Passat (B6) :: 4Motion VR6 - Whining Sound When Rev Under 2200 Rpm
Mar 19, 2009
Does your car make an annoying whining sound when accelerating? My engine wines almost as if it had a S/C. You can only hear it when you rev under 2200rpm.

03 Xterra makes whining noise at 2200-2500 rpm. Noise goes away outside this range. At 3000 rpm sounds like tachy cable rattles. Have had Nissan check trans, diff, muffler. No luck.

I have a B5.5 1.8T 5 Speed FWD and I was wondering if there was a way to convert it to a 4motion?

Alright, need to decide between a 2000 Passat 4motion with 108k miles, no maintenance history - OR - a 1997 Toyota 4runner, all maintenance history available, 150k, new breaks, timing and water pump just done. The VW is 1k more. I should add the 4runner has zero rust, and no frame rot.
Here is why I'm having a hard time.
1. I like VW's
2. MPG / Cost for gas is actually LESS for the 4runner... no premium, 4motion nets 17mpg avg - 4runner nets 16mpg avg (I drive 50/50 city highway).
The roads where I live are HORRIBLE - 1ft deep potholes are normal in the city, and unavoidable, expansion joints rise up to 4" at times- which feels like hitting a damn log.
I wrench my own cars, I've never gone to a mechanic or dealer ever. Had a mk2 gti, mk2 jetta, mk3 vr6 gti, a mk3 cabrio, and a mk4 jetta 1.8t in my past. Ive done timing belts, CV's, wheel bearings, control arms, struts, rebuilt heads. BUT- the Passat looks to be a complete PITA to work on (insane timing belt procedure, 8 front control arms, TCM water rot issues, etc). The 4runner appears on surface- to be much easier to wrench on - I could be wrong. I do have a VAGCOM, which supports a bit on the VW.
I love VW's - but I want AWD (or true 4x4), space, and something I can actually work on. The reason for AWD is I have family near the upper peninsula of MI I would like to visit year round.

I have a 2002 Passat 4motion 2.8 automatic. I recently moved from PA to Florida and love my car but don't need AWD down here. Could I possibly disconnect the drive components going to the rear of the car...also hoping to get better gas mileage from the disconnect.

This morning I just began noticing a low pitched whining sound when I accelerate at low speeds (below 30 mph). The sound seems to disappear at higher speeds for some reason. It bothered me so much that I arranged to have all the timing belt service done....I have been putting this off....84K miles now on a V6 Passat. I'm thinking it is the water pump noise, but I am not an expert on cars like most of you are. What all SHOULD be done when you change the timing belt?

My 2004 V6 has about 21,000 miles, and has run perfectly from day one. However, the last few days I've noticed a whining sound which I think is from the transmission. when I first start out, at very low speeds. I don't think it occurs at higher speeds, but I'm not sure because of road and engine noise. The noise doesn't really bother me--goes away quickly. But is this something I need to have the dealer look at? It's still under warranty.

My 99B5 1.8T Auto is making some weird sounds... I heard that it is either a serious issue or just a lack of fluids. Sad to say that the same sound was coming from my Toyota Highlander right before the transmission died on it (I know, completely different vehicle; but same sound). What I can/should do about it. The sound starts in 1st, loudest in 2nd, and begins to leave around mid 3rd gear. (Again, same as the Highlander), I don't want this car to die too.

Recently bought a 2015 Golf Tsi. i have done around 4000 miles. there has been a ticking and a "coin rubbing together" sound when accelerating until about 2200 revs. dealer could not find the solution... the car has been very jolty, and at very low idle speeds, very rough and stuttery. The video shows the ticking. Could it be an exhaust/fuel injector problem? [URL] .....

After having the stereo replaced over the weekend, our car has now developed a whining sound that increases with rpm's. My wife didn't notice the whining sound until today, which means the car was driven at least around 100 miles between the installation and this morning when she noticed it after leaving the house.
It sounds the same as I've heard before when the alternator makes a noise through the speakers, however the sound doesn't sound as though it's coming through the speakers. With the Pioneer unit that we have, you can turn off the audio source, but I don't really see a way to completely turn off the unit.
I went down with the thought of removing the fuse for the audio system, however the manual states that at the time of writing, they couldn't document all of the fuse mappings and to refer to the dealer.
We have an appointment in the morning to have the dealer check out the noise, but if it ends up being the stereo install that caused the problem, I'm thinking they may charge me for the service visit.
Which fuse controls the stereo so that I can pull that to see if the noise stops?

Is rattling under acceleration normal on the tig? Sounds like a heatshield to me or something, usually around 2500 rpm or so, pretty disappointing on a 35k dollar vehicle.
Imagine a drawer of silverware being shaken around, that's kind of what it sounds like, mostly noticeable with the windows down.

Couple of days ago when my wife turned the car on and started driving, the battery light came on and when she stepped on the gas it made a whining sound. Also when she moved the gear into reverse, the door locks did not lock automatically. Once the car was driven about 30 minutes and she got on the highway, the battery light turned off and the sound went away. I was not able to replicate that issue when she arrived that night or the next day.
Should I just replace the alternator even if the problem does not recur?

Over the past week I've observed a whining sound. I've been trying to narrow it down and here is what I've got:
- It is speed related but not RPM related.
- It is not louder at any particular speed.
- It happens when coasting in neutral (manual transmission).
- The volume does not change based on whether turning or going straight.
- The pitch is mid/high, very similar to the whining from a too tight timing belt. And it gets lower and higher based on speed.
- As best as I can tell it is coming from the front driver's side.
- It is intermittent, although it's there more often than not.
- No uneven wear on front tires or other signs.
It's worth mentioning that another sound came soon after this whining. It's a sort of fluttering click sound. It becomes a lot louder when accelerating uphill. This also is speed related but not RPM related, in that the flutter/click increases in speed as the vehicle increases in speed.

2001 Chevy impala with 2 problems. First, I get a whining sound that lasts about 1 min after the car has run for about 5 min, and as soon as the noise starts the engine temp goes up (high, but not in the red). It's not the accessory belt, revving the engine doesn't do anything and either does putting the car in neutral. I can get the tone to slightly change by turning the a/c on and off, but it doesn't stop the whining. It sounds like it is coming from the radiator fan and when I tapped the one fan the other day, the noise stopped, not sure if it was just a coincidence. Second, I get a popping noise coming from the front of the car when accelerating. I don't think it's the shocks because I compressed the shocks by bouncing on the hood and got no noise.

I've got a noise that has me puzzled on my 1995 Chevy C1500 (2wd). I hear a mid to high pitched noise when I'm driving at between 45 and 55 mph (70-90 kph). It varies in pitch depending on the speed I'm going, starts at around 45 and goes away above 55, and also tends to go away if I lift off the gas. The sound occurs in any gear, but always at the same speeds. My leading suspect is the differential, but I haven't ruled out anything yet. I pulled the differential plug and the fluid isn't very dark.

So I took delivery of my ordered PP GTI about three weeks ago, When driving under light throttle, when upshifting or downshifting amongst the first four gears, the car makes a whining/ humming noise from about 1700 to 2300RPM. I lifted the front end of the car to check things out and noticed that the left axle makes some weird sounds. I'm hoping it's a bad CV, issue with transmission (not clutch related)?

I have a 2005 2wd trailblazer with about 100k miles. When the car first starts for the day it has a loud whining sound for about 30 seconds. Sounds like it is coming from transmission. After the 30 seconds all is good. It has been getting progressively worse. Almost sounds like a jet engine. The sound will sputter and few times and stop. Its not the clutch fan or belts. It definitely from the back side of the motor.

I recently purchased a 2002 Yukon Denali. I've noticed a whining sound from the front end when I'm at a steady speed. When I take my foot off the pedal, the sound stops. I had it in the dealership and they first thought it was the front drive shaft and replaced it. That didn't work at all, so they then told me it was due to the all wheel drive. What is causing this?
