Passat (B5) :: Low Oil Pressure Light On After Warm Up
Aug 24, 2006
oil light on after warm up. 15 psi at idle, 23 psi at 2500 rpm . will get as high as 28 psi at any rpm above 3500 but no higher. heard of the sludge problem so i added flush and changed oil using amsoil 5w40. this did not change the pressures. when i drained the oil , i poked a wire in the drain hole to try to see if i could drag some sludge out but there did not seem to be any there.
I am thinking the oil screen may be clogged with some harder deposits which would require removal of the oil pan.does this all sound reasonable and what kind of difficulty is the oil pan job. it looks rather tight. this is a 1999 passat 1.8 t with a/t.
One other thought: this vehicle just had a head job after a timing belt break. the valves were replaced etc. i wonder if that could have affected the chain driven oil pump?

Last weekend I decided my brothers 850 T5 was well over due an Engine oil and AFT change (two years for oil and never for the atf). The car has done 182,000 and drives great. Any way I bought 20 litres of 15w-40 and 20 litres of DEX 3 atf as it worked out a lot cheaper and it can be used for my fathers 940.
Anyway on Saturday I got the engine warm and noticed the oil pressure light flicker on and off. it had never done that before so I should have checked the dipstick there and then but I just went ahead and drained the old oil and removed the filter. To my surprise only about two litres of black oil came out despite the fact my brother swears he checked it 2 weeks before and it was fine. I thought this was odd as the engine had been running perfect and at that level I would expect serious damage to have been done. I fitted the new filter and sump plug with washer, filled a 5 litre tub from the bigger 20L tub and poured in 4L. I checked the dip stick and it took the remaining litre to get the level correct. I checked it again and then started the engine to get the oil into the filter etc and the level was still perfect. I finished the atf change(that's another story) and thought it a job well done.
The next evening my brother was about to use the car and I said I would check the level one more time now it was cold. There was nothing on the dipstick. There was no oil under the car so I slowly topped it up but nothing showed on the stick. I knew there was at least 5 litres in there so I didn't want to over fill it but when I started it, it sounded tappety. I put another couple of litres in and the noise reduced but still nothing on the stick. he then drove the car for a short journey and it drove fine but I said it was still tappety. I checked the oil again and now the handle snaps off the dipstick.
I have done oil changes many times before and am really very competent mechanically (I'm an engineer). Any way this gets me doubting the dipsticks accuracy so I suggest he let our neighbour who's a mechanic take a look the next day and basically today he came back and said he drained the oil and there was only 2.5 litres of oil in the engine. He topped it up and it's running fine and I fixed the dipstick with glue to check and it's perfect there as well. The thing is I know that I put enough in there, and my 20 litre tub has only 10 left.
The car is fine now. I know the obvious ones are that it was my mistake and I didn't put enough oil in, or I don't know the difference between a 1 litre and 5 litre tub but I assure you that this wasn't the case. Is there any where internal this quantity of engine oil can leak to? the transmission? coolant?

Just replaced the hpop on my 04' 6.0. It had been down for about a year because my low pressure oil light would come on after warm up. Truck ran PERFECT, but dam light would come on. Eventually it wouldn't start by cranking, but would on a bump. (I have a 6spd.) still ran good. I would never run it over 5 minutes because i didn't want to damage anything. Finally getting around to fix it.
After a day of air testing, we tracked it down to hpop. (air coming out of turbo drain tube). I had a hunch that the dam bb on pump had spit out from similar stories on FTE, and thats what happened.
Replaced pump. (its an older style pump BTW, although i have a january 04 build and every ford parts guy said differently.) Put everything back together and now it runs terrible! We ran the truck for over 20 minutes and it didn't get better. I am afraid its gonna damage something to keep running it. My mechanic says 5 cylinders are misfiring and its something to do with the ficm or injector harness.... But, it ran perfect right before the hpop change???? Everything was double checked to make sure it wasn't something dumb.

Picked up a 5spd 98 Passat w/AEB issues... 117K miles
Oil light & buzzer comes on once warm... so I flushed with Mobil syn 0-40W (previous owner was using whatever oil).
Dropped oil pan, changed out oil pump w/Meyle oil pump (good sludge & nice metal shavings)
New Mobil syn 0-40W - engine runs smooth...
Issue.. oil light and buzzer are intermittant, engine runs & sounds great.
Mechanic tells me coil packs can induce noise into electrical and cause nuisance warnings like this.
Rather tentative to drive with oil buzzer & light going on/off... Any way to ensure another trouble free 50K miles

So I went for an oil change today left the place and about twenty minutes later of highway driving dashboard lights and says 'stop! Oil pressure! Engine off!' I get off the highway turn it off check to make sure everything is tight get back in start it up start driving again. Light and everything comes back on and the car dies. Call up the place they come out and say that if its over full (which it was) it can cause this. The guy empties the oil and refills it leaving it a little low. Car still does the same thing! I have to bring it to their shop In the morning but if I could go in knowing a little something that'd be best. So the question is what did they do to my car?!

Light came on a few days ago and I just inflated them to spec. 3 were around 30psi while one was down to 29. Indicator is still on when I start up the car. Did a search and one mentioned that driving approx 15mi it will turn off. Others say a button in the glove box will reset it. I looked and do not see one. Car is 09 passat. Hoping it shuts off on my drive to work ~20mi. If not how do is reset? I read owners manual and did not see anything about pushing a reset button or anything.

I let my car sit for about a month and about a quart of oil leaked out of it. I drove the car and got the "low oil pressure" light and the STOP warning!. I refilled the engine with oil but now every 5 minutes or so i get the stop warning and then i turn the engine off. If I wait I can drive the car another 5 minutes or so before the warning light goes on. What could be wrong?

I was on my way to celebrating my 10 year anniversary this weekend, when the oil pressure light began to blink, the warning buzzer sounded, and the dreaded STOP indicator lit up on the dash. I pulled off of the highway immediately, luckily I was already near an exit, and turned off the car. I called my dealer and told them what had happened. They advised not driving the vehicle, so I had it towed to a local mechanic. We left the car at the mechanic, and rented a car in order to proceed with the anniversary celebration.
I was debating about how to handle the car situation. Should I pay to have the car towed to the dealership to investigate, or attempt to drive the vehicle 45 miles home. I decided to change and inspect the oil, fill with Castrol Syntec 5w-40, start the car and idle for a few minutes and check for any indicators. Everything looked ok. The oil that I drained out looked fine, as it hadn't been that long since the last oil change. No warning indicators. So I decided that I would head home, and if any warning lights came on, I was prepared to call and have it towed to the dealership. We made it home fine, without incident. No warning lights, no odd engine noises, no leaks, no smoke, everything normal.
A week ago, I had the latest recall handled. When I picked up the car from the dealership, I noticed that the AC wasn't as cold as normal. If you can call the normal condition "cold". I didn't think much of it until we started out for this vacation. But now that the AC isn't working, and I got the oil pressure warning "out of the blue" I am having some worries.
Questions:What should I do with the car now? Take the car to the dealership to check out the indicator light? Have them check for oil sludge? I am the second owner. The first owner had it on lease, and I think I have most of the oil change records.
It sounds like others are having concerns about the recent ECU flash. Could the new flash have changed the pressure at which the oil pressure indicator comes on in order to avoid further oil sluge/engine replacement issues? Did VW disable AC all together? What others may have found out about the recent ECU flash.

My B5.5 is about to hit 110K and in the past 12 hours, the STOP! low oil pressure warning light has come on during a right hand turn. Is this an indication issue or a no oil pressure issue?

Last week I had new tires installed on my 18" Samarkands and the TPMS light has been on since. I've verified that all four corners have the metal TPMS sensors in place and the tires are at 40psi, spare is 38psi. I have driven over 100 miles since the tire change. In past the light would come on when pressure below 36psi, and would turn off when tires inflated.
Have this problem after a tire change? Are the sensors easily damaged? Discount Tire/America's Tire Store said to bring the car back so they could take a look, but first wanted to get Vortex input.

When it's cold I can floor it and it'll go to 4K RPM.....When it warms up the oil pressure drops and then I can't push the motor over 1500 RPM. I overhauled it and used the old camshaft....I really don't want to get charged 80 bucks an hour for a mechanic to take 2 days to tell me it something I could have fixed myself.

Is there a reset to the tire pressure warning light? I filled all 4 tires to recommended pressure and the light is still on.

I have a 99 VW Passat wagon with 140K miles. 4,000 miles ago, the oil pressure light was triggered and I had about $1200 worth of work on the engine (oil change replaced with syntec, replaced oil filter, washer, pump, restrictor, sealant, and gasket). Last week, the oil pressure light was blinking again so I took it back to the same service shop at our local dealership. They said that I need a new engine.

I have a 2007 Passat Wlfsburg Edition with 4,300 miles on it. In the message center it stated "Tire Pressure Too Low!" There is also a tire yellow warning light lit. I checked the tire pressure. They were all at 30 psi. I inflated them to 33 psi as stated on the door jamb. The light and message are still there. I checked the owners manual and it doesn't say how to reset it or anything. What should I do?

So tonight I'm driving on I-80 and all of a sudden I hear a thud, the TPMS light comes on and a warning of low tire pressure. I get out to take a lot and the rear left tire is practically flat. Changing the tire was pretty easy once I figured out where everything was in the tray.
So now I'm in the market for a replacement tire as there was a huge hole in tread. I have a about 3000 miles on the car. Would you get a replacement tire that is the same make/model as the rest of the tires, or would you simply get a cheaper replacement? Once I am ready to replace the rest of the tires, I'm not sure if I would replace them with the OEM make/model anyway. At the same time I'm not sure how long the OEM's will last.

I have a 2000 passat wagon 1.8t and recently my oil pressure light comes on after engine temp. reaches about 175degrees... but it only comes on when I am running below 1650rpm's it will come on and beep and flash a couple times then go away what could cause this... oil pump? worn camshaft?
It does leak oil from somewhere on the bottom half of the block but its a very very very small leak and its had that since i got the car about 3 years ago. The car has 193,xxx miles on it now and I've also noticed i have cracked and broken oil breather hose? ... that starts from underneath the intake manifold...
Y+This hose goes from the engine block to the back of the engine then forward to the other side of the engine to my air filter... I've removed this hose and it is infact broken and dry rotted into about 4 pieces but I don't even know what the hell it is it also looks like i'll have to remove the intake manifold to put this hose back on and on the engine block!!

Took trip these past few weeks and on the way home today I got the oil pressure light and eventual "grinding" noise from under the hood. I was at about 75mph on the interstate. So now I am stranded 800 miles from home. VW is towing the car tomorrow morning. Car has 24k.
