Passat (B6) :: 2006 - Transmission Is Starting To Cut Up?
Jun 18, 2011
I'm currently at 115k miles on my 2.0t automatic 2006 passat. As of last week my transmission is starting to act up. my car has been driven on the highway 90% of its life. the shifts are becoming very hard and it is not shifting at the right revs from time to time, sometimes itll go into 4th gear and chirp the tires.
yesterday the dashboard showed me in 2nd gear at all times when it was obviously shifting . the dash also showed that all the gears were selected along with park, reverse, and sport mode while i was in drive.
the interesting part is that when i drive my car in tiptronic mode, there are no issues with shifting and the shifts are normal, not slamming into gear. the dealer has not looked at the car yet but they said it could be a sensor or a true transmission issue.

My passat transmission is really starting to slip now. I have found a used transmission at a reputable salvage yard with 84,000 on it and its the same trans code and was told it shifted fine before they pulled it. I was just wanting to know what seals i should replace in the new transmission if any. I presume that with it being at a salvage yard all the fluid was drained from it so another question I have is how much transmission fluid should i buy when i do the swap not sure if 5 quarts is enough.

In the last 8 months I'm having a shaking of the car when starting in first gear (manual trans).
I thought it was a loose engine mount - had it checked and one replaced and still the shaking is there.
I notice it is more pronounced when the engine is hot and starting on a decline.
Since I've had this Camry (almost 8 yrs), I've had the clutch changed 2x. First time was just wear and tear. The person who replaced it put the fly wheel on backwards! Drove it for 3 years until it just broke. Replaced by another shop who couldn't believe I got three years out of the bad job.
At any rate, this doesn't feel like a clutch-related issue. No slippage feeling or other issues when moving through the gears at higher speeds. But maybe they did a bad job too?

I have a 4 cylinder 2009 Sonata with an automatic transmission and it does not accelerate smoothly when starting out from idle. A slight touch on the accelerator pedal causes the motor to accelerate hard as though the pedal was pushed down a lot further than "a slight touch". Is this normal or should this car accelerate smoothly? I am wondering if there is a common problem with either the accelerator pedal sensor or maybe with the throttle servo.

Every time i put gas into the car, it always takes a couple tries to start it back up. I guess the main question is why? No matter how full the tank is or how empty it is, every time gas goes into it the car won't start right away. I usually try once, then have to wait another 30 sec and try again, then it will start. So my question is why does it have trouble starting after I put gas in it?

I have had my 06 Passat 2.0t into the dealer twice and they have been unable to resolve a rough shift issue between 1st and 2nd. The first time they replaced the camshaft and cam follower (which makes no sense to me), the second time they said they did a software update.
I was under the impression that the software update to fix the rough shift removed the gear indicator in the MFD, but mine is still there. Each time when I get it back the transmission is much smoother for a couple days but progressively gets worse to the point I don't like driving my car (which I loved driving before this issue started).
I have read about a TSB being issued that advised a software update and the replacement of the valve body to resolve this, but I can't find the number for it.

I have a 2006 Passat that I love but it's been doing something since it was new that has finally bothered me enough to do something about it. When the automatic transmission upshifts from 1st to 2nd, it feels really jerky - I don't know how else to describe it. It's like it surges and other times feels chunky. It seems worse after the car has sat overnight or during the day at work however it still does it even after being warmed up - just not as severely.
I called my VW dealership and spoke with a service rep and he suggested allowing the car to warm up for a few minutes before driving to let the transmission fluid 'pump' or something - not exactly confidence inspiring and even if that worked, not a good solution. The good news is that it doesn't work any better after doing that so I suspect something is actually wrong and hoping they will find it before it gets worse. I have an oil change this Thursday but based on my discussion with the service manager, I don't know that I am going to get very far with them.

My wife's 2007 Camry has starting to clunk. Best I can tell so far, I have to get up to a reasonable speed(maybe 40 mph or so). When the speed comes down i get a 'clunk'.
It seems to to happen at about 27mph. And seems consistent at that speed. Doesn't matter whether I'm braking or let it coast down. Tried soft & moderately hard braking. I don't think it is happening if I put the selector in '4' but I don't have a lot of data on that yet.
Other than that, up shifting and downshifting seems pretty smooth and the way it always has been. But then I rarely drive this car.
When does the lockup disengage? I was wondering if that is it. Or some downshift issue?.
One other thing. I took the car in for the excessive oil consumption test about 2 weeks ago. I assume that they just topped it up and put those seals on the oil filler & dipstick. That there shouldn't be anything they did during that that could be related.
Checked the trans fluid this evening. Level and color seem OK.

Usually in the morning after starting the car, when I put the car into reverse the car stalls. I start it up again and it works fine. It has been doing this for a few months. When I went to get oil change they said I needed to replace battery so I did. Problem is still there. It has done this twice when I try to take off from a red light. I have no check engine lights either. My car has 105,000 miles but cannot really afford to buy a new car at the moment.

From time to time, and always unpredictably, the transmission acts up. When starting from a stop the car will not accelerate normally, putting me in jeopardy. Also, shifting automatically is a problem.
I tried shifting through the gears and got mixed and unacceptable shifting. Depressing the accelerator only increases the RPM, the speed hardly at all.
Is this a problem in the transmission or in some electrical control of the transmission?

Have a 2004 GMC 4x4 extended cab light-duty Sierra 2500 with about 40 K miles. When attempting to start and drive the pick-up after the pick-up has been parked for a few weeks, the vehicle has to idle for perhaps 1 minute before the automatic transmission will start the move the vehicle. Also have similar 1991 GMC pick-up that will engage almost immediately after starting the vehicle, despite having been parked for a similar length of time. Did not seem to notice on 2004 when the vehicle was new, but, has become more apparent during the last year. GMC maintenance and repair have no explanation. Once the 2004 is warmed-up and driven, no problem - the transmission kicks-in immediately; but, not after being parked for any extended length of time. So what gives here?

2010 STX with 4 speed (4r75E)... Yesterday morning when I was almost at work(20 minute drive) I went to accelerate from a stop sign and my truck acted like it was in neutral. Once the rpm's dropped to just above idle speed the transmission caught and I was able to accelerate as normal. I guess I didn't think much of it until I was coming home from work, again about 20 minutes of driving, when I was accelerating while turning left from a stop sign. Halfway through the turn my rpm's shot up to about 5000 and it was acting as if I were in neutral again. Just as before, when the rpms dropped to just above idle, the transmission reengaged and everything was normal.
I decided to take my wife's van to Walmart and grabbed a bottle of lucas oil "transmission fix". I figured it might buy me a little time before I am able to get it to a shop for diagnosis. I used a suction pump to remove approx. 24 oz. of tranny fluid through the dipstick tube. I then added the lucas oil "tranny fix" (24 oz. bottle). I inspected the fluid that I removed. It looks pretty dirty. I would say that it was a nontransparent brown color with a slight red tint. when poured onto a paper towel it still looked brown. It didn't smell burnt at all. I checked the fluid level twice before I added the lucas oil, and twice after. Both times the fluid level was at the full mark (fluid at normal operating temp, with vehicle in park after shifting through all gears).
Fast forward to today and I was able to drive from my current house to my new house(being built) which was about 10 minutes away. I had no issues at all with the transmission. after being at the new house for about an hour and a half I came back home with no issues. about 30 minutes after returning home I headed back out again to run some errands. About 15 minutes into the drive my transmission slipped again as I was making a right turn into the barber's shop parking lot. after about an hour at the barber shop I headed for home again. As before everything was fine for about the first 15 minutes until I tried to make a right turn after sitting at a red light. the transmission slipped as described before, but it did it twice this time in the same turn. Nothing happened after that within the last 5 minutes of driving home.
The slipping only seems to happen when accelerating from a dead stop or from an extremely slow speed(under 5 mph). At highway speeds the transmission down shifts and upshifts just like it always has. My truck has 78,800 miles on it and has never shown any previous signs of transmission issues other than a leaky dipstick tube that I replaced about 3 years ago.
My father had a 94 Taurus that had similar symptoms in the past and it ended up needing new clutch disks and was rebuilt. I'm hoping for that rather than a new or reman'd tranny!

Automatic transmissions! I have a 90 F250 4x 7.5 and E4OD. I have been chasing electrical gremlins, and I'm not sure if these problems are related or not. Symptoms: When starting off in drive, it feels very sluggish, as if it is starting in second gear. Manually putting in first works. When left in drive it will drop all the way into fourth at 20-25 mph. If left in drive, when you turn a corner and step into the throttle the trans will rapidly shift up and down causing a surging effect. Manually moving the shift down into second stops this. I have been considering swapping the PCM from an 89 7.5 E4OD parts truck I have, to see if that cures any of the problems.

I am not the original owner of this 1990 E250 cargo van with a 302 in it. I am trying to troubleshoot this shudder I am having. It only happens when I am just starting off from a stop. Every other place the tranny runs and shifts great. I trying to find a starting point and after reading a bunch in a bunch of different places, I am confused as to the tranny I have or even had.
It has in big bold letters METRIC on the bottom of the pan. It also has Automatic Overdrive and Ford on the bottom of the pan also. It is a 14 bolt pan with the two rear corners of the pan chamfered off. I see now it is DEFINITELY the AOD installed and NOT the AODE. The thing is my steering column is labeled 1 D and OD. That is a 3 spd overdrive to me. What the heck is going on? How can I tell what the tranny was that came out of the van?
When I look under the van at the shift linkage, you can definitely tell the linkage is colored red which to me looks like somebody has been down there playing around. Is it possible to put a AOD into this van with the steering column the way it is? Could this be a reason for my early shudder at starting off from a stop? Once I put my foot in it or get moving at a quicker pace, the shudder goes away. Something is not right with the way this tranny is set up. I am not even sure where to start.

I bought a 95 Explorer with a known bad transmission, rebuilt it (broken band and chipped intermediate apply piston), put it back in, and now it's acting odd.
It wants to start in third. I can manually start it in second (first rarely works), shift it to drive at about 30, and it's fine. It shifts into OD, locks the TC, and when given a bit of gas kicks down to second. It downshifts during deceleration, but once I come to a complete stop, it'll try to start in third again. The only transmission code it's giving is for incorrect first gear ratio, there is an off and on engine code for the EGR pressure sensor as well.

Have a 1997 Ford Aerostar van 4.0 L v-6 RWD 119,754 miles. Auto Transmission starting to slip alot in overdrive. Fluid and filter changes at 86,119miles. Have a Haynes Repair manual that only cover vehicles to 1996... Talks about the transmissions A4LD 4-Speed that uses electronic controls integrated into the on-board EEC-IV system.. Rather that covers my 1997 I don't know. Fluid looks very clean on dipstick. Crawled under van.... On side of transmission #P97GT7006BBR 750Nn. Took to a national brand Transmission chain.... Said trans overdrive wearing out. Anything else I can check or am i getting ripped off ?

So a couple months ago I had a transmission problem. It shifts high and hard all times and after the "od" light gets going (after it gets warm), the transmission slips (like riding clutch) when starting from a stop. If I went from drive to 1st gear with the selector and back, it cleared the slipping problem for a bit. I did an oil/filter change and about 50 miles later the truck is running fine, no issues. One day I hopped in it to go to work and it was like nothing ever happened. Fast forward 1,500 miles later. I start to notice the transmission is subtly shifting weird, like a small jerk when shifting. It gets worse over 50 miles and now I am back to the above problem. Is there a way this could be a sensor or solenoid problem? I never heard of a transmission correcting an issue then starting at it again so much later.
I don't like fixing or working on an issue unless I am at least 95% sure what the problem is. I also don't have $2k to plop down on a repair at the moment. Would it be worth it to take this to a dealership and see what trouble codes I am getting? I would try a transmission shop but it's not guaranteed they will have the test equipment to check a ford transmission. Also a friend said that AutoZone and other stores can't check transmission codes. So what's the best option here?

I have a new to me 2000 F250 7.3 diesel with automatic. Truck has 185K miles and tranny is starting to slip occasionally. Do these trucks come with a OEM tranny cooler or do I need to add or upgrade the OEM one. Someone also told that there is something called "bulletproofing" the tranny on these trucks. BTW, what would be a reasonable cost to have a two wheel drive auto tranny done on my truck?
