About twice a year I am noting a too soon change of gears on automatic mode. This may be the fourth time it happens is just coming and going by itself.
I notice that when driving on constant traffic and going about 40mph I'm doing 5th gear so when traffic clears up I have to really step on the gas so car downgrades to catch up with traffic. What may be happening?
A few days ago when it was real cold my car would not shift into any gears. I shut it off and started it in neutral and was able to get it to shift, but after leaving it for a day or two it now will not go into gear. I have tried starting it in neutral and park, but it still will not let me push in the little thing to allow me to shift into reverse or drive. Why this might be happening or had this happen to them?? I'm thinking it might be related to the really cold weather. It's a 97 passat...Automatic....
View 1 RepliesYesterday I had my first test drive of the 2012 2.5L gas Passat SEL automatic. It seemed there was often a little "stumble" as the car accelerated from rest. Is this normal or just an issue with this particular car ?
The only other annoyance I noticed was the rapid up-shifting through the gears past 30 mph. I guess it's set up this way for economy reasons, but acceleration seems to hit a wall when this occurs, then I have to apply more pressure on the go pedal. The salesman was one week on the job and knew far less about the car than I did.
I was wondering if it would be just a plug and play to exchange manual a/c controls to automatic climate control thingie. Id expect CAN coding but im just wondering if i could just bolt on and code or is there way much more to it like additional control module and what not .... maybe even not possible at all.
View 2 RepliesI drive a 1998 B5 1.8T passat. This happens when i go up a hill, i mean i can go up the hill fine but then when I go straight my rpms go crazy before changing gears, idk if this is normal but I doubt it.
View 9 RepliesI have a BMW 523i SE AUTO (1997) 2494 Petrol. In auto transmission the gears will shift from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd but won't shift any higher. In steptronic/manual transmission the gears will shift from 1st to 5th without any problems therefore suggesting that the problem isn't the gearbox itself. Only very occasionally does the shift electronics telltale light appear on the dash, yet the problem with the auto transmission is continuous. A local garage specializing in automatics suggested that it was the gearbox inhibitor. I've today had this changed but the problem still exists.
View 5 RepliesI just bought a 1993 Plymouth Voyager recently and the transmission is making a sort of howling sound in low and second gears. It seems to be shifting fine and the sound stops once you get going but I am concerned because the sound is slowly increasing. The fluid looks real old but is stillfairly red. A little bit darker than what it should be with a little bit of brown, but not super bad. I am wondering if maybe someone put in the wrong kind of fluid or maybe the filter is old or clogged, is the pumps system wearing out or bad bearings or what. I know that I need to change the fluid and clean or replace the filter but am I probably looking at something significantly hard to fix or expensive. I can get a free diagnosis at a shop, but I am looking to try and get this fixed myself if possible as I am fairly mechanically inclined and have lots of free time. I am just wondering if changing the fluid and filter will make much of a difference in the life of this transmission. So what is making this sound and is it something not too complicated that can be fixed without a major effort. Is there something fairly easy and cheap to do besides the fluid or do I just drive it.
View 7 RepliesI have an early model year 2004 Touareg which has lately developed what appears to be a slipping problem when changing gears from 5th to 4th when decelerating or the same when accelerating strongly and downshifting. When switching over to tiptronic mode, its not clear if that apparent slipping goes away or changes. It definitely isn't as severe but that could be due to perception or the RPMs where the shifting is occurring.
The only real interesting characteristic of this clunk and lurch that is experienced is that it only happens when the car is warm -- I've been watching the transmission oil temperature, and it appears to start happening as it passes through 200 degrees. When it starts, the lurch/clunk is small and not too bad. As the car reaches temperature, it reaches if full lurch/clunk potential.
I have taken it to the dealer once and they have "upgraded software" that was supposed to clear up the problem, but did not.
I am trying to change the automatic door lock setting to unlock the doors when I open the drivers side door not when I shift into park. The manual is vague and I am not having any success at all.

I had an independent automatic transmission technician test drive my Camry, and he said my transmission had "light throttle 2-3 slide." He also noted a high frequency clicking sound in the vicinity of the transmission while the engine was running, which he said may be a malfunctioning solenoid.
View 5 RepliesI bought the car about a week ago, whenever the auto tranny shifts gears there is a slight jerk that old honda autos are known for, my wife's car is a 01 celica gt which I bought 2 months ago and went through castrol import ATF 3x drain n refill method suggested by honda for their auto trany, I attempted the same thing in the gts and the shift jerk went down a little but not by much, the gt auto tranny is so smooth I can't even tell whenever it shifts up or down other then high rpm engine noise when it gets there. Is it the engine being much more powerful then the gt to cause that jerk? Should I try a different fluid? Need to know if theirs is smooth across all gears in any rpm range.
View 4 RepliesI'm having trouble with the automatic transmission in my 04' Elantra, it acted like the speed sensor was failing, but later the same day it lost all gears, forward and reverse. after turning the car off and sitting a while I started it back up and had gears again, but the trany is making noise. Fluid level is ok.
View 3 RepliesI don't like the way my transmission switches gears, is it possible to make the car change gears with 0.5 revs more then what it is right now... I feel like Hyundai only considered gas mileage for this car and didn't even think about the stress on transmission and engine...
I want the car to switch gears on higher revs then it is right now..

I have a '99 Toyota Camry automatic transmission with about 184k on it. I bought it used last summer.I noticed that when I speed up, it is sometimes slow to switch gears. I have to ease off the gas before it changes gears. This also happens when I go from reverse to drive. I experience it more noticeably when I haven't been driving the car for long or on a cold morning. I haven't brought it in yet...
View 6 RepliesI just bought a used automatic MM with 137k miles. Engine and interior super clean. I did test drive and it seemed to pull back a bit and rev harder when I was starting out from a stop or in intermittent traffic where I was slowing down and speeding up with flow of traffic. It also does it worse on hills. The guy from the car lot said it was the way I was driving the car...hmmmm...I'm not a lead foot. I let the car ease into higher speeds, I don't punch it. Ever.
Yesterday I took a longer drive and had other people in the car with me who also noticed the rough transitions between low gears and asked if that was "normal." NOT being a car mechanic I get alarmed when others are pointing something I too thought could be at issue. I bought the car "as is" after doing some online research and finding out that these car's even at this age get 4.5 to 5 star ratings from people who have them.
I took it to Auto Zone and they put the little code reader on the car but no codes came up. His suggestion was to have all the fluids changed in case someone put the wrong weight of transmission fluid in the car. I did check the fluid at the car lot and it was bright pink and at correct levels. Not sure that's what it is. He also suggested the possibility of it being a "shift cellinoid"?
I don't know what that is but he said it shouldn't be expensive to fix. He also suggested getting the transmission serviced to see if that might solve it. Someone else suggested "clean the IAC hole and throttle plate with choke cleaner..." don't know what that is? Someone else said to consider a vacuum leak in the fresh air tube between the air filter box and the throttle body...these are all just guesses.
I recently bought a decent looking 1999 f250 4x4 5.4 auto. It has no forward gears and will only move in reverse. I topped off the fluids and have found no leaks so far the cooler lines are crusty but dry. I am gonna need to swap this thing out or do some more trouble shooting if there may be a non rebuild issue to solve.
View 4 RepliesI have a squeak when I change gears, especially from 1st to 2nd. I have a twm short shifter with bronze cable bushings. My first thought was that the bronze bushings were causing the squeak, but I eventually narrowed it down to the shaft that comes out of the back of the transmission with the weight bolted on it (not sure what it's called). I took out the intake filter box so I could get at it and confirm that it was where the squeaking was coming from. That's definitely where it was coming from so I pulled back the boot seal and greased the shaft with some white lithium grease. That has worked a bit, but the squeak is still there.
View 8 RepliesMy wife always chastises me for not coming to a complete stop from backing up before I shift the car into drive. I do not shift when the car is still moving more than 1-2 MPH, in fact it is barely moving when I change gears. My wife insists that I come to a complete stop and wait 1-2 seconds before shifting from reverse to drive. She is convinced that I am doing damage to the transmission the way I shift. I insist that no damage is being done and point out that with over 100,000 miles there have been no transmission problems with the car. Am I damaging the transmission by shifting before I come to a complete stop in reverse?

Since moving to Tucson, AZ, from Flagstaff, AZ, the car jumps when changing gears (I have a manual) as if I was back in the day of learning how to drive a stick shift. This only happens in the summer, when temperatures get up to 110. Also, the idle is very rough and the car almost stalls when stopping quickly (this is infrequent). What's happening with my car?

Acceleration is fine but the van slows down quickly if I let go the gas pedal. Seems like it stuck in a gear. How to I troubleshoot and is there anything I can do at home?
View 19 RepliesBought a 2009 Chevy HHR with 35,000 miles in July, 2010. In the summer of 2011 the ignition was replaced, as the key would not turn. (The engine was running at the time. It was necessary to disconnect the battery to turn off the engine.) At 55,000 miles the transmission suffered "catastrophic failure" and the entire transmission assembly was replaced. (The engine light never came on, although the transmission was slipping frequently.) After driving the car with the new transmission between 100 and 200 miles, the engine light came on. The error code indicated a faulty transmission fluid pressure switch. The transmission changed gears harshly at times and the automatic door locks stopped working properly. Sometimes they would lock when the car was taken out of "park" and sometimes not. Likewise, they would not always unlock when the transmission was put in "park." After replacing the switch, the technician said that for no reason the security light came on briefly as did the passenger airbag "on" indicator light. Once again, after having driven between 100 and 200 miles, the engine light is on again, and gears are sometimes changing harshly. No diagnosis yet. Do I need an exorcist?
