Passat (B5) :: Cabin Smells Like Gas - What Could It Be
Jul 3, 2011
Been this way for awhile. I can smell gas with my windows down. It's very potent. Almost everyone that rides in my car can smell it. What could this be?

View 6 RepliesI have been getting exhaust in my car cabin since last fall. It is worst when I first start up the engine. Once I get driving, it's not so bad. Switching off the heat or recirculating the air does nothing to change things. I used a CO detector in the cabin and the alarm didn't go off, but it still worries me that I might be breathing in carbon monoxide. And none of the shops have been able to diagnose it, let alone fix it. The first shop installed a new 'flex pipe'. The dealer thinks it's coming from a gasket near the flex pipe. The exhaust manifold is not cracked. A muffler shop said there was no leak. Is it possible that exhaust is somehow getting mixed into the air via a faulty valve or vent?
View 6 RepliesI have a question with aftermarket exhaust (particularly JoeZ and Borla) I was wondering after you installed the exhaust do you now get increased exhaust fume smells in the cabin when the windows or moonroof is open? When I had my 350(F-sport exhaust) I couldn't cruise with the moonroof open without filling the cabin up with fumes.
View 14 RepliesFirst Hyundai my 2014 Elantra SE. Love it to death. Used this forum to start doing my own car maintenance,
Changed the oil (using Hyundai OEM filter).
Cleaned the throttle body to stop the rough idle.
Chirpy fan getting replaced with new blower motor tonight so while I am in there:
And the reason for my post: Had a smell coming through the vents that just smells like rotten leaves. Changed the cabin air filter. Smell still there.
Where does the cabin air filter air intake go? I want to make sure there are no obstructions or smell inducing things living in this intake.
I guess my question is..Where does the air come in to the cabin from and where best can I make sure its unobstructed?
After like 20 minutes drive, my car smells like coolant. but it doesn't leak or something. The coolant is on max, and doesn't move at all. so whats that smell. Everybody said you are leaking coolant, but it isn't.
View 3 RepliesMy car smells like burnt fumes when I drive; especially in the cabin! At first it occasionally smelt this way, only when I stepped on it. Now its constant. The valve cover gasket has been changed, and it still smells! The next step is to delete the PCV. These fumes are making me sick; rolling down your windows does not work....
View 6 RepliesMy A/C smells absolutely horrible every time I turn it on, and I suspect it's the drain hole, but I've searched around underneath the passenger side of the car and found nothing..any specific location and maybe what it actually looks like?
View 3 RepliesI have had my car at the dealership once before for fixing some rattling noise in the cabin. That was a couple of months or so ago. The rattling is back again, this time from the front doors area and from the front speakers or dash area near the speakers.
View 5 RepliesI've never done it, not even sure where it is located.
View 11 RepliesAfter more than an hour of continuous AC operation, something seems to be blocking the air flow coming out of the vents. Could it be ice forming on the evaporator?
View 8 RepliesI just got my 2000 Passat back from the body shop. I rear-ended an SUV about a month ago and had my hood, front bumper, left headlight, A/C compressor, and radiator replaced.
HOWEVER, now when I let 'fresh air' into the cabin, I smell a strong exhaust smell. When I push the 'recycle air' button, the smell goes away. This leads me to think that somehow my exhaust pipe was cracked/damaged in the collision and is now spewing exhaust gas into the engine compartment - and thus when I allow fresh air (front the engine compartment) into the cabin...I am getting toxic exhaust blown in my face!
Where should I look for signs of an exhaust leak and is there an easy 'trick' to find the leak?
got a 2000 Passat b5, and all the cabin lighting has gone.
View 1 RepliesExcellent forums. New to this but just picked up a 1998 Passat that had a few problems. Problem I am now looking to solve is water in the cabin. Some of it was getting in through ros door that was jammed shut because the bottom was full of glass and debris blocking the drain holes but there also appears to be some getting in the front. The glove box is a little damp. My guess is that it has something to do with the pollen filter seal that I have read of. Can't find any advise re this or a recall (P9) that is referred to.
Need to then fix the exhaust that is blowing, clean it up and I'll have a solid, reliable car ready for the winter.
So, I just dropped a bit more money that I wanted to for an oil change at a drive-through place. The tech offered to replace my dirt cabin air filter. I figured that I could do it myself for much less (or even just tap the dirt out of my current one). How to access the filter, and how easy or difficult the process is?
View 17 RepliesI have already seen the post which shows a diagram from the B5. Exactly where the access is. In my car I open the glove box and there is another pull down compartment that holds the manual. Does this compartment need to be removed? If it does how do you do it. I dont see anything that looks like the diagram given.
View 3 RepliesMy fiance's car just got the dreaded oil smell in the cabin. Now I would like to start with swapping the PCV valve, but I can not find a source to buy it online. What other trouble scenarios could I be looking at? The car: 2001 V6 4mo Wagon, 110000 miles.
View 6 RepliesWhere I can find a source for 12V in front cabin where it will always be on ?
View 8 RepliesI have 06 passat 2.0L. When I turn on my cabin fan its making a noise like when a piece of paper is hitting a fan or something but a heavier sound. How do I get to the blower motor to see if something is stuck in there or something came loose?
View 2 RepliesThere is no noise that would indicate a hole in the muffler, just the exhaust smell. I'm wondering if the catalytic converter is going out? If it is the catalytic converter, will it strand me on the highway eventually?
View 2 RepliesMy mom has a 2000 Passat 1.8T Sedan. For the last six months the car has the distinct smell of engine fumes in the cabin. The smell becomes more prevalent whenever the fan is running (A/C or not). She has constantly been back and forth to the dealer but to no avail. The smell is there are idle or just driving around and requires a window to be opened for fear of passing out.
View 1 RepliesSeems below 20 my car cannot defrost the windows or heat the cabin. It has been 0-10 the last couple days here in SE WI. The coolant temp gauge is straight up right in the middle. Some how coolant isn't flowing through the heater core. Could this be a design failure? It doesn't seem to matter what settings are on dash. I have tried with ac on and off, recirculation on and off, full defrost on, fan on all speeds, have also tried a combination of cracked windows open.
Are other people experiencing this as well? Is a call to the dealer in order?
For ref car is 2014 tdi se with 34,000miles.
