Passat (B5) :: 2003 - Oil Leak Now Starting To Be Noticeable In Actual Drips
Apr 25, 2012
Having some challenges with my 2003 1.8T Passat (only 62,000 miles). Have been told about an oil leak long ago which is just now starting to be noticeable in actual drips. Keeping that under control (while I save up to pay for it; am not an "under the hood" type) for the moment (I check the oil level weekly and have only had to add a little since adding two quarts 6 weeks ago), but yesterday and this morning I now see a pink, watery fluid leaking from under the front passenger side.
About 6 weeks ago I had an issue where I had no coolant at all (got the warning light, my brother took me to VW, got the coolant, filled up). Checking that weekly too and had to add a little about two weeks ago, but so far its remaining level. Plus its on the driver's side, so would it have hoses running to the passenger side that could leak?
Checked other threads but find nothing else described as pink. Panicked this is steering, transmission (brakes even?), clutch (if there is) fluid? Am in a financial bind right now so can't just take it to some one for a look-see, and, as I say, am not a car geek. I can add oil and washer fluid, that's about it. Should I be panicked or simply continue to monitor coolant level?

Water drips in on the passenger side from the headliner just above where the handle is bolted to the frame (next to the windshield) after a good rain.

1999 7.3 misses when starting it cold (first start of the day even when outside temps were around 20 deg C ). It has a noticeable miss and lots of white smoke. After warming up it runs perfect. I changed the GPR and tested all glow plugs, 3 bad and one weak one all replaced. Now that it is cold out it still misses when first started, even if left plugged in.
It will start and run for approx 3 seconds perfectly smooth then it starts to miss and idle speed slows down. on one occasion I went to start it after sitting 10 plus hours plugged in and it started then missed and slowly died. Would not re start, It was firing and smoking but not enough to get going again. Went back the next day and it started and ran fine for a few weeks. Did the same thing to me yesterday, started and then petered out and died and this time it will not re start after 2 days of trying on a couple occasions. I changed out the CPS with no luck.

My 2001 4.6L F-150 has been sitting on the driveway, used once every 2 weeks or so for the last 3 yrs. I came to start it a few days ago and it kept turning over but not starting. The key security chip is working, battery is charged, all plugs are firing, fuel pump fuse and relay check good. When I turn the key to ON, sometimes I hear the fuel pump priming, other times it doesn't. The times it does prime, the truck fires right up.
The times it doesn't prime, engine won't start. When the pump does prime, and while the engine is running, the pump makes a noticeable buzzing sound, much louder than normal. When the pump primes. fuel pressure measures at 42psi in the ON position, 36psi with engine running, and 46psi with engine running and vacuum hose removed. I believe all these are within specs.
My question is this: Is it safe to assume that the pump is going bad and will eventually fail completely? My second question is (and I know this can be debated til the end of time) should I get the Motorcraft or aftermarket? I have Airtex, Spectra, Carter, and Delphi available locally.

I just noticed 2 small puddles under the car tonight. They are in the center left to right, and about even with the steering wheel (front to back). They appear to be water, but I was just wondering if this is the normal a/c discharge, or something else?

Our '99 Explorer leaks when it rains. The water drips from under the dash on the driver's side floor. A while back a dealership put all sorts of sealant around the windshield gasket and that seemed to work for a while.
Where are the drains for the door channels, windshield and the air intake where the windshield wipers are connected? I'd like to make sure they are clear.

For the past couple of weeks I have been having some issues with my trunk. The MFD would say that the trunk is open when indeed it is not. With that happening the car will lock the doors but not arm with an audible beep and the door lock lights will flicker at the same time so would the trunk display on the MFD.
I found a fix by locking the trunk down with the valet key on the driver door by the trunk/gas buttons, that stopped the trunk display from lighting up and the car was no able to arm the alarm properly.
Now within 3 days the issue has come back up even with the trunk locked with the valet key. In order to get the car to arm properly I have to unlock the Trunk Switch , open the trunk, re close trunk and then re lock the trunk switch with the valet key.

I am having a heck of a time finding this coolant leak. It drips off the power steering pump. I replaced the upper radiator hose and the heater "y" hose that goes to the bottom of the Degas bottle. I recently replaced the lower radiator hose as well. So the truck runs normal. When the system is under pressure I do not see any leaks. But after the engine is completely cold it starts leaking a small puddle of coolant. Its appears to be coming from the power steering pump. But I am sure its something above or near it. This is on my 2005 Excursion with a 6.0. Can the water pump be going bad and leaking this direction. I would expect a water pump to leak straight down the middle of the engine. What to look for? The thermostat seal stays dry. but it has to be in that area. What is really messing with me is. When it is hot and pressured up It does not seem to leak. Only after it has been sitting for hours and cools off..........What the heck!

2008 SE V6 Convertible : I have noticed that the road noise has gotten significantly worse. I don't think it's the tires as they have been well inflated and still have about 80% tread left. The noise gets very noticeable starting at 30 mph and gets louder with speed, (by the time I reach 70MPH / 2.5K RPM its already VERY LOUD) and you can even feel the "grinding" vibration in the accelerator pedal and steering wheel. It seems to from the front. A kind of cycling hum (not constant; but broken like the tip of a helicopter blades). The noise does not change in turns; and it's not a loud clunking noise.

this is regarding a 2001 taurus sedan 3.0 liter 116,000 miles. She developed an intermittent starting problem. No particular time or situation to when it would do it.Had it diagnosed as a crankshaft sensor which was replaced. fixed the start issue but then had a noticable missfire or jerkiness to the car while accellerating. I was told it could be fuel filter so replaced that. After getting it back it still had a very noticeable jerking to the drive. Was next told it might need injector cleaning. The exhaust sensor light would come on at times. So it was suggested to change an injector in cylinder 1 as that was the problem cylinder. Not sure if that has fixed the problem as I have not yet got the car back as there was a problem reinstalling the tank that required parts from Ford to fix.If I get it back and it still misses what else could it be? I was told maybe a valve for that cylinder, does that say the end is near for this vehicle?

Grinding feeling, and noise from rear of 02 explorer xlt. only noticed when starting out from a full stop and turning. It feels like something is grabbing like the rear brakes. I purchased this suv of a local dealer lot, because it was so clean and on a short test run seamed fine.
The day after I picked it up I took it for a shakedown cruise to see if I noticed any problems. After going up a few forward grades I noticed a disturbing rattling noise coming from mid under carriage, and got very worried. I immediately took it to a local well revered mechanic. They eventually had it for 4 days in order to diagnose it. After the dealer had done the inspection on the car and passed it, that all rotors and pads needed to be replaced, left front wheel was locked up, inspection sticker month was never punched, both front tires were bad and either the flex plate or tork converter or both needed to be replaced. I took it back to the dealer with the report and he agreed to fix it with me paying for parts. He did and the rattle was gone !
Yet now I have noticed the problem mentioned at the beginning of this piece, plus the rear wiper does not work. I think I got taken for a ride, which may become a longer ride than I thought. All I want is a reliable car. what could that rear noise be ???

1999 Camaro V6 125K miles. Occasionally overheats. No noticeable coolant leak. Was pressure tested and passed. Mechanic suggested new radiator cap. New cap installed and was fine for a while then overheated again and problem seems to have intensified. Will a compression test reveal anything regarding this problem?

So the water pump on my early 99 (158k miles) is starting to leak just sitting in the driveway, did a little research last night and read a few write ups. Just wondering if any tips or tricks I could use to make this go easier. Also any list of parts I should replace and/or might need. I read on one write up about replacing it with an Airtex water pump and was wondering about what people thought of those, I would rather fix it right then just go with the cheapest parts. Possibly there are better brand water pumps out there?

MY 2002 Passat 4motion is experiencing a strong gas odor, noticeable both inside the cabin and outside of the vehicle. Odor is noticeably stronger with a tank that has just been filled to full. I see that VW had a recall for 4motion Passats manufactured between 4/1997 and 8/2002. Recall notes, a fuel tank ventilation valve (4motion only) that can leak due to fracture.
I was in for the heat shield repair about 8 months ago which is covered under the same recall (campaign number 08V156000 - VWOA recall R5, but don't know if the VW tech did anything to check on the fuel ventilation valve.

I just had an oil change over the weekend at a dealership in D.C., and now with the car on D, stopped at a light, there is a noticeable rattling coming from the engine bay.
Also, I have some error codes on my computer, but when I mentioned it to the dealer, they said they could only look at it if I paid the diagnostic fee.

So I pulled the trigger and got my B5 a little brother... found an awesome 07 4mo wagon sport package with all the bells and whistles with low miles and at a great price. I just couldn't resist. So far I'm loving the car and the extra ~50% hp over the old 30V
I did notice some very noticeable clicking noise in the dash area. It seems to be related to the Climatronic moving flaps around to change air distribution. At random times it starts clicking (kind of a relay sound) a few times in a row and then stops or sometimes it continues clicking in different patterns. When I press the off button on the Climatronic controls it stops immediately.
I'm kinda thinking that it's probably the normal way Climatronic works in this model but it I'm not 100% sure (and the 2001 was silent in that regard) so I want to make sure that it's not something abnormal (like a flap sticking and the sounds I hear is the system trying to flip it a few times before giving up).
Is the clicking normal or should I have the dealer take a look at it? I'll probably take it in soon anyway to get an alignment (car doesn't pull to the side & tires look evenly worn but the steering wheel is about 5 degrees (rough guess) to the right when going straight.
Anything else I need to look out for with this car? It has about 35k miles and all services so far have been done (incl. oil changes every 5k). No open recalls besides a "silent" service action related to the battery cable or something like that (according to the dealer where the car had been services - I called them up before I bought it). There was no major repair work done to the car like the dreaded oil pump bolt issue. Would that even be a concern for an 07 (car was built in Feb 07)?

I have an 01 passat and when I was coming home one night my car has gone over a pot hole or hit something. I checked the car immediately but couldn't see anything wrong. But as I been driving it there is a resonant vibration in the car that becomes noticeable at 80km/h and above. At low speeds it feels normal. But once I get up to speed I get this vibration and its not a side to side vibration just a constant shaking. Sort if like if I were going over a a road that had very very small bumps. My friend had a look at it and thinks that one of the tires are done. But he's not really sure. What may be causing it?

Just got new tires Friday. Now I have a very noticeable shaking right at 35-40mph. Doesn't do this at any other speeds and test d up to 80mph. Took back to where I got the tires and told them and they rebalanced them and yet it still does it. Could it be a bad tire? What am I missing?

Have a 1997 2wd F-150 XLT auto trans with 305,000 miles that has developed at vibration that is most noticeable at 55-60mph. It seems to start at about 35, but at 55 you can feel it in your seat. When it's vibrating shifting into neutral doesn't change anything.
Drive shaft u-joints: two rear replaced not too long ago (5+ years?), front joint by transmission seems to move freely, but isn't excessively sloppy, carrier bearing okay. Have done the following with no improvement:
Re-balanced all tires, no problems noticed during the balance;
Replaced first right and then left rotor and wheel bearings, no change.
Several mechanics have driven it and made different pronouncements, it's not: transmission, rear-end, tires, u-joints or carrier bearing. One mechanic ran it while up on his lift and didn't see a driveshaft balance problem. Last suggestion was that the left wheel bearing were "on their way out", so they were the most recent change. It's drivable, but not fun and it produces a lot of noise in the cab.

On my 2003 6.0l Excursion, the 5R110 is having some issues with reverse lately. Sometimes when you put it in reverse it doesn't actually engage. The only way to make it "fall" into gear is by giving it a little fuel, which then sends it into reverse. Now here me out, I'm not hitting 3,000rpms when I do this, just a light raise in rpms will get it in gear. Solenoid issue, possibly?
I haven't noticed if it does this when it won't go into reverse or if it does it no matter what, but it will make a light clunk when going forward after using reverse. A very light, but noticeable clunk. Is this most likely a U-Joint related issue? Got under it and moved the driveshaft around, didn't notice any play at all, but perhaps I wasn't checking properly (wiggling it left and right).
Excursion is RWD (2WD) and has right around 183k miles on it, acquired in October with 172k miles, so not positive on previous history of the transmission. Also I know my gear selector mount is broke, so it cluster is off, but I certainly don't think that, in of itself, is the cause of my issues. Maybe I'm wrong?

My friend and I are working on her '03 1.8t and I noticed a huge oil leak under the intake manifold. It looks like there's a tube that has broken off and is now just spewing oil all over the place. I tried to get pics the best I could, so here they are....
I'd imagine its something that needs to be fixed asap.
