Passat (B6) :: Clunk Noise Randomly While Driving
Oct 2, 2010
So as of lately i have noticed what i call a "clunking" noise. It seems to be coming from below the car and i cant tell whether its in the front or the rear, but the best way i can describe it is it sounds like when the Original ABS came out. For example on the first gen ABS you used to have to "reset" it after a hard braking. to reset this you had to put the car into reverse and push the gas and then hit the brakes as to flip some kind of switch cause then you would hear that CLUNK noise.
So to the point I am noticing this noise randomly while i am driving the car and the brakes and calipers are wearing fine and have plenty of pad and rotor left. I have no engine codes on the display and when i run vagcom i get no DTC's. I have cleared out my trunk thinking something in the trunk is bumping around and that didn't solve it. Could it be motor mounts? Downpipe? Worn rubber exhaust mounts? Tranny?

Car feels and responds great, no damage outside and nothing dragging. i really am at a loss.

Just today, driving around, and the car makes a clunk when braking. Not when you first start braking, but when it's about to come to a stop. It doesn't do it any other way. Not in reverse, or high-speed panic stops.
The hardest thing is it doesn't happen all the time. I've tried checking for CV clicking, control arms, ball joints, tie rods, all bushings around, motor mounts, you name it. Everything is tight and good.
I've read about some VW's having door pin issues causing the clunk, but it sounds like it comes from the dead center of the car, like right under the e-brake, but I could be wrong.

It seems the car has developed a loud "clunk sound" during some "spirited" driving. It is also felt near my left foot when this happens. It will happen, lets say, once during a right turn. Then, if a left turn is soon followed in the same "spirited" manner, another clunk will happen. There may be a less loud clunk once in a while during a quick take-off from a light. Is something shifting around? Is this cause for immediate action or can I wait until my 10k service in about a month?

Alright so this has happened a couple times I don't know what to do and what its from ... My car will randomly turn off while driving! it will beep 3 times and turn off all the dash lights come on and it turns off! and if the radio is on it will turn on it off over and over... But if I turn the key to off and turn it back on it will start right up... What could be causing this problem ?

I have a 2007 volvo S40 T5 AWD with 25,000 miles. When driving at slower speeds and I let off the gas, I hear a "clunking" noise similar to driving over a lose manhole cover. The car makes a very slight jerk as well. I notice this as well between 2nd and 3rd gear, but not just then. I am thinking transmission problem, but don't know and want some info before heading to the dealer.

I'm getting a "thunk" or "clunk" noise when driving over bumps/patched/uneven roads in my Elantra GT.
It's a hollow noise, I don't hear it unless I hit a bump/patch in the road. Doesn't have to be a large bump.
25k miles, Automatic Transmission. it almost seems to be one side (right) more than the other.
Is this a common issue for this model/year? What was the cause?

I have a 2000 Passat GLX 2.8 V6 w/ trip that makes a "clunk" noise just upon acceleration. I did a search for this and it seems like this has been asked before about the 4 motion cars but never on a non 4 motion car. It only happens when I hit the gas...

I've been hearing a slight clunk when accelerating from a stop, a very faint split second clunk between in 1st year.
Last week, I pointed the noise to a technician at my dealer and he diagnosed it as the cam adjuster lurching backward as the car moves forward.
He replaced the cam adjuster and the gasket set (058-109-088-E, 058-198-217, and 058-198-025-A). When I got the car back, it seemed like he had fixed the problem. However a week later, the noise is back.

I have a 2013 tdi. 40k miles. For the past few weeks iv been hearing a noise from the front. On small bumps or potholes or just going over a bumpy road its. Its like a rattle clunky sound. Going in my driveway I hear it too. I also noticed there is a squeak when i hit a medium to bigger hole. This is really annoying because this car is fairly new. Is the dealer gonna cover it if there is anything wrong?

I have an early production 2008 2.0T 6MT. The car has just over 2000 miles on the clock. I noticed that early in the morning, when it's cold, pulling out of my driveway, I hear a clunk from the front end. It doesn't always happen. Also, on the highway, the car feels like it wanders left and right, certainly more than my old B5.5 did, and in general it pulls to the left and the steering wheel sits slightly to the right. I found the following TSB on this site: [URL] .... My question is, this TSB doesn't mention anywhere that an alignment should be performed as part of the service. Should that be done? I'm going to take it to the dealer tomorrow.

I have started hearing a noise with my brakes. First thing in the morning when I back up and apply the brakes, I get a clunk or pop noise from the left front wheel. It will pop again once I move forward and hit the brakes. It only does the noise one time when I first apply the brakes in either direction. Once the brakes have been used out on the road and are warm, there is no noise when changing directions. I've had this noise in another car I used to have and it was caused by the aftermarket brake pads not being exactly large enough and there was slight pad shifting in the caliper. Being this is a new car and has the OEM pads, I would hope there would be no pad shifting or movement in the calipers.

I hear that noise from back.."click".."click".... a metal sound click noise intermittently/ randomly from rear. I took it to the dealer and the work order said "noise suppression ordered" but then i went for the servicing over the weekend and the customer service was saying "the technician has to talk to the part manager to see when the part will arrive, could take a month since this is not a genuine VW part".. What a noise suppression is? that could mitagate/reduce or eliminate this weird clicking noise coming from rear randomly?

I've noticed a few times now on my wife's car when I am driving it around 80 mph there is a some-time flapping or low-thumping noise from underneath the car. It only happens up around 80 mph. My wife says it's a feature to let me know to slow down . I originally thought maybe I had a plastic bag trapped under the car or some loose trim but looking underneath hasn't turned up anything. The only other thing I can think of is maybe it's just a strange aerodynamic quirk of the car that causes the noise.

Mostly when I am driving slow, like pulling out of my driveway, i notice this creak type noise coming from the front left part of the car.. Mainly when the wheel is turning and I am straightening the car out in the road from reverse.. I'll also hear it when i pull up to a stop sign and am making a right or left hand turn, but the more i turn the wheel and accelerate, the less i hear it, and vice versa.. Axle problem?

Relay making noise while driving... I know it could be a bunch of different relays.

I am getting a loud ticking noise after driving my vehicle for a bit. The dealership says its age of vehicle but i don't agree with that.

Yesterday I was on the highway - dry surface, a little bit of wind, but not much. While driving I kept feeling *kind of* like the Tiguan was getting pushed around by the wind, but not really. I looked at the trees, at the other cars and trucks on the road and none of them seemed to be moving around like me.
It was "kind of" like getting pushed by the wind - but actually more like the car was "crabbing" ... like the wheels were not spinning at the same speed. Very similar to the way it feels on snow/slippery conditions when traction control kicks in and straigtens out the Tiguan. It was like the front was fighting the rear and the car was twisting.
I chalked it up to being windy, although I've been in the Tiguan before in windy conditions and this was not the same.
Then today, I was leaving Home Depot. I closed the door, started the Tiguan, foot on brake and put the car in drive. Then immediately I had 4 tap-tap-tap-tap. Very much like if someone was pulling into the spot behind me and tapped me with their bumper.
I spun around in the seat and no one was in the car behind me, plus I have the trailer hitch in, so it would be a different feeling.
hhmmm ... very odd. I put the car back in park, back to drive and no tap.
Now I am curious. I turn the car off, wait a second, start the car again, back to drive, and sure enough another tap.
This is not the engagement of the transmission, this is a harder tap that happens after the transmission engages.
Tried it another couple of times and can replicate it.
I have to drive by the exit where my VW dealer is to get back home, so I stop by *HOPING* that I could replicate it again to the service manager, and sure enough - close the door, start the Tiguan, foot on brake and put the car in drive. Transmission engages, then immediately tap-tap-tap-tap
"hhmm that's not right he says". It was too late to get it into the shop tonight, but I left it overnight. Given my odd driving experience yesterday and the tap-tap-tap today, he was not sure if it was a safety issue with continuing to drive it.
This is a 2012 Tiguan SE 4 motion

I've been hearing this light "slapping" noise coming from under the hood. I think I localized it to the air filter area, but not exactly. The engine and everything seem to be functioning perfectly minus this noise when driving. Could it be the plastic covers?

So I traded in my '03 Passat for my '07, which I love, but i have the following observation:
When I drive with the driver's window down, at almost any speed really, the wind in my face is almost unbearable as it nearly blinds me. I never had this experience in my B5 and I have the seat in essentially the same position.
Is this a simple product of the newly engineered shape of the car? It really diminishes the joy of the experience.

I got this car off of a friend of mine who drove it drunk until the noise from the back wheel was too loud to handle. about 30 miles. he changed the "wheel" put on the spare and drove it for about another month.
during that time, the shifting began to get a little "iffy". he then brought it in to get the brakes done, and as soon as it came off of the lift . it wouldn't go into gear. instead it just makes a horrible noise from the area of the "output shaft" or where i would assume the prop shaft " flange" would be.
that being said. Every once in a while you can get it to go into gear. just by continually putting it from park to drive. and when it goes into gear the noise stops and it drives "fine" but only for about 30 seconds. and then it pops back "out of gear" and makes the noise again.

I have a whistle noise which I can hear since a month, it comes only when : - I drove more than 20 miles ( related to warming up of a piece of the car ? ) - I drive at least at 30 mph - Same noise If I switch to "neutral" position - Same noise if I'm braking or not, just related to the current speed - The noise is coming from the outside, but the high pitch makes it hard to locate...
