Passat (B5) :: Sunroof Would Go Up And Down But Not Backwards And Forwards
Feb 4, 2007
I just purchased (yesterday) a 98 VW Passat. THe previous owner said the sunroof would go up and down but not backwards and forwards. It looks like he worked on it because the headliner is filthy but to what extent I do not know. I want to get the headliner replaced to fix the sunroof. I've checked it, and it does go up and down. But the switch seems to be really loose in it's operation.

Got in the car today and moved the gear selector into the manual shift mode. Usually there is no play forwards or backwards. Today there was about 3/8 of an inch travel forward before the spring tension started. I'm taking the car in tomorrow to have the console latch replaced but was wondering why encountered this anomaly in the shift mechanism?

I have a 2003 Subaru Forester, manual transmission, about 117k.Three weeks ago I go to back up and the car feels like the wheels have seized up, wasn't able to budge an inch. I couldn't pull forwards or back. Called the tow truck, brought it to the mechanic and the next day they call and said the rear brakes are almost metal to metal, and that the e-brake pad needs to be replaced as well. So I have that work done and a couple days later the same thing happens. I go to the store and when I go to leave I couldn't pull forward or back. It felt like the brakes were engaged and if I were to give it too much gas something would break.
Called the tow truck again to have it brought back to the mechanic, but this time I couldn't wait to meet the tow there, so I just left the key with the mechanic (mechanic was only a couple blocks from where I was stuck). The next day the mechanic calls to say that the tow truck driver didn't have any problem pulling the car onto the tow, and they didn't have any problem pulling the car into the garage. They put it on the lift and took a look, but couldn't see anything wrong with it.I drove it to work and back the next two days and then it happens again. I try to go in reverse and the wheels have seized up. Went back to the car about an hour later and there was no issue. Drove it a couple more days without a problem, then it happened again this evening. This time it begrudgingly pulled forward a couple feet then stopped. Left it there for about an hour, came back and was able to drive it away without issue. When it seized up I couldn't even push it while in neutral.
What could be causing my car to not want to pull forward or back like this?

My RX350 is over 4yrs old with 105k km on it. I notice lately when I drive off the seat moves back a bit and when braking hard it moves forwards. It is about quarter of an inch movement but it is noticeable. I guess it is not under warranty now. I looked under the seat but can not find where this is coming from, I am assuming it must be a loose bolt that needs to be tightened.

Came in on a cool cloudy morning to work. I listened to the torrential downpours all morning, then it cleared out. When I went out to the lot at quitting time, I was horrified to see the sunroof open. When I got in the car, it was dry, so sometime after the storms moved out, it got opened. I do leave the car unlocked, but can't imagine someone opened it, in fact I think you can't after the key has been removed for a while. Should I pull the fuse to it???

My girlfriend drives a 99 Passat and while driving the other day the sun roof opened on it's own. moving the switch did nothing. We had to manually close the sunroof. a few minutes later it did it again. Usually I'd tell her she's nuts and imagining things but i was in the car while it happened.

I have a 99 Passat with about 65K on it. The sunroof will open sporadically and not necessarily close right away with the switch.

My mother keeps telling me her sunroof keeps opening (tilting) by itself and I didn't believe her until I was in the car when it happened. It just goes up by itself... Should I just bring it in?

Over the last few days my car's sunroof keeps opening and shutting by itself. Its starting to get really annoying and embarrassing especially while on a date.

where to mount the sunroof deflector. It's has two clamp like screws. Pic's would be great. This is the driver gear one.

Sometimes the sun roof of my 2001 Passat will open about 1/5 when the car is on and even when it is parked overnight. Why does this happen? Luckily it wasn't raining the other night when it happened.

1) What would cause a sunroof to open by itself even though the switch will step thru closure until the full closure position is selected then it opens up?
2) Where can I get a owner's manual and/or a fuse chart for a 2003 Passat(B-5) V-6?

So my 2000 1.8t is about to go into its 7th year and for the most part is doing very well. I have a rattle in my sunroof that is driving me crazy lately and I want to get it fixed. It looks like something with the plastic off to the sides. Nothing appears to be loose or out of place.

Noticed an abnormal amount of noise when they open their sunroof?
Mine seems noiser than others I have had and adjusting does not seem to work.
Would the wind deflector work?

There were 2 times I'd noticed my sunroof opened vertically when I walked to my car without recalling ever opening it. I'd just think maybe I forgot to close it. When I looked at the knob, it wasn't switch to a level so i thought it was weird.
Today while driving, my sunroof did the same thing. It opened by itself. I didn't initiate it whatsoever.

I have been unsuccessful in closing the power sunroof from outside the car with the key fob. In my previous VWs and my current A4 I have the ability to do it with the key by turning to the right. The manual says to hold the lock button down??!! How long do I have to hold it down??

Sun roof in not closing. Fuse?. Is there a way to close it?

When opening the sunroof, usually for the first time in a day, the sunroof will make a squeal kind of noise. Nothing appears to be in the tracks or anything.
Usually if I close it, and reopen it, it seems to go away (guess it re-lubed?)
Kind of embarrassing on a newish car (2014) with only 30k miles.
