I have a 2003 passat. I have noticed, and its getting gradually worse, a knock that comes from the dash. I get one knock when I go round a corner and then a similar knock when I go round an opposite corner. Its as if something is rocking from side to side.
It sounds like its coming from behind the dash just off center to the left. Perhaps behind the passenger airbag? Its difficult to tell exactly.
My 2011 F-150 Super crew eb has started to have a knock that comes from under the dash in the radio area. It doesn't occur every time it's started. It is 3 or 4 knocks that sound like a plastic gear slipping, then it stops. I am thinking something in the vent/defrost door. Is it vacuum operated or electronic? Any thoughts?
View 4 RepliesI recently bought a 2007 Passat 3.6 and am now noticing an odd sound from the motor. When I am at parking lot speed, just barely giving it gas (1000 RPM or so) I can hear a dull, almost rhythmic knock coming from the motor. It's similar to an exhaust "lub-dub" sound, but not. I brought it to the dealer under it's bumper to bumper warranty and they told me that it is a normal sound for the vehicle "in this configuration". Is this really normal?? I'm worried that it isn't, and just about the time I'm out of warranty it'll be a big deal. The car has 32K on it and the engine has 20K. Yep...it blew and was completely replaced at 11K.
View 2 RepliesI bought a 2002 W8 92k Miles from a dealer for a very cheap price, KBB 9k, i paid 2k because there was a engine knock *gasp* i know. The body/interior is in good shape. From what I was told the noise was coming from the 'upper' part of the engine..I was hoping it was probably a bad lifter, not a big problem. So the car was trucked to me yesterday, it drives fine still but the engine noise was more severe than i thought. I'm 95% sure it's a spun rod bearing. I'm stressing .
I own a 2 ton gray monument. I cant spend that much money right now on just an engine and a rebuild might be just as expensive. I'm hoping (I need to stop that) that maybe i can drop the oil pan, inspect/remove the rod caps and maybe replace the bearings or push the pistons out the top. In my mind I know the crankshaft was probably scared too but im keeping my hopes high that it wasnt. If thats the case then the whole engine will need to be removed.
I know it not a good idea to buy a car with a knock but that was the condition or the purchase. I want to atleast try to get an idea of the work needed before considering parting it out.
There is this *knocking* sound everytime i hit the brake. I don't know what it is?
View 2 RepliesIt only seems to happen every few days. I have noticed it when I come to a stop, then I hear a repetitive knock coming from under the front passenger side of the car. knock, knock... 7 times, in rhythm, not decreasing in volume, then it stops. Kind of like a gnome trying to get in from under the car... It does not sound like something is flapping or swinging as the knocks are consistent, it sounds mechanical in nature. The car is at the dealer right now for that and other things but they cannot get it to make that noise.

It sounds as though I have a relay in the relay panel behind the headlight switch clicking on and off while I am driving. I searched the archives a bit and through my own reasoning, I figured it is not related to the hazard switch or turn signal stock ( I could be wrong though).
Description: It only clicks while I have my foot on the accelerator and the car is in motion, never other wise. It is not dependent on throttle location; it clicks the same way regardless of where the throttle is as long as it's being pressed. The clicking stops completely when the throttle is not being pressed.
Because of this, I am unable to locate the exact relay that is making the noise as it is impossible for me to open the door and look at the relay panel while driving. The clicking is some what erratic; It will click, pause for 2-4seconds click again then wait anywhere from 2 to 10 seconds and repeat. It's driving me nuts. Evap? Is this normal? Can it be stopped?
I have a 2000 Passat w V6 thats in the shop at the dealers. The ABS/Brake light in the dash is coming on. The dealer says I need a new sensor in the ABS module. This sensor cost $700 plus about $400 in labor. Seems very pricey to me. My question is, could I buy a used ABS module and replace the bad one with the bad sensor myself? Where could I get a used or new ABS module at a good price? Is it hard to change out?
View 6 RepliesAs I was driving on the highway yesterday, I noticed an unusual heat coming from my car. I thought it was the air vents at first, but to my surprise, it was coming from the brushed aluminum interior trimming around the navigation and the that plastic piece around the key fob. There was also excessive heat coming from the the gas and brake pedal area. I am wondering what this is and I am worried that it might be an insulation issue.
There is also a very rough idle when I am at a stop on a red light. It got louder recently as there is a weird ticking noise/rattle coming from under the car, by my feet. This is definitely associated with the notorious idle issue on the 3.6 but my stealer cannot identify and replicate the issue.
Noticed a deodorized smell coming from dash vents when heater put on? After my 30k service I noticed the smell of deodorizer.
View 6 RepliesOdd problem has arisen in my wife's Passat. It's a sort of "chirp" or squeak that seems to be coming from underneath the passenger side dash. It only makes the noise while moving (whether it's 1mph or 100mph) but it's still intermittent and doesn't seem to happen under and exact driving conditions (happens most frequently when turning at low speeds, but can also happen rolling straight down the highway).
My first though would be the blower motor, sometimes it happens with the A/C off. I took it to the shop a few weeks ago and of course it stopped making the noise on the way there and it started back up on the way back. So now it's in the shop again.. Anyway, I managed to catch it on video [URL] ....
So i just bought my 2003 passat wagone gls 1.8tand it has this "STOP" "BRAKE FAULT" coming up on the dash display and the ABS light and traction control light is on steady and the BRAKE light is flashing....a code was ran for the speed sensor and that was replaced but the light is still on....what could it be?????

I have been hearing a a very subtle (but noticeable) noise coming from within the dash area of my 2002 Passat (mostly near the glove box side, but also in the middle area). Noise occurs when the ignition is turned on - with or with out the engine running. It can be heard while driving, but is more noticeable when I turn the HVAC fan to off. The sound is random, and seems to be like a relay dithering, an intermittent buzzer or a fan noise (although no fan is on.) It sort of sounds like a cell phone vibrating randomly in the glove box.
View 2 RepliesJust bought a used 2007 Passat 3.6L with 29K on it. Great car so far. However, I am wondering about a sound that is coming from inside the dash area. Sometimes when I am at idle, especially just after starting the car, I can hear what sounds like movement within the dash. I'm thinking that it must be the climate control system moving louvers, etc? It isn't constant, and really not all that bothersome. My wife at first thought there was a mouse inside! Is this something that others have noticed? Should I bring it in for inspection?
View 8 Replieswhen the car has been driving for at least 20-30mins and you come to a stop (either lights or parking lot) as you release the brake pedal the rear knocks. it will also do this sometimes as you apply the brake and shifting from neutral to drive or reverse.

bought my car in 2008 with 19k already on it certified used. fast forward to 2012 and 102,000 miles on it engine has a knock coming from the engine block. I purchased a warranty 7/100,000 mile. Did oil changes myself every 5k full synthetic. when the car developed a knock i noticed the engine oil was scary low. Since i got my car from the time i got it at 19k and i bought the 7/100,000 mile warranty on top of that.
View 3 RepliesSo this just started happening last night and I haven't had time yet to get the car in a rack. There is now a fairly loud knock (changes frequency with speed) coming from under my right foot while coasting in gear. It does not affect steering, braking, handling (from what I can tell), or acceleration. The knock it not there while coasting in neutral. My concern is that it may be a mount that is loose.
