Passat (B5) :: 2005 - Automatic Shift Lock Will Not Disengage
Oct 26, 2010
I went to go drive my 05 passat tdi this morning when I stepped on the brake an tried to put into gear, the automatic shift lock does not go off and i could not get it into gear, also the emission, ESP, and ABS light all came on. I called the dealer I bought it from and he gave me a little advice, he told me to pump the break several times and I should be able to get it into gear. It worked but, the ASL light by the shifter didn't go off and when i drove it around the block it felt like it was still not running right. It have high RPMs and little MPH, it was running fine the day before, when I drove it yesterday we were getting alot of rain (3" in 24hr) is this something that could have affected the motor in any way.....

I was listening to Car Talk a little this weekend and they had a call in from a woman who had an older car (Volvo, I think) where she could not get it out of Park, perhaps related to her dog spilling a lemonade down the console area.
'Click and Clack' confidently said that every car has an override for the servo loop that requires you to have your foot on the brake before shifting out of Park.
"Should be in your manual", says they; citing examples of sticking a screwdriver down a slot in front of the shifter, stuff like that. VW calls it "Automatic Shift Lock". I looked in the manual, and I don't see any override tricks.

2007 XLS with Nav. The driver side door lock won't automatically lock. It still unlocks fine but it will not lock via the remote or when I put the car in gear.

A few days ago when it was real cold my car would not shift into any gears. I shut it off and started it in neutral and was able to get it to shift, but after leaving it for a day or two it now will not go into gear. I have tried starting it in neutral and park, but it still will not let me push in the little thing to allow me to shift into reverse or drive. Why this might be happening or had this happen to them?? I'm thinking it might be related to the really cold weather. It's a 97 passat...Automatic....

I recently acquired a 1989 Ford Ranger midsize pickup with an electronic shift button/console between the visors. I put it in 4WD and the manual does not indicate the procedure to take it out of 4WD. What is the procedure?

Just noticed yesterday that the compressor clutch does not disengage while the air conditioner is on. It is 2005 V6 Sonata Elite. All the other cars I have ever owned had compressor clutches that cycle. Internet searches indicate that there might be air conditioners with only a low-pressure switch.

I am trying to change the automatic door lock setting to unlock the doors when I open the drivers side door not when I shift into park. The manual is vague and I am not having any success at all.

I just purchased a 2007 LS and at night when I have headlights on Auto, when I leave the car and lock it, the headlights do not go off. If I do not lock it, the headlights go off ok. What could cause this? Is there some kind of setting for this?

I have a Toyota Prius 2012 type 2 and I did install a vip 3200 Plus alarm system. My question is that why is the automatic lock not working? I park the car, get out, and close the door but do not lock the car. After 5 minutes, the automatic lock system is not engage or the alarm system does not arm.

This past monday morning I got in my 05 Legacy GT w/ 82,000 miles. When I turned the key it acted as if the starter engaged for a second then disengaged and made the typical motor winding sound. I tried it several more times with the same result. So I reluctantly called my local repair shop and had it hauled over for what I thought was possibly a bad starter. The mechanic went out to check it to see what it was doing and when he did, it started right up…..!! He said that when it started it ran as if it had been flooded for a minute or two then cleared up. Throughout the day he drove it around and started it about 20 times and said it “appears” to be ok. It’s a small shop that I trust with my other cars but they don’t have the tech to pull codes on a subaru. So my question is, what was the cause of this issue? Neutral Switch? Cam Sensor? or a Fluke?

I have Toyota Camry 2009 . My automatic lock doors stopped working at all. But it was long process, first all passengers doors sometimes opened, sometimes closed(I mean button on the doors didn’t open or close doors, remote control also didn’t open or close doors). Then they stopped function. 1 month later drivers door stopped working too. Now I can use only old fashion way. I made my research and I think I have to replace body ECU because it response for automatic door locks(but it cost a lot). What it could be?

I have a 36 foot motor home on a 2000 Ford F53 chassis. (similar to single axle freight trucks and school busses) After getting one set of the rear wheels partially stuck, which resulted in some spinning of that side, the overdrive off light on the shift lever began to blink and the service engine soon light came on. The fault code said, "speed sensor showing more than one mile per hour". Now the automatic transmission sometimes will not shift into first gear after stopping and has to be manually downshifted, after which, it works fine.

2200 Miles... It will not shift into 2nd gear in automatic and the rpms race up to 4000 when going about 20 mph. The only way to get it to work again is turning car off and on again. It has only happened twice.

Ever since I installed my L.e.d. lights in my doors the automatic door lock once moving keep locking like 3 times. I don't know why this would happen I didn't touch anything I shouldn't have. Why this would be happening.

I did read all of the topics in the FAQ and I tried the tricks to reset the automatic trunk, yet still no luck. I notice the latch is stuck in the down postion -- could that be part of my problem? I noticed some water under the spare therefore I'm eager to get this fixed asap.
I also made a road trip on the freeway yesterday in some very nice weather and the AC wasn't cold -- I had it all the way on "Low". I'll have the dealer check that out also. Apparently the previous owner in Vegas used up all of the cars cold air.

I have a 1993 corolla auto trans and when I first try to take it out of park it will not shift. I noticed that when I push the brake pedal to the floor it finally shifts. I recently replaced the brake switch, could the adjustment be a problem?
