I have recently bought a B5.5 2003 Passat 1.9TDI SE. It is a really nice car but recently it has developed a fault. When I turn the steering wheel it squeaks. It sounds like the steering wheel is rubbing against something. What could be causing this ? Does it need some lubricant applying ?
View 1 RepliesI have a 2000 Ford F150 XLT 4X2 that has a "clunking/squeaking" noise in the steering wheel, intermittent happens driving straight down the road, hitting bumps, breaking. It is very annoying! changed out lower ball joints tightened wheel bearings, greased idler/pitman arm thinking that was the problem and it became worse. Had someone look at it and stated that the steering shaft was welded?!?! Why would the steering shaft be welded what am I looking at in replacing it (cost for parts and labor time) and are there any other additional parts that will have to be replaced as well?

View 2 RepliesI have a 2006 LX with 25k miles.. within the past 1,500 miles or so, I notice there is a squeaking/creaking/rubbing sound coming from the steering wheel column when I turn (and cut, specifically) the wheel at stopped and low speeds (such as pulling out of the driveway or maneuvering into a parking spot). At faster speeds this doesn't happen.
I intend on bringing this to the dealer. What should I expect, and should I bring this in ASAP?
My sister has a Camry that has a squeak in the steering wheel occasionally when you turn the wheel. She lives in another state, and so I'm only going by her description, but I'll be visiting soon.
She describes it as an intermittent squeak/groan when the wheel is turned. I think it may be plastic on plastic, but it is definitely coming from the area around the column (up by the combo switch and ignition switch area), not down by your feet, she says.
I'm not sure of the year, but it is in the 2001-2003 range, I believe. I think this is just an annoyance thing, not a mechanical problem.
This is a known issue with Lexus. Bring your Lovely RX to the dealer so they can replace the Steering wheel column, so it will stop the "Squeak" noise.
View 2 Replies2002 Solara, 69K miles, occasional squeak from steering wheel when turning, sounds as if it is coming from where the wheel connects/rotates at the column - sounds like a weak rubber horn (like clowns use) or a rubbery, balloons-rubbing-together sort of sound. Not loud - only noticed when I was w/out the radio on (had an exhaust repair last week and was enjoying the quiet). It's not an external steering pump whine - it really seems as if it is coming right the steering column. Short of leaving cheese to there to coax out a mouse . . .
View 6 RepliesI had the clock spring recall done last week and now when I turn my wheel almost to full lock for a tight turn, it has a little "chirp" when going past a certain point. I'll definitely bring it back to them to correct it, but I'm guessing no quick fix but I can easily remove my airbag and check from there.
View 4 RepliesHad the car at the dealer over the weekend for oil change. Told them I was hearing a squeak when turning the wheel, not just when it is cold. Anyway they told me that my rack is leaking and they ordered a rack and P/S Pump for some reason? Does that seem normal at 38,000 miles. Also I asked if when they replace the rack do the align it, answer was no, even though parts are under warranty. I drive mostly highway but maybe 2 miles in the city where the roads have been pretty bad while construction is going on, Not sure if that hurt the rack or something else. The dealer hit me I think at 15,000 mi to change the P/S Oil for some reason, so it is all covered but I just think it is odd to go that suddenly. What next? I don't abuse the car at all.
2009 Sonata SE V6
My steering wheel, when pulling away or towards me (reach) is juddery/squeaky. I think its the 'rubber bead/dust seal' under the instrument binnacle rubbing on the plastic steering column shroud as it moves in and out. It works and doesn't sound slow and the motor does not sound under strain, its just noisy as the shroud does not run smoothly against the 'rubber bead'.
Up and down (rake) is quiet.
To lubricate the plastic is silicone lubrication spray the way to go? Or is there another lubricant and/or quick & easy way to get it to not squeak.
Its not a big deal, but it would be nice to have it working properly when I get in and out.

so I was heading off the freeway to take my exit at night. Didn't see there was a little curb island between the main freeway and exit. Went with the car over the curb and my right passenger tire went out.
I changed the tire and driven off, then noticed the car sound got much louder all of a sudden and when I turn the steering wheel right or left, I hear or feel a heavy sharp sensation- yet the car turns fine, it just sounds louder when I press the gas and when I turn the steering wheel I can feel my feet vibrating a bit and a soft/sharp squeak sound comes out.
What could this be?
I recently had a 4-wheel alignment performed on my 2003 VW Passat. A couple days after the procedure I noticed my steering wheel was stiff and a whirring noise when I turned the wheel. Come to find out my power steering fluid is now leaking. Is this just a coincidence, or could the garage have broken something. It was not leaking or making any noises prior to the alignment.

When I turn the steering wheel, there is a groaning sound both to the left and right. the other problem is when I'm accelerating slowly up an incline and turning the steering wheel, there a type of clicking sound I hear and feel on my accelerator. By the way, it's a V6 engine, Front wheel drive.
View 2 RepliesI have an '03 Subaru Forester and my mechanic recently replace the rear wheel bearings and seals. Afterward, I noticed a high pitch squeak from the rear right wheel at slow speeds. I brought it back for my next oil change and had them look at it. I watched them take off the wheel and brake drum. He hand-turned the wheel mount and it made the squeak sound from the bearing. Then he said that it's no big deal and put it all back together.
So, is it really not an issue? I'd rather not have noises coming from something brand new, but I also like my mechanic and don't want to make him do a lot of extra work if this thing is just going to go away on it's own.
Already did the wheel to left, right and center about five times. Still no power steering.
View 8 RepliesThe problem makes the car unsafe to drive. The quickest way to describe it is a hard pull to the left after a very linear steering feel. My perception is almost as something is holding on and then just fails and lets go and the car quite abruptly shoots left in a very unsafe manner. Here are the things I have done to remedy the situation, I replaced the struts with factory replacements 15,000 miles ago. At the same time i replaced the left and right axles, drove the car with the problem then last weekend, I replaced the upper tie rod arms, and lower tie rod ends, the sway bar bushings, and the control arms on both sides. I literally feel as though it is a darn near new front end.
Just yesterday I had 4 new Goodyear eagle tires and an alignment done and the problem became more pronounced and worst. I really like this car and want it to be a joy to drive as I know from others these little hatchbacks are a real joy on winding mountain roads.
I have seen it written and noticed it in person that the steering wheel on the b7 does not line up exactly with the driver or the seat. the steering wheel is ~ 1 inch offset to the right of center.

So yesterday I was driving my VR6 around town today, after stopping at a coffee shop and leaving my wife and the engine running while I went inside, I returned to a amber-colored steering wheel light in my tach. There's no stored codes and nothing on the MFD. Book says that flashing icon is steering wheel lock mechanism failure and solid icon is electronic steering assist failure, but book shows red-icon, not amber.
Steering was fine during this time, or at least I didn't notice any difference for the 20 feet I drove before I stopped and shut it off. Upon restarting it, the light was still there. I decided to drive it a little ways and see if anything changed... Within less than a 1/4-mile, the light went off and has stayed off.
How to do any more testing against the steering module to see if anything is actually wrong or going wrong?
I have lots of rattles. I went to the dealer with little to no success. The one that is bothering me the most is coming from inside of the steering wheel.
