my P/S is making whining weird noises i checked the reservoir and there it is low fluid. question is there a nipple somewhere that i can bleed the air i'm not sure if i am right on this one but i have a feeling that when i ran low on fluid i created an aeration in my pump,reservoir?
View 2 RepliesI picked up a '99 Passat 2.8 GLX tonight and the steering is making a loud squeal and groan when I turn the steering wheel. I checked the fluid and it's brown. I've owned a lot of VW's and Audi's and I've never seen brown fluid in one. I checked for a leak but there's so much oil everywhere from where the previous owner just had the cam seals, timing belt, water pump, and a bunch of other stuff changed. The level looks good, but it's just nasty and loud.

View 4 RepliesMy car is a 2002 Accent. So last weekend I replaced my timing belt and my 3 other belts. Before I did this the belts were not squeaking and I was not having any issues with my power steering. I started my car up and the power steering pump was making lots of noise, the power steering reservoir was still full. I was told it's probably the power steering pump and that I would need a new one. So I got a new one, put it on and still the same thing. I looked online and saw that it may be an air bubble in the line so I removed the cap on the reservoir and, with the car turned off and the front wheels off the ground, cranked the wheels lock to lock about 20 times. I started the car and it still makes noise. This morning the power steering felt like it was lagging as I was backing out of my driveway and the squeaking happens when I am idling and gets louder and worse up to about 2000 rpm then stops, which it has been doing since I replaced the belts. I am not sure what else to do, did I mess up the new pump by driving and not bleeding the air out?
View 2 RepliesThe steering on our 02 Accent has been becoming more and more difficult. The belt on the AC compressor snapped off recently. Could this missing belt be causing a problem with the power steering belt? The power steering belt is now making a squeaking noise.

The last two days I've been hearing my power steering pumping making that familiar 'whirrrrr' noise. I thought it was just the pump going out because it has always made some noise when it was cold. Lo and behold, I checked my fluid today and found it was completely dry. I knew it wasn't a good thing because when fluids are dry, they must go someplace. Either way, I got a gal of Dextron ATF in the trunk now.
I filled it up and all was good, so I started to look around for obvious leaks. I did find a hose going to a metal line that DID seem to be dripping, but I wanted to see if maybe others had the same problem and found it was to be a different thing leaking/running down or if this is a common issue.
Not sure if the hose is a dealer only thing. It does look like it's leaking from the end. I could get one of those screw tightening clamps to see if the clamps isn't putting enough 'squeeze' on it. I couldn't see a tear on the hole, but I'm assuming it's a high pressure hole, so it won't leak unless I'm doing a lock to lock turn.
I have a lexus rx 330. Pump started making noise and low on fluid. We replaced all the belts and new pump. After installing new pump it was leaking from fill cup cap when driving also making a lot of noise on cold start. Mechanic said new pump was bad so we put in another one. Car ran fine as soon as we put it in and bleed good. Following morning again a lot of noise on cold start and noise goes away about 10 minutes but again small amount of fluid leaking from cap on fill cup. I replaced the rubber ring on cap to get a tight seal but again nothing.
View 6 RepliesOur 2006 Honda Odyssey had a power steering pump replaced in the spring. It makes a loud whining noise especially when turning. Our mechanic said this is normal!! It looks like air is in the line as the fluid looks foamy. Is there a special way to bleed the lines?
View 10 RepliesLast week I took my 2004 Honda Odyssey in to Firestone for a rear brake job and they ended up selling me an oil change, two new tires, alignment, an alternator drive belt, and two front engine mounts as well. When I picked up the vehicle late Friday afternoon, I noticed the power steering was making a whining noise and the steering seemed a little stiff. I took it back to Firestone Saturday morning, and they looked under the hood and said my power steering fluid was low, so they topped it off. That fixed the whining, but the steering still had a bit of a kink in it. They said it might be an air bubble in the line that would work itself out. Monday morning on my way to work, the whining was back and the steering very stiff and getting noticibly worse by the minute, so I took it directly back to Firestone.
It turns out the rack and pinion is leaking, and Firestone denies that it could have happened while they had the vehicle. The manager I spoke to said "all we did was replace a couple of belts -- didn't even get near the rack and pinion." Well, that's not all they did, but if anything they did could have caused the current issue. I know there were no suspension or power steering issues before I took it in, and after I picked it up suddenly it's leaking fluid like crazy. What can I do or say to press my case?
So I have a 2012 Elantra Limited. From what I understand the power steering is no hydraulics and is only electric assist. So I have a strange problem. I can remember in previous cars when a power steering pump was going bad it made a whining type noise that changed with engine speed. My Elantra is making the same type of noise. I'm trying to track this down. My car doesn't have any other symptoms aside from the noise. It's hard to really tell but it does appear to be coming from the belt side of the motor (passenger side).
View 14 RepliesOk, so I leave the fire station this morning headed home and my steering felt weird. About 1/2 mile from home I hit a bump and my drivers side front wheel started making a screeching noise. I stopped and looked out the window and it appeared fine. I limped home and as I pull in the driveway, I lost all my steering. I look under the truck and this is what I found.
Not sure what to do. This is my daily driver and neither of my 2 mechanic friends will answer their phones.
I have done a search on power tail gate issues on 07 Passat wagons. I have not found many. The issue that I have, when the tail gate is fully open to the top and then go to close it, it make a snap noise. In my mine it sounds like a detent lock releasing. It use to do this on in the past on odd occasions. It appears to be more frequent. It does do it if you go to close it right away. My wife even mention yesterday that she noticed it. The operation works just fine.

View 7 RepliesHere's my problem, I have a B5.5 1.8 5speed and my power steering makes a whining noise when Im turning. I checked the fluid and it's full. A few years ago on a roadtrip from CA to NM, my PS cooler hard pipe had a leak and drained all the fluid. It's was 11pm and still had 30 miles to get home and all I could get was Pennzoil PS fluid from Walgreens. So for the past 3 years I've been using Pennzoil PS fluid. Just recently it started making this noise. Luckily I picked up a 98 AEB parts car for $300 and my question is,
Would a power steering pump from my B5 fit my B5.5??? And, If the problem isn't my pump, would the PS rack fit also??
The other day I started hearing a noise in first gear, and then this toy car sound got worse. I realized the power steering was low so I added more, now it leaks about half a bottle a day. I just wanted to know if its an expensive repair, how I can pinpoint the problem, and what the long-terms effects are if I leave the problem alone.
View 2 RepliesMy power steering pump was making a loud whining sound. No problem, changed the pump. Now after the truck is started I will have no power steering or brake assist, give the truck a little gas and you can hear the power steering pump "start". I have tried every way to get the air out, or is that not the problem. I even lifted the front of the truck off the ground with a forklift and with the truck off turned the wheel about six times stop to stop. Fluid level looks good and has since adding after the change.

It's done about 8300kms so far and I've noticed awhile ago that the car makes clunking noise when I'm turning the steering wheel a lot at low speed (eg. car parks). I'll probably book in for a oil change and ask the service centre to look into it.

I should also note it doesn't seem to do it when it's warm, but when it gets around 50ºF or lower the problem is there. [URL] ....
View 2 RepliesI have a 2009 Camry 5Speed Manual and have had a noise and loud thud coming from my steering whenever i turn the wheel when I am accelerating out of first gear when disengaging the clutch and turning the wheel. For example, if I am in a parking lot and am traveling at extremely low speeds and turning the wheel while in first gear I can hear and feel a thud in the steering wheel.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2002 camry and I flushed my power steering fluid today using the following procedure:
- emptied the reservoir
- connected return hose to a bucket
- added new fluid (ATF dexron III - from toyota dealer)
- jacked front wheels
- turned steering wheel side to side till new fluid came out of return line (my reservoir did get empty couple times in the process so air may have went in)
- lowered the vehicle
- reconnected the return line to reservoir
- ran the engine and turned side to side couple times (did not see bubbling and fluid level did not drop)
I took the car for test drive and noticed that my steering wheel was still making noise when turning. Also, when i was turning the wheel side to side with hood open, I noticed a change in the sound. There was a sticking sensation and steam pressure release noise when I locked the wheel on either side.What could be the problem?
The steering on my wife's 2010 Tiguan makes a bit of a grinding/rubbing noise at low speeds? Something isn't right, it sounds the same way my X5 did when the Rack needed to be replaced. It would be strange to have 2 cars needing new racks within the same year....especially since they are both 2010 model.
