On my 2006 Passat, the steering wheel is not aligned (at 12 o'clock) when I'm driving straight. It is roughly at 11 o'clock position, maybe a little less. The dealership claims this will be solved with a front end wheel alignment. The car drives straight as an arrow with hands off the steering wheel so I tend to wonder.
Will a wheel alignment fix this? Or could it be something else?
After my steering wheel replaced I've noticed that new wheel is not centered. I was way too much to the right when driving straight, so I went back to dealer and ask him to fix it. He said that he fixed it and even recalibrated steering wheel (or something) and should be OK. So here is my question. The wheel is now a bit to much to the left (see picture). Do you think it is acceptable (within the specs) and it cannot be adjusted better? Should I go back and complain or I am just to much paranoiac.
View 23 RepliesI have a 2014 FX4 Ecoboost with 2K miles. While driving in a straight line on smooth roadway I feel a slight 'clunk' in the steering wheel. Feels a bit like slack or something. It only happens when the steering wheel is in perfectly neutral position ( straight up) with no turn to either side. Oddly I feel it more when I hold the steering wheel in the lower half as opposed to the upper side. Could it be 4X4 play or splines or loose something in chassis?
View 14 RepliesGot an issues with my 02 Santa Fe. Shaky steering wheel at all speeds during straight driving more than in turns. 130k miles on the vehicle.
The tires are worn, and need replacing. No missing wheel weights that I saw. No issues with braking.
At slow speeds it feels like the front end is swaying back and forth. I am planning to have the tires replaced, but I feel that this is more than just the tires.
I suspect ball joints / tie rods are the culprit. Is there a good way to check these components from home verses going to a shop and having them diagnose the issue.
With ball joints / tie rods, I am confident that I can change them on my own.
1994 Chevrolet silverado 2WD 350/V8 ... I've been too focused on the loose steering and now there is a grinding noise feel on the steering wheel when I'm driving straight and above 20 mph. I jacked up the front end of the truck and after wiggling the front tires at 12:00 and 6:00, I can feel a slight movement at both front wheels. Is it a telltale sign the wheel bearings has failed. Note that I am deaf and can't hear any growling/grinding but I certainly can feel the grinding feel on my steering wheel. Wheel bearings it is?
View 19 RepliesI have a 2010 GTI 2 door. I noticed that my steering wheel is not aligned and is slightly cocked to the left and it is driving me crazy! I had the car to dealer twice and they did a front end alignment but I still has not fixed the problem. I am thinking someone on the assembly line put the steering wheel on a few degrees off on the shaft spline. I also have a 4 door 2010 GTI 4 door and it is perfect.
View 24 RepliesMy car has a little bit of a shimmy between 65 and 80, can feel it more when changing lanes slowly, after 80 slows down to almost nothing and by 100 is gone. Road force and high speed balanced, new set of tires (Mich. PS2) still does it. One more detail, the steering wheels is slightly tilted to the left when driving straight, anything to do with this? I'm suspecting the rotors too, but I only have 3,400 miles on my car.
View 8 RepliesI just got new rotiform BLQ rims and nexen tires. I have the hub rings and the setup was balanced and aligned (double checked).
Before this I had 3 bent TSW rims and got a pretty bad shake in the wheel around 65-70 mph. Before or after that speed everything is smooth now.
Why would this shake still occur.
I just noticed this, this weekend, sitting in GTI and Golf. I checked carefully, and indeed it feels like I'm not sitting directly in line with the steering column/wheel. It's not a huge issue, but just a little strange, that they wouldn't match them up straight?

View 17 RepliesI noticed that my steering wheel was a bit to the right when I drive straight so I had an alignment done. After the alignment the problem was not solved so I went to Hyundai again to redo the alignment. They told me that they redid it and also that my tires are worn unevenly so they rotated them. My problem is still not fixed! I called Hyundai yesterday and they insist saying that alignment is good and the problem are the tires. To me that don't make sense cause even with my summer tires the problem is there.
View 23 RepliesI can't drive my 2013 ES300h straight (on a straight & level road) with out turning the steering wheel to the right, then to the left (over & over again) . To be clear, I do not have to turn the wheel much at all but it has to be turned to keep it straight. I had Lexus do a 4 wheel alignment yesterday and it did not work at all. Is this normal ?
View 9 RepliesThe leather on my steering wheel was peeling off and I brought it up to the dealer and out of their goodwill, they decided to replace it with a completely new one. Props to the dealer. However this is where all the problems start to occur. I drop off the car This past Sunday and pick up a loaner. I get a call the next day saying my car is ready. So I get there and everything seems good.
There's an open road that I like to take home but this is where I noticed something weird. When my steering wheel was level, the car was veering right.. I had to tilt the steering wheel a little left to go straight . I call the dealership right away and they tell me to bring it back. So I do that and pick up another loaner.
Following day , I go back to the dealership and they tell me they fixed the alignment. Now everything is good! I was yet again wrong. When I got home, I noticed my steering wheel was weird.
So taking the car back tomorrow to get this fixed! Still props to the dealer for giving me a brand new steering wheel..
Took delivery of car and alignment is way off. Steering wheel is turned left when car is straight. The dealership is trying to charger me for a alignment. Car has 2500 miles on it and came from factory this way.

View 3 RepliesI bought 2006 Prius which clearly was involved in accident, though it was small collision in slow traffic but on my way home from seller it was clear this was something more serious when on motorway at 70mph steering wheel started vibrating when in straight direction, it disappeared on any little turn left or right. Ok, maybe just ball joint got loose.... but not, today I've lifted front and found little knocking sound in few positions when turning the wheels (L-R). Sound is coming from rack & pinion unit. Anyone removed, disassembled and successfully assembled it? My plan is to check with dealer what is the cost of replacement (quite expensive for gen I, expect it to be same for gen II) alternatively can get one from scrap yard but need to find the calibration procedure first. BTW did read codes as follow, it's clear after reset... so far.

I have a click sound and slight click feel in my steering wheel. This happens when I am sitting still with the wheel straight, and i just slightly rock the steering wheel back and forth. If i turn the wheel a full turn left or right then rock the steering wheel back and forth I don't get the sound or feeling. Also if I am cruising down the road and rock the wheel back and forth slightly I don't get it.
This is something between the steering wheel and the firewall. I checked all steering shafts and all suspension from the firewall down to the wheels. So that at least make me feel better that I am not dealing with one of those steering shafts or a suspension repair.
I had a friend do an alignment on my truck yesterday. Afterward, we tried to center the wheel the best we could in the shop. But when I drove it home I noticed that when going straight, the steering wheel is ever-so-slightly turned to the right. Is there and easy way to adjust this without me going back to the guys' shop and bugging him again? I know the alignment is dead nuts, but the wheel is just a tad off.
View 4 RepliesJust recently bought a 2005 prius. It had a few issues that I have been addressing.
Last issue is that the steering wheel has a very slight bind/sticking in the straight ahead position. Very slight steering corrections needed when driving straight down the road are annoying because of this bind/sticking. Steering is smooth and bind free through the entire range of left to right travel, except for straight ahead (center).
Does the steering gear have oil or grease that is replaceable? If so, what id the procedure?
The steering wheel on our Prius is not centered when the vehicle is on a flat road going straight.
