Passat (B5) :: At Start Up Fluttering / Imitation Purring Kind Of Sound?

When I started the V^ Passat today it made a fluttering/imitation purring kind of sound...not re-assuring at all. What it could indicate? It only lasted a second then fadded out and ran fine.
maybe a belt tensioner or oil pressure regulator or something like that getting up to snuf?

I have a buddy who has an 01 B5 w/ 1.8t and 5 speed. He asked me to try and find out why it has been making a mysterious noise. I do all my own work, so I know a few things, but this noise has me stumped.
On startup, it will make an almost ratcheting kind of sound. Clattery, grumbly ratcheting sound... Goes away in a few seconds. It will also occasionally do this on acceleration.
Now, I am not hugely familiar with the 1.8t (in fact, my VW experience is largely a B4 TDI) so I'm not sure where to start.
One note though- I changed his oil for him, and the first startup right after the oil change the sound almost didn't happen at all. From then on resumed its obnoxious habit.
What this could be? Engine? Tranny? Something else? I didn't get a response over in the 1.8t area so I'm trying here.
Just recently his turbo has decided to contribute very little to power. You can hear it spool a little bit, but it's not what it used to be.
Just recently he had to have his intercooler replaced due to running over a semi tire. I have yet to pull his belly pan to look for loose fittings.

I've got a 99 1.8t, and every once in awhile when the turbo starts spooling I hear a fluttering, not sure how to describe it. sort of like when your valves run low on oil and you can hear em tick? Like something is fluttering in the turbo when its spooling, instead of just a steady sucking of air.

When I start the car in the morning & step on the gas there is a fluttering noise which happens each time I accelerate until it warms up. I bought the car with 17,000 miles on it and I didn't notice it happening then, but it was warm weather then.

So, lately I've noticed a slight fluttering sound in my '08 GS460 when accelerating on the freeway or up a slight incline. It'll kick in around 2,000-4,000 RPM, and it almost sounds like it's coming from right underneath the center console. I did have an exhaust system installed, then uninstalled, so maybe it's something the shop did, but can't be positive whether or not it was there before (always drive with my music on pretty loud).

Ok here is my question. I've noticed the power on my car has felt inconsistant for the last little while. I finally got around to logging the car and my boost peaks at mid 20's just over 3000 RPM and then drops fast to between 13-15 psi before I even get to 5000 RPM.
Under full boost I hear a low fluttering sound like the diverter valve opening and closing when this is happening. I also don't get the typical diverter valve sound when shifting when the car is doing this.
I took my diverter valve out and inspected it. I can pushing the piston up very easily with almost no resistance, is that normal? I would think that it should be hard to push the piston up if not wouldn't boost pressure be able to overcome the piston and leak past?
My mods are. HPA tune, HPA catted down pipe, and VWR intake.

My 2010 450h emits a fluttering sound on windy days. The noise sounds like a hvac flap could be vibrating when the wind hits. The noise is not loud by any means, however can get very annoying hearing it everything the wind gusts hit when you are at a stop. The other afternoon I was doing some basic winter prep under the hood and I could hear it under the hood as well.
I got my 2010 as a Lexus CPO early in 2013 and the noise has been there since day one, it's not something that developed recently. The last time I took it in I got a fail to replicate response from the dealership.

99 volkswagen passat 1.8T ... The turbo have like a fluttering noise when i let off, I just installed a APR chip. Is it a dieverter valve or something.

It is a 2002 or 2003 Chevy truck with a diesel engine. He was going down the road the other day under normal driving conditions when the motor made a racket and then white smoke started coming out of the back like a chimney. The truck will still crank and run (and smoke), and now there is a knocking or tapping noise that is coming from the engine. The engine is running kind of rough, and has the tapping or knocking sound, but it will calm down for 1/2 a second at which time the rough idle and noise stop, but quickly return. There is no engine code showing, so my code reader is useless. I once had a Chevy 350 with a spun main bearing that sounds similar, but the motor didn't idle rough or smoke. I don't know enough about diesel engines. I was told there was a possibility of a bad injector pump or bad injector itself. Is there any way of testing this yourself, or does it require a shop trip?

For about the last month or so my car has been making a strange thumping kind of sound that is constant with vehicle speed. slow or fast. changed the rotors, pads, hardware, shoes and machined drums. also has a slight pulsation when coming to a stop. Thought it was the tires but they look good. can not find anything wrong.

Well I put some HID light in my 2001.5 GLX Passat an I notice that they are aiming kind of low. I know which slots are what. Ones for highering and lowering and the others from side to side. But when I'm trying to adjust them the up and down they work but when I'm trying to adjust the side to side they seem like they aren't moving. Which is a better way to tell? I put it right next to a wall 25 feet away in the dark but I really couldn't tell still. Plus it's not a straight line either. Since I have the perjecter lights their should be a cut off line right? Also is it like turning it right to make the light go right or left to go right, for the side adjustments?

I bought a used 2008 Rx350 with 75,000 miles 2wd ... The car runs great, gets the advertised fuel mileage etc.. The engine seems (is)noisy to me at idle. Can't hear it while driving. sounds like poorly adjusted valves.

Just curious. I installed a set of Drive Gear springs on my auto passat and I have a "swoosh" kind of noise coming from I think it's the left front. (I think, might come from the others) It happens a lot on small bumps.

I just bought a 2006 Passat 2.0T FSI about 3 weeks ago, love the car so far. My only concern is within the last week i have started to have a little bit of a lack of power. The engine will give a surge of power and then kind of slow down for a minute then a surge of power and then slow down. Also the other day i started it up and it had a little bit of a rough idle until it warmed up, don't know if these are related. Has right around 91K miles right now.

So I had a weird problem this morning. I have a 2013 Elantra GT with about 27,000 miles on it. This morning when I went to start it, it tried to turn over once then stopped. Every other time I tried turning the key it didn't make any kind of noise and wouldn't start. Despite all the lights and radio and windows working fine, I still tried jump starting it, but to no surprise, that didn't work at all. Finally I tried using the shift lock to shift into drive then back into park again. When nothing worked, I tried making a complete guess and shifting it into neutral, when I was in neutral and tried turning the key, the car finally started. That happened about an hour ago and the car has been starting fine since.

Wife's car won't start today. Just get clicking sound when I put the key in, and a random message about airbag defective, or steering lock defective. We tried jump starting, but no luck. Do we have to pay to get it towed to the dealer, or will should they take care of that? I guess the starter went out?

98 Passat 1.8T FWD
Car will not start. No sound from fuel pump while cranking. Pulled up the carpets and pulled the cover and connector from the fuel pump. Ive heard the relay is the common problem. I tried checking the voltages on the harness and we get 0 while cranking. Pulled the relay and we get a resistance from T pin to pin 86. I did notice a yellow color on the white connector on the fuel pump itself around the middle two contacts.

I have a 2002 Passat GLS and when I tried to start my car this morning, it would not start. When I turn on the ignition, the car gives off a loud clicking sound. The interior and exterior light works, the panel light works, and the radio works as well. What might be the problem?

Yesterday evening I started up my 2008 variant 3.6 4motion after it had been sitting for about 24 hours. It started up right away but immediately started making a clanging racket that sounded just like an old Mercedes Diesel that needs a tuneup. It was such a loud and odd noise that at first I thought it was another car or truck pulled up next to me!
After about 5-10 seconds it settled down and idled normally--no warning lights, no leaks, no performance issues. I took it on a ~7 mile mixed freeway and surface streets drive with A/C off and on and it ran like a champ, then it sat again for a couple of hours before the return trip and started up & got us home with no problem.
It definitely wasn't the normal injector noise and it wasn't the emissions SAI (Secondary Air Injection) pump either. Since it's a 2008 (and since it's still running) I'm ruling out the oil pump bolt. The accessory v-belt and tensioner look fine and engine oil level/pressure are good, too.
We're experiencing our first real hot weather of the summer (low 90s) and it had been baking in the sun all day, so I'm wondering if the temperature caused pinging on startup before the ECU adapted?
Today, of course, it was normal. Have any other 3.6 drivers ever had this happen?

I'm a fairly new owner of a 2002 W8 Passat. A few days ago I was leaving the grocery store to come home. The car usually starts right up. This time is took 2 or 3 tries of cranking the starter til it fired on. On the drive home I noticed the A/C no longer worked and it didn't display the temperature on the A/C screen like usual. I got home just fine. The next morning I tried to start it. The starter and battery sound very strong. I was a little low on fuel so I dumped two gallons in - didn't work. I noticed a sound like a hard drive spinning or searching coming from the middle of the dash. I thought is was the cd player, but I ruled that out by taking out the stereo fuse. Is there a computer that went bad? I can't imagine there being an actual spinning hard drive in the car, but that's what it sounds like to me. I also noticed the clock and trip meter were reset as well. I didn't disconnect the battery to cause this. All fuses look good. I'm hoping it's not the fuel pump. Bad relay?

so on the way home from the golf course, I caught a little bit of fluttering in 3rd and 4th gear pulls. Time to upgrade the dv I guess. I was under the impression that we wouldn't have to do this though.
