Passat (B6) :: Cannot Shift Into Reverse
Jun 13, 2011
So, on Sunday, I'm driving around town, on a nice straight road. All of a sudden, I hear a hiccup or a funny sound from under the engine compartment. I didn't think much about it, but noticed during my next shift, that the shift was not that smooth. Running errands, I keep driving. Getting to a local Kinko's I stop, take care of business and go on, noticing still the notchy shifting.
Next is Target. I stop in, get my crap, come out and need to back up and guess what? No matter what I do, I can not get my 6SP manual Passat to go into reverse. Grinding gears, I finally get a hint of reverse and the car moves out of the spot enough for me to pull out and get out of the lot (where innocent bystanders must be thinking that old line 'grind me a pound' in their head after listening to that).
I get home, pull in the garage and wonder what I might find with the shift cables underhood. Nothing. All looks connected, not bent. Nothing unusual. Then I grab a flashlight. Then I notice it. A pyramid shape piece of plastic is under the shift selector on top to the transmission. What the? After a few minutes, I fish it out and notice it looks like one of those mounts on the bottom of my engine cover that retain it. Oddly it is the plastic boss that has broken off not the rubber grommet. And sure enough, the cover is fitting like sh%t and is missing one plastic foot/pyramid.
The good news is that it shifts again. The bad news is besides the engine cover (a cool $210 through ECS Tuning) is that my oil cap is split in half and is missing the top. I've never done this type of defect before, but knowing I can drive it like this for a few days, I closed the hood and went in and had a beer and told my wife that my Passat's future is starting to look iffy. Mostly that was emotion speaking, but can you believe that?
Where to get a oil-fill cap? Should I just go cold-air instead of a new engine cover (same price for a new Neuspeed cold-air kit)?

Just bought my '07 Wolfie a couple of weeks ago. This is the first car I've ever owned with an automatic trans. I park in my driveway which is at a slight incline, and when I shift to reverse to pull out, it seems there is much more resistance than there is when I'm just parked on a flat surface. I do not normally use the parking brake, but even if I do there is still the same amount of resistance when shifting to reverse after I release it. I
I've read so many horrors about the push button parking brake I'm really hesitant to use the thing for fear it will break.

I have a 99 passat w auto and tip it will only go into drive and reverse, the tip does nothing and it starts in 4th gear from a start. It works in reverse but I can move the shift lever into 1st or any other gear and it does nothing it wont down shift or the tip wont do anything I am at a loss, I heard it could be the TCM or a pressure selonoid in the tranny...

Today, without explanation the shift indicator on the dash on my 98 Passat Wagon highlights all gears. When you shift to any gear. . . . the display does not change. Further, shifting is rough from 'park.'
I noticed this problem after looking at all the fuses to see why the radio was not powering up. I have checked fuses. . . . and unplugged the battery and plugged it back in.

I shifted to "reverse" but the car went to "drive" instead. I've only had my Prius for 2 weeks. Today was the first time I encountered this problem, and it happened 3x.

So i decide to take a look since that was the first time that i have a problem with that, i thought that was something wrong with the Short Shifter so i decide to see how to install the Short Shifter so i can Re do it all by my self and now i cant Find any gear, No reverse, no 1st no 2d not even neutral.

So i went to start up my car after about an hour of not driving , (previously working fine) and I am not able to shift into reverse 1st or 2nd , ive been looking around and i guess the options are linkage, gear selectors, gear box or tranny.... Its a 337 so its a 6 speed . don't know if that makes a difference

Ok first off I am a used car dealer and have sold 20 plus gen IIs and never had to replace the main Hybrid battery pack... until this one! after i replaced it with a used one every thing seemed to be fine, I drove the car for a while the check engine light went off(the reason we knew the battery pack was bad) and after a few miles of driving the red triangle light went off.. yea! I think im done so we put all the carpet and rear seats back in and i get in it to start it and put it on the lot and it will not go into gear or start. all the dash lights come on and will go into neutral when i push the brake but just will not go into drive or neutral.
Here are some things we already tried:
1. put the original battery back in the car- no change
2. put our jump box to the small battery-no change
3. checked the brake lights they are coming on when i push the brake
4. put the scanner on the obdII- no codes
The car is an 06 with 200k miles in very good shape. Could it be in the shifter and not related to the battery change out?

Over the past few weeks, my car (2002 Golf 2.0L) has gotten really hard to shift into 1st and reverse (has crunched once or twice), but only when the car is hot, after driving it for a little while. When this happens, and I try to shift into reverse, the shifter feels really "sticky" and can get kind of stuck in the depressed position near reverse.
I bled the hydraulic system and replaced the slave cylinder, but no dice. I haven't noticed any clutch slipping. Shop wants to replace the whole clutch. Is this the right answer?

I have a 2011 Jetta 5 spd, was driving today and suddenly I could not shift in 4th, 5th or reverse. This is the first time this as happen, I have never had any issues with the far. I don't know much about transmissions. The clutch seems to be working fine as I can shift with ease from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

My brother in law has a 93 explorer which developed a serious transmission leak and had to be towed home. We suspected a blown front seal, which we replaced. We also replaced the transmission filter and pan gasket. When we started it up, it seemed like it was stuck in gear and wanted to move forward no matter what gear it was set to. Even wanted to go in park and neutral. We topped off the fluid, and finally got park to work, but all other gears including reverse want to go forward and it seems as though it is not shifting at all. Could we have forgotten a connection of some sort, of could something internal been damaged when the fluid was lost?

Finished my flush, but now it won't shift to reverse unless i shift all the way to drive first. I thought it might be the hard shifting lever(i think something is up with the linkage), so i shifted to neutral, then reverse, but no success. It's still about 1/4-1/2" overfilled, I jsut ran to the hardware store and it's consistently still not shifting to reverse unless I take it all the way to drive first.
Really hoping I didn't break something in the process... I did do the shifting through the gears while it was flushing out the old coolant, could the valve be stuck due to that?

It is a 2003 Excursion with V10, 4WD. When I start up and shift to reverse, the gear selector shows it moving, but the truck will not move. It just sits there and revs up. I have to shift back to park and then to reverse again, then you can feel the transmission dropping into reverse. It doesn't do this all the time. There is no pattern to it, just whenever the transmission feels like messing with me.

2002 LS V8 162K Miles. Its been sitting in the garage for 10 days. ...went on vacation. Started her up and let it idle down. Shifted to reverse and transmission shift error displayed. Went back to P. Waited a minute. Shifted again and she was hard jumping into the gears. The error went away. Drove it around and it seems to shift fine. Opinions?

I am planning to buy this 2012 Camry LE (38k), automatic, I am on the test run and realized that the car's shifting from park to reverse is harder than shifting from reverse to drive. What I mean is, it is really hard to move the selector from Park to Reverse.
