So my wife's '08 Passat (2.0T Sedan) started making this weird clunking type of sound when you move the steering wheel. It can be parked or moving and it sounds. It is not speed related it sounds like the steering is crapping out. I'm dropping the car at the dealer on saturday ....
View 10 RepliesSo my 09' Camry now has 130K KMs on it and for the last few months I've had an issue where when I turn the steering wheel (at rest and while moving) there is a clunking sound and feel in the steering wheel at various spots in the steering wheel rotation.
I'm worried the u-joints (if it uses them) in the steering column are worn out and might need replacing/lubricating but I'm not sure how to address the issue without an expensive Out of warranty visit to the dealer.
I have a significant amount of play in my steering wheel, and I notice a clicking/clunking sound in the steering wheel when the steering actually moves the tires. This makes it very hard to drive in a straight line, and that's kind of important when your car is 19 feet long . Is there anything that could be cheaply/easily fixed to remedy this?

So I just came back from the stealer(Koeppel). I had them check out my car because it was making this clunking sort of noise from the steering wheel. When you turn the steering wheel, when it is turned straight, left and right, it makes this obnoxious noise. It sounds pretty bad.I thought it might be an axle problem or possibly a bearing. Now heres the funny part. My dealer says that it is normal. They said they called VW technical support and they told them that the way the rack&pinion was built on our cars, that causes the noise. He said i can show you 3 other Passats that make the same noise. I didn't bother because i did not have the time. I am going to go tomorrow again to see if they can find anything else on it. If they dont, i am going to ask them to show me the other Passats with the same noise.

A few things I noticed on the car, While driving I hear this clicking sound from somewhere behind the steering wheel. It sounds as if it's a relay
clicking on and off. The funny thing is it happens at odd times, sometimes very frequently, sometimes not as much. I tried with the A/C on and off and it seems to make no difference. Is it related to the electro-mechanical steering? Funny thing is, I remember hearing similar sounds from other Passats. I had test driven...
door and panel piece in the car is rattling, hopefully things will "settle in" a bit after a while. Are the screws that attach the trunk to the rails supposed to be body colored? This is an interesting touch.
2008 R32 with 17k ... What might be causing this sound which is just a faint clicking clicking sound that happens intermittently when driving.
I have an appointment at VW dealer tomorrow but they do not want to take ownership as I have replaced the head unit and have steering wheel controls for my Alpine IVA 505.
It is not electronic as the controls are solid state and the can bus adapter is behind the head unit. It seems mechanical but what could it be? I definitely notice that at a stop when rocking the brake that create the start of the clicking sound .
Getting a slight clicking sound/feel when turning the steering wheel when either stopped or moving very slowly. It's most noticeable when turning in and out of a parking space. Don't think it's subframe but may the strut bearing caps.

I'll get the sound too what could this be.

View 1 RepliesBasically when I'm coming into my driveway (I turn to the right into it) I hit with the right front first and get this shuddering sound accompanied by a sloppy feeling in the steering wheel.
Sounds like the old door stop Springs. I sometimes get it as well when hitting bumps with either side at a time but not when hitting speed bumps or bumps where both wheels hit at the same time.
Went to the dealership but they couldn't reproduce it on the newly built read that's as smooth as glass.....
I have the below multi-function steering wheel installed on my 2008 Passat. The steering wheel came out of a 2010 CC and the buttons do not currently work.
Which steering wheel control module would I need and what is the price on that?
Besides the steering wheel control module and programming via VCDS/VAGCOM, do I need anything else for this to work?
I notice that when I jerk the steering wheel left and right fast (1-2 inches) I hear small knocking sound. Seems to have narrowed it down to the right side steering rack inside the booth.

When I turn the steering wheel, there is a groaning sound both to the left and right. the other problem is when I'm accelerating slowly up an incline and turning the steering wheel, there a type of clicking sound I hear and feel on my accelerator. By the way, it's a V6 engine, Front wheel drive.
View 2 RepliesI had my power steering motor and ignition replaced according to the Saturn recall 2 months ago. Went out yesterday and the PWR STR warning light was on, unable to move steering wheel. Turned the car off and waited a few minutes and turned the car back on and the power steering was fine. Since I just had the motor replaced do you think it is just a fuse? Or should I call the dealer?
View 2 RepliesThe steering wheel controls, horn and cruise control recently died in our '08 wagon. The fact that they went out suddenly and simultaneously suggests that they might be tied to a fuse. I looked around the intarwebs via google and saw some references to a problem with HomeLink wiring in the sunvisor blowing "fuse 5" on older models, but I'm unsure if something like this is even valid for the B6.
View 9 RepliesDoes the 'easy entry' function on your Phaeton only cause the steering wheel to move up and down, or, does it cause the steering wheel to move up and down and the driver seat to slide back and forward? My understanding is that both actions should take place - wheel up and seat back (or vice-versa), but I can only ever recall seeing the steering wheel of my car move up.

View 2 RepliesHaving issue when turn steering wheel so slightly either way there is a clunking in the wheel? I took my car in for some maintenance yesterday and 1 was to look into seeing what it was. They said a couple of cars came in like mine and it was a gear on the end of the column that the teeth are worn or even broke. The gear isn't expensive but the labor is. I am also getting the 60k mileage service as well. I should've gotten the extended warranty. Gonna be about 650.00 but i love the car and i`m planning on keeping it and once its done the wife gets a new one, i keep this and get rid of our 98 malibu.
View 3 RepliesI have a Jeep Liberty 2002 Sports. When it is cold and the car has been sitting for a while, when I start the car, the steering wheel is locked or hard to move. I have not tried to force it. But it will move if I rev the engine to a certain point. Once I rev the engine I can move the steering wheel again. I have left the car to warm up before revving the engine, but this does not work with the steering, I have to rev the engine in order to "unlocked" the wheel.
