Passat (B5) :: CV Boot Split Open With Grease / Oil Everywhere

Nov 5, 2006

While changing over to snow tires yesterday, I noticed the driver's side CV boot was split open with grease/oil everywhere.

Questions:

How urgent is this repair? Is the car drivable for a short while until I can get it fixed?
How much might I expect a CV boot replacement to cost?

Lexus GS 2006-11 :: 2008 - Leaking Grease From The Boot?

I bought my 2008 GS 350 in March of this year, got it checked by Lexus of Edison at 70,606 miles (I purchased it at 69,850 miles) and everything was fine. So I went in for my 75,000 mile service and now they're saying that my LF axle is leaking grease from the boot and to replace it with a brand new axle it will cost $1773. Here's a picture from directly underneath the drivers side

Prius (2001-03) :: CV Boot Inboard Joints Are Leaking Some Grease

The rubber on all my CV joint boots looks really good. Really amazingly good, I don't see anything that looks like a tear or split anywhere, or even anything looking like weak spots.

And yet ... Both of the inboard joints are leaking some grease that looks like it's coming right out under the lip of the boot at the fat end, beyond where it's clamped.

Is that common?Even though the noise I was checking into turned out to have a simpler explanation ....

Lexus GX 2004-09 :: Grease Splatter On The Frame / CV Boot Clamp Leaking

I noticed a little bit of grease splatter on the frame last night when I was changing the running board lights. The grease was coming out from the clamp, no ripped or torn boot.

Maybe one day I'll buy the special clamp and crimping tool but for now I used some silicone tape. It seals to itself and it doesn't leave a sticky residue if removed. If you use this tape make sure you stretch it and pull it really tight as you're wrapping it so it can seal to itself. I used some zip ties just in case.

Santa Fe (CM - 2007-12) :: Grease Coming From Inner CV Axle Boot On Passenger Side

So the other day I was changing the oil on the SF, and I noticed a glob of grease (fist sized) on the passenger side of the frame. After cleaning up the mess it appeared that the grease was coming from the inner CV boot on the passenger side. From my position under the SF I could not see any obvious crack in the boot, and I also squeezed the boot and ran my finger around it in each of the bellows. I still didn't find any rupture. I then began to wonder if the boot had slipped off of the base of the axle. I pushed and pulled on the boot and could not really budge it.

In full disclosure I did change the front struts 2 weeks prior. My only thought is maybe I pulled the boot off somehow during that job. If that was the case though wouldn't I be able to move/dislodge the boot now?

FWIW there is no noise coming from the passenger side that would indicate the CV joint is bad or on its way out.

Golf/GTI VII :: CV Boot Spitting Grease - Won't Turn Left - Broken Control Arm?

Had a "Friend" who multiple friends suggested could install my VWR springs put my springs on. Long story short, the installation was a nightmare. And I should have just been patient and taken it to the local tuner.

My problems now are: Guy snapped an inner axle bolt off. CV boot is spitting grease everywhere. Car does NOT want to turn left. It will turn a little then it just wants to go straight. Am I guessing the last issue may be a broken control arm? What do you think? I'm calling the local tuner tomorrow and getting my car in this week to be repaired.

Phaeton :: Boot Open While On Drive?

Twice this past fortnight I've come down in the morning to find my boot open while the car is on the drive, and as I normally store around 600 worth of golf kit in there this obviously isn't ideal !

Either someone else's transmissions are opening it or, more likely, I'm accidently pushing the button as I fumble around trying to get two small kids and associated baggage through the front door.

Is there any way of disabling the key fob boot release without disabling the switch function of the VW sign on the boot ? I'm considering opening up the remote and removing the switch unless can think of a better solution ?

Lexus GS 2006-11 :: Left Front Axle Boot Is Torn Wide Open

I have an 06 gs300 awd. My left front axle boot is torn wide open. I've called multiple parts stores, looked online. And I can't seem to find one anywhere but the dealer. I have found one for gs350. So my question is will that one work in my gs300? What is the part number from the dealer is different between 06 and 07?

Passat (B5) :: Substantial Amount Of Grease On Driver Side Rim

So I was cleaning my wheels the other day and noticed a substantial amount of grease on my drive side rim. Today as I climbed under the car to do an oil change, I took a better look at the other side of the wheel/brake assembly, they are all covered in grease. The rubber boot just behind my driver side disc has torn open and is throwing grease all over the place.

A) how hard is the repair to DIY
B) is it called the outter CV boot?
C) what should it cost me for parts?

When are the Germans going to provide something that doesn't require weekly maintence???!??? Just rattled!!!

Passat (B6) :: Car Skips For A Split Second When Decelerating?

I drive about 25 miles to work each day usually at highway speeds (~75mph). At the end of my trip as I'm coasting down the exit ramp and starting to apply my brakes, at around 30mph my car 'skips' for a split second.

It's hard to describe...it feels almost as if I've hit a patch of icy road and the ABS kicks in for a split second, but it's a little more severe than the feel of the ABS system activating. I don't know if it's a rough transmission downshift or what...but very annoying and hopefully not a sign of worse things to come.

The car has about 14k miles on it. It's a 3.6L Passat Wagon.

Golf V R32 :: Separate Boot From Knob To Install New Boot?

I'm repainting my peeling shifter trim plate and replacing the shift boot with a new one. Lots of support available on removing the shifter and disassembling the trim plate, but no clear instructions on how to remove the boot from the knob. It looks like this inside:

How do I separate the boot from the knob to install a new boot? The only instructions I found showed a metal collar which is not the case in our cars.

Passat (B5) :: Split Second Delay When Press The Gas - ABS Module Is Not Communicating

I have a 2002 Passat 1.8L T AWM Manual, 223K

I have noticed in the last little while, The car has a aplit second delay when I press the gas and it pulls.

I.e. If I'm on the highway, 5th gear 110km.h, I let go of the gas, soon as I press it again, a split second delay and it pulls with a slight jerk( Gas....... slight jerk. accel no problem).

Also, at times when the car is sitting overnight, my Airpump doesn't start when I start the car. In warmer weather, it always fires up after the car has been OFF for a period of time.

I got my Ross-Tech Vag and scanned it with no issues, except, my ABS module is not communicating.

Passat (B5) :: Can't Remove Cv Joint Boot

I have a 2004 1.8T 4Motion (automatic) that blew a CV joint boot. After inspection of the other side, I decided to replace both (just the outer boots). Got the axles out without much trouble but now I cannot drive the joints from the axles. I've tried both and neither is cooperating, I've knocked out off them with a mallet but they aren't budging. Is there something to do besides just driving them off?

How hard to replace it? I found a minor leak from left crimp clamp, the grease leaks all around it. It looks not too bad, but the grease will leak all out later. I thought there is repair kit on ECS, It seems I can replace brake pad, rotor and cv boots joint in the same day.

Passat (B5) :: 2004 - How To Remove Shift Boot From Knob

I'm trying to swap out the shift boot of my 2004 (B5.5) Passat 1.8T 4Motion and running into trouble. According to the instructions from the new Red Line shift boot, I should be able to separate the two collars that hold the boot to the knob. However, the white post that's part of the knob assembly has a piece that's bigger than the lower black collar, preventing it from being removed. Is there something I'm missing? How can I remove the boot without damaging the existing knob assembly?

Passat :: 2006 - Vibration In Front Right Part Of Car After Boot Replaced

I recently had my front right boot replaced due to a hole. After being replaced there was a vibration in the front right part of the car (same place as where the boot was replaced.) Now I brought the car back to the shop where the boot was replaced, and they told me this vibration was caused by a bad wheel bearing in that section. After the shop replaced this bad wheel bearing, the problem still existed. Now this vibration happens only when I accelerate to 3300-3500RPM, and occurs at times when I make turns. What this might be or how this is caused?
