My wife has a 2008 turbo. She uses the A/C year-round here in southern AZ. She notices a bad smell when it's on-- she describes as similar to rotten cheese. I assume it's some kind of fungus or mold in the A/C, similar to a problem I had with an Accord, years ago. What about getting rid of the smell?
Other than that, the car is absolutely perfect --no problems in 2 years of ownership.
I just got a 2008 Passat and have noticed that after I start the car, for about 10 seconds, I can very faintly smell coolant, it happens when the fan is off or on, and the temp is either on hot or cold. Its not bad, but it is there for short time.
It reminds me of how my older VW's would have a bad heater core, but even that was only noticeable if the heat was ON, this happens heat on or off. Also I see no leaks in the engine of any sort, the car only has 150 miles on it currently.
Three times in the past few months I have smelled something burning in my car. It only lasts for about 10-30 seconds. I've taken it into the shop to have checked with no results. One dealer told me I was smelling burning leaves caught in the manifold. It sure didn't smell like burning leaves to me though.

View 13 RepliesA few weeks back I changed my plugs and since then I've had the smell of gas getting in the vent system in my truck. So far, I've replaced the injector orings, not that there was any sign of any leakage, but it's simple insurance. I've now replaced the EVAP purge valve again to no avail.
It smells worse when I fire it up or when I come to a stop. The smell gets stronger as the tank empties.
I can find no sign of leaks, broken or disconnected lines or anything. If I run the engine and try to smell for gas in the engine compartment, there is none. Nor is there any after I shut it off. I did look at the connector to the EVAP solenoid, as I heard they tend to corrode. But it looked perfect.
I get this burning smell when i accelerate all the way and it does not smell like gas, I don't know what it is. When I drive normally it's fine. When I stop flooring it, it stops to smell burnt. There's no engine light or anything either. I went to the dealer and asked around some mechanics and they can't find anything wrong.Its a 2008 with 133k miles and i just got it.

View 6 RepliesToday while leaving work my car was giving off a strong fuel smell. Wife noticed the garage stunk of gasoline when she got home.
I removed the engine cover just now, and ran the car and checked for any leaks around the fuel rail area, but didn't notice anything.
Just wanted to let know that the mildew smell i had in my '10 ISF was resolved with a simple spray into the a/c intake vents at the bottom of the windshield. Changing the cabin filter and lysol didnt do squat. its called "a/c treatment spray" available at Lexus or at the auto stores.

I'm using Mobile 1 5w30, a stock air box and I have headers. I'm also running 305 PSS tires, and a pretty well modified suspension. I have no facts to back this up but I am assuming because of my setup that I can get a little more lateral acceleration then most.
I have zero oil consumption, no leaks and good test results from Blackstone. My only thought is that I am pushing a little oil in to the crank case breathers during this hard cornering.
So I had my sikky headers installed about 3 weeks ago by JE import. Since then they have been a constant hassle by installing a faulty O2 simulator which made me have to get in the car yet again drive to them an hour an a half away.
After another week I got CEL for a second time. After they fixed the faulty O2 sim....
Recently I have noticed a very strong fuel smell while driving. I understand you might get a fuel smell while at a light and the windows are down but I am experience one at cruising speed. I have gotten my car lifted three times in the past week to tighten the flanges connecting to the joeZ as well as checked for leaks (none were found) and there still is this strong smell
I do not want to install high flow cats.
I have noticed a smell like heating when doing a suddenly hard acceleration (up to 6000 RPM) on my R32 2008, but when driving normally there is nothing.
View 10 RepliesI only have about 3,500 miles on my car, every now and then I get a faint smell of possibly antifreeze when I open either of the front doors after a good drive. It's very strange because if I try to locate the source, the smell goes away. Once I exit the car and sniff around, there is no smell in the wheel wells, in the front grill, or under the hood. I then try to sniff under the car just under the front doors, and there is no smell! It is driving me crazy because it does not make any sense. My antifreeze level did not drop, and there is no evidence of any leaks. I didn't put it on my lift yet to examine it carefully, but I'll do that on the next oil change. I was wondering if there are possibly some hoses that go to the rear of the car for the rear a/c and heat. If so, maybe there is a slight leak on one of the clamps?

View 6 RepliesI have an '04 f150 4x4 5.4L lariat new body style, I purchased it a few months ago. (I had an '03 f150 4x4 5.4L lariat that I am comparing the new one to) It seems like this 04 doesnt want to get up and go,(like the '03 did) best way to describe it is like having a potato stuck in the tail pipe. then after driving it for a few weeks I got CEL I think it was P0140, the day I was going to change bank 1&2 sensors 2, the code went away. So I didn't change them.
I instead opted to change the plugs (all plugs came out fine) now I notice a fuel smell when I let off the accelerator,(not sure if I smelled it before) its like a boat exhaust smell- not a raw fuel smell. I am wondering if all these things add up to a clogged or partially clogged cat or just a bad o2 sensor, I dont to spent $100+ for the rear two o2 sensors and still have the same problems, nor do I want to replace the cats and find out it was the o2 sensors all along. when I smell it in the cab, I do not smell it anywhere else, like: under the hood, or any where else under the truck, nor do I see a leak under the truck.

I can smell it all of the time even if the fan is not running, but it is so much worse when I turn the heat on. What the smell could be, It doesn't smell like a dead animal to me either. What I can do about it? It's getting cold out and I can turn my heat on without gagging..

It can be faint or extremely loud and I can keep it doing it if I keep the throttle in the same spot when it starts. Also now lately when it does it I can smell exhaust in the cab. No codes are being thrown...naturally
View 1 RepliesI've noticed a strange problem that makes it next to impossible for me to use his truck unless the vents are off or I have both windows all the way down with it on. It smells like it has a fuel leak of some sort and in the cab of the truck it smells bad while driving and gets worse when sitting still, to me it smells like gas and when I open the hood on his truck after idling about 5 minutes or so I can smell it in there so i know its somewhere under the hood but for the life of me I can't see anywhere where its leaking or anything like that but I can smell it all darn day. His truck is an 05 F-150 with a 5.4 and I'd like to figure this out before it becomes a real big problem. I've worked with fuel injected cars and trucks before but I have little knowledge of the mod engines at all. And he is still driving it like that and I just wanna make sure it either is not gas or is just something simple I'm overlooking.
