Passat (B6) :: 2006 V6 FWD - Flames Started Coming Out Of Hood / Vents When Driving
Aug 13, 2007
My wife was driving the car on the freeway and flames started coming out of the hood/vents/etc. We just picked the car up from service on Friday...Today is Monday. Whats the standard protocol for a car that's is still under warranty that goes up in flames?

My 2001.5 Passat traditionally does not start easily when it is less than 6degrees outside. Today it was that cold..it started easily..but about 30 minutes into my drive to work..I realized it was a little smoky and exhaustish smelling in the car..once I realized it wasn't the car next to me..i realized if I turned off the heat..the smell went away..but at the stoplight..i could see smoke coming from under the hood..out the corner by the passenger/dashboard... Car has 80,000, recent oil change, what it is?

I have a 2004 F150 4x4 super crew with te 5.4L in it. Truck has 200K plus miles on it and I went to start it after driving (it may have say for 10 min) the truck hesitated and didn't start and smoke started coming from under the hood. Looked like it was coming from the drivers side maybe mid fender or closer to the firewall. Look at it and nothing was on fire but something defiantly happened cause now its compensating for something. The rpms are up from what they usually are and the drivers information was cleared. Truck runs now but just worried

I have a 2000 2wd with the 5.4 in it. I tow a travel trailer and loaded is 6500lbs. Today leaving the campground I had to climb an extremely steep hill as soon as you left the campground. No time to build speed. The old Ex made it, but I was definitely worried. The truck ran fine the rest of the 2 hours home. I went to back my camper into its spot to store, and smoke started coming out from under the hood. When I crawled under it, tranny fluid was leaking on the ground. A pretty steady drip. I let it cool down, added fluid and drove around. Didn't leak anymore. Did the tranny just get hot and had to burp? The drip was coming from where the tranny connects to the motor.

I drove the family to the lake yesterday and returned with no problems at all. This morning I started the car and there was a really loud rattle from under the hood. I popped the hood and listened more closely. It sounded like it was coming from the top-end. When it shut down it seemed to whine a bit and kind of ground to a halt, almost like a belt was rubbing something. I tried to start again. Now it turns over but doesn't start. The oil's maybe .5-quart low, none on the driveway underneath and no strange smells.
I'm going to have it towed to the dealer today. I'm a bit concerned though I do have the security lockout feature. I also noticed the last time I washed it that both tail lights had moisture inside the lens and my power lock buttons are bubbling up. This one may take a while. I'll update as I know more.

I have a 2007 Honda Odyssey touring model. Recently I had it serviced at the Honda dealership. In addition to my requested front end alignment and oil and filter change, they talked me into a radiator flush, fuel inj. service, air filter replacements and battery service. I drove the car home after wards even filling up with gas before going home. This drive was about 55 miles. I never noticed any problems. The next day, I left for Montghomery AL towing a trailer with a motorcycle trike on it. We stopped for lunch and continued. The car suddenly started making a grinding noise from engine compartment and suddenly white smoke started coming out from the hood. I immediately pulled over and we got out of the car for fear of fire. This was the first time I had any indication of a problem.
After a short time, I opened the hood to see what was wrong and noticed that the radiator cap was sitting upside down next to opening. I had the vehicle towed to Chattanooga where I was told there was serious damage to the engine. I had them repair it (they were an AAA approved towing and repair shop). I also took pictures of the engine compartment. I went back to the dealership and asked to be reembursed for my expenses and the cost of repairs and the owner refused. He said he didn't believe they left the cap off and since he started out in the service department he didn't believe the car could even go that far without overheating. My question is: Is it possible for a 2007 Honda Odyssey to travel approximately 220 miles over two days before overheating and wrecking the engine if the radiator cap was left off and/or if no fluid was even added and the radiator cap was left off?

Haven't posted in a long while because...on the coldest day of winter this year (it was around 5 degrees) I took off for work early one morning and before I made it to the highway, my oil light started blinking...I kind of ignored it for a moment because I have a small leak that requires I add about a quart a week (ok maybe this was a good leak already) in any event I had just topped off the oil that morning so I knew I should be alright and since it was so cold I reasoned that it was just an electrical fluke that was gonna clear up once we got warmed up.
Shortly after that I noticed I wasn't really accelerating as quickly as would be normal...so I kinda thought about the blinking light for a second and ended up shutting her down. When I hopped out to look under the hood there was oil everywhere...as well as a trail leading all the way back to my spot in the driveway. I ended up towing her home and she has been sitting since.
Today was the first nice day and I couldn't wait to see what was up so I filled her up with oil again and waited for the leak...nothing. So I put her on the charger and figured it would have to be fairly obvious where the leak was coming from if I fired her up for a second.
I have to say she sounded awful...valves clambering away...but the oil leak revealed itself and I shut her down immediately. I am really hoping that I didn't do that much internal damage and that all the valve noise is primarily from it not being started for so long...but I guess I will have to wait and see on that.
The leak is coming from just to the right of and slightly above the oil filter casing. Its definitely not the casing itself or anything to do with the oil filter...it appears to be just above this thing, what it is but it has a large bolt holding it on (large like the 36mm on the oil filter itself).

When I drive around I feel warm air coming from the vents.
Now keep in mind this is my first vw but speaking just from previous vehicles when you drive around and the air is set to cold even if the system off cool air makes it's way through the system from the outside because the fresh air vents are open and the car is in motion.
In my R warm air always makes its way through, but keep in mind if i turn the system on cold air will blow because of the a/c.

Truck is a 02' F350 xlt crew cab, 7.3l, 4x4, 4R100, manual transfer case, 125,000 miles.
So me and the family were pulling out of the driveway tonight and electrical smoke starts blowing out the vents. My wife had just plugged a cheap USB charger into the auxiliary outlet above the cup holders for only 30 seconds. I immediately pulled back into the driveway, yanked the charger out, and found it had melted a hole in the side of it. No smoke had come from the charger or the outlet. The outlet looked fine and wasn't hot to the touch. I pulled the dash off real fast and started grabbing wires, feeling for anything that was hot or melting. I couldn't find anything.
I pulled the cover off under the steering wheel and couldn't find anything. I never turned the truck off while I was looking. After a few minutes, I noticed that the cover over the fuse panel was warm. Pulled the cover off and felt every fuse end and they were all cool to the touch. The relays in the middle were all pretty warm(almost hot to where I couldn't touch them). I was still faintly smelling the burnt smell and I couldn't tell if it was just stuck in my nose. I disconnected the batteries and we had to switch cars(heading to a bbq).
So I just got home and I'm going to start looking for any obvious signs first. What could be going on at the panel? So far, everything is still working. I haven't found any blown fuses.

[07 Camry XLE V6] A while back my wife mentioned that smoke was coming from the front vents after a bit of driving with the A/C on. This does not happen regularly and the Freon levels do not change. The other day, I witnessed this myself. There was no sweet freon odor - it didn't have an odor much at all. Then after about five minutes, it just went away. If freon was leaking out, my A/C today would not be working, but as far as I can tell, everything still seems to work. I know this car has a design flaw that allows a bit of standing water to remain, but if a drain was clogged, wouldn't the smoke remain consistent or my floor would start to fill with water? {This happened on my buddies Buick}
To answer some basic questions:
1. No it was not smokey or rainy outside
2. Nobody in my family smokes
3. ~85-degrees outside, AC set to 74, not full cold when this happened.
4. We were in the car for only a few minutes after leaving the mall (which is approx 30 miles from my house) On the way there, 5 miles of max A/C to cool the car; no smoke.
5. A/C appears back to normal for now, so I'm doubting a drain clogged.

Had an incident this past weekend where the heat shields on my 2000 passat limited, v-6, 5-spd automatic, burst into flames unexpectedly during the course of a vacation drive in the mountains.
Contacted vw customer relations and their position is that since the vehicle has 148,000 miles on it, and it is out of warranty, it would not be unexpected for the heat shields to degrade and burn, so it is my problem for not having the heat shields properly maintained. Since when are heat shields a maintenance item?
I did not design them or choose the inappropriate materials to manufacture them. I would like to know and make vw aware that there is a very serious safety risk in the choice of materials they have used for heat shielding.
Am I wrong to expect that a heat shield would prevent fires, not cause them? Is it also wrong for me to expect vw to be responsible for the choice of materials they used, that now poses a serious risk to the safety of myself and others?

On the way home tonight, the Ex started to make what I can best describe as a screech/squeal. It sounds a little bit like a pulley spinning against a stuck belt or a motor that ran out of grease. I heard it 4 times and it lasted about a second or 2 each time. It seems to be coming from under the hood. The only common variable between all of the occurrences is a speed between 5 - 20 mph.
Belt has been replaced recently, when I looked under the hood all pulleys were spinning normally. The only thing I can think of is maybe it's the re-manufactured power steering pump that I put in after the redhead box install or the a/c compressor. When the compressor is running it makes a ticking noise. Maybe it's finally done and the screech is it starting to spin up when it engages the pulley?

The other morning I started my car up and no heat or air would come out of my vents. The night before I had to drive through a blizzard and my car was completely packed with snow. The climate controls function normally, everything is lighting up when i select a button, but no air is coming out of the vents (rear defrost and seat warmers work fine). There is no sound of the blower starting when I turn the air on, hot or cold. I live in Northeast Ohio so we currently have several inches of snow and it's well below freezing outside. I live in an apartment so my car is outside 24/7 between being here and at work. I looked up a bunch of posts on here and other websites to try to figure it out. I ended up taking my cabin filter out and it is completely packed with snow. So i vacuumed out the snow that was left in the cabin filter housing as far as i could reach. I also unpacked as much snow as possible from wheel wells seeing as the HVAC vent goes to there, and the blower still doesn't work.
What I am guessing, which I could be completely wrong, is that the HVAC vent is completely packed with snow and it's not letting the blower turn. I guess my question is does that seem remotely possible or is it something else completely? My climate control doesn't work on the highest setting so I don't think its the relay I read about and my heater has been working fine with no noises or anything and I don't believe it would just go bad out of the blue.

I Have 17400 Miles on my Wagon and After Three Weeks in the Shop I am going to pick up my Car next Monday from the Dealer. I Did not have any Warnings Just Whistling Noise which was coming from under the hood. That was weary Loud Noise. I took my car to the dealer and they told it look like a bad Engine belt. After few days they told me my transmission is bad and needs to be Completely Replaced. I Read so many different stories on this Forum about Transmission Problems and i never had any problem till now.

Okay so 2007 F350 DWR here, I have a driver who hauls loads using the truck and a 25' gooseneck trailer. She's gone through the bullet proofing process at 80K miles, she now has 128K miles. I have a programmer to monitor temps, and do all required maintenance.
With that said, my driver reported last week that when under load and going up hills he got the white spray coming out from under the hood. See pics below, this is never really good of course but I want to believe its not catastrophic. Two weeks prior I changed out the thermostat and upper radiator hose and of course flushed and filled coolant, all was good - no hoses were loose, etc. Driver reports the truck did not overheat at any time.
Both ECT and EOT are within 10-12 degrees of each other, and did not go over 190 for me while driving around town the other day. There are no codes present, I cleaned the engine bay and drove and re-inspected but can't tell where the coolant is coming from as none appears to be leaking. Last note, I have to admit after driving for a day or two I had to fill the degas bottle up about 3/4 gallon of water. My questions is, what is the next step for me in the diagnostic process?

So, at 14k it looks like I have that musty smell coming out of the AC vents. I've seen a TSB on here that addresses it. Hopefully my first trip to the dealership for anything other than an oil change doesn't present me with any other surprises.

I've been hearing this light "slapping" noise coming from under the hood. I think I localized it to the air filter area, but not exactly. The engine and everything seem to be functioning perfectly minus this noise when driving. Could it be the plastic covers?

It's cold and raining quite hard out and I just took my car out to the store and when I pulled into the parking spot a very loud squealing noise began coming from under the hood (sounded like driver side). I turned the car off and restarted and it was still there. I turned it off again and started it and it was gone. I drove the car home without issue and restarted a couple of times with no noise. The car ran great otherwise. What that was? I know very little about cars. It scared the crap out of me--it sounded quite loud--more of a screeching sound.

Over the past few months I have noticed a line running across the front of my hood where the paint is starting to come off. The rest of the hood is starting to look like the clear coat is coming off too. I wax it every few months. This is the only part of the car that is doing this.
I have looked around to see if there is a corrosion warranty or something and cant find anything. Is there anything I can do about it. 2003 VW Passat...

I am having this serious issue with my 2007 gs350 awd, whenever I'm on the highway or any were, the air is contaminated with any odor for example (skunk, garbage, smoke from old car) the smell comes in through the vents, I've changed the cabin air filter and still same problem, how to get it resolved?

I have a 2001 F150 4x4 supercrew XLT 4.6 with 150,000 miles. I have a few things happening in the truck, and although it is still running for now, I would like to get ahead of this before something catastrophic happens, and I don't know if everything is related, or everything is falling apart separately.
1. I have been noticing a burning smell coming from under the hood after driving, every time I drive, but no noticeable leaks, and oil level is fine. I have seen light smoke coming from the exhaust but inconsistently. A mechanic said it was probably the valve cover seals leaking to the manifold, but I would think there would eventually be less oil on the dipstick?
2. When on the gas, over 2200 RPMish, the air and AC switches to defrost. It seems like a vacuum line leak somewhere, but can't find it.
3. Generally, the truck seems sluggish, sometimes unwilling to shift gears or accelerate at freeway speeds. Not sure if its the transmission going out again (had it replaced at 125000), or spark plugs?
