Passat (B6) :: 2006 - Safe To Drive With Broken Exhaust?
Jun 3, 2013
The exhaust pipe on my 2006 Passat broke towards the front where it comes down from the engine bay. Am I going to mess it up or hurt anything by driving it this way temporarily (1 day at most) or is it just going to be loud and a little sluggish?

got in the car this morning, it revved a little high and now sounds like an air pump is constantly going. You don't hear it as much when you drive but when stopped and especially when you open the hood, its like a compressor is going. It seems to be coming from the back end of the air intake tubing...on the passenger side, not near the intake itself.

On the way to an appointment an big noise started, like the exhaust was broken. See picture, how can I fix it, pull the part but do not see how the portion that got loose is hold in place buy that metal plate. Or do I need to tale it to the dealer.
Notice that there is no a lot of welding to hold it in place, that is amazing. It looks that it should be weld on the outside to avoid this problem.

So the flexpipe on my exhaust is cracked and completely broken, so my passat sounds like a Mack truck. I've been looking into getting it fixed and I've been told i need to buy an entire new down pipe. Should i attempt to just get it fixed or buy a new down pipe.

Just returning home from one week business trip envisioning a quit and relaxing weekend...First thing I did was stepping in my car on the airport parking lot driving a screw into my tire.... That already set my Saturday morning schedule.Bright and early went to my tire dealer of choice. They flat out said it was unsafe to fix that tire and also said they do not have the VW Tiguan's OEM Pirelli Scorpion Zero in their portfolio recommending to go to my VW dealer and get a new tire. As they did not try to sell me one of their tires (they were not busy) it convinced me that they were telling the truth.
Half an hour later arriving at my VW dealer.hey simply plugged the hole in my tire. While they had concerns about the tire holding air when plugged they were not concerned about the safety when driving the tire once it's confirmed that it holds up air. While some websites (Tire-Rack) say that a tire NOT fixed inside and outside is NOT the safe way to do so my tire was only fixed from the outside not taking it of the rim. As you can see on the pictures the screw was not really in the middle / drive tread. But somewhat close to the outside.
What do the experts among you say. Is this an accident to happen ? Should I just get one new tire (The other tire of the axle has 10400 miles driven / not quite sure if I have to replace the whole axle )
What I want to avoid is a tire exploding at highway speeds. Worst case would be while pulling my teardrop trailer.

I have a 97 Expedition with the 5.4 engine and 160k miles. Recently while having other work done I was told that I had an exhaust manifold leak due to broken rusted bolts.

My wife's 97 f150 4x4 had an exhaust leak on the passenger side. 7 out of the 8 bolts holding the manifold on are snapped off. 4 of them are snapped off 1/8" below the top of the hole on the cylinder head . I am I unable to get a drill in to drill these out. The other 3 I've tried welding a nut on these but they won't budge and I wring the nuts off. If I have to pull the head(something I don't want to do)can I just pull that 1 head or do I have to tear the intake and everything off?

Is my car relavtively safe to drive?
I just took my car (1984 Toy Corolla DX) to the mechanic and the right front strut fell from its mount. The mechanic lowered the vehicle and reinserted the strut. I drove it home, ever-so-cautiously. Is the car safe to drive for emergency trips (pay bills, buy groceries) until I can get it fixed next month?

I'm driving a 2008 Highlander, but this question applies to almost any car, I think. On a couple of occasions the Highlander has lost power, and I've lost braking and steering ability. Each time this happened I was going at slow speeds and was able to stop without a nasty problem then restart the car. But what if this happens and I really need to brake? Three related questions:
(a) Are power brakes going to stop the Highlander even when it has lost power?
(b) If not, will the parking/emergency brake be useful?
(c) If the answers to (a) and (b) are "No", what should I do?
Of course, I'd love to know why Highlander lost power, but my Toyota dealer was not able to replicate the problem, even after driving the SUV 100+ miles (the two occasions it happened to me were separated by about 5000 miles of driving).

I replaced all my shock and the last one front passenger side gave me fits. The lower mounting bolt stripped and I am unable to secure the shock. My question is..is it safe to drive around without the front shock to get over to the parts house? I plan to use back roads and low speeds. 20 mile round trip.

So after eight years my Warn premium hubs have taken a crap and developed major play internally. After speaking to Warn warrenty department and sending videos they will replace them according to the lifetime limited warranty. Problem is they sill not send out new ones until they receive the old ones, so I was told from time i remove mine and send them back and get the new ones it will be two weeks maybe a few days more, there is no snow in the extended forcast and im wondering what damage could occur with me funning the truck everday to work etc with the stub shafts just hanging there?

I bought a 2006 Passat 2 years ago in august. Certified pre-owned around 37k miles. Had no problems. 2 weeks ago I started the car and it sounded louder than normal. Got up to 25 mph and the engine oil pressure light came on. I got the car towed to linden NJ VW. They said the chain for the oil pump broke and was lying in my oil pan. Oh, and I am 21 miles past my warranty! they said it would cost around $3000 to fix. So I started calling people, vwoa and the place I bought the car. Now they made me round up all my old service info. But I am waiting for the service manager to get back On Tues so he can review it before they break down the engine to figure out why the chain broke( because no one can believe that the chain just broke ). Based on what they find they said they "may" contribute "some" money!!

So i've been searching for ways to remove the bumper/door chrome trim to change to black but cannot find anything about the b5 or 5.5. What i'm trying to do is get the chrome to black but cannot figure out a safe way to remove them to either wrap in black vinyl, paint or just replace with black strips. I'm not trying to completely remove them just get the chrome to black. Its an 03

OK, I have another question. How do I safely remove the steering wheel from my '99 Passat? I have never removed a wheel with an airbag and wouldn't like to experience one blowing up in my face. I have a steering wheel removal kit that works on most cars. Hopefully I won't need and proprietary VW tools for this. I need to replace my turn-signal arm and steering column cover.

I unhooked the battery for about an hour. I hooked it back up. I started the car put the selector into drive. CLUNK. Disengaged the parking brake. Drove. It turns out when I shifted to D it went straight to third and stayed there. I turned off the car, restarted it. Still stuck in third. Drove a few miles. Restarted it. No more issues. My guess the tranny went into safe mode, but why?

Broken exhaust studs and decided to get the Banks system. I haven't run across any problems with them in the old threads. Are you happy with your headers and exhaust now that it's been on a while?
