Passat (B5) :: How To Switch Gear When Going Uphill
Sep 12, 2009
This weekend I'm heading to a friend's house up on the hill. The road on the way to his house is steep. I've never learned how to use the 1,2 gear other than Drive. Should I slow down(let go of gas pedal) before switching to 1 or 2? Or brake completely then switch gear? I really don't know. I don't even know the difference between 1 and 2.

I have an '03 AWD, automatic Santa Fe and it started shifting really hard into 2nd gear when going uphill recently. It also seems to take a while to shift into 2nd from 1st, but it doesn't bang like it does when downshifting.
In other threads on this site is seems like either the throttle position sensor or shift solenoids may be responsible for this. What's causing it, and how to go about fixing it?

Recently I have another problem:
When I drive uphill on the way the car's transmission doesn't shift up to the upper gear, the gear stays on 1,when I press the gas pedal more the EPC light comes on the dashboard,I must release 2-3 times the gas pedal then the gear goes up to 2-nd or 3-rd gear. This happens only when I drive uphill, when drive on flat street this problem almost doesn't come.
Another, when I drive downhill, the gear doesn't release sometimes too,the car tries to stop from 3-rd gear directly to 0,and the RPM goes straight to 100-200,even the car turns off... I heard something for the VW Phaeton transmission problems, and that it can be SOFTWARE flashed and the problems go away???

My husband's 1999 (manual transmission) Honda Accord has suddenly gone from a very reliable vehicle to a very big problem. Last week, he experienced problems while driving in fourth gear going up hill at around 45 MPH. The car essentially stopped pulling him up the hill, so he went into third, and got nothing, then second, and got nothing. It took a few tries to re-start the car, which then started idling at lower-than-usual RPM's.
He revved the engine a bit, gave it a test drive, and was able to get to his destination without any more problems. The next day, at about the same place in the road, he experienced something similar, but this time, he revved the engine to increase the RPM's while in fourth gear and was able to make it through without any stalls. This morning, however, his car did not start. The engine will turn over, but it is not engaging. It does not seem to be an electrical problem, since the engine is turning over. No warning or "check engine" lights have come on at this point.

My Subaru want to stall when it shifts from a higher to a lower gear when driving up a grade/hill. Also does the same thing when pulling out from a stop sign or traffic light. You need to pump the accelerator to get it going.

My 2000 1.8t, I changed the engine. Since I changed my engine, I have not that power anymore, sometimes I have some boost, and than I just let go....and I just have that feeling that i have regular 1.8 engine not the T anymore. My mechanic doesn't know what it is, he thinks that's normal, but I know how my car was before....like at freeway, when i drive the hill up, there is no power anymore.

Occasionally my 2013 tdi has weird transmission issues. Usually it is from a start from a stop sign, typically when I am driving uphill. What happens is I step on the gas and it takes maybe 3-5 full seconds to respond and actually start moving. It is a total loss of power. What could be happening? I took it to the dealer and they said they "tuned the transmission" or something that I don't really buy because I still have the issue occasionally. I had this issue from day one and now have about 25k miles on the car.

I need removing the console on a 2005 Malibu Max. The switch on the shifter will not move the transmission down to 2nd or 1st gear. There was a post by "shadow5599" on 05-05-2009 stating that this problem was caused by a broken wire in the harness under the console leading to the shifter +/- switch. He said it was easy to fix but the console needed to be removed. Later on the same day he posted that he had just posted the instructions on how to remove it. I'm a first time user on this site and I haven't been able to locate those instructions.

I have an early 99 f350. when i got the truck the OD switch(maybe light too) didn't work. i ran it for about 1k mi. yesterday i left work to come home and i didn't have 1st or 2nd gear but still had 3rd and od. the only way to get 2nd is to manually put it in 2nd gear. 1st seems to be nowhere around.
I do not have a code reader and wont for at least a month or so. I did install a simple ts6 in it, that's about all i did with the truck.

I have a 1998 Mazda Protege LX Automatic, and my ignition switch is completely unresponsive: when on accessory or run position nothing comes on.
I am also noticing that I can switch gears even with the key out and brake pedal not depressed.
I tried to check the function of the ignition switch, and found the following:1) It has one white wire with 3.5v2) When the switch is in Acc position, a black wire with white stripe also has 3.5V on it now3) WHen the switch is in On position, all the wires going into the Switch have 3.5V on them...

I have an Elantra 2012 sedan GL and last year i tried installing HID's. It worked for a whole but then it stopped after. I learned that it wasn't getting enough power so then yesterday I bought a wiring kit to be able to wire my HID to tap to the battery to get more power. Everything was fine till I got to work but when I had to leave work., there was an issue. Whenever i switch the gear from park to drive or reverse or neutral. My car seems to jerk. And when I'm driving and it changes gears, it also jerks. Kind of the same thing how if your driving a manual car and you change gears wrong. This happens when my lights are off. But when i turn them on it then stops. And when i turn it back of it doesn't do it anymore.

The switch for turning overdrive off that's located on the auto trans shifter stopped working. I've taken off the column cover to see if the wires have been severed from the tilt wheel, but nothing wrong there. I also checked the fuses, and all is well. Is it possible that the switch is bad at the end of the shifter, or somewhere farther down the column?

My AC is no longer running. Last summer it would struggle to get cold, but when in motion it did pretty well - just not freezing cold. Last few weeks it seemed like the compressor would switch off when stopped. Then past week, I hit the AC button (light comes on, fan switches to low, and the relay clicks) but it sounds like the AC compressor isn't engaging. The dryer is frosty to the touch, but the low and high ports in the bay are warm/hot. I checked the pressure and it was through the roof. I vented some (I know I know) out, but all that came out mostly was air with a bit of the refrigerant squirt once or twice during the vent. Still no success. Should there be air coming out of the low pressure port?

My brake light switch went out at 93,000 miles. It is a recall issue with all the other models but not the passat. So I guess I have to change it myself. But I can't find the switch.
