Passat (B5) :: No Grab In Brakes
Mar 22, 2010
I recently got new brake pads put on (front and back) and while they work ok there is no grab in the brakes like there used to be when they were new. They are quieter than the old ones. Do they have to break-in? Should I have gotten the rotors replaced too?

I have an ABS light that likes to come on and off. My rear tires lock up when I come to a stop. Stopping sometimes takes longer distances. Other times I can barely touch the brakes and they'll grab real fast and then become soft immediately. Every time I hit the brakes is different I never know what to expect. There's usually a real long Rea of play in the pedal. As in I push it about half way down then the brakes with grab. Other times I barely put my foot on it and it jerks the truck but then loosens back up and comes to a (normal for the truck) stop. What could this be? 1997 4.6 4x4 f150

I started noticing that the brakes would pulsate, or grab momentarily when almost stopped. I figured that the rotors might be warped, and as I was planning on putting on new green stuff pads and rotors I was waiting for a convenient time to change them.
Now I have noticed some type of fluid, I'm guessing grease, on the side of one spoke of one of the wheels. I recently replaced the steel wheels with SE 16" wheels. I didn't see any leaks then but I guess I wasn't looking like I should have been.
I'm trying to decide what I should be looking for. CV boot leak? Front wheel bearing seal? Brake fluid?

2004 Canyon, rear brakes squeal and grab, and occasionally stick. I know its the semi-metallic rear shoes, is there a cure for this condition?

My 98 Sunfire has a grab and release feel when applying brakes. Mechanic fixed this same problem March 2012. I was told it was warped rotors and brake pads. This worked great until four weeks ago when it started again. I find it hard to believe that rotors and pads would warp again after 7 months. Also the front brakes lock up real easy on wet surface such as a light rain. When they lock up I get a bad rattle sound under the dash. ABS light does not come on and never has. This happens all the time. Even after new pads and rotors were installed.

On said truck, when you go to stop, the brakes grab a bit, then release , then the pedal goes to about 2 inches off the floor, then they grab and hold. Pumping does nothing. No abs light on the dash. Today we put the truck in 4high and while back up I had full brake pressure from the top. Also when you take off, either in the mornings or during the day, it has a slight vibration, kinda like a brake grabbing, then all is fine. The brake grabbing isn't there 100% of the time, I would say 95%. I haven't changed the brake pads, rotors, or anything yet. Just didn't want to throw money at it and still not fix the problem.

2001 V6 passat. the clutch doesn't start to grab until it is almost all the way up. there is maybe 1/2 inch of pedal travel where the clutch is actually grabbing. how much travel should there be when the clutch is actually grabbing?
This is a hydraulic clutch setup, right? so i was thinking best case scenario, it needs fluid or to be bled for air, worst is a new slave cylinder. 100K miles on it, engine ran strong and the clutch didn't slip at all.

The rear seat belts in my wife's 2001 Civic EX are annoying, but I don't know if this is abnormal, and can be fixed, or just something we have to live with. Basically, the seat belts frequently grab you and won't let go, so you can't lean forward, for instance. You have to unlatch them and start over.
When I test the belts without latching them, I pull them out a long way and let them retract over and over, and then at some point they grab and I can't pull them out again without letting them retract all the way back to the beginning. I can hear that the ratchet is engaged when this is happening.
During the time when they do pull out and retract with no problem, if I give a sharp tug, they grab, like they're designed to do, and then let go.

My '07 Suburban with 55k miles has a "slip and grab" feeling coming from the rear end (when leaving a dead stop, rounding corners at low speed, and coming to a stop). Almost feels like a bad universal joint. The guy at the local axle shop tells me that this is common among GM trucks. He said that he has never seen one fail, but when I get sick of the feeling to have the rear end replaced. He said that it has something to due with the traction control "governors". I will be taking the vehicle to a GM dealership (since this is drivetrain related and under the 100k warranty. As I would like to be as specific as possible when talking to the dealership.

My truck doesn't want to go grab parking!! The shifter has a lot of play, Every time I go to park my truck I have to forcefully hold the shifter up into parking so it can grab. I had times when the shifter its in parking and it will still move, like I've gotten out and pushed it and it moves.

I've just purchased a 2013 F250 Lariat crew cab. In the car wash I had quite a bit of water coming our of the passenger handle on the a pillar. I've researched this site and all I've found is 3rd brake light, sunroof and the Sirius satellite antennae leaks. I don't think it could be any of those. I don't have a sunroof, the third brake light is in the back and the antennea is on the drivers side. I'm thinking window seal or passenger door weather seal.

2012 350, crew, 4x4, 6.7, LB. Ignition does not always engage when you turn the key (we've changed the tumbler and the batteries) after sometime the truck will start. the dome lights do not work in auto anymore and every so often the steering will "grab" to the left, when I compensate it will switch to the right. I can drive from 20 - 300 miles sometimes before it does this and then it may or may not come out of it right within 5 - 20 minutes.

I have a 1997 F150, 4X4. My mechanic says its time for new brakes and was curious if it would be worth possibly converting from drum brakes to disc brakes??
My mechanic has quoted me $300 to do the rear brakes, would it be worth the extra money to convert??? I really don't care for drum brakes. I have done a search on the internet and every time it brings up the issue with the parking brake.

So my front brakes are squeaking pretty damn bad, and I'm pretty sure that I need to replace them. However, with the history that we have with the rears wearing faster than the fronts, and since neither have been replaced in 30K miles.
I don't want to have to come back and go at it again, and would rather spend one day then two getting the job done. .

The car was warm and I was approaching a stop light; as I went to stop I needed more and more brake pressure to stop the car. When I realized that the engine was overpowering the brakes I slammed on the brakes and the car came to a stop but not as abruptly as I would expect. I did get stopped without hitting the car in front of me *whew*. Once stopped I noticed that the engine seemed to be running at a higher RPM than normal idle (~1k) and the transmission was not in "neutral" like it would normally be at a stop. The brake pedal felt mushy. The car moved forward with marginally decreased brake pressure; so I dropped it into neutral and the load released from the transmission and the engine dropped down to normal idle RPM ~650 or so.
This happened 2 days ago and I have driven the car twice since without problem. One other thing I noticed was that I had engaged the parking brake when I left the car to go in a store; then when I returned and started the car to leave ( just before the incident) the parking brake button indicated it was disengaged.

I have a braking problem. I may know what's wrong but I want sum insight maybe sum1 else has had the same problem. when I press the brakes kinda hard the rear end bounces like esp the tire itself, not the car. I'm thinking its the rear suspension is worn out.i thought it was from abs since my abs are not working right. so I unplugged the module and pulled fuses out and now I got manual breaks. but it does the same thing it breaks better then abs but it still bounces.

I recently noticed that my car wasn't performing the ABS self-test (that little brake pedal vibration and sound you hear when you reach 5 mph backing up on the first start-up of the day). Saturday I had to make a sort of emergency stop, and I didn't feel that ABS vibration in the pedal, and I even skidded slightly.
There's no message on the display about the ABS or anything else. I did recently have my front pads and rotors replaced with OEM parts, including pads w/sensors. Is there anything the mechanic could have done while replacing the brakes that might have messed up the ABS.

Just bought some new tires (Michelin Pilot Exalta A/S) and we've been getting a lot of rain/snow in Chicago and I'm just thinking its the brakes getting wet and kind of rusting. I drive local and less than 1 mile every other day. When I brake it sounds like the brakes are grinding. Almost like the sound your brakes make after a heavy rain fall and when your car sits for the day. It grinds a bit.
That's what my guess is. The tires are new and have a little noise when slowing down and turning slow. Basically I know I don't need new brakes. Just checked them about a month ago.

My brakes squeak like a mofo at every stop until they are warmed up. The car didn't used to have this problem and it is very annoying. 28300 miles.

Love my 2012 TDI SEL. Lately I have noticed that it seems that the AC cuts out when I step on the brakes. I typically notice when I get off the freeway and come to a stop at the end of the off-ramp. The air coming out of the vents will be warm for some 5 - 10 seconds then get cold again.
I have also noticed this symptom from time to time when cruising along on the freeway. I know that some cars will disengage the AC if you really step hard on the gas, but that's not what's going on here it seems..... I have never had that happen in any other car. Is this normal for the 2012 Passat?
