Passat (B5) :: Engine Light Keeps Coming On
Jun 19, 2007
I have a 2001.5 Passat B5.5 2.8L . I recently had a secondary air pump replaced about 3 weeks ago. Every 4 or 5 days the engine light comes on. I am not sure what the code is, but is says flow to low. I have had it back to my mechanic 3 times and the pump is working properly and the car drives fine. Engine light that keeps coming on?

I am getting a check engine light about every 4 days. It is stupid suff like secondary air, or catalytic below efficency... Is there any way to prevent the light from coming on over these faults? I think it would cost me some serious money to fix everything it needs to keep the light from coming on. As you all know, once you fix one thing something else breaks.

How to reset my check engine light as well as how I can figure out what is causing the light to continue to come on. Can't keep going to the dealer to spend $ to have it turned off.

I have about 75K on my 03 1.8t on started having the check engine light coming on in the last few months. The dealers diagnosis was that I wasn't tightening the gas cap enough but I don't believe that because I do at least 3-5 clicks when I close it. I'm a bit baffled. After the last time I filled up at the gas station, I noticed the cap was loose so I've ordered another cap thinking the last one has lost its ability to seal properly...

I recently had some work done on my 2001 1.8t Passat. All new vacuum hoses & camshaft tensioner replaced by VW dealer. Check engine light is coming on and an independent shop near read out a code: Bank 1 mixture adaptation(multi): System too lean.
What does this mean??? And could this relate to these parts being replaced??? Work was done approx 2000 miles ago.

While I am driving the car it will start to die and skip. Happens randomly. Today I was driving up a small hill and it went quits on me started lurching with check engine light coming on and off. The car will turn over and start, but only for a few seconds before dying again.
Seems to happen when the car is running for a while. Also the ABS light flashes on then off randomly while driving sometimes although It hasn't been an issue. Will be checking tomorrow to see if it starts.

The car keeping throwing a CEL every 2-3 weeks, but turns off in a day or two. I know this stays lit for a while even if there is nothing wrong, is it a mileage or engine cycle thing? Also, how long is this CEL stored in the computer for the dealer to recall?

I have a 2001 Passat wagon V6 with 4 motion, and the generator light keeps coming on randomly while driving. When it comes on, the power steering stops working. Once I turn off and on the car, the light goes out and the car runs normally again. I have replaced the serpentine belt, tensioner and pulleys, and they are all fine.

Why the check fuel cap light keeps coming on?

This started about 2 weeks ago. Every time I get gas, I fasten the gas cap tightly, and then go to start my car and it won't start. It won't turn.
I'll try once or twice, and then sit for a few minutes. Then I try again, and it'll turn and catch, but then sputter for a minute and I have to keep pressing the gas pedal..after a minute of this, it'll run OK.
Not sure if its related, but the check gas cap light keeps coming on.

I just had an oil change over the weekend at a dealership in D.C., and now with the car on D, stopped at a light, there is a noticeable rattling coming from the engine bay.
Also, I have some error codes on my computer, but when I mentioned it to the dealer, they said they could only look at it if I paid the diagnostic fee.

My "99 1.8T Passat has 92K miles. The past few weeks, the check engine light started to come on and I need to refill at least a liter of oil since the dipstick is showing I am low on it. What the problem is? Will it be an expensive fix? The car is still running great...just using up a lot of oil.

I am thinking about buying a family member's 1999 1.8T Passat which has an intermittent engine issue. Here's the symptoms: After coming to a stop the engine will sometimes bog down and refuse to rev when given gas. Turning the engine off then on again will set the engine back to running properly. The frequency with which this happens is random but it seems to happen only when the engine is warmed up. A local shop that looked into it couldn't find any issues but did report that there were no engine codes. Hopefully is something simple like TB cleaning or replacing items like MAF or IAC.

I have a 2000 Passat w V6 thats in the shop at the dealers. The ABS/Brake light in the dash is coming on. The dealer says I need a new sensor in the ABS module. This sensor cost $700 plus about $400 in labor. Seems very pricey to me. My question is, could I buy a used ABS module and replace the bad one with the bad sensor myself? Where could I get a used or new ABS module at a good price? Is it hard to change out?

When I'm driving the ABS/Brake lights come on at random and beep at me in my 1998 passat... I'm not sure why, and there should be no reason.. my brakes work fine and haven't been a problem... I never slam on my brakes either...the only thing wrong is that I have a brake light out but that shouldn't be it.... Is there something obvious that I'm missing??

I bought a 2002 W8 92k Miles from a dealer for a very cheap price, KBB 9k, i paid 2k because there was a engine knock *gasp* i know. The body/interior is in good shape. From what I was told the noise was coming from the 'upper' part of the engine..I was hoping it was probably a bad lifter, not a big problem. So the car was trucked to me yesterday, it drives fine still but the engine noise was more severe than i thought. I'm 95% sure it's a spun rod bearing. I'm stressing .
I own a 2 ton gray monument. I cant spend that much money right now on just an engine and a rebuild might be just as expensive. I'm hoping (I need to stop that) that maybe i can drop the oil pan, inspect/remove the rod caps and maybe replace the bearings or push the pistons out the top. In my mind I know the crankshaft was probably scared too but im keeping my hopes high that it wasnt. If thats the case then the whole engine will need to be removed.
I know it not a good idea to buy a car with a knock but that was the condition or the purchase. I want to atleast try to get an idea of the work needed before considering parting it out.
