Passat (B6) :: Blinking Thermometer With Wavy Lines Under In MFI
Dec 8, 2008
I got up this morning to a relatively cold 16 degrees. I started my Passat 2.0T to let it warm up about 10 minutes before I left. I got in the car, and started to drive and noticed in the upper mfi display a blinking thermometer with wavy lines under that. so I figured it must be something coolant related. Having to get to work, I took it slow and steady, after all it was cold...
The temp gauge came up to normal, which is dead on in the center... not even a fluctuation. Got to work, shut off the car, counted to 10 and started it... no more flashing light... car sat all day, about 9 hours, and drove home... was fine the whole time...Was this a fluke, should I check the coolant, will any coolant do? And to think I've had 8 or so months without a problem. Hopefully just a reminder I am driving a VW.

My MFD display is starting to have a mind of it's own lately. The problems will only occur during the first 10 - 15 minutes of driving, and then the display will be normal for the rest of the drive. It is starting to occur about every 3rd day now; vs. once a month.
Various Symptoms Observed: Loss of pixels, bar lines across display, reverse video, backwards video, font triple size, no display, display floating across screen, no change in display, extra pixels, total pixalation of screen, rapidly changing displays, brightness levels changing.
I suspect either that:
1) The MFD display connection is not totally secure or is corroded, and temperature/vibration is affecting the inputs to the display board,
2) The voltage supply to the MFD board (if there is one) is slowly degrading and I will eventually experience total failure.
I have captured some of the Failure Symptoms on my digital camera (video mode), but not the recent more troubling ones. I'll have to keep my camera with me at all times to capture the rest of the failures.

It seems that whenever it drops below 20 degrees, my windshield washer fluid lines freeze up on my '03, even though the blue stuff is proported to go down to minus 20 (the jug in my garage is still nice and liquid, even at these colder temps).
Is this a fixable problem? Should I switch over to a different type of juice? I don't remember this happening as frequently in previous years as it has this year.

Going to replace brake lines tomorrow and would like to confirm the torque spec on the actual banjo bolt as not to break them but also don't want to leave them too loose...

This morning the outside temperature reading on my dash in my '12 Golf hit 39 degrees but I didn't hear it ding because I had my radio on and I was paying attention to oncoming traffic while at a stop sign. Then this afternoon I was in motion, with the radio off, and the outside temperature reading hit 39 degrees and it didn't ding - so the first time obviously wasn't due to not paying attention to the dinging. It just . . . stopped dinging! I hope this isn't a major repair, I'm glad it's still under warranty.

My digital exterior temp reads -40 degrees in May when it's toasty warm outside.

My dad has a 2000 Mountaineer (Millennium edition) and the Compass/Thermometer display has not worked in months. I looked through the Manual and looked through the fuse block and they do not specify which number on the fuse block deals with this. Its probably tied in with something else but its not clearly noted in the manual.

I have a 2004 Solara. Ever since I could remember, the outside thermometer has been giving me false readings. When I pulled out of my garage today, the outside thermometer read 50 degrees. I drove to work without stopping for 60 miles and the gauge still read 50 degrees. When I got to work, the gauge quickly dropped to 41 degrees.
This problem has happened many time before. When the car is in motion, the temperature will not change. When the car comes to a stop, then it will adjust. Where is the sensor for the thermometer? Maybe the air is not reaching it due to the high speed.

This has happened a few times now. First time at a stop light, and most recently while coming down a hill. All of my needles drop and I get no response from the engine, brakes and power steering work for a little while and then they cut out. I pull over to the side of the road, turn it off, sometimes it turns back on immediately, other times it will do the same thing needles go up and back down.

I just noticed today my passenger side windshield is wavy. Is there a TSB for it? I would like to get mine replace, but my dealer said it's within spec...

After disconnecting my am/fm/cd factory unit in my 2014 F250, my outside thermometer does not work. The digital readout has three dashes and an F instead of numbers. What is the fact that the stereo controls the thermometer? Is there any way to deactivate this, so that I don't have to stare at ___F? I'd rather that it just is blank. Is this the same result that other aftermarket stereo installs have got???

I have a 2011 III with leather seats. The car has around 3500 miles and I have noticed the bottom of the seats look wavy and not flat. I wanted to check here before I took it to the dealer to see what they would say, probably that it is "normal". I am afraid the seat will wear faster where the waves are.

My car has the wavy acceleration feel and sometimes hesitates a bit. It is way worse when the a/c is on. I wonder if this is a octane or sparkplug issue. On my old cruze 1.4t the gap was wrong from the factory. It came with all four gapped under .022 but the manual called for .028. Everyone gapped to .035 with great results. Not checked the sparkplugs yet?

My car Gen.2 was 200K. I change the water pump and thermostat on 150K. The reason to change the parts because I think my car a lot of miles. The car run great no problems. Till last month my car had overheat on freeway at night time. The temperature up to 245 F have the red triangle on dash and thermometer icon on Navigation screen. Before overheat on same day on the daytime when I take off I heard sound water running in the engine. The day after I check the level coolant in the reservoir tank was full but in the radiator need to fill up the coolant. After that when I drove the car the coolant overflow form the reservoir all the time. I have to check and fill up the coolant in the radiator every morning. I been the many shop ask them about the symptom of my car. Some they told me water pump failure, some said thermostat failure open all the time or some told me head gasket leak. I check all the engine didn't see any leak but I saw coolant overflow from reservoir...

I just picked up a new GTI and noticed it was riding very firm and bouncing on the highway so I took it into the dealer and they forgot to remove the strut pucks. Even though the pucks are gone it's still bouncing pretty severely when on the highway especially when the concrete is just slightly wavy. I don't mind a slight firmness over cracks and bumps but the strong bouncing on certain roads is unbearable. I only rode with the pucks in for about 500 miles but had problems with it bouncing uncomfortably?
I hope that nothing is wrong with the suspension but if this is how all GTI's are then I might have to trade it in for a jetta or something.

I bought a 2010 prius 3 weeks ago and a squeaking sound came out after driving it for a week. The sound is like a wooden bed not screwed tight being shaken. My prius has 40000 miles on it and the warranty has expired already. I brought it to a toyota dealership and they could not find where the noise is coming from. I decided to bring it back to the dealership I bought it from and they also could not determine where its coming from. They said they need more time to find it. The squeaks often comes out in wavy roads and bumps and in both low and high speeds.

We just purchased an Aerio for my teenage son. We all just love the car. It is the base sedan with 5-spd. There is one problem we did not notice on the test drive. It seems that when the front windshield was made, there is a slight "wavy pattern" that you can see. While it does not inhibit your vision, it is a little irritating.

My '93 Metro 3 cyl (The Phoenix) is becoming a bit 'Long in the Tooth'...
Now, this summer, it has started creaking and popping when I go over wavy roads or take sharp curves at speed.
If I accelerate/decelerate the frame pops over on the passenger side and I hear pops in the trunk area.
I wonder how much longer it will be safe to drive.

I have a 2002 accord 4-cyl with a 5-speed with 89,xxx miles. Just a few months ago, I noticed a clunking sound coming from the front suspension when I go over certain bumps. "Certain" bumps are usually wavy pavement or dips (not wide dips, but short/concise ones), and sometimes certain speed bumps. Sometimes the sound happens regardless of the types of bumps though, but the aforementioned ones usually bring the noise quite consistently. The sound hasn't really gotten worse, but it hasn't been getting better either.
A while back when I had my timing belt done, the mechanic stated that one (or more) of my engine mounts were worn. Is it possible one or more of my engine mounts is the source of this issue (from the engine "rattling" around in the compartment. I'm not sure if that's even possible, just a hypothesis) or is it purely suspension. PS. The sound isn't quite a sharp metal on metal sound. Its more of a "thump" or "clunk" coming from the front end (left or right) as if its bottoming out or a bushing or spacer has worn off. Its just loud enough to drive me crazy, and sometimes I can feel it through the floor.

My wife's 2003 GLX (V6) atx fwd wagon has almost endless CEL issues. On one occasion it momentarily went into the blinking mode, which did not recur after shutting the car off and restarting. Problems have been all over the map, or so says the dealer (Martens VW in Washington DC), e.g. crankcase ventilation, temp sensor and so on. Car has always run fine but every time we take it into get the CEL fixed, it comes back in about 2 days. BTW, I just bought an extended warranty (before the mfg version expired).
