Passat (B5) :: 2004 - How To Minimize Exhaust Noise
Jul 31, 2012
Is there any way to make the exhaust quieter? I'm going for somewhat of a stealthy look, and quiet exhaust. I have a 2004 v6 glx sedan manual transmission, all stock.

View 4 RepliesOn the way to an appointment an big noise started, like the exhaust was broken. See picture, how can I fix it, pull the part but do not see how the portion that got loose is hold in place buy that metal plate. Or do I need to tale it to the dealer.
Notice that there is no a lot of welding to hold it in place, that is amazing. It looks that it should be weld on the outside to avoid this problem.

My VR6 is making a crackling noise when I let off the gas...even in park or neutral, sport or drive or using the tip. When I give it gas it sounds normal, but when I let off the gas I hear a crackling sound for a few seconds as the rpms drop. It sounds like it's coming more from the center of the car vs. back near the mufflers. What this could be? My first thought is a cat issue?
View 11 RepliesI apparently broke the old girl again. Just hopping off the freeway, had been going freeway speed, go to accelerate after making the turn and my car suddenly sounded like I had ripped the exhaust off. Just a loud awful sound. Doesn't seem to have affected how she runs but... This is no bueno. In the morning I'll be hopping under the hood to see if it's something I can fix. Haven't checked to see if this is a warranty issue or not, but it'd be great if it is and somehow they extended it above 80k but I doubt it. I'd try and fix it myself depending on what happened, unfortunately I don't have much int he way of tools at the moment.

I'm having a strange exhaust leak type noise (loud exhaust type noise like hole in exhaust pipe) that goes away after about 20-30 seconds.. quite noisy in the garage. Can't see anything obvious. I tried the dealer but they always send a porter to bring the cars to the service bay and of course it stops by then! They couldn't duplicate the noise.
View 9 RepliesSo recently (since Thursday morning last week) I noticed the exhaust noise of my prius has been louder. Today I experimented a bit and I'm pretty sure it's exhaust related. The car is pretty loud if there is any load on the engine, although still mostly quiet if it's idling. There are no errors presenting and mileage is still great.
Otherwise, it's loud and resonates at a few different rpm points, and I found that when the engine spins under breaking (foot-off coasting over 42mph or in B mode) it also makes noticeable exhaust noise of the same type.
I'm guessing the exhaust is leaking (the sound seems to be coming almost from the left rear seat area? Behind me when I'm driving at least).
My '05 Lexus RX330 has developed a vibration and rattling noise, that I believe comes from the exhaust system. Looking for info on trouble shooting or quick repair?
View 10 RepliesOk, probably about 1/3 times i start my 96 f150 4.9 with true duals, the left pipe has a higher pitched howling noise, its a steady tone whether I rev the truck up or not it just gets louder. It will do it for about 6 seconds and then stop. The truck doesn't run badly because of it, but i took her to autozone to get her scanned and they said that the oxygen sensor on the first manifold bank has a slow response on startup. Is that what causes this strange noise, I don't even know how it would make it, it sounds much different from the engine. The right pipe doesn't do anything.
View 9 RepliesWell lately I haven't driven my truck much. Usually only on the weekends if Im lucky. Well I drove it today and I noticed this weird noise on acceleration. I have the cam phaser tick and have had that for about 50k miles or so. I started to think I was getting a manifold leak and that's what I thought this noise was until when I pulled over and put it in park and revved it up I did not hear the noise again.
It only does it when you hit the gas until you get to a steady rpm. I only drove 5 miles or so. So I couldn't do much testing cause its late and I got to get up in 4 hours. I don't even know how to explain the noise. It kinda sounded like an exhaust leak but it was more of like a lite thud noise I guess. Like I said it only does it when I hit the gas when its in drive but not in park. I tried to explain it the best I could. I just hope its not phaser problems cause I don't want to dump a bunch of money into it.
.What would happen if I had a muffler shop turn my stock exhaust into a true dual exhaust system with 2 magnaflow mufflers on my 6.9L N/A diesel?
View 5 RepliesI recently had my muffler and resonater taken off and put a magnaflow in place of the resonater. in place of the muffler is a Y pipe with 2 tips. the exhaust now sounds like a jet or like air is just blowing through the pipe really fast. also my check engine light came on as soon as the work was done and cranked the car. when i get hard on the gas the car hesitates on and off continuously. I don't know if the jet sound is from the Y pipe and tips or if it is something else.
View 6 RepliesContemplating getting exhaust on my 2.5L SE. Haven't decided on what type of muffler, but I would only get one (1 in with 2 out). Two questions:
First, I'd like to get the bottom black piece from the V6 Passat with two cutouts for the exhaust tips. This way I wouldn't have to cut or modify mine -- just swap them out. Can you just swap out the black plastic or is the bumper just all one piece?
Second, on the right side bumper -- under the frame -- there is large cover. On the opposite side it's where the tailpipe is and what looks like another muffler? What's under this cover?
My bad for not knowing the technical terms for these parts.
i have a 2004 vw passat b5.5 1.8t. i have researched what this ticking noise is but its either my lifters or my chain tensioner. it only clicks right when my car starts but as soon as it warms up the noise goes away. also the ticking goes up with my rpms and ticks faster. I know both of these could be the culprit but i am not sure.
View 2 RepliesSo about 30 minutes ago my exhaust broke between the turbo and cat. I guess I could weld it back but the pipe is a little rusty. Should I just get a turbo back and call it good and if so what brand and where do I get one for a 01 passat 1.8t
View 1 RepliesI have a 99 Passat wagon. After I got hit in the left rear quarter panel, I started detecting exhaust smell in the car when I opened the windows or sun roof. The exhaust pipe did not get damaged, but neither the body shop nor the regular shop could detect anything out of the ordinary. My theory is that the new bumper cover may be a little different than the one that was on there and does not let the gasses flow past the bumper the way it was before I got hit.
View 1 RepliesHow to go about getting a stronger sound outta my exhaust. I know some have removed the resonator - just not sure what that sounds like. I switched from a Touareg v8 (LOW GRRRR), and as much as I love my new toy, having some difficulty w/it's voice - particularly when I push out .
View 2 RepliesI just got my 2000 Passat back from the body shop. I rear-ended an SUV about a month ago and had my hood, front bumper, left headlight, A/C compressor, and radiator replaced.
HOWEVER, now when I let 'fresh air' into the cabin, I smell a strong exhaust smell. When I push the 'recycle air' button, the smell goes away. This leads me to think that somehow my exhaust pipe was cracked/damaged in the collision and is now spewing exhaust gas into the engine compartment - and thus when I allow fresh air (front the engine compartment) into the cabin...I am getting toxic exhaust blown in my face!
Where should I look for signs of an exhaust leak and is there an easy 'trick' to find the leak?
First noticed it several minutes after I shut the car off, then realized it was making the same noise while running.
I have never heard anything quite like this, including my A4 which runs much hotter than the Passat. Sounds like the exhaust is expanding and contracting...not sure why it would do that.
What it means when there is oil coming out of the exhaust of my 1.8t 20v passat 1998, and my engine has gone a bit tappy...
View 2 RepliesI have a 06 passat v6 with 34,5000 miles and with extended warranty, the car consumes about 14 mpg city and I noticed a humming noise coming from the back seat or bellow the trunk I am positive is the fuel pump, I will like to know if my poor mileage is related to the humming noise or should I take it to the dealer to have replace under warranty...
View 2 RepliesI bought a 01.5 Passat a few months ago and it had developed an exhaust leak. So when I went to check under the car I found it was missing the catalytic converter.
