I went to start my car this morning it cranks and nothing it is not firing at all, and I do not hear the fuel pump when I open the door like I usually do. It just happened all the sudden. Is there a way to check fuel pressure in these in the W8? Also any known problems to make them do this? So irritating...
View 4 RepliesBeen having issues the past month with the car taking a couple times to start. It's very sporadic. Sometimes I'll only have this issues once a week. Sometimes once every other day.
Engine cranks it's just not firing. Almost like what would happen if you were out of gas. Sometimes it takes 2-3 times. Just yesterday it took about 5-6 times. Once started though the car seems fine. Drives fine, haven't really noticed any hesitation nor has it died while driving.

Changed the fuel filter when i noticed it happening and ran some fuel treatment cleaner in it.
We took it into the shop and of course every time they checked it out it started up fine. even left the car there for 2 days and started up fine for them. They said they couldn't really diagnose it as it seems ok to them.
Fuel pump going bad? Fuel pressure regulator going bad? Crankshaft position sensor going bad?
So heres the deal 1989 civic dx hatchback 106k on the odometer automatic 1.5l d15b2 engine . It's been having delayed starts taking 3 to 6 cranks before firing up then running fine, suddenly it dawned on me maybe it was the distributor , so I swapped it with a spare I had because sure enough the old one had red death red dust in the cap. Cleaned the contacts set the timing reassembled, some wires broke on the back of the wiring harness to the distro. Rewired them, the car kept getting worse I jumped it and took it to my friend a vw mechanic it drove 49 miles there fine after the jump, new plugs new wires new fuel filter we did the wire job set the timing checked the timing belt got the battery tested and the alternators new and did a oil change also did a coolant flush a few weeks ago.
It started right up drove it back to Chicago , in the morning I was getting off the highway it stopped running no noises I pulled over 8 cranks later it started parked it 3 blocks away, went to test drive it when I stopped at a light it shut off cramming it and hitting the gas pedal got it to start drove it a block down it shut off at a stop sign and I parked it. What it is I'm throwing code 8 which is a top dead sensor which I think is in the distro which I replaced a month ago. Fuel pump sounds like its priming but you have to gas it and crank it to start it which is odd for a automatic , it is girk injected is this tds sensor going to do that by itself? Or could it be a ignition module? ( what I read online) starter? Main relay , fuel pump switch?
When I turn the key to start the engine, it makes the sound (I don't know what to call it) that it makes before the engine actually starts but it just keeps doing that. The dash has the battery light on in red so I think that might be the problem. It also flashed "STOP" at me on the dash so I stopped fiddling with it.
The dealership is only a few blocks away but they are closed until tuesday. What is usually the problem in this case? I know almost nothing about how cars work.
2001 passat, 1.8, manual 140K. Last Wednesday I went to drive south, and i turned the key. The engine cranked but it didn't start. After trying for a few minutes, and the engine stumbling after a few times, the engine started. RPMs were low, but after a few seconds everything was fine. The outside temp was probably 15-20f.
Over the next few days the car sat, except for once where I moved the car (outside temp was 35+), and it started right up. As soon as the temperature dropped to 18 or so, it did the same thing, crank and crank then start. I dont remember if it was then or wednesday when I got a CEL while trying to start the car. I checked it and got a P0321. Cleared it and havent seen it since.
Fast forward to sunday, morning was the same thing, about 10 tries until the engine started. I got a jump start in the afternoon thinking it was the battery. It started right up (temp was 30+?). The next day I decided to roll start it, started right up (temp was 15?).
I replaced the battery monday thinking that was the cause. But everything is the same, when its cold I have to crank and crank. Once the car is running, the RPMs are low. If I give it gas, it stalls. Once the RPMs come up, if I stop the engine, it starts right back up. Thinking it is a fuel problem, I played with the fuse.
Granted, the engine was warm when I did this. Engine running. Pull fuse out, after a few seconds engine stalls. Try to start, no go. Put fuse back in, engine starts right up on first try. So now we go back the CEL. I thought at first it was just a side effect of cranking and cranking the engine. But now I think there might be a problem with a sensor, engine speed sensor maybe? Coolant? crank?
My wife went to use our 2004.5 Passat V6 4Motion and it takes quite a few cranks for the engine to turn over and start. It sounds like the battery is losing it's charge. When running, none of the idiot lights show anything.
I have a couple questions: Could the alternator be damaged and isn't charging the battery or is it possible for the battery to be going after only 4.5 years?
If it's just the battery, how easy is it to replace? I've done them on previous cars, but with all of the electronics and stuff, I'm concerned since it's behind the firewall and I've read stories about it losing all of the electronics. I couldn't see an easy way to remove it, but I didn't spend much time looking.
Lately my '03 1.8t with 90k has taken to long cranking before firing.Once it fires, it runs rough for about two seconds and then smooth as usual. Thought it might be Fuel pump relay but I'd think that'd show a fault light. Same with Fuel pump?No faults showing up. Plugs changed 9k ago. Only run Premium Shell.
View 1 RepliesRecently my F150 has had issues starting in the mornings. It is in an insulated garage. It takes about 10 cranks before it fires. Then it struggles to run like its not getting fuel for a second or two, then rpm's jump to 1200 and has a slight miss for another second or two, then it smooths out and is fine. Leaving my driveway it will have a miss around 2000rpm for about two seconds then the truck will run perfect the rest of the day. It can sit outside in the cold for 10 hours while i am at work and will fire right up and run great. The issues only happens in the morning.
All the plugs were changed about 6 months ago. Fuel pump and fuel pump drive module were changed about 3 weeks ago. The check engine light has come on twice. The first time I didn't have access to a code reader and since the truck started right away and then died instantly i figured that was why the light came on, so i disconnected the battery and re-connected it. Light didn't come back on for a week. Second time code was for misfire on cylinder 5. I am changing the fuel filter this week. If that doesn't work i was gonna change the #5 coil.
2004, DWR, 4x4, 6.0 PSD. One day he started the truck moved it 100' shut it off and the next day it would crank over but not fire. It will fire and run rough if you give it a shot of starting fluid. It shows codes P0401, P0275,P0528, P132B.
View 14 RepliesI've got an 87 ford ranger 4x4. The truck won't start. The ignition is firing off with the key on engine off. When I got the truck the transfer case was blown. The people I got the truck from drove it to here it sat. I check the wiring but the transfer case to make sure it diet get damaged causing a sort. When I got the pcm was missing. Took one out of a bronco 2 and changed the relays on the fender. Here what I've done so far

I Have a 93 bronco with a5.8 the truck will start up and run fine for a while and then the engine gets really ruff starts back firing and shuts off it only starts with starting fluid or after it sits for about 30 mins.
View 7 RepliesWe have a 2001 passat 1.8T It has had problems starting up for over 1 year. My wife drives the car so I only notice issues with it when we go together in her car. When I first noticed the problem, it was that it took a couple more cranks before it would start and didn't always happen. Now I notice that it won't start on the first try no matter how long it cranks, try again and it starts right up. The only thing I have not done as far as tuneup is the PCV valve that I have not figured out where it is.

No smell of fuel in engine compartment. Disconnect MAF, no difference. This started over a week ago. The car would not start on the first try. Always on the second try. Once started the car ran fine, did not stall or hesitate. Then, just once, it almost did not start; I think it was the fourth try it finally started. View 3 RepliesMy cousin has a 99 1.8T passat and its been sitting for a bit so initially I thought it was the battery but it is fine. The car cranks and it turns over but it will not start. It was fine than it was left for a few days when it was cold and has not started since.
I am not too farmiliar with the 1.8T .... I pulled out the dipstick and found the oil to be a little cloudy, that got me worried but last time it was driven the car was fine. It also looks kinda green but I am not sure if its the coolant since the coolant in the reservior is red or maybe orange.
I've been fighting several problems with this car (1998 1.8t aeb 5 speed manual) I replaced the icm and coil packs just recently to fix an ignition problem. At least i thought the problem was fixed. Car was running good but still had an occasional loss of power and bucking.
Today I installed a new fuel filter and went for a drive to see if that fixed the problem. I get about a mile from my house and the car died at a stop sign. I tried several times to start it back up and nothing. I pushed it off to the side and left it there for the night, I'll go back in the morning to try to trouble shoot it.
Symptoms: I noticed that when I turned the key to the on position, the fuel pump relay would click and doesn't stop unless i turn the ignition off. The throttle body is also actuating at the same time, idle stabilizer? But its doing this with the engine off and key in on position. Also there is fuel pressure at the rail.
What would cause this? My only thought would be a failed ecu or possibly fuel pump relay (though I don't see how that would effect the throttle body).
I got a 05 Passat I am working on. The car was being drove and my customer when to eat lunch. Came out side and didn't start. Got it to my house threw it on the scanner and it brought up 2 cam sensor codes. Replaced them and still nothing. What to try next. The car cranks over fine and it does have fuel pressure and also has spark.

View 1 RepliesI have a 99 Town car and have problems starting when it is cold (under 20 degrees). The engine cranks. If I jump it it will start after about 30 cranks then it runs fine. Looks like a lot of carbon being blown out the tail pipe. When it is warmed up it starts fine and runs fine, just won't start early in the morning when it is 10 degrees outside.
View 4 RepliesI just purchased an '01 Elantra a few days ago. The car starts and runs when the engine is cool, although it hesitates during acceleration, and when it's warm outside it bounces between 1000 and 2000 RPM in neutral and park. The last day or so it's been chilly and the idle has been steady, but low (500 RPM). Once the engine warms up, however, if you shut it off for a few minutes and try to restart it cranks but won't start until the engine cools off.
The previous owner replaced the fuel pump, cam sensor, crank sensor, spark plugs and wires, and I replaced the intake gasket and the idle air control valve, all with no effect. I can hear the fuel pump when I key it on, and I've checked for spark at each of the plugs, and even pulled the injectors and cranked it a few times to be sure that they were firing. Everything seems to be in working order.
