Passat (B5) :: How To Attach Inner Tie Rod Boot To Steering Rack
Apr 30, 2010
I'm going to replace tie rods assembly. I have a question about inner tie rod boot. How do you attach it to the steering rack? No room there, horrible access.

I'd noticed an oil leak drivers side and upon investigation it appears the rack has developed a leak. I lifted the car on the vehicle lift and when I did noticed oil pouring out of the boot surrounding the steering linkage coming from the steering rack. With the tires dropped the full amount this created a tilt of said boot allowing the oil that had filled the boot to drain out. My conclusion is the rack has developed a leak with the boot being full of oil.
I did a "steering rack" search but nothing of value appeared.

So I have ordered practically a whole front end for my Ranger. I decided to replace all the bushings, ball joints and shocks. Only thing not getting replaced are the springs, steering knuckles/hubs and sway bar. I did find that the lower half of the upper left hand sway bar bushing was completely missing along with the upper left ball joint boot. I was looking into replacing the Rack and pinion bellows/boot. I noticed that there is a line that goes up into the boot where it attaches to the body of the rack and pinion. What is that and does it need to be removed to replace the boot?

I was replacing the oil in the transfer case and came across this under the passenger side. Power steering rack seems to be leaking through the rubber boot, but I have not noticed anything on the garage floor in recent months...
Can the boot itself be replaced? I hate to think the whole system needs to be replaced.

Mine is leaking badly from both tie rod ends. I am guessing the seals got nicked up when the tie rods were replaced. Is there anyway to replace just the seals? I would really like to avoid replacing the rack.

Is that unusual?

Replace the seals in a power steering rack on a Passat? I recently noticed I had a fluid leak after seeing spots on my driveway. After discovering it was power steering fluid when I checked the reservoir, I checked all the lines and found the leak coming from the rack on the drivers side. The boot on the steering rack had come loose and there was fluid leaking from the side of the rack. Is there a fix for this or am I looking at a expensive repair?

My main concern with this replacement job( I am not doing it), is that the R rack is different that the standard golf rack. is that so?
I have a very good friend and excellent mechanic who said "...it's the part number it gives me." which makes me nervous. I don't want a "less sporty" steering feel.
so are the racks the same? what part number it should be I am having a hard time finding it.

I bought a brand new 07 Legacy 2.5i sedan at the end of 2006. At 1500 miles the steering was problematic, took it in to the dealer, and by the time they were done, they replaced the entire power steering system. They said the problem was with the power steering rack, which they replaced. I asked if this new part was from the same supplier, so could also be defective, and apparently it is. I am rather alarmed, this is the 1st brand new car I have purchased in 20+ years.

I'd like to pin down the issue before dismantling the whole thing.
So my XC90 started creating noise very much like this video (note: this is not my vid) [URL] .....
The car recently got most commonly problematic suspension parts replaced to no cure to the noise.
Mechanic said that it is the steering rack but can't tell what exactly is making the noise.

My 2006 Toyota Camry LE (4cyl) is in the shop today for its 120,000 mile maintenance. The Toyota shop says my power steering rack (or boot?) is leaking, the whole thing needs to be replaced, and this is a $1200 repair. I had an accident in this car on 01/03/13, I was hit on the front passenger side tire, pushing it in and under, along with damage to the front lower corner of the door and the whole fender. I got the car out of the repair shop last week and immediately noticed a lot of banging and bumping that was not there before. I called the repair shop, they said bring it in and they will look at it, I was planning to take it in tomorrow. Meanwhile my car was due for an oil change and the 120,000 mile maintenance, so I dropped it off this morning and you know the rest of the story. I asked Toyota if this could have happened in the accident - they said while it could be that the banging and bumping noises are the boot rattling, it was not likely this would have happened in the accident. What do you think, is it possible or likely the power steering rack could have been torn in the accident or in the ensuing replacement of parts on the undercarriage?

I just finished my first MK4 steering rack replacement (don't work on too many VWs), and when I placed the steering shaft from the column onto the shaft from the rack and bolted it down, there was still some clearance (see photo). I was able to get the bolt tightened down ok, but the clearance is bothering me.

2009 Sonata 2.4L ... About 60 000km ago, the complete steering rack was replaced under warranty. Now I notice the PS fluid going down in the PS reservoir. I checked for any loose fittings, all look OK. But I did notice PS droplets hanging from the steering rack boots. So today I replaced the PSF4 fluid with Amsoil PS fluid. I suspect maybe some seals are leaking. Any good product I can use to maybe stop the leaks?

Had the car at the dealer over the weekend for oil change. Told them I was hearing a squeak when turning the wheel, not just when it is cold. Anyway they told me that my rack is leaking and they ordered a rack and P/S Pump for some reason? Does that seem normal at 38,000 miles. Also I asked if when they replace the rack do the align it, answer was no, even though parts are under warranty. I drive mostly highway but maybe 2 miles in the city where the roads have been pretty bad while construction is going on, Not sure if that hurt the rack or something else. The dealer hit me I think at 15,000 mi to change the P/S Oil for some reason, so it is all covered but I just think it is odd to go that suddenly. What next? I don't abuse the car at all.

When to the dealer today. There is a noise coming from the steering rack on my new Sonata 2009 2.4l. I made a short video to show it to the mechanic with the rattle sound coming from the steering rack. He pulled the car on a hoist and confirmed car need a new steering rack.

I just finished replacing the rack and pinion on a 98 Explorer 5.0 V8 AWD 4dr Eddie Bauer edition. My question is...Should the steering gear lower shaft set flush when it is connected to the Rack and pinion knuckle? I have some wiggle room but I think I have it as far down as I can get it. It is about 1/2" from setting flush on top of the knuckle. Once I tighten the bolt, it should hold, right?
It looks just like the picture on the right.....

Here are my questions.
1. What can cause repeated steering rack failures, which I am trying to dianose?
2. I found yellow spots in the snow that would come from the center of the vehicle (as opposed to near the wheels), could this be from the coolant system?
If you got that far, here is the relevant history. My wife drives my 2000 Jetta, its a nice car with repeated problems. One such problem is with the steering rack. 1. The steering rack failed in 2006, it was an expensive fix. It was leaking for a while, but I just topped off the fluid every couple of weeks. 2. Within a year the steering rack failed again, it was still under warranty. 3. 2 years later, the rack failed for a third time. I wrangled with the shop and they agreed to reduce my price for the fix even though the part was no longer under warranty. They had the car for a week trying to diagnose the problem, they said they found nothing out of the ordinary. I took the car to another mechanic a week later for some other issue, and he saw leaking from the fill plug--back to the dealer again. They said they cleaned the washers around the plug to fix the problem. No problems since then. Now its almost two years later and I have found a couple yellow spots in the snow, although near the center of the car and not near the wheels. This makes me think it may actually be a coolant leak, but I don't know right now.
