got home, noise disappeared again with the fan on. I believe it is a bad bearing in the blower motor.

So I went into my garage last night to shut the door. I heard a slight buzzing/humming noise coming from the car. I narrowed the noise to under the truck of the vehicle. It sounded like a fuel pump was running. I don't know when it started, but it was about 5 hours after the car was driven last. After a little research, I found this in the manual page 8:
"Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel evaporation leakage check and it does not indicate a malfunction."
I started my car and it stopped after that. Could this be The case of why some people have dead batteries on the 2014? Maybe this runs to frequently or stays on too long?

My 2007 Prius Hybrid (92k miles) has developed a loud humming noise. It seems to be coming from in front of the driver side under the hood.
The hum begins at less than 20 mph and changes "pitch" with speed. It sounds like a tire with low air (not the problem). It also changes when the car is turned from side to side. No change in performance or MPG otherwise.
Wheel bearing is what most are saying along with a fluid situation with the transaxle.

My new prius c two has been parked in the garage for 4 hours since getting home from work. I walked out a minute ago to take out the trash and it was making a humming noise, like electric humming.

I loved my 2009 Prius until this weekend. I just turned over 31,000 miles and now a loud humming noise has developed under the hood while driving. It has not been cold here and this doesn't start until I reach around 24 mph. It remains while the gas engine is running or I'm coasting with the engine off. The humming is there in D or in N and there no sound while turning. When I am under 24 mph the noise is gone. I have set up an appointment with my Toyota dealer for this week, but wanted to know ahead of time if any other Prius owners have had this issue.

I have a 2000 Olds Alero 3.4L. The car has been making a "humming" noise near the front end. It sounds a lot like the noise you hear when driving on rough road. It happens no matter what gear the automatic transmission is in. It changes sound with speed (most prevalent at 40 MPH). The sound also changes when I turn the wheel - it is worse when I turn left going down the highway and the noise is less when I turn right. I have replaced the driver side wheel bearing, the drivers side dive axel (I noticed the CV boot was leaking), none of this worked. It sounds like it is on the drivers side so I have not messed with the passenger side. (CV joints look fine on the passenger side). I put the car on a lift and ran through the gears - there is a vibration (car shakes) as the tires speed up - but I can't tell if it is a tire or something else. I need to know what this might be - transmission? -Tire? -Passenger Hub?

So far I've been through 1 set of tires (after 12,000 miles), stepper motor, new cd changer, trouble with TPMS system and more Now that my stepper motor is replaced (dealer said he wasn't aware of any widespread trouble with this part, what a joke) I hear a humming noise, constant from rear axle area, drowned out by engine while driving. Noise sounds like a fan spinning or electronic interference you might get if your cell phone is close to a computer or tv with volume off. I don't recall this noise previously although I rarely drive this car it's my wife's.

I have a humming noise coming from the front end of my 2004 W12. I only notice the noise at highway speeds and it appears to only be audible when I turn the wheel to the right. For example, when traveling on the highway and the road bends slightly to the right or when I move into the right lane, I hear a faint hum coming from the wheel(s).
I started hearing the hum a few days ago but dismissed it as a symptom of my Phaeton Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (POCD). While driving to and from DC last night on a night out with my wife, she commented on the presence of the hum as well.
I just had the LF wheel bearing replaced 2 weeks ago. Here are some possibilities I'v thought of:
RF wheel bearing
Low Power Steering Fuild
Other Steering Problems (leaking rack)
On a related note, where do you check the power steering fluid level? I can't seem to find the reservoir.
