Passat (B5) :: Steering Rack Failure At 130,000 Miles?

Is that unusual?

View 9 RepliesMy rack and pinion began to fail and my Liberty developed sensitive steering (lane to lane and while towing trailers). I had it replaced locally and aligned but when I got it back it was more sensitive than before and borders on "unsafe to drive". I can imagine what it would do if I put a trailer behind it. In my mind something is binding which is fighting the steering input.
When you turn the steering wheel stays where-ever you steer to (does not return to center). My next repair is a known bad ball joint, but I don't think that is causing this. My question is at 106K could my power steering pump be producing less than full power? Is there a dampener in this system that could have frozen up? I'm ruling out the alignment for now. This is the V-6, 4WD Limited.
I truly intend to repair it forever, but if I can't get past this it goes to the junkyard.
Mine is leaking badly from both tie rod ends. I am guessing the seals got nicked up when the tie rods were replaced. Is there anyway to replace just the seals? I would really like to avoid replacing the rack.
View 2 RepliesI'm going to replace tie rods assembly. I have a question about inner tie rod boot. How do you attach it to the steering rack? No room there, horrible access.
View 1 RepliesHappy owner of a TDI - SEL for just over a year. One week shy of my 40K service, the alternator failed. All repairs covered with my extended warranty. Tech said he hadn't seen another alternator go bad and certainly hadn't seen a 1 year old TDI with 40K miles! Any alternator issues? otherwise been quite happy with the car.
View 2 RepliesReplace the seals in a power steering rack on a Passat? I recently noticed I had a fluid leak after seeing spots on my driveway. After discovering it was power steering fluid when I checked the reservoir, I checked all the lines and found the leak coming from the rack on the drivers side. The boot on the steering rack had come loose and there was fluid leaking from the side of the rack. Is there a fix for this or am I looking at a expensive repair?
View 6 RepliesI have had my 2006 B6 for 4 months now and it has been running perfect, and I have been loving it. I brought the car to the dealer to get PA state inspection and have the wiper recall taken care of. I then get a call from the dealer telling me the oil light came on during the test drive and they are looking into the cause.
Later that day the dealer calls me telling me that we have serious problems and that I will probably need a new engine, I was like WHAT!!! Now before I brought the car in it was running perfect I had no previous problems or anything. After talking to the dealer again, he said they found gas in the oil and a "ton" of metal parts in the oil filter compartment. They are now sending the VW Engineer and a local Rep to figure out what to do.
Engine failure at 12k miles? It seems weird and a major lemon if you ask me. I'm not sure what they're going to do at this point, but all I know is I drive 40k miles a year and need a care that can last, I am not paying $580 a month to drive a car with a replaced engine at 12k miles. This is very frustrating, I hope they either replace the car or pay off the remainder of the loan.
We own not 1, but 2 2007 Passats. My wife's is a 2.0, mine is the 3.6. Both were purchased at the same time (4/07). Both have about 6000 miles on them. And both are going in for their first service at the end of this week.
I feel like what I'm experiencing with ride quality having deteriorated since the cars were new is happening in both cars. I don't know... maybe it's my imagination... but I don't think so.
I remember when the cars were new thinking that the ride was pretty sweet - very smooth, not jarring even over fairly rough road surfaces. I had just come out of an '05 Touareg V8 that I turned in early for the Passat (sold the boat; didn't need a tow vehicle any more and wanted better mileage - but loved the Touareg). Anyway I never really felt like the Touareg's ride degraded that much over the 30,000 miles I drove it.
But the way these Passats are riding right now is bothering me. My wife's car (the 2.0) is a bit worse than mine, I think. But I feel pretty sure what I'm talking about has happened (or worse yet, is perhaps still happening?) to both cars.
It's a 2006 2.0 Turbo. It died last night, had it jumped, drove it 2.5 miles to get gas & wha-la ...dead. Since it was late had it towed back to the house (it's just me...no other car available). I've researched until after midnight and started seeing recalls, tsb...and not into anything about cars except counting on them! It started smelling like sulfur after many attempts to charge the battery..
View 4 RepliesMy parking brake light has been coming on and off for 2 days now. went to the dealership today and on my way there my steering light began to flash. So I guess I can join the steering column failure club. However what faults can the parking throw?
View 4 RepliesMy main concern with this replacement job( I am not doing it), is that the R rack is different that the standard golf rack. is that so?
I have a very good friend and excellent mechanic who said "...it's the part number it gives me." which makes me nervous. I don't want a "less sporty" steering feel.
so are the racks the same? what part number it should be I am having a hard time finding it.
I bought a brand new 07 Legacy 2.5i sedan at the end of 2006. At 1500 miles the steering was problematic, took it in to the dealer, and by the time they were done, they replaced the entire power steering system. They said the problem was with the power steering rack, which they replaced. I asked if this new part was from the same supplier, so could also be defective, and apparently it is. I am rather alarmed, this is the 1st brand new car I have purchased in 20+ years.
View 27 RepliesI just had my Prius C in Alignment shop, and after alignment was done I got ABS light ON. We checked it and it says Steering Rack Angle Fault.
View 10 RepliesThe steering rack on my 2009 Sonata was previously replaced under warranty but now it start to leak seriously.from the two boots at the ends of the steering rack ends. Is it possible to replaced seals only where it leaks?
View 13 RepliesI'd noticed an oil leak drivers side and upon investigation it appears the rack has developed a leak. I lifted the car on the vehicle lift and when I did noticed oil pouring out of the boot surrounding the steering linkage coming from the steering rack. With the tires dropped the full amount this created a tilt of said boot allowing the oil that had filled the boot to drain out. My conclusion is the rack has developed a leak with the boot being full of oil.
I did a "steering rack" search but nothing of value appeared.
I have a 2000 lexus rx300. the steering rack was replaced 2yrs/20k ago. now, there is very slight seeping of fluid. only noticeable on on the boot and never drips onto the floor. i took it back to the dealer and they said that is normal and after 2yrs it's in very good shape. i question why if the seals are working properly then should i see this?
View 6 RepliesI'd like to pin down the issue before dismantling the whole thing.
So my XC90 started creating noise very much like this video (note: this is not my vid) [URL] .....
The car recently got most commonly problematic suspension parts replaced to no cure to the noise.
Mechanic said that it is the steering rack but can't tell what exactly is making the noise.
My 2006 Toyota Camry LE (4cyl) is in the shop today for its 120,000 mile maintenance. The Toyota shop says my power steering rack (or boot?) is leaking, the whole thing needs to be replaced, and this is a $1200 repair. I had an accident in this car on 01/03/13, I was hit on the front passenger side tire, pushing it in and under, along with damage to the front lower corner of the door and the whole fender. I got the car out of the repair shop last week and immediately noticed a lot of banging and bumping that was not there before. I called the repair shop, they said bring it in and they will look at it, I was planning to take it in tomorrow. Meanwhile my car was due for an oil change and the 120,000 mile maintenance, so I dropped it off this morning and you know the rest of the story. I asked Toyota if this could have happened in the accident - they said while it could be that the banging and bumping noises are the boot rattling, it was not likely this would have happened in the accident. What do you think, is it possible or likely the power steering rack could have been torn in the accident or in the ensuing replacement of parts on the undercarriage?
View 6 RepliesI just finished my first MK4 steering rack replacement (don't work on too many VWs), and when I placed the steering shaft from the column onto the shaft from the rack and bolted it down, there was still some clearance (see photo). I was able to get the bolt tightened down ok, but the clearance is bothering me.
View 2 RepliesI need to replace the power steering rack on my car. Mech wants 300+parts. I supply the parts. Is there a different rack for the vr6 VS the I4 jetta?
View 1 Replies2009 Sonata 2.4L ... About 60 000km ago, the complete steering rack was replaced under warranty. Now I notice the PS fluid going down in the PS reservoir. I checked for any loose fittings, all look OK. But I did notice PS droplets hanging from the steering rack boots. So today I replaced the PSF4 fluid with Amsoil PS fluid. I suspect maybe some seals are leaking. Any good product I can use to maybe stop the leaks?
