Passat (B5) :: Clunk When Going Into Reverse - Transmission Maintenance?
Apr 9, 2007
I have a 2000 Passat 1.8T with the 5 speed automatic. Bought it four months ago; it now has 188,000 miles on it. According to the service records, (The car has full records and was always serviced by one dealer) the transmission fluid has never been changed. This makes me a little crazy, as the manual recommends a 60k interval.
BUT, the dealer says this is no longer recommended, the transmission shouldn't be touched except to check the level. Two other dealers agree. I've also asked a few independent shops, and everyone says if it's gone this long, changing it would probably cause the transmission to malfunction. They say leave it alone as long as it lasts.
The transmission seems to work fine, with two possible exceptions: The first couple of shifts when cold are slightly harsher than when warm; and twice (in 6,000 miles) I got a noticeable "clunk" when going into reverse.

I just recently bought a 95 F150 with a 351. The truck has high mileage, about 190k, and I am not sure how long the transmission has left. It rides smooth down the road, but when I put the truck into reverse it hesitates for a moment then makes a loud clunking sound(as if a door is being slammed) and then jerks into gear. The reverse works great at the moment though. Should I be worried, is there anything I can do to fix this?

V6 A/T ... So to start ball joints, control arms, tire rods are all good as are suspension bushings.
So when driving, if I stop at a light and go to leave theres a slight clunk front the front when first pressing gas or if I am on a hill and pul it in reverse theres often a clunk. Definitely when the cars cold and go from reverse to drive.
Motor mounts?
Torque converter?
There are no shifting issues, tranny works just fine.

So a friend of mine has a 01 Passat 1.8 T (Automatic). He is having some reverse issues. It shifts into reverse with a hard clunk then the second you touch the gas it clunks into neutral. The odd part is if you put it in reverse and stay off the gas it will idle back in reverse... But the second you touch the gas nothing. I'm finding it hard to believe the transmission is gone because every other gear is beyond smooth (I mean like brand new car smooth).

I bought my '07 Passat 2.0T Wagon as a CPOVW 6 weeks ago. It had 4700 miles on it. I complained about the transmission having a delayed engagement when shifting into reverse and drive. (it drives normally however with positive shifts and is very enjoyable) I was told it was normal and not to worry. (could it be designed-in to soften the engagement?).
This week I noticed a light "thunk" in the right front when re-applying power while coasting below 40 MPH. I never noticed it before but I usually strive for smooth driving so that may be why. I've had other Aisin Warners but they were in Volvos. I got out of a '99 Volvo Cross Country because I didn't trust the driveline. Am I going down the same road?

Transmission problem, will not shift lever. If car moves while on P, then the interlock will not disengage. I car doesnt roll at all it will allow me to shift gears but if the cars rolls just one inch then i cant shift gears. Already replace brake sensor.

I don't know if this all started right after I got back from towing a 3500# lathe + 2000# trailer back from Texas a couple weeks ago or if there might have been some slight symptoms before. I do know that this really got bad a couple days ago and I haven't driven the truck since then.
So, here's what is happening. I noticed a few days before that when I would back out of a parking space, the truck didn't seem to go right into reverse. It was as if it was in neutral, but as I was reaching to jiggle the gearshift lever, it would engage and I could back out just fine. All forward gears, and shifting, have been fine all along, including lockup. I kind of wondered if the shift linkage had somehow moved and was on the edge of being in the right spot, so I was going to have a look at it one evening soon. Then a couple days ago, I went to back out of a parking spot at work and it wouldn't go anywhere.
Just acted like it was in neutral. Put it in drive and it engaged just fine, then back to reverse and nothing for a few moments before it finally engaged. Then, as I was backing up, it acted like you might expect a limited slip that was not slipping to behave. But, that was right before I put it in drive and went home. After I got home, I tried it out some more and found that in reverse, it just wouldn't go anywhere unless the truck rolled a little bit. I don't know if the rolling really had anything to do with it or not, but the driveway is on a slight incline, so it happened, and then the transmission would engage. But, when it did start to back up, even straight, at first it acted like it was under a load, then when it started to move, it bucked really badly. Put it back in drive and all seems fine.
There are no codes set. Trans fluid is full, and doesn't smell or look bad. I've searched for reverse shudder, and other stuff, and there are threads about the TC, about no reverse at all, and a bunch of other stuff, but nothing like this that I found.

I've been noticing when going in reverse and then braking, when then going forward and braking there is a clunk which seems to come from the front brakes. Is this normal? Shifting of the pads in the caliper?

So I noticed my Treg makes a clunk when I break when backing up. If I hit the gas, then brake, 'clunk'. Sounds like its coming from the rear or undercarriage. Hopefully not serious but its going in for service soon.

I got a 99' Jetta gls 5 spd. I just replaced the transmission and now the car won't engage reverse from inside the cockpit. Reverse can be engage from inside the engine bay, but when the shift knob is depressed nothing happens. Linkag cables are in the correct spots.

I get an audible 'clunk' whenever I brake while in reverse. The sound reminds me of my old 4X4 when I would back up to take it out of 4 wheel drive. I searched for some existing posts but didn't get the keywords right or they don't exist.

I'm taking possession of my new GTI 2013 4dr Dsg next Wednesday.
I actually own a 06 Audi A3 3.2 dropped with ST Coilovers that impressed me at the beginning in term of comfort BUT I don't want another experience with those coilovers (clunking noise, reverse brake).
I am hesitating with many combination.
My needs: get rid of the horrible wheel gap AND maintain the best daily ride comfort 'cause I live in Quebec and I can not count anymore the potholes and patches on the roads....
The setups I am hesitating with:
-I LOVE how the H&R Supersports sit, that IS the drop level I want. And If I go with them, I would also buy some adjustable koni yellow. *I worry about the comfort*
-DG springs *worry to almost not see the difference between DG and stock look*
-VWR springs *worry about getting the reverse rake I am afraid of*
with DG or VWR springs I would conserve the stock shocks, because I guess those springs are not so low to need shorter shocks.

The car is manual, 95.000 KM. The problem is everytime i put the car in gear and start rolling, I hear a loud thump/clunk coming from the underside of the engine.
The only mods on the car are intake, a tune and a dog bone insert. The clanking is way more apparent when i'm in reverse. Whether i'm backing out of my uphill driveway or on a flat surface, EVERYTIME the car is at a dead stop and I give it throttle, something clanks...
My mechanic had lifted the car. He thought it might have been suspension, but he ruled that out. He believes that it is in fact the dog bone insert that is faulty. Upon further inspection, the red insert (from USP I believe) had cracked. although the insert was visibly broken (I've had it for barely 5000 km's, WTF) I'm not entirely sure that that is what's making the clunking sound because that sound was there from before I had put the dog bone insert in place.

I have a 1999 chevy malibu with a 2005 chevy impala motor in it. Recently I put my car into reverse and it made a hard clunk and went into reverse. Later on that day I tried to go into reverse and it will not reverse. I had to have 3 people push my car back in neutral. However, in neutral I am able to press on the gas and drive forward... This is an automatic transmission. Am I just screwed and need a brand new transmission?

On my 2003 6.0l Excursion, the 5R110 is having some issues with reverse lately. Sometimes when you put it in reverse it doesn't actually engage. The only way to make it "fall" into gear is by giving it a little fuel, which then sends it into reverse. Now here me out, I'm not hitting 3,000rpms when I do this, just a light raise in rpms will get it in gear. Solenoid issue, possibly?
I haven't noticed if it does this when it won't go into reverse or if it does it no matter what, but it will make a light clunk when going forward after using reverse. A very light, but noticeable clunk. Is this most likely a U-Joint related issue? Got under it and moved the driveshaft around, didn't notice any play at all, but perhaps I wasn't checking properly (wiggling it left and right).
Excursion is RWD (2WD) and has right around 183k miles on it, acquired in October with 172k miles, so not positive on previous history of the transmission. Also I know my gear selector mount is broke, so it cluster is off, but I certainly don't think that, in of itself, is the cause of my issues. Maybe I'm wrong?

I just had the motor torque and strut mount fixed and was told that I have an exhaust leak flex pipe. My problem is I'm still getting a clunk when shifting into reverse doesn't happen all the time but it is concerning plan to have flexpipe fixed in the near future. will that take care of the clunking sound or is it something else? don't have a lot of cash to work with right now.

Recently, when turning while the car is in reverse, I started noticing a popping sound coming from the area near my right front tire. Now, when I accelerate quickly from a dead stop or drive away after being stopped on a hill, I'm hearing that same popping/clunk noise from the right front tire. When I'm stopped at a light and then take my foot off the brake, wait a second, and then gently accelerate, I don't hear it. I've had a couple of mechanics take a look at the cv boot for the right front tire, but they tell me that it's not cracked or broken. Is it possible that the cv joint has gone bad, but the boot is not broken? Or, is there something else going on?

i am wondering if any other touareg v-10 owners have experienced what i call "slop in the drivetrain"?symptoms: when just crawling off from a dead stop and then letting off of the pedal i can both hear and feel a little clunk whether forward or reverse. its real subtle but its always there if you listen for it. Is this just what they call normal "slash" of the worm gears in the differentials? i would hate to find out later once warranty's gone that i should have done something about it earlier? i have 19,000 miles on it, 70%highway and 30% city driving.

I only notice this when I back the car from the garage and come to a stop before going forward. It is a very metallic clunk. It sounds like its coming from the rear passenger side but I am. not 100% certain. It happens when I actually stop before switching to drive.
It is a 2013 Two. 30,000 miles on it.

I have a 93 ford escort which makes a clunking noise if I shift into reverse without letting the car warm up and idle down. It sounds as if the noise is coming from the front passenger side wheel well. The sound does not occur when shifting into reverse if the car is allowed to warm up and idle down to 1100 rpm. What's up?
