Passat (B5) :: Purpose Of Electric Fan Behind Radiator?

What is the secondary electric fan behind the radiator for? I never see mine running.

View 8 RepliesI have installed an auxiliary electric fan at the radiator on our 1973 Mercury Capri and it’s controlled by an adjustable thermostatic switch. Wanting to know when the fan comes on, I wired an LED indicator light to fan side of the thermostatic switch and mounted it inside the car. Mission failure.
The light comes on just from leakage through the thermostat. Ok, I figured maybe this is an LED issue. But no, a test with an incandescent bulb showed the same issue.
If the pilot light is going to glow all the time (dim at idle and brighter with revs, by the way), then it’s no good for the purpose intended. A resistor, maybe?
After about 10-15 minutes, following a cold start, this 2007 BMW X3 3.0 six does the following:
1) automatic cabin fan behaves erratically, jumping back and forth between low and high speeds;
2) cabin air does not heat;
3) electric radiator fans run on high;
4) coolant temp rises to normal, but then will suddenly jump up to full hot.
At this point, driver of course pulls over and shuts off engine. The amazing part is this: the engine can be re-started IMMEDIATELY and all of the above problems vanish instantly. Radiator fans shut off, temp returns to normal, cabin fan works normally, and cabin heat comes on. I'm thinking sticking thermostat, but why does shutting off the car momentarily fix it? Change of water pressure when coolant pump stops running?
That MPH average at the bottom right of the screen. Is that actually show the average miles per hour that you have driven? Mine is currently displaying 24. I never drive that slowly, much less often enough to average out my usual 55-70 driving. What is the purpose of that display?
View 3 RepliesI don't know the official name, but it's right above the high beams, it stays lit if you just have your side lights on too. BTW, what's the purpose of it since we really don't have DRL's?
Modifying it with a different bulb, if so what's the size? Same ones as the interior map lights?
Yesterday I was adding some pressure in the tires and I found that the plastic cover under the oil sump is loose on the driver's side and the driver side air scoop (not the brake cooler scoop) is missing. I know it was the guy who changed the oil last time, probably 7 bolts where missing. I went under the car and fit some bolts from my tool box to secure the plastic plate. I was asking myself what do these scoops do? Are they an aerodynamic stuff or coolers to the transmission? Or something else?
View 6 RepliesI just got this project running recently (replaced head after timing belt failure) and on the first night I got it running I noticed the electric fan was not kicking in (belt driven fan works fine). Investigated a bit and found the fan was some what seized. I was able to work it free quite easily so I chalked it up to corrosion from sitting.
fired it back up and let her get to operating temp and once again no fan. checked and it spins freely but never comes on. I did some checking and I (visually) cant find the plug, fan switch, or any fuses that deal with it... So I checked the bentley and it talks about a couple relays that have to do with it, but no fuses (at least that Ive found so far). Before I start tearing into wiring diagrams in the back of the bentley, I'm hoping some of y'all might have some input for me. Maybe some common faults, where to look, etc...
Car is a 2000 Passat 1.8T auto. Just had the head swapped due to TB failure which included waterpump, thermostat, fresh coolant, and all new belts.
What is the purpose of the small rubber/plastic grommet at the bottom center of the wind deflector on our cars? Didn't realize mine was missing until service manager pointed it out.

View 4 RepliesI pulled my air filter for inspection last weekend. The 6.7L airbox is segmented into two parts - One part is very large and contains the pleated paper air filter, as well as the air intake in the base. The other part is small and contains a half-section of the pleated filter, with a fine foam filter below. However, the foam extends out through a sizable hole in the bottom of the small compartment and runs down outside of the box nearly to the base of the entire air box (held on by some plastic straps).
What is the purpose of the foam and "secondary" air intake? Why not simply use one compartment with the paper air filter?
It's an odd small electric motor sound. It happens when I get into the car and tonight I heard it when I turned off the car (had radio off) which that one was longer and had different pitches. It sounds like the power seat is adjusting but it's not. It's driving me nuts that I don't know what it is!
View 2 RepliesToday, as i had my car in the repair shop for a checkup i got a horrible message. The rear caliper/hand brake motor (?) is leaking brake fluid. Replacing this is close to 1500$ (I live in Norway) So my question is: Is there any way to stop the leak without replacing the whole thing? Also, i suspect the leak is minor as the brake fluid is almost on "max". So, if it doesn't really leak a whole lot, do i really need to do anything about it? I mean, if i have to refill the fluid container every six months its much cheaper.
View 1 RepliesThe electric door locks on the left side of my '99 Passat sometime don't work. The left rear works 90% of the time, but sometimes it doesn't lock. All I have to do to get it to work is unlock all the doors with and then hit lock and that cures it every time, and I have been living with that for 3+ years. The driver door lock sometimes decides to not lock or unlock at times. Normally it starts working on it's own when it feels like it, but again, it works 90% of the time. What the likely cause should be and how to go about getting it fixed?
View 1 Replies1.8t 5.5 radiator fan does not kick on when its hot? my clutch fan works obviously but the one next to it thats controlled by the elec. motor only turns on for about 3-5 seconds on warmup and then does not come on again! Its about 70 degrees out and i made sure to get the motor hot and still nothing at a stop! does it have to be EXTREMELY hot to kick it on?
View 4 RepliesSo i cant figure out how to remove the radiator side of the upper radiator hose. I pulled out the pin but i cant remove the hose.
Do I just pull it straight out? Or do I twist and pull? I dont want to break the connection.
First summer with 2014 Passat. We have been getting close to 90 degree days this early in Summer and I have noticed a sensation that I have not had with almost the first year of ownership.
The last couple of days in stop and go traffic I have noticed that when the Radiator Fans edge up to the fastest cooling speed I can feel a vibration in the steering wheel. It is a strong vibration feeling. I had a friend turn off the car while the fans were going full speed. The largest fan on the drivers side seems to wobble as it cost down from the high speed. I am wondering if these fans can be balanced with counter weights.
I start the car, with AC on, radiator fan starts and within a few minutes the engine radiator fan stops working, idles rough since the AC compressor pump keeps cycling on and off and engine starts to overheat. After shutting down I check the engine cooling fan fuse and it sure enough is blown.
How do I determine as to where the short is? Is the short in the wiring somewhere or can the actual motor short out?
So my mechanical fan came apart and punctured several holes in my radiator and my car leaked water and coolant everywhere. So it happened right after startup and I drove it until the coolant light came on, the car wasn't even to full temp.
I started the car a few times between the time I parked it after the fact and when it was finally in my garage. I had to move it into a parking lot after I parked it because it would have to sit over night. Then it was started to put it on a Tow Dolly (AAA has stupid rules, but that's another story) and when I had to pull it off. I also moved it closer to my garage door prior to actually pulling it apart.
Then after I finished changing out the radiator and filling back up with tap water and G12, the thing won't start. It turns over and is getting fuel, but just isn't firing. I didn't disconnect anything other than the hoses for the radiator, the trans coolant lines on the radiator and the coolant temp sensor. So I don't know why this would cause the car not to start.

My radiator fan didn't turn off tonight. Used to Audi's I didn't think much of it as they often run after car is off. Battery died later tonight. The fan will not turn off.
I tried pulling the fuses listed for the fan and it didn't turn off after I got home and would not drive the car anymore. Car sat for 3 hours when the battery died, so it was not a heat issue.I had to disconnect the battery to stop the fan and enable me to start the car again. How do I stop the fan with a fuse/relay so I can use the car until I get to the dealer? 2008 6MT
I have 98 passat V6 and the lover radiator hose is leaking at the connector between radiator and the hose. Do I need to change the whole hose or is there maybe an o-ring that should be changed? How hard is to remove the hose? Do I have to go to the dealer?
View 2 Replies92 Toyota Pickup (22RE auto). New block, rebuilt head, new water pump at 300k about a year ago. Sounds strange I know but that's what seems to have happened. Ive never been able to get heat from the truck since Ive owned it so Ive been trying to fix that. I flushed the coolant out and replaced the tstat. I brought the car to a mechanic and he put a pressure tester on the cooling system and he said it wasn't holding any pressure. He also pulled off the heater core inlet hose with the truck running and no coolant was coming out. He thought there was a blockage somewhere but how to fix it. I figured I might as well try replacing the old radiator cap with a new one so I did. Once I did this, the first time the truck went out, it overheated and the radiator crimped upper seam (on the plastic) burst outward.So all in all...something is wrong.
