The other day I started hearing a noise in first gear, and then this toy car sound got worse. I realized the power steering was low so I added more, now it leaks about half a bottle a day. I just wanted to know if its an expensive repair, how I can pinpoint the problem, and what the long-terms effects are if I leave the problem alone.

I am losing fluid in the resevior and there is a mess at the bottom around the steering box, lines and sway bar and it's hard to find the origin. it is not leaking at rest with or without the engine running. What are the more common leak points in this system?

View 1 RepliesSo I've been noticing my power steering in the reservoir has been going down for quite some time. Now its more noticeable than ever. Just about a month ago I topped off the tank to the "max" line and now its at the "min" line. I also notice the fluid on the garage floor. I've always had a lot of grease (I assume the fluid) all around the body and under the reservoir under the hood. It seems to be leaking from the hose where it connects to the actual reservoir. Maybe the clamp is bad or something.
View 14 RepliesOK, I have developed a leak in the power steering hose that connects to the fluid reservoir (the smaller diameter hose). The dealer only sells this as an assembly (all the way to the pump, and very expensive). The hose is molded. Need to replace just this first hose section? AutoZone and several others I checked don't seem to have this (at least on line).

I am going in tomorrow for DSG and fuel filter, going to have them look at these issues...should be fun ... oh yeah and head gasket might show signs of leakage......

just found out about this a few days ago. It seems that the leak is between the fluid container and the tube. I just used some zipper to tighten up the connector. Where to buy this tube and the steering wheel fluid, and how much are they? My car is a LE V6 2007.
View 13 RepliesSo the big rubber hose attached to my power steering reservoir is leaking and my mechanic told me to replace it. I went to a couple of different Autozone stores and they both couldn't identify the correct dimensions of it. They told me to take it out and then bring it to them. This is very hard for me since this is my only car and how to pull the bottom bit of the hose out from whatever it's attached to.
I've measured the length to be about 2.4 feet but I'm not sure on how thick it is. I've taken a pic of the hose here:
Just checked out at 2003 V6 LE with 120k miles for $5500. Car seems to be in excellent mechanical condition but I did notice quite a significant power steering fluid leak, seems to be coming from the reservoir. I see that there are two hoses for about $80 each listed on Partsgeek.
Is this a common problem, can the clamps just be tightened, Could it be the reservoir it's self or even the pump too high a pressure?
Seems to be quite a lot of fluid running down the side of the car but after taking it for a test drive I didn't see any signs of it squirting out so perhaps it's a slow leak and been leaking for a while.
On my way to pick up my mother in law yesterday I noticed a strange whirring sound whilst at the traffic lights, thought that was a strange new sound anyway I guessed something was wrong so on arrival I noticed an oil like mark on the left hand side of the car on the wet drive. So it looks like I may have a corroded power steering line. Got the car booked in with the chap who does my vehicle repairs for me is this a difficult job on the V10?
View 6 RepliesMy grandma had purchased an almost brand new B6 Passat with the 4-motion VR6 all leather interior with about 8k on the odometer. Recently she has had some problems with it and has asked me what is going on, My dad has an Audi Allroad, my mom has a 01 A4 event and I have a 04 GLI so we know some stuff about the cars but these problems are eluding me and I was going to look for some counseling. First, her front tires are making this horrible sound, she says it sounds like a Mack truck and it gets worse as you go faster. I'm thinking its the tires but why would it be like that only after 8k? The second problem is her transmission, she has had the transmission fail to engage into gear 3 times, where it takes about 2-10 seconds before it engages. Now the car has about 10k on it. [URL]....

View 2 RepliesHere's my problem, I have a B5.5 1.8 5speed and my power steering makes a whining noise when Im turning. I checked the fluid and it's full. A few years ago on a roadtrip from CA to NM, my PS cooler hard pipe had a leak and drained all the fluid. It's was 11pm and still had 30 miles to get home and all I could get was Pennzoil PS fluid from Walgreens. So for the past 3 years I've been using Pennzoil PS fluid. Just recently it started making this noise. Luckily I picked up a 98 AEB parts car for $300 and my question is,
Would a power steering pump from my B5 fit my B5.5??? And, If the problem isn't my pump, would the PS rack fit also??
Ok, so I leave the fire station this morning headed home and my steering felt weird. About 1/2 mile from home I hit a bump and my drivers side front wheel started making a screeching noise. I stopped and looked out the window and it appeared fine. I limped home and as I pull in the driveway, I lost all my steering. I look under the truck and this is what I found.
Not sure what to do. This is my daily driver and neither of my 2 mechanic friends will answer their phones.
I noticed over the last week that there was a pretty loud whine associated with turning the steering wheel. I checked the fluid level and it didn't seem low. I added a touch just to make sure. Took it into the dealership today and they called back and told me there's a bunch of fluid on the bottom splash pan. They haven't said what the culprit is yet. 46k miles on the car.

View 8 RepliesI just replaced my power steering pump and gear box and I flushed the system until the fluid came out good. I have done the whole lock to lock and pump the brakes but nothing is getting better.
View 3 RepliesMy 2005 Santa Fe, 2.7 liter, automatic, FWD. with 180K miles had a cracked radiator. The leak is in the front of the radiator about 6 inches right of the filler neck (as you stand looking at the front of the car).
I've found an OEM replacement radiator and looking to replace this weekend.
I can see I need to remove most of the front grill and support, drain the radiator, move some parts out of the way and disconnect to hoses and fan electrical leads. Is there anything else I'm missing? Is there a good write-up on a radiator change that I'm missing?
My 97 Concorde 3.5 w/ 223k developed a second coolant leak from the front of the engine. Using a pressure tester I found it was leaking from the water pump housing o-ring (pass side) and also the o-ring behind the water pump itself. I did this exact repair 3 years ago including new pump! I do everything meticulously so this has me a bit frustrated. I've got it all torn down and cleaned up real nice, except there seems to be a lot of pitting in the o-ring grooves on the back of the water pump housing, mainly the large one.Can I use high temp RTV oil-resistant sealant in the grooves and then put the new O-rings in to make sure they don't leak from the pitting?
Also, I found the cam thrust plates to have hard, cracked seals.
I am getting water at the very front of the trunk, nearest the passenger compartment. Might be the drains in that vicinity that might be plugged causing an overflow there .Rest of the trunk is dry. The only wet area is immediately underneath the pull-out "shade" thing that has to be in place for the top to operate. Some indication that the water is coming from above that, since it is wet also.
View 14 RepliesI changed the front differential oil a few moths ago, and now it is leaking oil pretty bad from the axle seals. I think I may have over filled it. The level plug sits quite high on the differential, but that was where i figured i had better fill it to. is this the correct level? If not, how do i set the level correctly. I would like to make sure i have the level correct before I start ripping the entire housing out to replace the seals, and then have to do it all over again because I put to much oil back in it again! if it is correct. Then i have a big job ahead of me. and yes, i did check the vent hose to make sure it is venting properly. that would have been to easy.
