Passat (B6) :: 2006 2.0t - Audible Whirring Noise After Parked For A While
Dec 13, 2007
I just purchased my vw used with 28,000 miles on it. After its been parked for a while, I open the drivers side door and an audible whirring noise coming from somewhere in the car goes off, what is this noise coming from?

So, last night I was driving with radio off and a "whirring/fan" sound was audible in the rear of my 2002 SC430 - a sound that I have never heard. The sound seemed to resonate from the driver side, access panel (which I believe holds fuses and other systems for roof). After the vehicle was stopped and restarted the sound continued. Now today, I insert the key into the ignition - no sound; turn to accessory - sound is audible; started vehicle and did not hear sound. Second time I repeated and sound was heard; started and did not hear sound, Third time I repeated and no sound heard in accessory start position. What the heck is this? Any diagram of the trunk and what components are housed in the center bay? Does this vehicle have any auto-leveling function that activates?

I parked the little dear in the garage about 9:30 last night. I went into the garage this morning around 6:30 and I noticed how still and quiet it seemed. I then opened the garage door and went outside for a few minutes. When I came back in, I hear a low whirring sound. I went back outside to listen, but it was definitely coming from the Prius, perhaps near the back, underneath.
The hatch was open; I closed it, but the sound didn't change. The fob was in the house, and I didn't open the driver door, so it wasn't the brake pump. It lasted at least 2-3 minutes, at which time I was too bored to continue listening, and I went back to weeding and watering.

I ventured into the garage late last night and heard a whirring noise like an electric motor coming from my Prius. I didn't have my smart key with me. I checked the doors to see if any were ajar. The whirring kept going. After a few minutes, it stopped.

Went down to my garage after the Prius had been off for at least 5 hours and heard a whirring kind of like a fan in the back half of the vehicle. I had never heard this before and it went on for at least 5 minutes then quit. My garage was probably around 60 degrees for most of that time, fwiw. Seems like the area of the battery fan but why would that need to run?

I've had a loud annoying whirring noise on something connected to my 2009 GLS serpentine belt. Initially, Hyundai said it was the alternator... just recently they said it's the power steering pump. Some friends say it's a bearing. Your guess is as good as mine!
If I replace both the pump and alternator on my own, I'll save more money then letting Hyundai replace one. I haven't seen that many DIY changes on the pump though. I usually don't deal with parts & fluids.

2007 Accent with 86k miles. It's not very noisy but sounds a bit sick. It seems to shift fine.
I checked engine oil and the manual transaxle oil. Do I need a new clutch?

There's something that sounds like an electric motor whirring for a few seconds when I open the door on my 2009 Passat Wagon after it's sat overnight. (I'm not sure if it does it other times as well, I've not really noticed). It's not really annoying, and I don't think anything is broken or malfunctioning. I'm just curious what that motor is doing.

Question to everyone who drives an Azera out there. This is regarding the 3.8 V6 engine.Does your engine make a whirring noise at around 2000 rpm? Sounds almost like a supercharger whine, starts at around 1800 rpm and continues up to the low 2000 rpm's. It's not a loud noise, only audible with low volume music or none at all.

I'm bringing my 6MT 2.0T in tomorrow, for 10K service, installation of the Euro-cupholder and to have them investigate a sound I first noticed last week. For lack of a better description, it's a "whirring" noise that is exactly proportional to speed (higher pitched at higher speeds). I'm guessing that it's either related to the clutch or the drive shaft.
I can't hear it well with the windows open. It seems to emanate from under the stick-shift. It is audible either in gear or not. (And it seems to be getting slightly worse each day).....

I have a 2000 VW Passat 1.8T Automatic. During a cold start, I notice a rather loud noise like a motor whirring that lasts for approximately 30 seconds. My RPMs also run about 200 higher than idle during this time. After the 30 secs the noise goes away (sounds like this motor powers down) and the RPMs return to normal.
It doesn't happen every time I start the car, just when it has been sitting for more than 4-5 hours or overnight. What this is and what if anything I should do?

In the last few days there has been an intermittent high pitched whirring noise coming from the rear undercarriage of my 2009 Elantra with automatic transmission, at least it seems where it is more pronounced on the outside of the vehicle. The pitch is unaffected by acceleration or climate control changes. It just comes and goes at random. The temperature here has dropped considerably in the last week or so and seems to have started since then.

2006 Toyota Matrix 60k, brake noise when car is off and parked. I hear a noise when I push the brake pedal. It happens whenever I press the brake pedal. I hear it when the car is on, or even if the car is off. It is a squeaking noise that is coming from outside the car. When I open the door the noise is louder. I only hear the noise when I press the brake pedal.

After parking the car in the garage this afternoon I heard this motor like noise cycling on and off from the rear of the car. It was real faint but definitely noticeable. It lasted perhaps 10 - 15 minutes before quitting. What it could be?

I just bought a b5.5 Passat 5-speed glx... fully loaded, a nice package. It has 67k. I just did the timing belt, valve cover gaskets, and cam tensioner adjuster gaskets. I park on a slanted driveway so the car sits on an angle all night. Only when i start up first in the morning, it makes the noise as if the oil isn't rushing up through the engine all the way, and makes the clicking noise in the motor..but any other startup throughout the day is fine.
Only the first in the am. you guys think its just because i park on a hill type driveway? What else it could be.. After I start driving for like 10 minutes, I also hear like a little whining/vacuum noise more noticeably in first gear, idk if that has anything to do with it? I haven't checked the oil level since i got the car back from the shop, but i know i should maybe they forgot to add an extra quart or something.

I owned a 99 f250 a little while ago. Just bought a 2006 crewcab F150 xlt about 2 months ago, and for the past month there has been this unusual grinding or whirring like noise coming from the front passenger side wheel.
I took it to the mechanic and he found a bad wheel bearing on drivers side and replaced it but that wasn't the issue. He could hear the noise but wasn't able to figure out what the actual issue was.
The noise only happens when my foot is on the throttle. (not when coasting) and i also just discovered that it doesn't make any noise at all when put in 4x4.

I have a two door hatchback (2010) and I love it! Simple as it is, I just can't complain. I think it is fun to drive, and easy on the fuel budget. But I digress. Because I am new to these cars, I am learning about the noises it makes and if they are normal or not. My question is this:
When driving around with the A/C on, I notice - as I come from any speed to a stop - that the A/C pump becomes audible and seems to "Wind Down." I can hear a little "whirring" or "groaning" sound which goes away (dies down) after a moment. It isn't terrible, and maybe it is normal. I just don't know! If it is not a ordinary operating noise, then to the shop we go! Also, I am going to install an aftermarket Cruise Control.

Do the parking brake make an audible sound when engaged disengaged. I noticed this for the first time but only while the drivers door was open. Sound like a motor running for about 3 seconds when you turn the break on and off. Is this normal?

2014 Passat 1.8T Gen III manual... Experiencing an audible rumbling with vibration at the front/mid of vehicle under specific circumstances.
*93 octane tune (high torque at low rpm)
*barely perceptible in 3rd, but more in 4th and very much in 5th
*about 1700-2200 rpm ONLY when deep into boost - as soon as I even slightly reduce torque, it goes away
*seems to be related to engine firing frequency (i.e., 2000 rpm = 66Hz firing frequency...still audible and tactile at same time)
*not related to road speed
*sweeping through problem area in 1st or 2nd goes too fast to develop the rumble.
Hypotheses:
*half shaft shake (torque related dynamic runout)
*engine mount/trans mount groundout from torque reaction
*exhaust system ground out due to torque reaction.
It doesn't feel like a misfire, not slipping clutch. I would hate to have to get a 91 octane tune or just avoid the sweet torque at 2k!

I just picked up my first newer vw this past friday, i love the cae but have noticed when i shift from 1st to 2nd pretty much at any RPM generally between 2.5k and 4k i have an audible noise almost what i want to call a grind more distinct than any other gear theres no resistance and it seems to be working just fine, the noise is not there downshifting from 3rd to 2nd i was just wondering is this something i should be worried about or is this normal for the car? currently at 38k
