Passat (B5) :: 2003 - Broken Dipstick Oil Case?
Jul 27, 2010
I have a broken dipstick sleeve for my 2003 Passat 1.8-liter.
I bought a new sleeve from the dealership, but not sure how to uninstall the old one and put in the new one.The oil sleeve is in a tight spot. I can't understand how to remove it without taking apart other engine parts.

I was checking the oil this morning before getting ready to drive (for an hour) to the in-laws for Christmas, and the Effing orange plastic dipstick tube broke about halfway down. Now I'm afraid to drive for an hour at highway speeds, for fear that a lot of oil might come out of that compromised Effing orange plastic dipstick tube part -- would you all agree that I should not drive the car? Figures this would happen on Christmas Eve when nothing is open.

I bought a 1999 Passat 1.8T a few days ago. I noticed before I bought it that the dipstick funnel was broke but I knew it was only a $2 part. Today I bought the part at a local dealer and went home to install it. Problem is the old one is actually broke in half. One half remains on the dipstick the other half on the tube. I can't for the life of me get that thing off the tube. I have a inspection scheduled at the dealer tomorrow so if I can't get it off I will probably just have them do it.

I went to check the oil today. For the second time the end of the dip stick is broken off.

When having an oil change at Valvoline, the mechanic informed me that the tip of the transmission dip stick was broken off. If this tip is floating around could this piece of metal damage my transmission?

I have recently inherited a 2000 Jetta. The car runs great however the plastic tube that holds the oil dipstick is broken in two or thee spots. It has been previously repaired with electrical/duct tape. Doesn't seem to leak but I'm wondering if I need to get a new one in there. Is this something I can do at home or does it need to go to a shop?

It's really not relevant what brought up this question but do you think a broken dipstick tube can cause an engine to run lean and why do you answer that way?

I just finished putting a 7.3 back in one of our f450 plow trucks today, so then i moved onto our 2001 F250 5.4 plow truck. The dipstick tube was rusted in half so i pulled on the remaining half to get it out and put in the new dipstick. However, it broke off at the block. So now i cannot see how to get the rest out with out doing a lot more work. I haven't removed the splash guard yet but will i have to remove the manifold , the oil filter base, or both?

I'm in the process of changing my shift motor on my 04 f350. I can't get it off because of a broken bolt. The previous owner must have done this before, and snapped the head and some of the shaft off, so it's basically an alignment pin that's recessed into the hole on the motor. For some reason it's holding the motor on, even though I don't think the hole is threaded. Any way to get it off. I'm thinking that taking a MAP gas torch to the casting on the motor may be my best bet.

The hood release strap broke on my 2003 VW Passat. It fully came out from under the hood while the hood was closed. I had the car at a shop the day before, picked-up the car at night and found the part dangling above the grill the next morning (the work included work under the hood so they were the last ones to open the hood). Of course the shop knows nothing about it and said they've never heard of this happening before. The part broke at the end under the hood that connects to the release point and cannot be repaired (two eyelets broke on this plastic part). I found the part can be bought on-line for about $11 plus shipping. Obviously the first step is I have to somehow get a tool under the hood to release the hood where the strap made the release in the past. The question is how do I do that?

I recently broke the oil pan, my husband replaced it after about a month of waiting for new one to come. (Im afraid I didnt turn the car off in time and did something to the engine.) All was good after fixing it until after about a week of driving it i noticed some white smoke coming from tailpipe as i was accelerating to get on the highway. Drove it home and no smoke, drove it some more and NO smoke as getting on the highway! But then again a few days later it did it again!!! The car runs good no loss of fluids, no milky oil(not the head gasket) I would never know anything was wrong if I didnt have to get on the highway to go to town and see the smoke. I have been racking my brain on this computer trying to figure out what could be wrong? Someone followed me and said they smelled raw fuel from the exhaust smoke. But i dont know if its its an injector, I think its from breaking the oil pan??? But i dont know ???? Its a 2003 vw passat 1.8t 67,500 miles just bought the car so dont know much about the history. Seemed to be taken well care of so I dont know.

The only problem I am having with this car is that the sunglass case in the overhead console behind the sunroof controls will not stay shut. It keeps falling open. I suspect it will have to be replaced. I hate to go to the dealer if I don't have to.

I went to check my oil this morning even thought its only been roughly 2000 miles since the last change/filter(Napa Gold and Mobil One 0w40). I noticed that the dipstick had just a tad of yellowish snot stuff on it. I know it mean water in the oil but I cleaned it off and recheck, put a hair more in and it was all clean no more snotty yellow gunk.
My question is because it is cold and my dad moves it almost every morning before work could it be condensation? I know with my 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe with roughly 153,000 miles used to get the same yellow snot stuff in the oil fill neck but never on the dipstick. The passats oil filler cap/neck were both free of any snotty stuff.
If its still like this tomorrow I'm taking it to the dealer. Also there's still coolant and I couldn't be sure if there was any less as if it was a leaky head gasket but the rest of the oil is clean and not milkshake like.

Just finished changing my oil and noticed that the dipstick was cracked. Upon further inspection I noticed the end which mates with the plastic tube was cracked and there were missing chips. I can only imagine where they ended up, in the oil. My question is, what to do? Since this is a plastic component, I assume that it will not harm the interior engine parts, but not 100% sure.

I have the above passat with the AWM motor. There is signs of moisture in the dipstick tube, but not on the oil fill cap. Now today the plastic dipstick funnel snapped due to being frozen to the dipstick.
Now the dipstick had what looks like lithium grease on it. The car has been slowely loosing coolant. But exhaust is clear, no signs of steam or coolant burning through exhaust.
But if the lithium grease like substance on the dipstick was a oil/coolant mix WHY did it freeze . I use a 50/50 mix of pentofrost SF. According to their lable should be good down to below zero. It has not gotten that cold here yet, even at night.
Why or how I could be getting moisture into the motor? And why is it only visible on/in the dipstick funnel and nowhere else.

Car is burning through a higher than usual amount of oil? I just went to the dealer to do an oil change because the oil was so low I could barely get a reading on the dipstick, no leaks were found, and the car does not smoke.

I bought a new to me 03 explorer 4.6 tow package XLT 136000mi. Rebuilt aamco trans with 10k on it. Been checking it over before i put it on the road.. No 4x4 but the button lites work and i got into low range once. (Had a hell of a time getting back to high but eventually it did). Question is if there is 12v at the brown wire on the TC the case should be fully locked? I figure when i check it if there is not 12v at the brown wire in 4x4 high i could apply 12v directly with a jumper wire to see if the case locks to 4x4. Am I correct?

What sensor I can use ? I did find one on rock auto that said it was for the transfer case but after looking into there part I found it was for a automatic ...
