I did F&R brakes (Adam's rotors and hawk & akebono ceramic pads) on my B6 4mo about a month ago. Ever since changing the brakes, there is a clunking noise, when going over bumps, coming from the right side, possible right front. The sound consistently goes away when I press on the brakes. It's a metal on metal clunk that you can feel and hear. Not terribly loud, but pretty annoying. What could be the cause?
View 2 RepliesI got a few questions. First one is how hard would it be to swap the auto trans out for a manual and what would I need. Secondly, have some weird boost issue, boost gauge use to read 5 psi with front mount now its at 2 psi and their are no leaks in the IC system.. can't figure out what it is (turbo only has 3k miles on it) final question what causes a clunking noise every time i go over bumps and curbs?
View 4 RepliesMy 06 2.0t has 73k on it. but i noticed at around 60k that when I brake, almost to the point where I'm stopping (like at a light) the car jerks or grabs...kinda like the tranny is catching or the brakes are grabbing. Twice I've asked vw to check and twice they've said they can't find anything wrong.
Warranty runs out at 75k, so I think I'm going to take it to AAMCO to have them check the tranny and see what they say.
Every time I brake I hear a clunking noise, it happens right before I stop completely. For some reason it does not make the noise when it has recently rained or the car is wet, the noise is coming from the front drivers side. I had a mechanic check out my suspension, and he said everything was fine. I am thinking it could be a bushing, but am not sure.
View 10 RepliesAlright I've got an 09 camry le on 18's, I recently just put the tein s tech springs on and since day one it clunks when I hit bumps. I did the install myself (not bad, just time consuming), so no taking it back to someone. I've taken the wheels off and made sure the bolts are all tight and the top mount too. Everything is snug. Still clunks. Is this just something that is normal with aftermarket springs on stock suspension?
View 14 RepliesI am losing my mind over this. I bought a 2013 c63 in May and the last few months it has been making this clunking noise. I have taken it to the dealership 3 times so far and each time the noise goes away for about a week only to return worse than it was. It used to only make noises when I turned right on incline changes at low speeds. Now it makes the noise going over any bump at any speed.
The first time I took it in they replaced the front left strut. The second time they replaced the front right strut. The third time they replaced the lower control arm.
I am posting 2 videos of the noise. This video is between the first and second visits and the noise can be heard around the 24 second mark.

Aside from the clutch and gear changing noise, recently I've been noticing something that sounds almost like a rattle when going over bumps, say a series of filled potholes on a highway where they just slightly bump to move your wheel around, it's not that deep thumping you would expect to hear but it sounds like something is loose in terms of the suspension.
Happens on the front and seems like its coming from both sides. To me it sort of sounds like they forgot to tighten something up when they removed the shipping "blocks"/spacers, but I am not exactly sure what to check. I really do not want to visit the dealership at only 600 miles on the clock ...
Have a 2011 SE with just over 21k miles on it.
Problem #1: When ever I go over bumps, go down my drive way, I hear this rather loud noise coming from either the roof or right rear. It sounds like someone is hitting metal with a hammer.
It happens when I'm turning the wheel or just driving straight.
Problem #2: Also when I am going over a speed bump, when the rear of the car goes over it, the suspension gets squeaky. Speeds are about 2-3 mph~
Unfortunately, it is no longer under factory warranty so taking it to the dealer is my last option.
Got a 97 Sedan with 207k+ on it. Just did all struts (monroe quick-strut), brake pads, shoes, drums, rotors, calipers, rear and front sway bar endlinks, and lower ball joints. All hardware is tight and secured.
I am getting a clunk when I go over some bumps, but not all of them. I also find that it will clunk when I try to accelerate while turning out onto, say, a main road or something where I need to pick up speed. At times it sounds like it's coming from the passenger and others it sound like the middle or driver side.
Control arm bushings don't look too bad and would probably cause more noise when accelerating and braking. Both wheels are snug and don't move when tugging on them in the air. There is no play in the steering as well.
I have a clunking noise from the right front suspension when going over bumps. I've replaced the Strut bushings that were collapsed, the control arm bushings that had play and the noise is still there. There is no play in the links. There is a slight noise in the sway bar bushings when struck with a rubber mallet. I hate to keep replacing parts chasing down this noise.

I've just installed new shocks on my 1997 Suburban K1500 4WD. Now there's a knock that appears to come from the driver's side. The knock seems to be as the wheels descend while crossing rolling bumps rather than abrupt jolts; for example; pot holes or running over reflectors embedded in the road don't cause the knocking.
Here's what I've checked: balljoints, inner and outer tie rods, idler arms are OK; brake calipers secure; 4WD is fine; steering shaft is OK (don't feel the knock in steering wheel); can't find anything loose.
Clunk in the front end when going over speed bumps? That is the only time I ever get it, never on bumpy roads or anything like that just at speed bumps. It seems to be louder on the drivers side but I am pretty sure its on both sides. I never noticed it until a couple speed bumps were installed along my normal route, but that could be because maybe I never drove over them previously?
View 3 RepliesThere is a clunking noise coming from the rear of the car. Not a metal on metal sound. Sounds like its more on the passengers side. I replaced the swaybar linkage ends since they were a little loose and thought it was that. Nope...I have H&R coilovers, they are about 5 years old. Can't imagine they be shot this soon. Had someone drive my car while i was behind the R and the rear wheels aren't dancing at all, a common sign of a blown shock. Push down on the car, shocks still respond like they did from day one. I've put the car up on a lift, both sitting and wheels dangling. With the wheels dangling, I grabbed onto the shocks to see if there was any play in the upper shock mounts, solid. Looked under the whole car for loose plastic covers. Can not see anything loose. I made sure everything inside the hatch, including the battery is sitting snug.
The clunk happens over bumps, with or without the brakes on and is loud enough that if the radio is on, it can still be heard.
So I was driving home from work today and picked my daughter up from the sitters. When I got back in the car I noticed a "clunking" noise when I would hit small bumps. Trying to figure it out, I also noticed this occur when driving straight and moving the steering wheel back and forth.
The car is a 2012 SE v6 with about 26k on it.
I did install eibach springs about a month ago, but have not had any issues until now. I took both front wheels off and checked anything I would have changed when installing the slings and everything seems okay.
I am experiencing a bad clunking noise when going over bumps. Its comming from the passenger rear and I am assuming the springs collapsed. How can i tell for sure? The car is sitting a little lower on the corner. Is it bad to drive the car with the spring in this condition?
View 8 RepliesSo about a month ago my 2013 Sonata GLS started to make some clunking noise going over the littlest bumps over the road from the front end on both right and left side.
I brought it to one mechanic and they said the rack and pinion needs replacing which is an expensive fix. I couldn't believe that was the problem as I had no leaks and it was on their solid. I ended up taking it to my uncles mechanic and he stated its the stabilizer links on the front right and front left wheels. My way to work has a lot of bad pot holes... so I'm hoping that the stabilizers are actually the problem.
Anyways, tomorrow I will be bringing it to the mechanic to have them both changed. I know a lot have been complaining about this issue and instead of replacing the rack and pinion, I thought I'd try and see if it actually is the stabilizer links and provide a fix for some of the sonata owners on here.
I can't find the obd port on my new 2007 SF. Also there is a clunking coming from the front suspension when i go over bumps, what is the most common cause of this?
View 13 RepliesSo i just had installed a brand new set of bilsetin pss9. Going over bumps or pot holes at a slow speed, i get loud clunking out the back. Did not have this prior to the coilovers. Its dropped almost 3/4 of the thread. What this is? Also the shop that installed them, had put them in with out the rear upper spring plate, is that a standard install on these?
View 1 RepliesI had to raise the car a bit to clear the apr turbo outlet pipe. Raised a little too much and was hearing a clunking sound pulling into my driveway or speedbumps, etc. Contacted HR and they said the coilovers have an operating range and to lower them a bit. So.. i have about 3/8" of thread left on both fronts and my (not so scientific measuring method) fender/ground is 24" vs 26.25 stock as measured on a stock gti on my dealer lot. I still have a ton of thread to drop the car (about 1.5") as seen in the picture below. The issue i have is what the spring looks like. It rides fine in my day to day commute so its not noticeable but looking at it, it looks collapsed??
View 13 RepliesI've got a '94 Mazda miata which is in good shape, with among other things a fair number of suspension upgrades. It drives really well, other than the clunk. On the occasional bump it clunks as if something is loose on the driver's side rear. I've checked the shocks, springs, jacked it up and inspected everything I can think of. I'm looking for wisdom from your decades of experience (in your terms wasted time) on what it might be.
