Passat (B5) :: Chattering Noise That Gets Faster As Speed Increases
Feb 1, 2007
I recently had my 2002 1.8T in for clutch replacement at the dealer and they came back and said the crankshaft was bad ( the car was occasionally making noise when pushing the clutch in, they thought it was a throwout bearing) I took the car back to bring it back to an indie, and it is loud at idle and while accelerating (sounds like a chattering noise that gets faster as speed increases) It's now sitting in the parking lot. My question is, am I going to have to put in a whole new engine to fix this problem? can just a crankshaft be replaced?

This week I noticed a sound that sounds low that increases then the vehicle goes faster and decreases when it slows down. It is not wheel bearing noise. Took a doctors type scope and put it on the pulleys listening for the bearing noise in each pulley and found my alternator pulley making more noise than usual, My car needs new accessory belts so I ordered 3 new belts and will be replacing them soon. I am hoping the noise is from worn belts and not the alternator. If it is the alternator its going to cost me 250 bucks for a rebuilt one. I'm not sure if I can tear the alternator apart and replace the part bearing part. Have to look into this. Is this normal for a car with 161 thousand klm for accessory belt bearings on items to start to go bad? I sure hope the water pump and power steering and ac compressor and ac tensioner last. These all have bearings in them as well.

My 2000 1.8t passat is quiet sick and i am unsure of where to start. here are the symptoms:
- rough idle for a minute or two when started cold
- occasional erratic idle
- low power
- the CEL would blink for 10-20 seconds on startup
- checked and cleared the codes at autozone, and now the car seems to be in limp mode. engine has NO power, cannot get speed above 20, misfires
when you try to go faster
Where are the codes that were stored:
-P1136 Air/fuel metering
- P1128 Air/fuel metering
- P0507 Idle control system, RPM high
- P0300 Random Misfire
- P0301 Cyl. 1 misfire
- P0302 Cyl. 2 misfire
- P03011 Cyl. 4 Misfire

My 2000 B5 1.8t began getting the Low Oil Pressure warning light over the winter, and has gotten progressively worse. I added a mechanical oil pressure gauge and I'm seeing about 20 psi on a cold engine at idle. If I rev to ~2500 the pressure DROPS to between 5 and 10 (and triggers the STOP! light).
I tried a bottle of autoRX, but probably too late- I could only run about 200 miles before the STOP! light wouldn't allow me to get out of the driveway.
What might cause the pressure to DROP as engine speed increases? a Clogged screen or worn pump possibly? It would be nice if it was something I could correct without pulling the engine (but I'm not expecting that).

Over the past 2 weeks, started having a whining noise from front end. It seems to be coming from the front passenger side. The noise starts at around 30 mph and increases with speed. Very noticeable at highway speed. Sounded a bit like tire noise. I did rotate the tires, front to back, but noise persists from the front.

I recently purchased new tires and rims for my Mazda 626 thinking it would get rid ot the loud tire noise (2 rims were bent). However, the noise still exists. I cannot seem top pin point the source of the noise but, it increases with speed.

Starting at about 30mph there's a humming noise that gets louder as speed increases. It doesn't seem to change if I am steering right or left and i have no steering wheel shake or any sort of noticeable bumping at 60mph. Could this just be my tires making noise, they are quite worn by now.

2003 Subaru Forester with 130,000 miles. We put new tires on two months ago and when I started hearing the wah, wah, wah noise coming from the back of the car (rhythmic - increases with speed of car) I assumed on of the new tires was bad. It isn't. Also pulled the brake drums and cleaned everything there up.... What this might be?

Recently I have been hearing a humming noise that increases with speed. I don't get it when the car stops. I think it's coming from the rear but only when the car is moving and steadily increases in volume as speed increases and comes down as speed comes down. It's not coming from engine or transmission but coming from the rear wheels. Could it be a bearing? or both bearings? Is hard to make out if it's left or right of the windows when the windows are closed. Car drives great and has mileage in the 80's

When turning in both directions, front end makes a CHEEP-CHEEP-CHEEP-CHEEP-CHEEP sound. Frequency increases when speed increases.Brakes are NOT engaged when this happens. Goes away when coming out of turn.
I am sure the problems could be multiple, but what is your first thought? Not that it matters, but its a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer.

I have the Golf 2.5 just under 5K miles with the 15" steel wheels and just recently I've noticed a clicking noise on both the drive and passenger sides. The frequency of the noise increases as I increase speed so I assume it is a tire/wheel issue. Sounds like its coming from the back but hard to tell.

My LS 460 has a pulsing wheel/front end noise that seems to increase as the speed increases from 5 mph to about 30mph and then fades out. I brought it in for service and they test drove it twice with 1 and then 2 service techs. They could hear the noise and said to me that they think it is cupping on the tires. The tires are in great condition inside to outside.Tires have only 14000 K. I switched the back to the front. The same dut-dut-dut-dut sound increases as the speed increases to about 30mph.
I believe that the noise is something more serious. I noticed that when the suspension compresses over a high point in the road at say 20mph the sound will stop during the time the car is comming of the high point in the road. Could this be a bearing/suspention- or something with the breaking motor because I also have been using the break hold feature for several months and not sure if that could cause harm. Also I do hear more grind or grumbling when turning the wheel to the left at low speed then when turning to the right.

I just replaced the rear pads and rotors with no issues other than having to bang the cr@p out of the left rotor with a hammer to get it to come off. Now at pretty much all speeds I am hearing a rythmic humming-type sound that increases and decreases with vehicle speed. It's not a constant hum but more like one-hum-per-tire-revolution type of sound. It is coming from the left side as far as I can tell.
Thinking I had damaged the wheel bearing (and after searching the forums extensively) I replaced it with a brand new bearing from Advance Auto Parts. I re-checked the pads, rotors, all bolts, everything is lubricated properly, etc. Just took it out for a test drive and the noise is still there. Sometimes it gets louder when breaking but not always. I rotated tires and the sound did not follow the tire. The pads aren't stuck or rubbing excessively as far as I can tell.
This sort of thing has happened in the past on the left rear. It would sometimes happen when I swapped the summer tires for my winter tires on steelies, the left rear would make the humming sound, I'd take the wheel off and put it back on 180 degrees rotated and the sound would go away. I've done that a few times too and it has not worked.

I recently bought a 2009 es 350, it had 88K km on it (55k miles) and i seem to have a rhythmic road noise. it increases with speed until it becomes constant. So it's obviously the tires (getting old or need balancing) or a bearing..
Being new to these cars I'm not sure and the whole car is very quiet so any noise seems to be more noticeable.
My tires are the OEM energy's...which I've heard aren't too great. They have decent thread tho, however one sidewall looks as if it's wearing away. Could it be the tires? When do the bearings wear out on these cars - I seem to think that 90K is a bit too soon for bearings..

I'm looking at a dirt cheap Explorer 4.0, has been sitting for 2 years. Runs nice, with a double "knock" noise but quieter than a rod knock. Idles smooth at 600 rpm, "knock" is consistent, but increases as engine increases speed. Has 2 year old oil, and 2 year old gas. Would a tune up support it, and revitalize it, or is the engine almost dead. Still drives, didn't push it to hard. Interior is 9/10, exterior is 10/10. I have him down to 600. 4x4 works, and feels good.

My i40 (18 months old and already on it's 5th problem) has just developed an enormous noise (thud thud thud) when going over 15mph and gets faster with speed. If I go into neutral and turn the engine off at speed it is still there. The crazy thing is as soon as I veer or turn right it stops but when I turn left it does not stop. It's really lot and I can feel it through my feet and on the steering wheel. I am taking it into Hyundai (again) but I'd like to understand possible issues before I go in.

I have a 2002 passat 1.8T 78000 miles well maintained and oil changed every time with synthetic, when i seem to be going at lower speeds the turbo makes a weird chattering noise.only when i am light on the throttle.

Thats the sound coming from I think the front left area and the rate is proportional to speed. It only occurs at slow speed from about 5 to 15 mph and it seems to only occur for about 30% of each rotation. I plan to jack it up and check tire wobble or if the sound occurs during free spin. Any other things to check?

Having an issue with the 09 Platinum 5.4. Recently the air ducts to the passenger side have been routed straight to hell. The blow hot regardless of the setting, the driver side is fine. I can hear a clicking noise that gets faster/louder with the fan speed on the passenger side. I am thinking blend door motor? Possible location of this part and some replacement instructions? Wife and kids aren't digging this hot heat all the time, its a very uncomfortable ride in such a great truck!

2 days ago in order to get home I had to attempt to drive through a rather large puddle. Never stalled or anything but the front was fairly submerged, not enough to stall but enough. Now I am getting a god awful noise from the front, and I think its the ac. I noticed the noise increases with rpm's. Can I just remove the belt so that I can still drive the car without the AC?

I have a 2012 Camry SE I4. The problem is my car speed odometer is faster than my radar detector speed. I have 2 detectors and they are both not show the same speed compare to the speed odometer. For example, I am going 70mph, the detector reads like 67-68mph. So the speed odometer is off about 2-3mph. I have OEM size on my car. I know the GPS on my detector is more accurate. So my speed odometer has problem?
