Passat (B5) :: Hesitation And Occasional Deceleration When Climbing On Steep
Sep 28, 2007
For no apparent reason, my 2001.5's 1.8T, with less than 67,000 mi on it, suddenly began "hesitating" when power was called for. I first noticed this while the car was climbing steeply one side of the (very tall) Newport Bridge. I could feel the occasional deceleration as I tried to maintain constant vehicle speed (with and without using cruise control), but could see no change in vehicle speed or engine rmp on either the speedometer or tachometer. It felt as if fuel flow to the engine had decreased a bit for a second or two and then returned. This occurs consistently and is most noticeable when accelerating from a dead stop as I'm climbing through the gears (manual transmission). Also, there's no apparent turbo boost. Are these classic symptoms of a failed turbocharger (or something else)?

I am having an engine temp issue when climbing steep hills. The gauge goes from normal to the red line but not into the red. The VDC OFF light is on but the CEL is not one. Once I reach the top of the hill the engine begins to cool off and returns to normal. Yesterday I had the radiator flushed and the thermostat changed. Am I looking at a water pump or head gaskets?

Ok...not sure were to go with this or how to explain it, while climbing a steep paved hill at 5-10 mph I get a rumbling vibration and noise. If I were to guess almost like axle wrap is causing the U Joints to bind or something. Runs and drives fine other then that. If I put it in 4x4 it does not happen, only seems to happen when wheels cant slip while climbing hills at LOW speed.
Don't notice it if climbing a dirt hill. There is a hill at the kids baseball fields that is steep and paved that its really bad on, way to busy right now to play on it to see what's happening. Tranny was looked at and oil changed.
New BDS 4" lift - had same issue prior to lift, though stock springs were worn.
Searched the form but really didn't come up with anything at this low of speed. While in Wisconsin the resort we were at the paved hills were so steep it felt like something was going to break. Put it in 4x4 and it was fine. This was with stock leafs.

Was climbing a steep hill at 35 mph just before truck down shifted to 2nd, I was hearing a pinging sound. Sounded like only I cylinder was doing so. What it could be. I am currently running a 1/4 tank of Fppf fuel injector cleaner. Is this a injector noise. No knocking just a slight pinging.

I have a 2005 Limited and when I start there's a slight hesitation then the power comes on. Also, when I let off the gas and the car slow's to about 20 and below there's a little "reverse surge." The power starting out and decel'ing isn't linear. It's got a little hiccup.

My "pride and joy", is sitting at the dealership. The car has been hesitating on acceleration, occasional it would also stall. According, to the dealership a faulty gas tank is the culprit. The tank has been ordered. Hopefully, i"ll have the car back in two weeks. What parts were replaced, to fix the problem??

My 2008 Honda Civic 1.8L LX surges forward when driving down circular parking garage ramp with foot on brake; otherwise, the only problem is occasional hesitation. What is the cause?

Over the past few months my '13 350 occasionally seems to hesitate when starting from a light, in a parking spot, in general no/low speed maneuvers. It doesn't do it every time, and it's not a hesitation with engine bucking, backfire, or noise. It just feels like the power takes a few seconds to come on when I hit the pedal. Sometimes. It has been interesting a few times on highway on-ramps...
At first I thought it was my accelerator technique, using the wrong foot angle, but I've been careful to apply the pedal correctly. Since it doesn't feel like the classic engine miss I was wondering if there are any other things to consider, such as transmission (hopefully a software update or something else simple) or anything else.

I've noticed that my 2012 Passat TDI heats up a bit when going over a steep hill or mountain pass. When driving up steep hills I notice that the temp gauge climbs from the dummy position 190* to about 200*. Once I crest the hill the temp will go down and it won't go up again unless I go up another hill. Is this normal? I had assumed that the temp gauge was a dummy gauge like in most cars so seeing the temp actually climb has me concerned.

I own a 2006 B6 and I'm just ticking down the list of common repairs... The last series started with boost lost anytime the car was pulling a steep hill or high acceleration. Eventually I lost boost altogether. I replaced the PCV valve and got back a little power but still no boost. This last weekend I replaced the DV valve. The old one was visually shot. The new one is the latest revision of that valve. Now, the boost will kick in, and cut out, kick in, cut out, in a rapid cycle during any acceleration. I double checked that it was installed and tightened (stripped the bolt heads) and reseated the electrical connection. I'm still getting the rough on/off of the turbo. If I slowly increase the acceleration it will act better, but that isn't a sure thing. I love the car, but I'm about to reach the point of pushing it off a cliff.

Much of the time the car starts right up as it should. But there are times when you turn the key and nothing - no movement, no noise, etc. The dash lights come up, nothing else.
At such times the car often will start after you wait 10 minutes or so and try again. Once it *does* start it does so pretty normally.
I've suspected either the transponder in the key or the clutch "lock" (manual transmission car) having an intermittent fault, but have not yet taken the car in for a full review. Given the sporadic nature of the problem I fear that the dealer won't be able to replicate the problem....
The battery is new, so that should not be a factor. My wife uses the car most of the time, and she's freaking out.

So I've been lowered on Neuspeed Sports and Koni Yellows for the past week now. I've noticed that when driving at about 60 mph or more on the highway I occasionally get a slight vibration from the steering wheel. It doesn't always happen and I do not know if it is partly due to the road surface. it does not seem so.
Is this just because I have lowered the car and have not yet gotten an alignment done? I'm waiting a few weeks for the suspension to settle before I do that. It does look like my front camber is off a bit, but it's hard to tell for sure. I haven't had this happen before, and it doesn't happen continuously. Will an alignment remedy this?

I'm still getting the occasional "slam" as I decelerate from freeway speeds as the trans downshifts from 4-3. Service writer says VW is aware of the problem and are working on a TCM reflash.

01 Passat v6 150K tiptronic. When cold, the tranny makes an occasional grinding noise however when at operating temp it runs fine with no slippage. Changed the fluid/filter and added lucas treatment. It worked a little but my mech said to warm up the car before driving. Might be the torque converter?

What is wrong with my Passat: once a week my car fails to start. When clutch is pressed and ignition key is turned I can hear relay under dash is clicking and nothing happening. It does not sound to me as starter (I hope). After a few seconds and few attempts car starts normally. I checked which relay is clicking and it was Relay # 53 (starting interlock relay), which linked to a clutch switch. Replaced this relay and after a week problem repeated.

Proud second owner of a nice passat wagon auto with 94k miles.. Slightly worsened the last 10k miles is an occasional clunk from up front, driver side..
What seems to happen is say slowing down to a red lite, when it suddenly turns green so the throttle input either causes an engine mount or something to do with second gear makes a clunk.. if I'm real smooth with the gas pedal I can avoid this noise.. and if I run the engine all out thru the gears I don't notice it.. The car is stock..

New to VW and to the Vortex. Last night I leased a 2012 Passat V6 SE, which is my first-ever DSG equipped vehicle. I am getting a significant hesitation on take off and also on rolling starts- almost like the power is being cut for half a second or so, accompanied by a little shudder. After that, it goes like gangbusters with fast and smooth shifts.
I understand the DSG functions differently than a conventional auto, but the delay is enough to affect my judgment in terms of pulling out into traffic. My salesperson told me that "they all do that" but I don't recall the issue in the others that I test-drove (may be due to limited driving time, last night was my first extended trip with the car). I also don't recall reading about this issue in any of the reviews of the V6 Passat.

Automatic with about 75k mils.
Car hesitates when pressing on the gas. I have to reach high speeds at a slow rate. If I want to push the car a bit, it will hesitate a lot around 2-2500 rpm.
Changed coil packs with new plugs. Dealer changed pcv valve changed by dealer, recall.
Car is stage 2 apr, full apr tbe, neuspeed intake, forge DV.
Could it be the MAF sensor, the DV, or cam follower failure?
Let me add, car is having horrible gas mileage.

So, there is a lot happening with the 3.6 hesitation fix lately. Haven't seen anything addressing the 2.0T hesitation. Mine has terrible throttle hesitation - have this problem with the 2.0T and/or looking for any fix? Love the feeling of making a lane change and almost getting smacked in the rear because of the lag ...

I have a 2008 Passat Komfort Wagon with the 2.0T. At 40,000 miles, yes it only has 40,000 miles, the thing started hesitating and misfiring on me only during heavy load. I ran the codes and it said #4 cylinder misfire. The check engine light was only on during the time it was misfiring and hesitating. Took it to the VW dealer to have them run it again and get guidance and they verified the #4. When I picked up the car the CEL was illuminated. They said it does it when it misfires. I explained that it was not on when I dropped it off and they basically said tough cookies. So I replaced the #4 coil pack and all 4 plugs. CEL light still on, but wasn't misfiring. Next day it began misfiring again under heavy load. Took to Autozone to run the codes and now says misfiring on all cylinders.

My 2001 VW Passat 1.8T manual transmission is experiencing loss of power/hesitation during acceleration. Occasionally the check engine light will blink for about 10 seconds during this time. My valve cover gasket blew about 7 months ago. I had it replaced along with 2 ignition coils. Since then I have had replaced the other 2 coils and spark plugs because of this recurring problem. I have also replace the mass airflow sensor for the second time. The diagnostic check continually shows misfires in different cylinders for which I again tried replacing the coils. I have also received the codes for "fuel mixture too lean" as well as for too rich. What could be causing this?
