View 2 RepliesI've got a 99 1.8t, and every once in awhile when the turbo starts spooling I hear a fluttering, not sure how to describe it. sort of like when your valves run low on oil and you can hear em tick? Like something is fluttering in the turbo when its spooling, instead of just a steady sucking of air.
View 2 RepliesWell I just put a junkyard motor in my cousins 06 passat. Fired it up today runs great and runs smooth. The only thing that concerns me is the top end makes some noise. Is this normal for this direct injected engine? Sound like its coming from the injector area and the injection pump......
View 2 RepliesWhen I started the V^ Passat today it made a fluttering/imitation purring kind of sound...not re-assuring at all. What it could indicate? It only lasted a second then fadded out and ran fine.
maybe a belt tensioner or oil pressure regulator or something like that getting up to snuf?
Turbo leaking? Is it costly to fix? I have a 2002 Passat, V-4 engine. I just took it in to get my oil changed and the mechanic told me that there's turbo leak. I have also been experiencing a weird siren like noise when I drive and the car feels like it's struggling whenever I go over 40 mph and or driving up a steep hill.
View 8 RepliesI just bought a forge 007 and an apr chip. When i installed the DV i ran it in reverse and am getting a fluttering noise.... i'm running the yellow spring which should be right for a chipped car.
View 6 RepliesWhenever I have my fan on speed 1 or 2, it makes this fluttering noise that comes from the passenger floor cabinet. I stuck my head under there while it was on and was able to confirm that it's coming from the fan that's located under the glove box.
I'm thinking about taking the fan out to dissemble it and try to figure out what's making the noise. It almost sounds like there's a leaf or something stuck inside rubbing against the fan.
I have a 2011 GTI, with an apr chip and apr intake stage 1. Car is brand new 4000 miles
When hitting boost in 3rd-6th gear i hear a fluttering sound between 3500rpm and 5000rpm after 5000rpm the sound either dissipates or is drowned out by the motor.
I've done a lot of research around this sound and i havent been able to find a certain answer, it could be compression surge (i wouldn't see why), a leaky DV ( also cant see why because the 2011 has the new revision D piston actuated DV), A fluttering wastegate.
Sage 1 apr chip and stage 1 apr intake...
My Vibe (manual trans) started making a weird chattering/fluttering noise in 4th gear a couple of weeks ago, so I took it in (mileage around 160k). The noise was similar to the one it was making two years ago when the transmission tore itself to shreds and the shop did a full rebuild, so I was somewhat concerned about taking it in before I was stranded on the road somewhere. It took several days to find the problem, but apparently a balance shaft moved and chipped some teeth, and that somehow affected the trans in 3rd and 4th gears.
Now when they were explaining this I was trying to calm a screaming baby, so I wasn't really paying attention to the explanation, but I wanted to verify that this could happen and that I really do need yet another rebuild, this time with a new balance shaft. He's cutting me a break (this rebuild is significantly cheaper than the last one).
All this said, I really do trust my mechanic, but am really considering letting go of this curse of a car. I've now paid for it's value 1.5 times over the last two years. While the mechanic assures me this trans is bulletproof, two incidents in as many years makes me think otherwise. A quick google search doesn't allay my fears either...
With only 356k miles on my 06, I'm now getting a sudden drop/loss of power at high RPM. At about 80mph on flat land (or about 60mph up hill) if I try to accelerate the power drops off as a fluttering sound starts (not engine knock). The fluttering sounds like 6 inches of celophane tape flapping in the wind at highway speeds.
I just cleaned my K&N air filter, but the plugs, injectors and fuel pump are original. I ran 1 can of injector cleaner (SeaFoam from O'Reilly) with little to no improvement. I'm guessing it's the fuel pump/pressure, since it runs fine at lower RPM, with no loss of mpg or power (still 50mpg average). I know the fuel pump is in the tank ($400 in parts alone). I'll see if I can measure the rail pressure with Torque and my CANBUS scanner.
We are original owners of a 2004 Prius with 165K miles. We've taken excellent care of what has been a great family car. A couple of months ago, we got a check engine light associated with a catalytic converter error. We first replaced the oxygen sensor, which temporarily eliminated the error light, but the car really loses power, especially when a load is placed on it going up hill. The power loss is associated with a fluttering noise coming from within the engine and the battery display showing that it is not charging sufficiently.
We took it back to the dealer and they replaced the exhaust manifold gasket and suggested we replace the catalytic converter (> $2000) but also recommended a local exhaust specialist who could replace the catalytic converter for much less. The exhaust shop examined the car and told us the catalytic converter was fine and did not need replacement. There are no more error codes, and the dealership and their service department shows no interest in repairing our car.
When I apply the brakes on and off while in park, I hear a "fluttering squeaking" noise. I examined the brake pads and calipers, and everything seems to be fine. I greased up all the brake hardware and no luck.
Also, I have a popping noise while making turns while I am not braking. I really doubt there is any connection with the brakes? I recently went testing in a parking lot, and while slightly turning from left to right I noticed the popping constantly. Keep in mind no brakes were applied.
Last year the dealer replaced the brake actuator and all arms were replaced. BTW, I am past my extended 100K warranty!!
I have a 2011 RAV4 with 122,000 miles. For the last few months I have heard a fluttering noise coming from the engine compartment, usually at in-town speeds when I step on the accelerator gently, for example to maintain speed on an incline. What could this be?
View 3 RepliesNew to the board- sold my b6 passat for '12 GTI manual.
Its been a few years since i've owned a stick so I'm not sure if this noise is normal or just because the car as 100 miles on it OR just because I'm a freak when it comes to hearing every little noise.
But when i'm say in 5th or 6th gear on the highway and give it some gas I hears some noise like a fluttering vibration noise for a second or two and then it goes away? It sounds like its coming from right underneath me. Its not a huge deal but on my first brand new car, I'd rather just have someone tell me its normal or if it needs to be fixed or a bolt tightened or something.
Noticed a slight whining, fluttering-like noise when accelerating? Faint but it has an annoying tone. Seems to come from driver side but not sure it can't be heard on passenger.
View 7 RepliesI just bought a 2010 F150 XLT XTR SuperCab 4X4 with a 4.6L 3V engine. I had a 2003 5.4L and a 2004 V10 before and this new engine seems to be nosier then the older ones I've had. It's a ticking/fluttering type noise I here when I'm standing outside the truck while it is idling. Is it normal for these newer 3V engines to make this noise? My wife has a 2009 Hyundai Santefe and it makes a similar noise just not as loud. Does the 5.4L make a similar noise also?
View 12 RepliesWhen the engine is fully warmed up no heater on, after driving about 7-8 miles in city my engine would make a fluttering/tapping noise between 1900-2700rpm at 5-30mph during light acceleration. its rotational noise definitely from engine. noise is light, to hear it all windows has to be up. noise can be heard when powerbraking as well
i had taken it to hayward toyota, dublin toyota and fremont toyota total about 4-5 times. some would lie to my face saying they cant hear the noise, some would say its normal. i used to be a mechanic now im a service advisor at nissan. always had confident in toyota bought 2 of them at the end of 2013 before i started working at nissan.
I had my shopforeman looked at it couldnt figure it out. had my master tech looked at it couldnt figure it out. both informed me this has to be looked at by a toyota mechanic to see if this is an issue they had ran into before or call a toyota engineer.
So my CEL is on. My turbo seems like it's constantly on, there doesn't seem to be any boost, and lowered power. So I have been wondering what this could be.
View 10 RepliesIs it bad if there is oil coming out of the valve cover breather going into the turbo inlet? I noticed the sides of the turbo inlet on the top is lightly covered in oil.
View 3 RepliesWhen i accelerate, i can hear the turbo, i don't know if its a problem though.
I drive a 18 wheeler for work, and sometimes when i'm goin down a hill and i accelerate, i get no power, just hearing the turbo loud and clear with no power.
But i barely hear it on the passat, i don't know if its good or bad.
I took the wagon to the dealer for servicing due to an oil leak. However, before taking it in, I put the car up on ramps and took a peek to see what was the culprit. I noticed that oil was dripping from the turbo area. Nine days ago they performed the following repair:
--> Cause:Gasket for the turbocharger pipe leaking.
--> Fix: Installed a new gasket, added engine dye to check for any other leaks and no more leaks were found after repair.
However, today I noticed oil in my garage floor again from the same spot.
