I let my father use my 99 b5. He said it was driving normal, than all of a sudden it stopped moving, and started making a grinding sound from the front end. it goes into gear, but won't move. Is this the cv axle going bad or something else?
View 5 RepliesI applied brakes while car was moving slowly, less than 10 mph, and heard loud grinding sound coming from left front as car stopped. Shifted to reverse and car barely moved, less than 1 foot, which was accompanied by the loud grinding sound, then stopped. I could find nothing interfering with the wheels but did find pieces of brake pad on the ground along the path the left front wheel had followed. The left front wheel appeared as if the calipers were holding whatever remained of the brake pad and/or backing tight against the rotor. brake pad fell apart on 2002 at 43,561 miles...
View 19 RepliesI have a 2003 Ford F150 with a 5.4V8 Triton 4X4. The truck is about to roll over 200K here soon. I am feeling/hearing a vibration/grinding sound coming from the truck when I am moving slowly and making turns, either left or right turns. Seems to happen more so on left hand turns. I have changed all power train fluids and filter, and still does it. I do not feel or notice the vibration/grinding when I am going straight or at highway speeds. It is only when I am moving from a stop and making turns. How to diagnose, find out, repair, fix this issue?
View 4 RepliesI have a 2002 Nissan Sentra (manual transmission). I recently started noticing this horrible metal screech/squeal/scraping sound when my car starts moving from a stopped position. It's the worst when the car starts moving after it's been still for a bit. I thought it was due to the cold weather because when it started getting warmer, the noise issue went away. Unfortunately, the weather is warm, and it's back in full force.
The noise almost sounds like the noise that some semi-trucks (or large buses) make when they press on the brake. But my car only makes the noise when it starts moving and it only lasts a few seconds. It also doesn't happen every single time, which makes it even more frustrating.
I've got about 115,000 miles on the car...
Passat moving forward very slightly every few seconds while stopped with auto stop button engaged? It happened twice to me today on a flat surface.
View 7 RepliesI have a 2004 camry xle with a V6 motor and it had 38k miles on it. Recently I'm starting to hear a weird sound coming from the front passenger dash area during the initial move off. It will happened when I drive the car at a speed of 5-10 mph after it has been stationary for at least 4 hrs. The sound itself sounds like something is moving and follow by at "clunk" sound, indicating that it has seated properly. All this last for maybe 1-2 sec during the initial move off and did not return for the rest of the drive. This weird sound become slightly louder on colder temperature. The car runs well and shifts well.
I had my tranny flushed by a toyota dealership, rack and pinion replaced and passenger side drive shaft replaced, before this weird sound started.
I have an 03 Exp 4x4 Limited with 4.6L V8 with 167K on the clock. I'm getting a kind of humming rotating sound out of the front end when moving. The frequency definitely goes with the wheel rotation speed and the noise is the same with the trans engaged and when coasting in neutral. The noise is present at all speeds but becomes more of a humming sound as the speed increases at highway speed.
I've had both front wheel bearing hubs replaced (they were completely shot), brake pads and rotors replaced, and just had new tires. The rotating sound is still there though. What else is there that could be the cause? Is there another set of bearings somewhere in the front end?
I've got a 2010 3rd generation Prius II with about 38k miles. Earlier today when I was driving around town the car suddenly started making a sort of grinding sound, metal-on-metal sound.
To cut to the chase, I think I've narrowed it down to something in the front right wheel. When I got home I put the car in park and had someone rev the engine. The sound didn't manifest, so I think this rules out the engine, belts, etc.. It doesn't seem to appear until the car gets moving. Almost right away, even at low speeds, the sound crops up.
I had someone drive the car very slowly down the street as I walked around the car to try to pinpoint the location of the sound, and I'm fairly certain it's coming from the front right wheel. It's present even when driving straight, so it's not strictly related to turning, although it is audible when turning as well.
I am getting a grinding sound from what sounds like the front-left tire of my car.The car is a 2006 Scion tC - manual transmission.
It gets worse as the tire speed increases (not the engine speed and irrelevantly of whether the car is in gear), and seems to get worse when I turn left. I relaced my tires about two months ago and it started a few weeks later and seems to be getting worse.
Back in December i purchased a 2003 Impala LS. It has about 103,000 miles on it now. Overall the car runs and drives great. However on very rare occasions I have noticed if I have to slam on the brakes or really break hard I hear a grinding sound. Now I have only heard it maybe 3 times in the time since buying the car and never hear anything under normal braking. I had the brakes checked and was told they didn't see anything wrong, but what might cause this grinding sound I have heard a few times?
View 6 RepliesI have a 2005 Camry XLE. Since past few months I have started hearing a strange grinding / thumping noise from the front passenger side wheel. It can be clearly heard at slow speed and almost sounds like the wheel is lopsided and is rubbing against something. As the car picks up speed, the frequency picks up and the sounds disappears eventually.
So, I figured it must have been because the car had hit a curb few months ago and must have bent the rim. I had the wheels looked at while getting rotation and balancing done and was told that there is no rim damage. The sound went down a little after rotating the wheels but is still there. The mechanic doesn't think that it is the bearing because the sound disappears after moderate speeds. So, trying to figure out what could be causing the noise?
A little less than a month ago my wife's old 1999 Mustang had the tires replaced. Since that time there she has noticed two new sounds:The first is whirling/grinding sound coming from the front right wheel that comes and goes. The second is a low, loud groan that seems to come from the front of the vehicle when the brakes are applied. The groan varies in intensity but seems to always be present when the brakes are applied. The groan is not unfamiliar to anyone that's driven an older car, but it is much louder than I have ever seen on any other car (on the other hand I usually drive a Corolla so it may be normal on a V6 Mustang ).
The first sound seems to have been reduced but not eliminated since I followed the advice in this video below and pushed the plate behind the wheel back a bit with a screwdriver. Now it is only audible when the engine is off and the wheel is spun (in other words, when it is sitting on a jack and the wheel is spun by hand), but it is still there.
I took it into the shop where the tires were purchased and mounted. The good people at the shop did rotate and balance them, but both noises remain.
I looked at the calipers and discs and everything seems in order except (possibly) two things. The discs have rust around the edges not unlike the ones in this photo below and I have no clue if that is normal or a problem. The rust is present on all wheels and only the one makes that noise, so I think that may not be the source of the sound,. On the calipers some substance (paint?) is peeling off, but otherwise they look fine and again the same is true on all the wheels so it seems that is unrelated to the noise. I have not been able to get a look at the pad, so I don't know what condition they are in.
Other information: The serpentine belt was replaced a few days after the new tires were installed. The radiator was flushed at the same as the belt was changed. They also threw in an oil change and all the fluids checked at the same time. The tires are new Michelin Defender size 205 /65 R15 and all 4 tires are new. The engine is a V6 and the transmission is automatic.

View 1 RepliesI have a 2003 Impala. Over the past couple of months I have had an occurance every so often, very random with my front driver side brake. In both rain and dry conditions, braking hard and just slowing to break I will hear what sounds like grinding when I brake, like you do when the pads are gone. Well, I have had the car in and the pads and rotor are fine, the place I took it to even test drove it and tried but couldn't get the sound. I posted here a while back on this issue and the view was that it might be the ABS, but when this occurs the ABS light doesn't come on and the sound is just coming from the driver side front. What my next move should be?
View 7 Replies2004 Sienna LE with 193,500 miles. While driving home tonight I started hearing a grinding noise from the passenger front wheel. The noise goes away on acceleration and braking. Whenever I take my foot off the gas it starts to make the noise again. It sounds almost like a brake noise but I just replaced the caliper bracket this past weekend and the brakes look great (less than 20,000 miles on caliper, rotor and pads). I suspect a bearing may be going bad and want to know if these symptoms match a bad bearing. The wheel bearings are all original.

View 7 RepliesI have a 2012 Ford Focus which infrequently makes an odd grinding, scratching sound by the front LEFT tire/ axle. It only does it when turning to the RIGHT. It usually does it as I'm coming out of the turn, not into the turn; so when the tire is moving back into the straight position. It's just the sound, you can very slightly feel it when it happens but really no stability or other steering issues. What is causing this sound?
View 3 RepliesA few days ago I purchased a brand-new 2015 Santa Fe Sport 2.0T LTD, with about 80 miles on the odometer. During the test-drive, I noticed a rubbing/faint grinding sound which emanated from the right front corner, and only lasted a second or two. I was driving straight ahead at about 30mph on a relatively smooth paved road at the time.
The dealer told me they were aware of the noise, and claimed a small stone was to blame. (it had been test driven a number of times). I was assured that the problem would be fixed when I picked up the car.
On the drive home from the purchase, it did it again, and has done it every day that I've driven it. (about 150 miles on it now). Are these wheels susceptible to having stones lodged in them?? (assuming that's actually what's causing the noise).
About 3 months ago I started having a grinding sound from the front driver side hub area. I replaced it and it fixed the problem. I read where you should do both because he other one is soon behind it but I waited. Now I started hearing it from the passenger side too. So I replaced it today and all was good until I tested it from 4 wheel back to 2 wheel. Once I went back to 2 wheel the clicking that sounds like bearings going out to me, was back. What is it?
View 1 Replies2008 Passat Komfort Wagon with 34,500 miles. Started to get grinding sound when I applied brakes, which diminishes as I drive. Thought it was rust, but sound is very loud and sounds just like pads are gone and digging into rotors. The brake warning light is not on.
Dealer told me rear caliper was closing unevenly and recommended service---not covered by warranty of course. When I picked-up car same noise as before. The service manager told be that the car was just washed and the rust built up in the last hour---I could believe some built-up, but the sounds made my teeth ache. When we went for a test drive the noise got quiter, but was still apparent. The SM told me this is a "normal" noise. I have had many cars with disc brakes, dating back to a 1960 Jaguar; none have made this "normal" sound.
I just recently bought a 2000 Explorer, 4.0 OHV, 4x4 with about 150,000 miles.
I've had the vehicle for about a month, and ever since I bought it, it's had a grinding sound (sounded like wheel bearing) coming from the front right side. I replaced both right and left bearing/hub assemblies, and took it out for a drive. The initial sound that I thought was bearing noise is still there, and at about 65mph I started to get a little bit of steering wheel shake. I took my foot off the gas and it stopped. I accelerated up to about 70mph and it seemed ok.
I hit a VERY small bump in the road and the steering wheel started shaking like hell. So bad that I almost lost control. I slammed the brakes and the shake stopped instantly. I took it home and put it up in the air, half expecting to see something loose or broken, and everything looks perfect. I re-torqued everything that I had taken apart for the initial hub/bearing replacement, and took it out again. Same issues.
I never had ANY of these problems before I replaced the hub/bearing assemblies, so I'm completely confused. I was thinking CV joints, but I have no clicking at all when turning, in forward or reverse, everything is smooth. Outer tie rods were done about 6 weeks ago..
